18 Tourist Attractions in Bordeaux

Bordeaux does not need to shout to be heard. It speaks in the quiet confidence of honey-colored limestone, the soft murmur of the Garonne River, and the gentle clink of a wine glass in a candlelit cave. While many visitors arrive dreaming of vineyard tours, the city itself offers a depth of history and culture that often surprises those who linger. It is a place where 18th-century grandeur coexists with a vibrant, modern culinary scene.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bordeaux boasts one of the largest protected urban ensembles in Europe. Unlike Paris, which can overwhelm with its scale, Bordeaux feels intimate and walkable, inviting you to explore its hidden squares and grand boulevards at a leisurely pace. The city has undergone a remarkable renaissance over the last two decades, cleaning its facades and opening a world-class wine museum that anchors its riverfront.

The secret to enjoying Bordeaux is understanding that it is a city of atmosphere. It is about standing in the shadow of a Gothic cathedral, sipping a noisette at a terrace café, and watching the world go by under the shade of plane trees. The tourist attractions here are not just checkboxes on a list; they are living, breathing parts of a city that has mastered the art of living well.

For the traveler seeking a balance of architecture, gastronomy, and history, Bordeaux is an unrivaled destination in southwestern France. Whether you have a single day or a full week, the city rewards curiosity. You can cross the river for a different perspective or stay in the historic center to feel the pulse of the Bordelais lifestyle.

This guide to the essential sights will help you navigate the city like a local, ensuring you experience both the iconic monuments and the subtle details that make Bordeaux unique. From ancient gates to futuristic wine experiences, these are the stops that define the "Port of the Moon."

Below is a curated selection of the most compelling destinations to include in your itinerary, each offering a distinct flavor of the city’s heritage and contemporary energy.

A significant eighteenth-century monument that highlights the medieval heritage of the city. This grand gate once served as a bell tower and a defensive structure, featuring a massive bronze bell that rings on special occasions. It is a well-maintained landmark that offers a clear look into historical urban design and remains a popular spot for photography.
Rhiannon★★★★★
Nice clock, and surprisingly a church is attached to it. Perfect entryway to the city and lovely restaurants… if you go here pop to Orto around the corner!
Suxant★★★★★
Very beautiful. Very picturesque. Perfect spot for photography. A must visit place.

Such a lovely surprise in the middle of Bordeaux! The Grosse Cloche is a beautiful old bell tower that looks like it came straight out of a fairytale. You can’t go inside most of the time, but even just seeing it from the street is magical. It’s not a big attraction — more of a “wow, look at that!” moment during a walk through the old town. Totally worth stopping for a photo and soaking up the history. There are cute little cafés around too, so it’s a great place for a coffee break.
Kev C★★★★★
Much check landmark of the city! Beautiful area with many cute shops.

I was suprisingly amazed by the collection they possess! The variety of the paintings as well as how they organized everything is pretty much what I would like to see in a museum! The staff is amazingly friendly! And what else shoudl I say? You should go and for sure you will enjoy it! It is quite diverse as well as majestic! You will tha k me later! I am so grateful to have passed by!

Wonderful building and galleries. Because it is a small space overall, it is not overwhelming, and a great place to visit. However, having 2 toilet cubicles for the entire complex is a bit mad. There was a big queue of men and women when we visited. Goodness knows what it will be like in July/August
Jonathan Lo★★★★★
Great museum with a good variety of exhibitions. While not the most famous, all the paintings are of good representation of the era and quite a few local artists.

Love this fine art musuem Lots of arts to see! Make sure you save at least an hour or two to enjoy the art and get lost in the colours!

A nice regional museum. They don’t have the first class art of the Musee d Orsay, but they don’t have the crowds either. They have some very good paintings and the space is very good All in all worth it

The architecture and grandeur of Saint-Andre is simply stunning. The scale is immense. Yet the quietness and tranquility reaches into your very heart. We visited at a time when the organ was being played, the acoustics are incredible. An ethereal experience not to be missed ✨️
David Belsey★★★★☆
This is a large and impressive cathedral. The bell tower is a separate building, adjacent. We were there on a Sunday, where, understandably, there was limited opportunity for visitors to wander around. Best check opening times ahead on Sundays. Apparently the flying buttresses outside supporting the nave ate noteworthy....
Suxant★★★★☆
Beautiful church with a seperate Bell Tower. The building of the church is huge. This place is quite attractive to the eyes. There are many cafes nearby.
Amanda Shoemaker★★★★★
Incredible cathedral and no crowds when I came on a weekday before lunchtime. Really enjoyed the stained glass, vaulted ceilings and reproduced paintings of the columns and walls in the small chapel.
Jennifer Clifford★★★★★
Beautiful gothic style cathedral with a lot of history. Not only was Eleanor of Aquitaine married here but the cathedral witnessed the wedding of Anne of Austria and Louis XIII in 1615. When we visited you can see that there are restoration work being carried out. Felt very peaceful and relaxing walking round. Admission is free

