12 Best Italian Restaurants in Nantes

Nantes may sit closer to the Atlantic than the Mediterranean, but its dining scene has fully embraced the soul of Italy. From the historic Passage Pommeraye to the lively Bouffay district, the city is dotted with trattorias that range from rustic and familial to sleek and contemporary. Whether you are a local looking for a new favorite or a visitor craving a comforting plate of pasta after exploring the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, you won’t have to search long for authenticity.

The best Italian restaurants in Nantes share a commitment to quality ingredients, many importing DOP cheeses, cured meats, and flour directly from Italy. You will find wood-fired ovens blistering Neapolitan crusts, fresh pasta rolled by hand each morning, and wine lists that champion small producers from Piedmont to Sicily. These are places where the service is warm, the espresso is strong, and the focus remains squarely on honest cooking.

While pizza often takes center stage, the city’s Italian offerings go far deeper. Expect seasonal risottos, slow-braised ragù, and seafood-driven antipasti that nod to Nantes’ own riverside location. Vegetarians and gluten-sensitive diners will also find thoughtful options, as many chefs here have adapted traditional recipes without losing their essential character.

Choosing where to eat can be overwhelming, especially in a city with such a dense concentration of good tables. That is why this guide focuses on consistency, atmosphere, and the kind of dishes that keep regulars coming back. Each recommendation has been selected for its ability to deliver a genuinely memorable meal, not just a quick bite.

From cozy date-night spots hidden on cobblestone lanes to lively pizzerias perfect for families, there is a place for every occasion and budget. The following list reflects the diversity of Nantes’ Italian food scene, balancing well-known institutions with smaller gems that deserve your attention.

Below, you will find the twelve best Italian restaurants in Nantes right now, each offering something distinct and worth the reservation.

Good place to have a meal in Nantes. Italian restaurant with a variety of options on the menu. The seats are comfortable. The portions are average sized. Everything we ordered was good. The staff was friendly enough, though the service was a bit slow (maybe because it was Easter Sunday). The disco themed toilet was a funny surprise.
Hazel Grogan★★★★★
We had a super dinner last night . The waitress was very friendly and tried her best English. The bubbles with fresh strawberry was delicious. I had 4 cheese pizza and everyone was happy with their meal. They have a very cool toilet where we could have danced the night away . Thank you nina x 😘

Firstly, the service was excellent, the servers and greeter were prompt and very professional. For an appetizer, I ordered the avocado toast and it was very tasty and aesthetically-prepared on the plate. For the main plate, I ordered the steak and potatoes, the steak was a little on the tough side but tasty, juicy and robust in size. For dessert, I had the Chocolate chip Stracciatella and it was absolutely delicious. And lastly, the prices were very reasonable.

Nice place centrally located in Nantes. The Pasta Carbonara wasn't a hit, but the others were great, including the pizza. Nice service.
Lukas Masek★★★★☆
The food was good. Not super good but OK, except of carbonara, where the pasta was almost swimming in eggs. Anyway the rest was good, quite quick, staff was veryfriendly

It's not bad, it's not exceptional. It's okay. I had lunch somewhere else (entree, plat, dessert) it was cheaper and very good. Here I had a pizza, a tiramisu, and a cocktail I wasn't disappointed, but I don't look forward to coming back either.

It's definitely one of the best Italian restaurant in the city (or at least one the best I have been to). Their risotto with shrimps is the dish one on menu you should definitely try. PS: You want a table, make a reservation beforehand.

Such a nice and cute place to have lunch . It wasn’t busy at all, our server was actually the owner who was very welcoming and very polite. The food was very much on point with how the restaurant looks, which was perfect. Will definitely be going back there.

Charming bistrot in the heart of Nantes serving high quality Italian (actually Neapolitan) food for a fair price and with great service. As an Italian from Napoli, I must say this is one of the best Italian restaurants in town and the only serving truly traditional neapolitan dishes. Thanks Michele for welcoming us in your beautiful bistrot! I will surely be back!

Excellent restaurant to visit in Nantes. We didn't have a reservation but were seated right away. The waiter was very polite and found us a table away from a group where everybody was smoking. The place has a vibrant, yet somewhat classic decoration. The service was super fast, even though the restaurant was full. The food was delicious with a very good amount served. We will probably go back.

We were so entertained during dinner that we completely forgot to capture the delicious pasta and mouth-watering burrata. We were the first to arrive and fully enjoyed the whole experience — from the staff’s attentiveness to the ambiance and quality of the food. Definitely a night to remember.

The cocktail “Florentina” was delicious and sweet, along with a rich carbonara. The terrace ambiance was lovely, and it was filled with people. Clearly this is a well-loved restaurant and I understand why! Staff was courteous and attentive.

