Reims is a city that wears its history with quiet confidence. Known globally as the unofficial capital of the Champagne region, it offers a travel experience that balances hedonistic pleasure with profound historical weight. While many visitors come for the bubbling cellars and prestigious maisons, they often leave equally captivated by the Gothic architecture, Art Deco style, and the resilient spirit of a city that has been rebuilt time and again.
Planning a trip here involves more than just booking a tasting. It requires understanding the rhythm of a city that seamlessly blends the sacred with the celebratory. From the coronation site of French kings to the bustling pedestrian streets filled with modern boutiques and brasseries, Reims offers a diverse itinerary for history buffs, foodies, and architecture enthusiasts alike.
This guide aims to cut through the noise and provide a curated look at the essential experiences. We will explore the monumental landmarks that define the skyline, as well as the hidden corners that offer a moment of quiet reflection. You will find that many of the top attractions are conveniently located within walking distance of each other, making it an incredibly pedestrian-friendly destination.
Understanding the context of Reims enhances the visit. The city suffered immense destruction during World War I, with many buildings reduced to rubble. The subsequent reconstruction in the 1920s gave rise to a unique architectural landscape, where medieval masterpieces stand shoulder-to-shoulder with elegant Art Deco facades, creating a visual dialogue between the ancient and the modern.
As you navigate through the list below, consider the sensory experience of the city. It is the chill of the chalk cellars, the glint of light through stained glass, the taste of a crisp blanc de blancs, and the sight of the cathedral glowing at dusk. Reims is not a place to rush; it is a city to be savored slowly.
Whether you are here for a day trip from Paris or a long weekend of indulgence, this collection of attractions ensures you capture the essence of the city. Let this be your starting point for an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Champagne-Ardenne region.

I have visited quite a few awesome churches on my trip in France, this one is absolutely amazing. Gorgeous church with a lot of information provided in English for visitors. Somebody might had been playing the organ for a practice session, and it sounded phenomenal. Pure craftsmanship.
I hope people are still attending service here and able to maintain it. God bless churches of France.

An Absolute Highlight – WOW Factor Above the Rooftops of Reims!
Wow, I really didn't expect this! You won't find a tour like this in almost any other major city, and it was easily one of the biggest highlights of my trip.
Here are my main takeaways:
Unique Behind-the-Scenes Access: We didn't just get to enjoy the view; we were able to explore the entire roof area, including the impressive wooden framework of the towers. The architecture was unbelievable, and the experience far exceeded my expectations.
Language Barrier? Not a Problem At All: The guided tour was entirely in French, and to be honest, I didn't understand very much. But that didn't detract from the experience in the slightest! The atmosphere, the incredible views, and the sheer craftsmanship spoke for themselves, allowing me to fully enjoy every single minute.
Overall Impression: Experiencing this world-famous landmark from such an exclusive, hidden perspective is simply awe-inspiring.
Verdict: Climbing the towers of the Notre-Dame Cathedral was an absolute highlight of our stay in Reims. If you get the chance to book this tour, do not hesitate—it's an unforgettable experience!

Amazing building and impressive architecture on the inside and outside. Modern stainglass is a welcom twist, but woth 90% of the stone history. This building is massive and very old. Lot of imformatiom in French, German and English. Would love to hear the organ. We parked in the cathedral carpark, but possible to also park on the street as well nearby. Go early if you want to avoide the tour groups.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims is one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in France and a symbol of French history. It was built mainly in the 13th century, after an earlier church on the site was destroyed by fire in 1210.
For centuries, it was the traditional coronation place of the kings of France, including Charles VII in 1429, in the presence of Joan of Arc. The cathedral is famous for its beautiful stained-glass windows, detailed sculptures, and its impressive façade, including the well-known “Smiling Angel.”
It was badly damaged during the First World War but was carefully restored. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the main landmarks of Reims.

Such a pleasure to be visiting this place which was constructed in 412 and then extended in 1124.(the numbers may be incorrect) for FREE!
I got the opportunity to attend the Sunday Messe where 37 french kings were crowned and baptized, I felt really blessed.
very detailed explanations of each window and the carvings, art, etc in French, English, German and Italian languages.
They have their gift shop inside on the entrance left side.
The churches, cathedrals marked the city centre always so it is the city center and it is so huge and beautiful that I couldnt take my eyes off, very detailed architecture which is still intact till date, some of it is withered but proves to be authentic and not artificially renovated.
Has a lot of space outside as well to sit and eat or chat with your group and get mesmerized by this beauty,
some champagne drinking bars on the other side as well, different door. So people can chill around looking over it.
At night also well lit. I would suggest to get an Airbnb infront of it. you ll definitely get a nice view and vibe.

A place of history and many walk on by. Redone in 25/26 and completely different from when I visited in 2019. Great flow and focus on the historical surrender.

