15 Best Steakhouses in Lyon

Lyon wears its title as France’s gastronomic capital with a confidence that extends far beyond the city’s famous bouchons and silk-weaving history. While the traditional Lyonnais cuisine of andouillette, quenelle, and cervelle de canut often steals the spotlight, there is a parallel culinary identity rooted in open flames, deep mahogany crusts, and the unmistakable aroma of rendered fat.

For locals and visitors who measure a city’s character by the quality of its beef, Lyon offers a remarkable depth of steakhouse culture that blends French butchery with international grilling techniques. The city’s geography plays a quiet but crucial role in this story. Lyon sits at the crossroads of France’s most revered cattle-rearing regions, including Charolais, Limousin, and Aubrac.

This proximity means that the best tables in the city receive cuts that have been dry-aged, rested, and selected with an obsession that rivals the finest wine cellars. A steak in Lyon is rarely just a steak; it is a lesson in terroir, breed, and the patience required to transform raw muscle into something silky and profound.

Yet navigating the steakhouse scene here requires more than simply following the scent of smoke. The city offers everything from discreet, marble-topped institutions where waiters carve tableside to modern, minimalist rooms where Japanese binchotan charcoal meets French beef.

Some establishments celebrate the unadorned purity of a thick-cut côte de boeuf, while others push boundaries with smoked bone marrow butter or sauces built from reduced red wine and shallots. The service culture in these dining rooms also sets them apart. In a city that takes hospitality seriously, the best steakhouses employ servers who understand doneness as a precise science, not a guess.

They ask about your preference for char, explain the difference between a two-week and a five-week dry-age, and know exactly which Côte-Rôtie or Saint-Joseph will cut through the richness of the fat. This is not transactional dining; it is a guided experience.

For the discerning diner, the search for the perfect steak in Lyon often becomes a journey through the city’s distinct neighborhoods. From the cobbled lanes of Vieux Lyon to the bustling brasseries of the Presqu’île and the quieter residential corners of the 6th arrondissement, each area offers a different interpretation of what a steakhouse should be. Some rooms are hushed and romantic, others loud and celebratory, but all share a reverence for the main ingredient.

Below, we have assembled a curated guide to the finest addresses where beef is treated with the seriousness it deserves. Whether you are celebrating a milestone, closing a business deal, or simply satisfying a carnivorous craving, these dining rooms represent the very best of Lyon’s steakhouse tradition.

We were really looking forward to our visit to the restaurant and were not disappointed. The ambiance, the warm welcome, and the knowledgeable advice from the waitress were outstanding. The main course was very well prepared, but the appetizer in particular won us over with its delicate flavor. Despite the restaurant being very busy, the service was attentive and professional a well coordinated team running like swiss clockwork. Even minor mishaps were handled charmingly and with humor. All in all, a thoroughly successful visit— highly recommended.

The best calves liver I’ve ever had in my life. Seasoned and cooked to perfection. Service was 5*.

Outstanding restaurant for any fun of meat. They offer an outstanding variety of cuts for bœufs, lamb and cochons. Meet quality is superb and renders traditional French way of cooking meet on fire with an impeccable tenderness and matching with sauces based on butter. Wine card is well crafted, you will have a variety of choice. Ambience in the resto is cosy, funny with lots of details that each meat fun will appreciate. Always take reservation, waiting time is at least 2 weeks and the resto is rather small and extremely popular. Price is high and fully corresponds to the quality you get.

It was pouring rain. Our booking was 7:30pm, we arrived and were the only customers there. We had second thought for a minute. After we were seated, within the next few minutes, other customers came in and the place was full house. We were excited and overwhelmed with the meat display and the menu. And yes, we ordered too much again. For starter, the two of us shared the Roasted Bone Marrow (Os à Moelle). Very filling for us... at the next table, four people were sharing this. For plats, we ordered the Tartare Limousin Classique and Entrecote Limousine 400g. The steak came with a potato gratin and we also had a side green salad. The meat quality was good and the taste was on the spot. The potato gratin was done perfectly with crispy top and well seasoned. Perhaps we should have just ordered two plats only... so we can finish the whole potato gratin. The restaurant is buzzling and can be noisy if you are sitting next to a large table. Staff is pleasant and generally accommodating. Although there is a long list of interesting fromages and desserts, we have simply no room for dessert this time.

Possibly the best steak I’ve ever had. There’s not much more I can say than that!

