Peñíscola is more than just a postcard-perfect castle rising from the Mediterranean. When you step away from the battlements and the crowded viewpoints, you find a town designed for slow wandering, window shopping, and spontaneous discoveries. The local commerce here balances daily practicality with holiday charm, making it a rewarding destination for both residents and visitors.
Shopping in Peñíscola is not about sterile malls or generic high-street chains. It is about narrow cobbled lanes, family-run boutiques, and the scent of handmade leather drifting out of open doorways. Whether you are hunting for a unique souvenir or simply want to feel the rhythm of local life, the town’s commercial arteries offer an experience that feels authentic rather than manufactured.
The geography of Peñíscola naturally divides its shopping into two distinct zones: the historic old town and the newer mainland area. Each has its own character, pace, and selection of goods. Understanding this layout helps you plan your walking route efficiently, especially during the hot midday hours when many smaller shops close for a traditional Spanish siesta.
In the old town, you will find artisan workshops, local food delicacies, and stores tucked into centuries-old stone buildings. The experience here is intimate, often involving a conversation with the shop owner. In the newer part of town, the streets are wider, the storefronts are more modern, and the range of everyday goods expands significantly.
Shoppers looking for fashion, footwear, and beachwear will find a strong concentration of options outside the historic walls. Meanwhile, those searching for handmade ceramics, local wines, or traditional pastries should head uphill toward the castle. The contrast between the two areas makes a combined shopping walk one of the most enjoyable ways to explore Peñíscola.
What makes the town especially appealing for shoppers is its walkability. You can move from a medieval alley to a sunny avenue in less than ten minutes on foot. This compact scale means you do not need a car or public transport to experience the best retail streets. Comfortable shoes and a reusable shopping bag are the only essentials.
Below, you will find a carefully selected guide to the streets that consistently offer the best variety, atmosphere, and value for shoppers in Peñíscola. Each one serves a slightly different need, so you can choose your route based on whether you want souvenirs, local fashion, gourmet food, or simply a pleasant place to browse.

In winter, it is mostly garments and a few fruit, flowers, and food vendors. I imagine in summer the fruits and vegetable vendors are more robust.

A market with a variety of fruits and vegetables, but mostly clothes.
The best part: a food truck that's definitely worth checking out. I posted some photos.
The downside: watch out for the large, dark red cherries and the flashy strawberries; they're not in season and they're not good.

I was really surprised to see the poor reviews of products from this store.
To balance this I would just like to say I bought a beautiful pair of strappy shoes from here last year which I have never stopped wearing and they remain in good condition and comfortable.
I liked them so much I returned this year to buy two new pairs in a different colour. I have already worn one pair out which are perfect and were immediately admired by my friend who is off to buy her own.
Finally, the lady who served me was lovely and helpful.

I bought my gf 2 sets of silver and gold plated earrings, one with green gem stones and one with blue gemstones surrounded by white smaller gemstones, as well as a fingerring.
all of them, really nice, seem high quality and beautiful.
I can add photos with one of the blue gemstone earrings, as she lost the other. can't add pictures with the fingerring.
she really loves the fingerring.

I came here on holiday for my birthday and my boyfriend got me a beautiful bracelet from this shop, it was on the more expensive side compared to everything else in the store- however as soon as I returned home the bracelet snapped and I’m wondering if they can send me out a new one as I was so upset that it broke so quickly and it was so special as it was from my boyfriend. Please get in touch with me if you can help, I still have the receipt if that helps but I would really love to get my bracelet back as it wasn’t cheap and was sentimental from our first holiday there.
Thank you x

Really bad experience. I bought shoes the lady brought me a "new pair" wrapped it quickly and when I got back home (230 km away) I opened the box and it had a glue mark. Definitely she saw it before selling and definitely I won't go back to castellan to exchange it. Be careful!

Ponteguapa jewelry is the perfect place for the holiday season to find that special gift for your loved ones. They have a wide variety of pendants and rings with coral, amber, turquoise, mother-of-pearl... you won't know which one to choose! Ponteguapa shoe store is also a great place to shop. In winter, they have fantastic boots at very good prices. The quality is excellent. In summer, their espadrilles and sandals are gorgeous. Look at those beautiful flip-flops they have! It's definitely worth a visit and doing your shopping there. I highly recommend it.