The room where WW2 in Europe ended was preserved exactly as it was on 7 May 1945. The museum stands as a reminder of that act and its wider displays tell the story of Reims's role in the war and of those present on that day. An exceptional small museum staffed by a wonderful welcoming team.
Hannah Asquith★★★★★
Fantastic little museum. €5.50 well spent to understand the historical significance of this city 80 years ago. Excellent 5 min film in English to set the scene. Walked through a number of small rooms of photos, documents and period uniforms before reaching the room in which the surrender was signed. Very moving, left as it was with maps and weather reports and daily operation plans on the walls.
Vanessa James-McPhee★★★★★
A wonderful and humbling experience at the Musee de la Reddition. We explored the museum that features the War Room where Germany signed the act to unconditionally surrender and end WW2.
We spent 90 minutes at the museum (which was sufficient) on our way to the Gare de Reims.
Paris and Beyond Tours★★★★★
What a fine little museum this is!
If you are looking for a history break while going to Reims, between 2 champagne houses, that is the perfect place.
It tells the story of the 7th of May 1945, where the first ceasefire was signed between the allies and the axe, this is the first treaty by because Joseph Staline wasn’t happy about the way it was organized . A second one was signed the 8th in Berlin.
I love to remember that once Russian and Europe were allies. I’m grateful that now Germany and France are sibling nations.
What a nice place to visit, you will see the table the first reddition was signed and the war maps.

It was simple but Artisitc & pretty old. The Arches at the edges looked amazing for Hero shots. Along with the name of Reims board and there is a small pathway near the Arch from where the view looks good.
Testimony★★★★☆
I think it’s a pretty space.
They set up hammocks in addition to the seating and eating areas, and it can be a nice little place to relax and chill, especially when the weather is nice.
It’s also right next to the city Centre, train station, and is surrounded by lots of bus and tram stops.
If you’re a more private person who likes very quiet and covered areas, it might not suit you that much though.

Beautiful Arc build a few years ago back in 300 AD, I know, it’s a while back, but it was reasonably renovated and stands crisp and clean. There’s a small cafe and free training facility for a quick pull up session. 👌☀️🍾🇫🇷

Nicely decorated inside and outside. Feels family owned. Menus are in French and they only speak French. So google translate it.

Great collection of vintage cars, predominantly French heritage but a few international ones as well. Lots of forgotten brands.
In addition they have a huge collection of toy cars, motorcycles, kids toys and wall art/signs.
Well worth the €10 entrance fee and a great way to spend an afternoon.

Wonderful assortment of makes of cars and trucks from early 1900's (maybe earlier...I'm not a car buff) in amazing condition , and motorcycles and a couple of old bicycles. A room full of toy and model cars in cabinets, and a small area selling cards, and metal wall hangings to do with the car industry. You can walk through the large rooms at your leisure. Not a lot of information about each car/truck.
Scott Widholm★★★★★
A great little museum, with just tons of cars and motorcycles lined up, with plaques giving a bit of information about most of them. If you are just going to quickly look at some old European cars, you can probably finish in about half an hour. We were reading some of the plaques and commenting about some of them, taking our time, and we spend an hour and a half. If you wanted to read everything, you could probably stay 2-2.5 hours depending on your speed

Gorgeous basilica. A bit south of the main part of the city but easily reachable from some of the champagne houses down this way

A short walk from the Cathédrale Notre‑Dame, the Basilique Saint‑Remi offers a serene glimpse into Reims’ history and elegance. Dating back to the 11th century, its blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture creates a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere. Inside, soaring arches, delicate columns, and beautiful stained-glass windows tell stories of saints and centuries past. Perfectly complementing a visit to the cathedral, the basilica’s timeless beauty and rich history make it a must-see for travelers seeking both spiritual and architectural treasures in Reims.

Basilique Saint-Remi is one of Reims’ most captivating historical sites. The Romanesque architecture, with its graceful arches and serene atmosphere, offers a striking contrast to the nearby Gothic grandeur of Reims Cathedral. The basilica houses the tomb of Saint Remi, who baptized Clovis, the first King of the Franks, making it a place of deep historical and religious significance.
Inside, the stained glass windows fill the church with a soft, colorful light, and the intricate stonework reveals centuries of devotion and craftsmanship. The adjoining museum provides fascinating insights into the basilica’s history and artifacts.
Overall, Basilique Saint-Remi is a must-visit for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a peaceful, awe-inspiring experience in Reims.
PS. Free entry but a donations are welcome

Do not be put off if the museum looks closed - it does - but check the times and see if the front door is open. Entry fees are very low. Max €5,50.