This was a recommendation from the hotel we were staying at when asked for a steak restaurant. Made the reservation through their website which was easy enough and menu was simple and uncomplicated. We don’t speak French but the staff tried very hard to explain the various cuts of meat which was appreciated. We settled for the daily special dry aged beef and the rib eye. They tried very hard to get us to order starters but most starters were meat centric as well and we didn’t feel like it so passed. To our surprise, within 10min of ordering we received the steaks and sides. Our steaks were underdone, poorly seasoned and didn’t enjoy them at all. Sides were not particularly nice either. The local Syrah salvaged the enjoyment to an extent but would not be able to recommend this place.

Calling all meat lovers! B.L.O. Restaurant in Lyon is a carnivore's dream come true. This lively steakhouse specializes in barbecue perfection, and let me tell you, they do not disappoint. The highlight of my meal was the enormous Irish tomahawk steak. It was cooked to absolute perfection – juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The portion size was incredibly generous, so be prepared to come hungry (or share with a friend!). But B.L.O. isn't just about the massive cuts. The entire experience was fantastic. The service was exceptional - friendly, attentive, and always happy to accommodate any requests we had. Whether you have a preference for your steak or need help navigating the menu, the staff is there to ensure a smooth and enjoyable dining experience. Here's the kicker: With such amazing food and impeccable service, it's no wonder B.L.O. is almost always booked solid. My biggest tip is to reserve a table in advance, even if it means paying the 30 euro deposit. Trust me, it's worth it to secure your spot at this Lyon gem. In short: Meat lovers rejoice! B.L.O. offers perfectly cooked, high-quality barbecue meats. The Irish tomahawk is a must-try. Friendly and attentive service ensures a smooth dining experience. Reservations are highly recommended! If you're looking for an incredible steakhouse experience in Lyon, look no further than B.L.O. Restaurant. Just be sure to book in advance so you don't miss out!

Everything is good. We ordered piece du boeuf today is filet which was nice. And we ordered the cochon not bad but a little bit too fatty so some parts cooked unevenly. Just one thing, for an almost 50 covers restaurant, there’s only one bathroom. Sometimes needs to wait for many people. Overall recommended.

Unfortunately, very disappointed, maybe I came with high expectations. We ordered the beef tartar which wasn’t bad but neither good. Our rib eye was overcooked and the fries were drenched in oil couldn’t eat them, the best part was the wine and service. Overall sad experience.
Pauline Oldemeier★★★☆☆
The food was good but the gyozas were a little burnt on the outside. Although the quality of the meat was good, it arrived cold. Unfortunate! The service was nice but the space was a little to tight.

The food was absolutely magnificent—each dish beautifully prepared and full of flavor. Shoutout to Gigi for the great rec! We were served by a new staff member, so there were a few hiccups (like needing two trips to bring the right wine), but nothing that overshadowed the overall experience. There’s definitely room for improvement in service, but the food alone is worth the visit.

What a delightful, intimate restaurant! Friendly, fast, accommodating service. Wonderful food with really quality, locally sourced meats. I had the tournedos, which were tender and perfectly cooked in a beautiful sauce. Prices were very reasonable.

Best night in France! What an amazing experience. We had enough “haute cuisine” to last a lifetime and wanted a simple and more immersive French dining experience. From time we walked into the restaurant we felt welcome (like family). We immediately befriended our table neighbors and our adventure began! The food was great, only surpassed by a once in a lifetime experience of connecting with new friends we will definitely reconnect with. This is the place to come for an authentic and real connection to the genuine warmth of beautiful French people and culture. One of the most memorable nights of my life that I will forever chase in future travel adventures. Just happily approach this experience and receive rich returns!

Amazing restaurant, I had the bavette which was really delicious, the fries are fresh and taste even better than the meat. We had the Bissau with rum and unexpectedly wonderful combination that has the best of both worlds. Couldn’t recommend it more.

This restaurant makes me happy every time I visit. Today, I had an amazing meal and once again left feeling very happy. Our server, Tina, was incredibly hardworking and efficient. She was taking care of many tables at the same time, yet she still managed to give each one personal attention. Whenever we asked for something, she brought it quickly and was exceptionally kind throughout our visit. She speaks English, and as soon as she realized we were tourists, she was very helpful. Whenever we struggled to express ourselves, she immediately understood what we meant and guided us. It genuinely felt as if we were guests in Tina’s own home. We were extremely satisfied with our experience. We visit this place every time we come to Lyon (we were here again about nine months ago), and we left just as happy then as we did today. They always provide complimentary water, which I think is wonderful for travelers and tourists who have been walking around all day. Five stars for Tina, the hardworking staff and the excellent food. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Great food and service. We had this famous dish and our expectations were exceeded. The waiter was very friendly and guided us through the menu. Located in a corner for a great afternoon.