A Magnificent Templar Fortress by the Sea ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Visiting the Templar Castle (Castillo de Papa Luna) in Peñíscola is an unforgettable experience. Standing majestically on a rocky peninsula surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, this impressive fortress seamlessly combines medieval military history with breathtaking ocean views.
Walking through the historical chambers, grand halls, and open courtyards really transports you back in time to the eras of the Knights Templar and Pope Luna. The views of the coastline and the old town from the top ramparts are absolutely spectacular.
I highly recommend purchasing the €5 ticket to access the inner fortress and the gardens—it is extremely well worth the price.
The site is remarkably well-maintained, with helpful informational displays that provide great context about its rich heritage. If you are anywhere near Peñíscola, this historic gem is a absolute must-visit!
Simina Strachinescu★★★★★
It's the perfect place to spend your vacation. If you have the chance to stay in the accommodation at the castle, I highly recommend it. The views are absolutely incredible. Waking up to such a breathtaking landscape makes the experience even more special.
Justin Hirst★★★★★
Only €5 for a ticket to explore this very cool 800 year old castle. It has the best views of Peñíscola and the beaches below. There are informative signs throughout the castle with Spanish and English explanations that are informative without being information overload. Stay away from the edges if you're afraid of heights. Your castle ticket also gives you entrance to the artillery gardens just below the castle. We went on a Wednesday in June, around 5pm, and there were very few people there, so plenty of space to take your awesome photos without fighting any crowds. Well worth the money. We only spent about 25 minutes in the castle because we were pressed for time, but you could easily spend and hour or two seeing everything.
Alejandro Perez★★★★★
Steeped in history and blessed with beautiful architecture, this is the perfect place for anyone seeking a genuine glimpse into the past. Add in the magnificent views of both the sea and the town, and you have a place that is well worth exploring.
Jakki Sr★★★★★
Lovely castle and old town, great little media presentation on the Knights Templar, information boards around the castle interior, much bigger than it appears. Gorgeous gardens. Great views across the north and south bays and town. Used in scenes of Game of Thrones as Meereen. Well worth visiting (and not too much of a hike!)
Practical Tips for Shopping in Peñíscola
A little local knowledge goes a long way when you are exploring Peñíscola’s retail streets. The town follows distinctly Spanish rhythms, and knowing when to shop, how to pay, and what to expect from local store owners will make your experience much smoother. These practical suggestions will help you shop with confidence and avoid common tourist frustrations.
Plan around the siesta. Many independent shops in Peñíscola close between roughly 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, especially in the old town and during the low season. Larger stores on the main commercial avenues often stay open, but family-run boutiques rarely sacrifice their lunch break. Do your serious browsing in the morning or early evening.
Carry some cash. While most shops now accept credit and debit cards, small artisan stalls and market vendors sometimes have a minimum spend for card payments or prefer cash. Having twenty or thirty euros in small bills will help you move quickly through smaller purchases without awkward delays.
Ask about local products before buying generic souvenirs. Peñíscola and the wider Castellón province produce excellent olive oil, wine, honey, and ceramics. A shop owner can often tell you exactly where an item was made. Choosing a locally crafted piece not only gives you a better souvenir but also supports the town’s artisans directly.
Wear comfortable, slip-resistant footwear. The old town’s shopping streets are beautiful but often steep and paved with polished cobblestones. Sandals with smooth soles can be dangerous on a downhill slope. Choose shoes with good grip, especially if you plan to carry shopping bags back to your accommodation.
Time your visit around market days. Peñíscola hosts a weekly street market where you can find fresh produce, clothing, and household goods at lower prices than the fixed shops. Checking the local market schedule before your trip allows you to combine the permanent shopping streets with the temporary stalls for the best overall selection.
As the sun softens in the late afternoon and the shop shutters roll up again, Peñíscola’s shopping streets take on a second life. Locals come out for their evening paseo, and the storefronts glow warmly against the stone facades. It is a lovely time to revisit a shop you noticed earlier or to simply enjoy the atmosphere with a cold drink in hand.
Whether you leave with a hand-painted bowl, a pair of leather sandals, or just a bag of local almonds, the act of shopping here feels connected to the town itself. These streets are not just places to spend money; they are living threads of Peñíscola’s daily culture, and walking them is one of the most enjoyable ways to understand the place.