Amazing place! The water reflecrion is also charming, definitely something unique! It is a must if you visit Bordeaux, you will enjoy the architecture of this Square! I am so thankful to have passed by! You will love it! It is definitely worthy it to regard this neoclassical masterpiece and an UNESCO site as well!
Bianca Viegas★★★★★
Seeing Place de la Bourse up close was a wonderful experience. There is place to sit and ponder at the scenery and the buildings. Even though it is close to the roads and the water mirror (which can get incredibly crowded), it was peaceful. Would definitely come again.
Vaneeta PETRICIEN★★★★★
Very lovely area to sit and have an ice-cream or look after your kids running on the mirror fountain. Very easy to access by tram, bike or walking if you are in the city. There was nice feel to the place! I enjoyed it with my daughter!
Chandran Puthiyottil★★★★☆
I visited Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux at night and it was a wonderful experience. The whole area looked magical with the lights reflecting on the beautiful old buildings and the famous water mirror. The fountain and lighting together created a peaceful and charming atmosphere. I spent a few hours just walking around, watching the reflections, and enjoying the calm breeze from the river. The place was lively yet serene — people relaxing, children playing, and tourists taking photos. It’s one of those spots where you can simply sit and take in the beauty of the city. If you are in Bordeaux, an evening visit to Place de la Bourse is a must. It truly captures the heart and elegance of the city.

Beautiful landmark! You can’t miss this from Bordeaux ! I think morning would be the best time to visit!

Located in the southern part of Bordeaux’s historic center, the Basilica of Saint Michael is one of the city’s best-known churches. It forms part of the UNESCO-listed Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France, while the surrounding historic district is also included in the Bordeaux, Port of the Moon World Heritage Site. The basilica itself is free to enter, but a separate ticket is required to climb the famous Saint-Michel spire beside it.
Melanie Dielmann★★★★☆
Walked in unplanned and man did it deliver. It was real, it was raw, it wasn’t polished. We can’t decide if the stain glass was real old or brand new. It is extremely unique its facial details. The ceilings are magnificent, the little nooks all tell a story. This was definitely a God Wink and I loved it!
Bob Whitfield (Bobby's World)★★★★☆
This is an underrated and a poorly maintained, yet outstanding attraction of the city. Yes, it is not shiny and glamorous, but if you take a minute to understand what you are looking at/for, this old church yields a fascinating interior and important history Do not miss the wood carving of St Michael and just as beautiful the alabaster panels with the lengthy history of theft and recovery by the Bordeaux government
Rae Zyon★★★★★
Featuring a soaring freestanding bell tower that reaches 114 meters in height. This historic site is known for its intricate stone carvings, vibrant stained glass windows, and a significant 19th-century organ located within its spacious interior. The surrounding square remains a lively hub of activity, hosting regular markets and offering a variety of local cafes for visitors to enjoy.
Suxant★★★☆☆
A landmark church located right opposite to the flee market. Good structures.

Beautiful ruins! Not so sure what the Google map meant by close, the platform you can see my picture still accessible and it’s free to look at, no ticket required! Anyone visiting Bordeaux should come here as well!
David Stanley★★★★★
The so-called Palais Gallien in Bordeaux, France, was the amphitheater of Roman Burdigata, erected during the 1st century AD. Until the end of the 3rd century as many as 15,000 spectators would watch as gladiators wrestled with wild animals here. On a wall in an alley off Rue du Dr Albert Barraud across the street is a graffiti-style stencil artwork titled Monkeybird.
Mark Oldis★★★★★
What a find! As someone who has visited a lot of Roman sites in Europe, this one was easy to find and the history around the area, including why there is so little left was worth the walk. We approached it from two different streets and spent some time discussing the way that the area would have looked and how large the amphitheatre would have been.
Ninh Ly★★★★☆
NICE BUT NOT MUCH TO IT You can visit this ruin from two streets, though those two streets aren't at all interconnected (you have to walk around). You can see it from the street level, but you can't walk around the ruins yourself. It's an interesting piece of Roman history, but you won't be here any more than 5 minutes, as there's not much more to see other than what you see in the pictures.
Luis Quintero★★★★☆
A hidden spot in Bordeaux. It's interesting but you won't spend more than 20 minutes there 😅