Great food, great service, and great ambiance. This is a branch of the famous antricote place in Paris. Formula menu is the same consisting of salad beef with french fries and the sauce, and dessert and coffee. Everything is as good as the partis branch. The waiters are generously offering as much french fries as you can eat. And, they make nice wine suggestions.
Pansh★★★★☆
After waiting in the cold for a long time it was great to finally try the food at this place. Menu is simple: meat, fries, salad, a selection of drinks. The food was good, but the meat portion was tiny. If it wasn't for the fries you are definitely getting out hungry. However, it was reasonably priced. Service is world class. Worth the wait? Maybe.
Jaqueline Sandoval★★★★★
I visited this place for dinner and I’d definitely recommend it. Although it’s quite a touristy spot, I really enjoyed it. The prices are reasonable, the food was very good, and the service was good as well. It can get quite busy, so you may have to wait a little before getting a table, but I think it’s worth it. Overall, I had a very good experience and would happily come back.

Wonderful dining experience! Nice interior, but we ate outside. The duck and steak were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Veggies seem rare on French plates, but this had a delightful side of roasted veggies with pesto. Cheese plate for dessert was great, starring a local soft cheese, the St Marcelline. Owner was very friendly (spoke good English too) and the music drifting out from the restaurant was an unexpected pleasant surprise (Foreigner and The Cure!). Highly recommend.

First of all, there’s a lot of restaurant that requires money in order to reserve. Les oies Sauvage you don’t have to pay a fee in order to reserve a table is already so amazing and down to earth and the dishes never disappoint me. During my short stay in Lyon i’ve visited this amazing restaurants 3 times as a steak lover. I’ve tried different cuts dry age beef here, every time it amazes me. All the staff here are extremely helpful and friendly. Hands-down, my favorite restaurant in Lyon!

The food is very tasty, the service is warm. And i really like the atmosphere of the whole restaurant. As a tourist, no doubt this restaurant will be one of my nice memories to Lyon.

After a long run to Mont Thou, this was the perfect place to have a delicious lunch as a reward. Food was all delicious and fresh and the menu du jour was a very reasonable price for such quality. The staff were very friendly and tolerated my poor attempts at French, graciously using English wherever necessary. Highly recommended.

Great service and a very delicious steak plate. The chef is a real master. I highly recommend the wagyu steaks (on the right). The wine was great, so were the starters. As an area of improvement: I would think about enhancing the beer menu - like adding a good IPA.

Perfect Dining Experience Had steak, wine, and cheesecake at Butcher in Lyon, and everything was absolutely perfect. The steak was cooked beautifully, the wine complemented the meal wonderfully, and the cheesecake was a delightful finish. Excellent food, great atmosphere, and a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience.

One of the best steak house I’ve ever been to. I haven’t felt the same about steak since this place. We had different Wagyu cuts and each one of them was tasty, full of flavor. The service was amazing, very attentive. The appetizers were good as well, and the spicy cocktail was the best.

BEST BURGER IN FRANCE. I have slotted this spot into my All time Rank of #3 for burgers. Ranking 40+ burgers from Texas, Los Angeles, Paris, Phoenix, Denver, Chicago and more. You cannot beat the quality. Quality. Quality. Beef was on point. Bun was fresh made. Toppings simple, yet executed to perfection. This culinary team deserves to be recognized. Great job.

Quality food! The meat and everything served was of good quality, even though it’s on a bit expensive side. The staff were very friendly and polite. I really enjoyed the music taste they have. Nice music and videos in the background!

Overall good food and a reasonable price. However, the idea of showing you a concert on big screen didnt really fit with me and the music was too loud (but they did turn it down once i asked). The waiters were super friendly and great ! Maybe change the music to show random concert songs. I dont like Phill Collins but i had to listen to him for 1h30...

Meat lovers… this is your place in Lyon. Don’t miss it. Amazing smoked halal meat and chicken. I personally tried the brisket burger and it was so tasty and juicy. Not too fatty. The portion was big enough. Be sure to go hungry to be able finishing your meal. Special thanks for our host who didn’t give his name, but instructed the waiter Faisal to help us get the car to just in front of the door for easier ride for my mother. Faisal did it thankfully with big smile and great hospitality. Thanks a lot again for both of you. Highly recommended

If you’re a meat lover, this place is an absolute must! The short ribs were melt-in-your-mouth delicious—tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Every dish we tried was a hit, especially the perfectly grilled meats that were cooked just the way we like them. The ambiance was cozy yet modern, and the whole dining experience felt smooth and relaxed. But what really made our night stand out was the outstanding service. A special thanks to Gio—he was incredibly professional, friendly, and attentive. He made us feel welcome from the moment we sat down and gave great recommendations. Definitely one of the best spots around for quality meats and top-notch service. We’ll absolutely be back soon!