Loved the Truffle Pasta. Most delicious thing I've eaten since moving to France. The waitress could tell I don't speak French, luckily my friend did. Didn't get a picture before eating because we were too excited by both the rissottos. Highly recommend the gorgonzola one also. The Tiramisu was decent too. The coffee and service was enjoyable. My only complaint was the portion of pasta; could definitely have been more filling as is the case in other restaurants, including classical Italian ones.
Alex Nozal★☆☆☆☆
I don't understand the fuss for the pizze. One regina for my niece and one pistachio for me. Pistachio was odd tasting, very light in actual pistachios, la mortadella was far from exceptional and all together I did not like my pizza's garnish at all. The doe was good but not excellent. My niece's tasted better, but the tomatoe base was soaky. On the plus side, the drinks were really good, as was the service (lovely and very efficient) . And the micro filtred water wich is a great initiative. The price were unreasonable for both the drinks and the food, but the location is lovely. No kicks at all in the olio con peperoncino. All together I absolutely do not recomand, if you want real pizza italiano, go to del'Etna a few block away. For the same price you'll get 100% family cooking, a true delightful Italian family in cucina, and incredibly tasteful products. It was closed that day, unfortunately.
JP Snyman★★★★★
Great Italian restaurant, friendly service, nice ambiance
Arika Hendren★★★★★
BEST truffle risotto ever. I mean EVER! The staff was very friendly and the food and drinks were delicious! In a quiet ish area too which is nice. Highly recommend!
L. L.★☆☆☆☆
A high bill for a poor experience. We waited a long time just to be disappointed by the quality of their pizzas, we ordered one 4 cheeses and one mortazza, both less than mediocre, the table next to ours ordered carbonara and i can promise it had nothing to do with the original recipe. I wouldn't recommend it.

This place is disgusting. We ordered a Hugo spritz (very flat and the guy got annoyed when we asked for it to be made again) and carbonara pasta, the pasta was over cooked , too mushy and they said Italian pancetta but it was just pig fat. Won’t even talk abiut the caccio and peppe. They probably changed the cook because last year it was amazing. I would definitely never come back here. Very disappointed.
Daryna Drozdiuk★★★★★
recently visited a pizzeria and was thoroughly impressed with the experience. The pizza was incredibly delicious, made with fresh seafood that tasted absolutely divine. The pasta was also cooked to perfection, offering a wonderful blend of flavors. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The pizzaiolo even added Parmesan to our pizza free of charge, which was a delightful touch. The desserts were delectable and, combined with coffee, only cost €9. Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience, and I would highly recommend this pizzeria to anyone
Brian Gildea★★★★★
Had a couple of meals in Italian Trattoria while in Nantes and both were excellent. Multiple pizzas and a pasta dish. Highly recommend the pizzas. All were delicious. Staff very friendly and helpful. Plenty of options for beer, wine and cocktails available also. Didn't partake but the desserts also looked fantastic.

Good pizza, very tasty. Not a normal Italian restaurant, more like a fast food, but the pizza was actually delicious (Positano)

Good price for money. One of my favorite Italian fast restaurants. Ps: try to avoid lunch time, the service is way better in the non peak hours.

Tips for Choosing the Best Italian Restaurant in Nantes

Finding a great Italian meal in Nantes is rarely difficult, but a little planning can turn a good dinner into an exceptional one. The city’s top tables often fill up quickly, especially on weekends, and understanding what to look for will help you match the right restaurant to your mood. These practical tips are designed to help you navigate menus, timing, and local habits like a regular.

Book ahead, especially on Thursday through Saturday. The most popular Italian spots in Nantes often have limited seating and strong neighborhood followings. Calling a day or two in advance can save you from a long wait or a disappointing walk-in refusal.

Look for menus that change with the seasons. Authentic Italian cooking relies on what is fresh. If you see a menu that never changes, it may rely too heavily on frozen or pre-prepared components. Restaurants that adjust their antipasti and pasta specials are usually making food from scratch.

Pay attention to the pizza oven. A true Neapolitan or Roman-style pizza needs intense, dry heat. If you can see a wood-fired or high-temperature electric oven from the dining room, that is almost always a good sign. The best crusts will be blistered, chewy, and light, never dense or doughy.

Ask about the pasta. Handmade pasta has a texture and bite that dried pasta cannot replicate. Servers are usually proud to tell you which shapes are made in-house each day. If they hesitate or cannot answer, it may not be the fresh experience you are hoping for.

Check the wine list for regional variety. A thoughtful Italian restaurant will offer more than just Chianti and Pinot Grigio. Look for lesser-known grapes like Nerello Mascalese, Verdicchio, or Aglianico. This signals a team that cares about pairing food with the right bottle.

Consider lunch for better value. Many of Nantes’ best Italian kitchens offer a reduced-price lunch menu that includes two or three courses. You can often try the same quality of cooking for significantly less than the evening price, and the atmosphere tends to be calmer.

Don’t skip the antipasti. The first course is often where an Italian kitchen shows its true skill. Cured meats, burrata, grilled vegetables, and fritti reveal the quality of the ingredients before the heavier dishes arrive. A restaurant that excels here is likely to excel everywhere else.

Nantes has quietly become one of western France’s most reliable cities for Italian food, and the restaurants above represent the very best of that evolution. Each one brings a slightly different regional perspective, whether through the char of a Neapolitan crust, the silkiness of a hand-cut tagliatelle, or the simplicity of a perfect tomato sauce.

The beauty of Italian cooking is its generosity, and these tables reflect that spirit. Whether you are gathering friends for a long, wine-filled evening or stopping in for a quick plate of pasta before a show, you will find a welcome that feels genuine. The hardest part is simply choosing which door to walk through first.