Really cool place to hang out and cool off. There's a lot of good restaurants nearby and a really nice view of the river. There were performers playing the drums and dancing when I went and people sitting on the stairs or on the grass watching. I took some really beautiful pictures and videos here.
Bondiamo★★★★★
The riverfront is beautiful. The 18th-century buildings were designed to present the city as a wealthy and powerful trading center when viewed from the water, and the more modern additions of the riverfront promenade, Miroir d’eau (Water Mirror), green spaces, waterfront markets, cafes, and museums have made the area a fantastic place to wander, go for a bike ride or a run, or just relax in the gardens as the locals do.
neurostella★★★★★
The Miroir d’Eau is the finishing touch that makes the Place de la Bourse feel complete. It operates from April to October, with mist spraying at regular intervals and adding an extra layer of atmosphere to the reflecting pool. Children could probably spend hours playing here. I was especially impressed that visitors are allowed to walk through and interact with the installation, unlike many landmarks in other countries where access is restricted to prevent damage.
Suxant★★★★★
Just short of works. The place is simple outstanding. Photographers paradise. The system used to create the mirror effect is impressive. One must never miss visiting this place and getting themselves clicked.
John Trinkl★★★★★
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the simple yet beautiful Miroir d'Eau. It is genius to create something that reflects the old and the new of a city! It is a wonderful feeling to remove one’s shoes and splash and slide your way across its surface! So many reviewers comment on how nice it is for children. I say it is just as nice for children of all ages…I’m 70 years old and a kid at heart…and I had a blast frolicking in the water! And if you get a clear, calm day, the reflections are amazing!! Go, enjoy…it’s free and it’s beautiful!

An iconic 15th-century bell tower that stands independently from the cathedral. Visitors can climb the 229 steps to reach the top terraces, which offer an expansive 360-degree view of the historic city center and the river. The structure is known for its massive 11-ton bell and the golden statue that crowns its summit.

A beautiful historic landmark in the heart of Bordeaux. The architecture is absolutely stunning, especially when viewed from the square below. The peaceful atmosphere and impressive Gothic design make it a must-visit spot for anyone exploring the city. It's perfect for taking photos, and the surrounding area is clean and lively. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply enjoying the beauty of Bordeaux, this place is definitely worth visiting. Highly recommended!

Nice climb, gets you in shape ! (And a possible break about halfway in) The view at the top is more than worth it though ! Absolutely stunning sights of bordeaux, and great signs and historical explanations. Friendly staff. I'd recommend to anyone, from anywhere, and especially people from Bordeaux such as me who have never actually gone up !
Jakub Šesták★★★★★
We had a great weather. It costs few euro, lots of stairs, but worth the climb. Great view over the city.
Bianca Viegas★★★★★
If you're using the tram, the stop you get off at is Hôtel de Ville. This monument is located right next to the stop and the Cathedral of Saint Andrew. It is wonderful to look at and take pictures of. The surrounding area looks fairly similar so it's like being transported to another time. You have the option to take the stairs to the top which will give you a birds eye view of the city.

A remarkable medieval gateway built in 1495 to honor the victory of Charles VIII. Standing thirty-five meters tall, the structure showcases a distinctive pepper-pot roofs and elaborate stone sculptures. The interior houses a small museum and provides a staircase for visitors to reach a vantage point overlooking the Garonne River and the historic city center. It remains one of the most photographed monuments in Bordeaux due to its well-preserved appearance and central location
Rick Currie★★★★★
It was so nice to stroll from my Hotel on Rue du Catherine at Rue du Parliament Ste Catherine. A short stroll for this old man with a cane. Places for un cafe and a sit in the sun or sbady alley get aways. Intriguing businesses tucked around squares, with ancient Church bells sounding the hour. Your mind can be allowed to slip to a time of your ancestors when the walls of a city protected its inhabitants. So beautiful.

This was our best port so far. Right in the heart of the city. Amazing architecture/history, great shopping, lots of great attractions in easy walking distance. Lots of open spaces and so many casual places to get food and a drink. As the grape/ growing region of the Garonne Valley was so close to the port/ 50 minutes away by bus, we ventured to the village of Saint Emillion, it was beautiful. Our whole experience was excellent.