À go to place for a date of meat-lovers. This is a small restaurant for 12 table with calm and cosy ambience. The food offering is really good, with 3 options for steaks, degustation options to share between several persons. Fish and seafood options are also available. To try: steak as main course and octopus salad as starter. Try also the offered Argentinian wines. The personnel is quite helpful, speaks English and attentive without intruding into your evening. Expect to pay about 50-60 eur per person and make sure that you have a reservation at least 3-4 days in advance

Delicious Argentinian steak—cooked to perfection. A must-visit for any steak lover.
Yani MEtherencer-Nazareno★★★★☆
Steak was good instead of excellent as we ordered Medium but some were kind of Medium-well. It also wasn’t as tender as I thought but it was a pretty big cut (ordered the sharer 600g butterfly steak). Maybe it needs to be ordered as medium rare or rare. Server was friendly and helped us navigate through the menu as we didn’t speak French apart from the very basics. I would still recommend it for others to try but it was pricey so I expected it to be 5/5. I did love the seasoned veggies and fries however. I love the 2/3 sauces provided too (chimichurri and the one with tomatoes), didn’t like the barbecue sauce as much.

Popular steakhouse here in Lyon. I was told it used to be an old slaughterhouse. The decor is simple and not pretentious. It's warm and comfortable. You see the dry aged beef in the closet. The menu is simple yet comprehensive at the same time, not many different choices but many different types of steak. The serving was not large but a good size. The fries were good and the long beans were OK. The food was good but I've had better steak in pride places. The prices were reasonable. We had a half bottle of wine, it was also just OK. The service was good and efficient. Overall I probably wouldn't return considering the location was a bit outside of town, in a more industrial area of the city

Exceptional from start to finish! Ultra-fresh ingredients, top-quality meat, perfectly cooked and delicious. The Tunisian cuisine is authentic, generous, and full of flavor. The service is top-notch: a warm, quick, and professional welcome. A must-try for kosher food in Lyon's 6th arrondissement.

We came for lunch yesterday as a party of four and were delighted. The dishes were very good and generous, with excellent quality meat. The ribeye steak was very large, the side dishes were delicious, and the appetizers were truly excellent. The fondant was very good. The service was top-notch; the staff was very kind and welcoming. In Lyon, there are very few kosher restaurants of this quality, both in terms of taste and portion sizes. We sincerely hope this establishment will continue to thrive. We will gladly return.

Excellent kosher restaurant in Lyon. Very high-quality meat, perfectly cooked, and generous portions. The atmosphere is elegant and welcoming, perfect for dinner with friends or family. Quick, friendly, and respectful service. Finally, a true kosher restaurant in Lyon that combines fine dining, a modern setting, and strict adherence to kashrut. Special mention for the grilled meats and homemade side dishes. I recommend it to anyone looking for a good kosher restaurant, kosher meat, Jewish restaurant, or kosher steakhouse in Lyon. A truly excellent kosher address in the 6th arrondissement.

A traditional French cuisine restaurant in the old town of Lyon. The service was good and most of the food ordered were good too. Recommended to try the escargot, the steaks, the duck. The French onion soup had too much bread pieces in and too little soup. The lamb was only ok but not fantastic. Pork and veal dish was also only ok. The foie gras was not to our liking.

Nice little restaurant located in old town. Extremely friendly and helpful staff, very prompt and very very attentive! For food I had a steak which was actually quite tasty! I’m not a huge expert on steak however it left me happy! Only reason I didn’t give it a 5 star is coz it just needed a little more “wow” factor on the flavour. Nevertheless it was good overall!

Average tourist trap. Food is just ok. Service hard to get a grip on. Insisting manners. Don'tt be fooled by the nice location. Uneaten bread gets redistributed to other guests. Seen it at the bread table....

Lovely staff and food! Would recommend. Sylvie was wonderful.

The Maitre Boeuf is a great address for meat lovers, even though the quality of the meat was not so convincing. But just for the waiters the restaurant is worth visiting. We had a great night and the young waitress is one of a kind and knows her Metier perfect. Many thanks!

An INCREDIBLE Japanese restaurant. We visited twice; once where we ordered regular dishes and once where we tried the BBQ experience. The staff are very kind and accommodating to provide a demonstration and instructions on how to get the best of your BBQ experience. I definitely recommend this for all Japanese cuisine lovers. 10/10!