We enjoyed a superb, one-day, private tour of 3 beautiful boutique champagne houses. Katia was incredibly knowledgeable; the perfect host and tour leader. On the day nothing could be faulted. We went on a half-day tour with Katia and it was an amazing experience! She took us straight from the train station which was a little bit out of Reims and let out in the centre of Reims (even made a reservation for us at a local restaurant when she found out that we wanted to go there). The tour itself was very thorough, so after half day we felt that we knew everything about champagne. The degustation was also very well balanced and we enjoyed it very much!! I recommend it highly, especially if you want to experience Champagne uniquely.

Miroir d'eau des Hautes Promenades in Reims is a fantastic park and a true urban oasis. Interesting fort museum charting it's history from its Inception
Free Parking is a short walk away up some steps. Access around the outside of the museum is available at all times. The museum however only accessible when open. Usually 10am to 6pm. Hours may vary depending on time of year. Small gift shop on site and a couple of vending machines along with toilets
Information panels guide you around the exhibits. The museum has the largest collection of German helmets along with many other artifacts and exhibits
Finally staff very friendly and helpful.
I visited during a heatwave so rushed through things a bit but well worth the visit

You can come visit even if the museum is closed. You will obviously not have access inside to see the story, but you can still walk all around the fort. The information and the artifacts are top notch. It is recommended to have around 1 hour to fully complete it and read everything. Parking is avaible for free.

We only visited outside exposition and not the museum itself because we came outside of museum opening hours. Very interesting for the kids because they see what the fort is, see the large cannons, see flags of the war participants.
The part of the exhibition is the monument devoted to the Russian expedition corps sent to French allies to support the defence.
Otto von Leuchtturm★★★★★
This is one of the places I've enjoyed the most while visiting Champagne. The display in the main corridor outlines the history of the fort and the progress of World War I in general. The smaller rooms along it are filled with either collections of weapons, uniforms and other objects or dioramas, all of this well made. The outside portion of the fort has plaques describing what-is-what as well. There are a few interactive bits and some footage from the time period, and a lot of objects such as postcards, novelty items, posters, everyday items etc. So it gives you a lot of perspective both on WWI as a whole and in a more "close" or "human" sense. My one complaint is something that I've noticed in some other museums in France. The displays in the main corridor are in French, English, German and even Braille (French, I assume). Alas, everything else is in French only. This isn't much of a problem if a plaque just says "French cavalry helmet", but there were some items that had additional explanations given and I feel like I could have learned a lot more. Google won't let me take half a star away, though, and other than this I think this is a great place to visit, so I'm giving it a five. Some two-three hours seems like a good estimate for how long a visit takes. Well, maybe four if you are very thorough.

Tips for Visiting Reims
To make the most of your time in the capital of Champagne, a little forward planning goes a long way. While the city is welcoming and easy to navigate, knowing a few local logistics can save you time and enhance your overall experience. Here are some practical tips to help you navigate Reims like a seasoned traveler rather than a passing tourist.
- Book Champagne Cellar Tours in Advance: The most famous Champagne houses (like Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger, and Ruinart) have limited capacity and sell out quickly, especially during summer and the harvest season in September. Do not expect to walk in and get a tour; secure your spot online weeks ahead of time.
- Wear Comfortable Shoes: Reims is deceptively compact, but you will walk a lot. The cobblestone streets of the historic center and the uneven floors of the ancient Gallo-Roman chalk quarries require sturdy, flat footwear. High heels and slick soles are a recipe for discomfort.
- Respect the Lunch Hour: Many shops, boutiques, and even some smaller attractions close for a significant lunch break, typically between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Plan your museum visits for the morning or early afternoon, and align your schedule with the local dining rhythm to avoid staring at locked doors.
- Utilize the Tram System: While the city center is walkable, the tram is excellent for reaching outlying attractions or returning to your hotel after a long day of tastings. The system is modern, efficient, and connects the train station to the main points of interest.
- Explore Beyond the Grandes Marques: While the big names are impressive, do not miss the opportunity to visit smaller, family-run grower Champagnes. Visiting a "vigneron" in a nearby village or a boutique tasting room in the city often provides a more intimate, educational, and affordable experience.
- Check Cathedral Light Show Times: If you are visiting in the summer, the "Rêve de Couleurs" light show on the cathedral facade is a must-see. It runs on specific nights after dark, so check the local tourism office schedule upon arrival to ensure you do not miss this free, spectacular event.
Reims offers a rare balance that few destinations can match. It is a place where you can stand in the spot where Joan of Arc stood, walk through tunnels carved by the Romans, and then toast to the good life with the finest sparkling wine in the world. The city does not overwhelm you with noise; rather, it invites you to look closer, taste deeper, and appreciate the layers of history that have shaped its character.
Ultimately, a trip to Reims is an education in French heritage and the art of living. By prioritizing the right attractions and moving at a relaxed pace, you will leave with a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship—both architectural and viticultural—that defines this remarkable city. Bon voyage et santé!