Great experience. Never seen before kind of a Wine museum. The entry fee is €27 which includes wine tasting also. You get educated about wine and its history in a complete modernized way with the help of technology. One atleast needs 2.5 to 3 hrs minimum to cover everything. Wine gets served at the deck (last floor) which is more like an observatory deck and can almost see the whole city from there.
Jaden Stock★★★★★
This was a fantastic museum. One of the best multi-sensory museum experiences I’ve had. They had things to smell, things to touch, great videos, and a fantastic audio guide on most of the exhibits. We spent a little over two hours in the main hall and then an hour in the tasting through the seasons experience. We actually could have spent another two hours in the main hall but had to leave. My advice: do a quick pass through the entire main hall up front so you get a sense for where you want to spend your time. It’s easy to spend too much time in one part and then be sad you didn’t get more time in some of the cooler parts. Also, I’d only recommend the tasting through the seasons if you’re interested in wine but don’t know much about it. If you’re the type of person who says “this tastes like a red wine” for example. If you’re already kind of a wino I’d skip it and spend more time in the main hall or try the other sit down wine tasting (which we didn’t do).
Sara Langknecht★★★☆☆
Firstly, this was a fantastic exhibition - well structured, very interesting, and many different ways to interact with the learnings. I was disappointed by the use of AI pictures for the six wine families, it’s not like there aren’t many photos of different bottles and glasses of wine already. Additionally the wine (tried the white wine from Bordeaux) that was included in the ticket was simply bad and straight up too cold. When the team recommends the German wine in the Bordeaux wine museum that speaks for itself.
Sandra Enyonam Apatu★★★★★
La Cité du Vin, hoisted majestically within one of the wine capitals of the world did not fail in meeting my expectations for the museum exhibition. The exhibition featured immersive multimedia Installations that allow visitors to learn all they need to know about wine in an interactive way. Ending the permanent exhibition was the complimentary glass of wine to enjoy while taking in the panoramic views of Bordeaux. Such a delightful experience.
beste kaya★★★★☆
A nice museum to learn about the history of wine. The museum shop is excellent and worth a visit on its own. We also joined a wine education session, which was enjoyable but felt a bit basic considering Bordeaux's reputation as a wine capital. Still, it's a good place to visit, especially if it's your first time in Bordeaux.

Beautiful basilica. One of the oldest churches in Bordeaux. It was started in the 100's. The 100's!! Crazy old place. Be sure to check out the crypt. Not as big and fancy as some of the other places, but still very very cool.

The exterior is interesting but not stunning. However, the interior is quite the show. The very clear Romanesque styling of the ribbed vaults are well worth seeing as is the underground crypt.

A former fortress and residence built upon the 14th-century ramparts, of which the horseshoe tower is likely one of the few remaining vestiges, it was constructed at the end of the Hundred Years' War to monitor the inhabitants of Bordeaux, who were prone to rebellion, and to prevent the return of the English to Aquitaine. Today the site of the National School for the Judiciary, only these two towers remain, linked by a raised outer bailey added in the 18th century after the demolition of the curtain wall behind it. The massive round tower is one of the rare examples of early adaptation to artillery. The great keep, with its high roof that was admired by travelers, was razed around 1840.

Great little train and covers lots of little streets and attractions that other vehicles and tours can't get to. Really enjoyed it and was probably the best tourist hour we had in the whole weekend. Really good price too. Definitely worth going because it was lots of fun and driver very helpful, even at the end of the day.

Good overview of old city. The audio was the best of any we've experienced.

Overall, good way to see the city pretty quickly. The train provided headsets guided tour in multiple languages. But the two headsets available in my seat didn’t work or only one side worked. It was enough to keep the kids distracted for a while. I can’t say the audio tour was very interesting but gleaned a few cool facts. This was priced way better than the hop on hop off bus - just no hop on or hop off ability on the electric train.

Lovely way to see Bordeaux, get your bearings and spot places to back to. Well worth 12 euro for 45 minute leisurely drive. Good audio guide

A great way to see all the local sights while saving your energy to walk around and decide on dinner.