We had an absolutely wonderful experience, one you won’t regret, but rather walk away saying ‘so glad we did this.’ On my Lyon adventures, it shot straight to the top of my list on our last evening, leaving all the local spots behind. Thank you so much. Everything was truly beautiful. 🙂

Do not be fooled by this restaurant glowing comments and positive reviews. Unfortunately it was a disappointing experience, despite the beautiful presentation of the meals, the quality of the meal was not up to the level. Except for the Baba ghanouj, the food—from hommos to chich taouk to kefta brochettes—has nothing to do with the genuine Syrian/Mediterranean cuisine. Expensive for below average products. Not recommended.

Food was amazing, very flavorful and full of well chosen spices! Very kind man and quick service. Reasonable prices for what it is and many options.

Had dinner here during a recent trip to Lyon. The restaurant is in a relatively quiet and residential area of Lyon, easy to reach and specializing in Middle-Eastern grill dishes. I went for the menu du chef, with a starter, main and dessert. For starter, I had moutabal, which was nice and tasty but quite a big portion and a bit samey after a while. Also the bread that came with it could have been more succulent and I’ve had better bread in other restaurants of the same style. For the main, I went for the kefte, which was certainly the highlight. The meat was tender, juicy and well seasoned. The rice was very good too. If anything, the portion could have been slightly bigger. For the dessert, I had the baklava. They were perfectly fine, a bit less rich in flavor than others I’ve had though. Overall a tasty meal and certainly recommended for the fair price but with some room for improvement. Service is good and friendly!

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Steakhouse in Lyon

Selecting the right steakhouse is rarely about finding the most expensive cut on the menu; it is about matching the room, the cooking style, and the breed of cattle to your personal preferences and the occasion.

Lyon’s dining scene rewards diners who ask questions and understand what they are ordering. The following practical guidance will help you navigate menus, avoid common disappointments, and elevate your overall experience.

1). Know your French beef breeds

The three most common premium breeds you will encounter are Charolais, Limousin, and Aubrac. Charolais delivers a lean, muscular texture with a clean, beefy flavor. Limousin is similarly lean but often slightly more tender.

Aubrac, prized for its marbling and nutty sweetness, is frequently the choice of connoisseurs. Ask your server which breed is currently on offer and do not hesitate to request a recommendation based on your preferred texture.

2). Understand French doneness levels

French steak doneness does not translate directly to the American or British scale. “Bleu” is essentially seared on the outside and nearly raw within. “Saignant” is rare with a cool red center.

“À point” is medium-rare to medium, often the safest choice for those who want warmth without dryness. “Bien cuit” means well done and is generally discouraged by French chefs for premium cuts. If you are unsure, order one level rarer than you normally would.

3). Ask about the aging process

Dry-aging is not a marketing gimmick in Lyon’s best houses; it is a craft. A steak aged for 21 days will taste noticeably different from one aged for 45 or 60 days.

Longer aging intensifies the nutty, almost blue-cheese-like notes and tenderizes the meat. If a restaurant advertises a specific aging room or butcher, ask how long the current cuts have been aged and whether the aging is done in-house.

4). Consider sharing a large cut

Many of Lyon’s finest steakhouses offer côte de boeuf or tomahawk steaks designed for two or more diners. Sharing a thick-cut rib section is not only more economical than ordering two individual steaks, but it also allows the kitchen to serve the meat at its optimal resting temperature. The presentation, often carved tableside, adds a theatrical element that individual portions cannot match.

5). Pair the sauce and wine carefully

Traditional French steak sauces such as béarnaise, au poivre, and bordelaise are rich and buttery. If your steak is heavily marbled, a simple herb butter or a squeeze of lemon may serve you better than a heavy cream sauce.

For wine, look beyond Bordeaux. Northern Rhône reds such as Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, or Crozes-Hermitage offer the peppery, smoky notes that flatter charred beef without overwhelming it.

6). Book ahead and ask for the counter or grill seat

The best steakhouses in Lyon are often small, and prime evening slots disappear days in advance. If you enjoy watching the craft, request a seat near the grill or open kitchen. Watching a chef manage multiple cuts over wood or charcoal is part of the theater and deepens your appreciation for the precision involved.

Lyon’s steakhouse scene is a reminder that French gastronomy is not solely about technique and sauce; it is also about respect for raw materials and the confidence to leave them largely alone. A perfect steak, after all, needs very little beyond salt, fire, and time. The restaurants on this list understand that restraint is the hardest skill to master.

As you explore these addresses, you will notice that the best experiences come from a willingness to trust the kitchen. Let the chef guide the doneness, let the sommelier choose the wine, and let the room set the pace. In a city that has spent centuries refining the art of the table, the steakhouse remains one of its most honest and deeply satisfying expressions.