Wonderful place, not a designed garden but with a variety of plants and different nature spaces which are inhabited by many birds, frogs, insects, bees, geckos ❤️ I also visited the greenhouse including the exhibition. First of all, a very warm welcome from the lovely man working at the reception and store, who explained everything in English. The exhibition was in French and English, made with love and so many interesting and interactive things to explore - loved it! Also recommend the store 🙂

A fellow traveller yesterday asked me about my visit to the Botanical Garden here and I had to regretfully suggest she seek a different destination. The garden looks like there was investment in design and development that has since languished. The plant beds and water gardens appeared grown over or just scrawny. I have been to much more attractive gardens than this one. I do think the space could be recovered into a beautifu and educational destination, but as of June, 2026, I suggest you choose another place to explore.

This is a pretty Botanical Garden with an array of plants. My favourite was the water plants. I have seen better ones but being free I was impressed with the variety. It's worth the visit if in the Bastide!

This delightful arrangement of flowers spans across vast, green and bright land flourishing with vibrant life. You earn a buzz from visiting this spectacular area, enchanting yourself with a prideful, innocent, charming and peaceful aura. There is no such things in this beautiful botanical garden that may harm ones expierence in any way. The walkways are swept and kept in a tidy manner in such a graceful way. I believe unkempt clothes are frowned upon and that one must look smart and fit for survey. If your a botanical expert, a gardener or a humble person who wants to experience the wonders and joy of this garden, your bound to complete your seek of happiness. You will find such care and love you thought was impossible by only taking a glance to the carefully decorated area. I hope whom is reading this knows that such places are this way because we want it to be that way. Don't destroy a fantastic, one of a kind, nature landmark. Will most definitely come again for a peace of mind.

The botanical garden of Bordeaux is a lovely oasis of peace close to the city center. We reached the garden through the ferry boat since we had to cross the river to get there and it took only ten minutes. The garden is really relaxing. You can either sit on the grass or walk on the trails while looking at all the plants and trees. The small lake is also a beautiful spot. Fully recommended to chill out during a visit to the city.

A wonderful landmark! Read into the history as provides important context. When we went, the surrounding area did not have any festivals so it was peaceful and quiet. Close by is a tram stop called Quinconces. It is a beautiful place and I would recommend visiting it. It is one of those places that you can only appreciate by visiting in person. The landmark itself is amazing to look at and take pictures in front of. Also, close by are some wine bars and restaurants. The only thing the place is missing are some benches and shade.

Tips for Visiting Bordeaux

To make the most of your time in this elegant French city, a little local knowledge goes a long way. Navigating Bordeaux is relatively easy, but understanding the rhythm of the city, its ticketing systems, and its culinary customs will elevate your experience from standard to exceptional.

  1. Embrace the TBM Network: The tram system is not just transportation; it is a lifeline that connects the historic center to the suburbs and the wine regions beyond. Purchase a multi-journey ticket or a city pass that includes unlimited transit to save money and avoid parking headaches.
  2. Look for the "Bouchon" or "Bib Gourmand": While Bordeaux has many Michelin-starred restaurants, you do not need to spend a fortune to eat well. Look for small bistros serving regional specialties like entrecôte à la bordelaise or cannelés for dessert; lunch menus (formules) offer the best value.
  3. Book Wine Experiences in Advance: If you plan to visit the Cité du Vin or take a guided tour to the vineyards of Saint-Émilion or Médoc, book your tickets online before you arrive. The best time slots and English-language tours sell out quickly, especially during the summer and harvest season.
  4. Wear Comfortable, Uneven-Surface Shoes: The historic center is paved with cobblestones and gravel squares. While beautiful, these surfaces can be hard on the feet after a full day of walking. Leave the high heels at the hotel and opt for stylish but sturdy sneakers.
  5. Respect the "Golden Hour" by the River: The west-facing facades of the Place de la Bourse glow magnificently at sunset. Head to the Miroir d’eau or the Pont de Pierre about 30 minutes before sunset to secure a spot for the best photographs and the most romantic atmosphere.

Bordeaux is a city that invites you to slow down and savor the moment. It is a destination where the quality of life is palpable, from the freshness of the produce at the Marché des Capucins to the architectural harmony of the Quinconces. Don’t rush from one monument to the next; allow yourself time to get lost in the side streets of the Saint-Pierre district or sit on a bench in the Jardin Public.

Whether you are a serious oenophile or simply a traveler looking for beauty, Bordeaux leaves a lasting impression. It is a city that has reclaimed its river, polished its history, and opened its arms to the world, proving that sometimes the best way to experience France is to step away from the capital and into the heart of wine country.
