Montpellier has a way of making you curious. Beneath its sunlit squares, medieval lanes, and modern tram lines lies a cultural landscape that feels far larger than the city’s size would suggest. For visitors and locals alike, its museums offer a way into that deeper story, from grand academic collections to intimate artists’ studios.
Unlike Paris or Lyon, Montpellier doesn’t overwhelm you with institutional scale. Instead, it rewards the unhurried explorer. You can spend a morning with the Old Masters, wander through a private mansion filled with decorative arts, and still have time to sit outside with a coffee before the next gallery opens.
What makes the museum scene here distinctive is its variety. One hour you might be examining a Delacroix sketch; the next, you could be standing in the preserved apartment of a local painter or learning about the history of pharmacy in a chapel-like hall. Many of these spaces are housed in buildings as compelling as the works they contain.
This guide focuses on practical value. You’ll find museums that match different interests, travel styles, and schedules. Whether you’re planning a rainy-day itinerary, a family outing, or a solo cultural deep-dive, the following selections cover the essential and the unexpected.
I’ve also included advice on tickets, timing, and how to pair nearby visits. The goal is to help you make confident choices without wasting time on places that don’t suit your taste.
Below are the 15 best museums in Montpellier, each chosen for the quality of its collection, the distinctiveness of its setting, and the overall visitor experience.

One of my favorite places I had the honor of visiting during my Erasmus+ experience. I was very lucky to visit the museum in the first week of the month (when the visiting is free) and the security service was really friendly. One of them actually wanted me to see the Fallen Angel picture (which unfortunately was moved away prior to my visit, so it wasn't there sadly) and rushed together to the place it was supposed to be at the end of the program. He was also sad when he realised they moved the picture, but his willingness to help me were extremely comforting. Its a must visit for everyone that the opportunity of travelling in Montpellier. (They also have cute souvenirs)

Immensely impressed by this museum! You cannot tell me that you have been to Montpellier without visiting Musée Fabre! It is forbidden, illegal, disallowed and highly disregarded to say that sentence without having passed by to this museum! I was amazed by their diversity of art collections they possess, as well as the nice staff, beautiful walls and nicely designed building where everything seems to be well arranged! I thank you profoundly for this unforgettable experience!
David Smith★★★★★
Excellent, fairly large museum with paintings and more through the ages. An admission fee applies. To see it thoroughly would take 2 days.
Kari Q.★★★★★
Great museum, easy flow from ground flooor to top floor. Mixture of art and sculptures with a few beautiful pieces of furniture as well. Cool and comfortable on a hot day. At 9€ per adult it's a bargain. If you're like us and went shopping before visiting, they have lockers. Highly recommend 🇨🇦
Danny Lin★★★★★
One of the finest art museums in southern France and a hidden gem in Montpellier. The museum features an impressive collection that spans several centuries, from classical masterpieces to modern works, making it an enjoyable experience for both art lovers and casual visitors.
The galleries are spacious, beautifully curated, and easy to explore at your own pace. I especially appreciated the mix of historic and contemporary art, which creates a diverse and engaging experience. The peaceful atmosphere also makes it easy to spend a few relaxing hours admiring the collection.
If you're visiting Montpellier, Musée Fabre is definitely worth adding to your itinerary. Whether you're interested in art, history, or simply looking for a quiet escape from the busy streets, this museum offers a memorable and rewarding experience.

Visited here to see the Raymond Depardon exhibition, do pardon me for saying I loved it! The girlfriend abandoned me for a couple days (let's go?) but I had a brilliant time here, the exhibition was free yet extensive. Brilliant quality of prints and framing. Would have liked a little gift shop where I could buy some prints or postcards but no star deductions because we can't always get what we want.
Estée-Mathilde Lambin★★★★★
I was so impressed by this place. The exhibition was beautiful and informative, with friendly staff. They had booklets available and free posters too. Highly recommended!
Graham Williamson★★★★★
Exhibition was very well done; free and interesting. We came across it while walking in the park but it should be a destination.

We arrived when it should be open and it is shut even though the sign on the door says it should be open. Waste of a trek in the heat. I would call before traipsing to it.

Amazing experience! Profundely impressed by the quality of the street art and the interactive art collection they had! Moreover, everything seemd to be so nicely organized and seeing the last sacred and mysterious part of Voglio Bénédicte was the cherry of the cake! I was speechless at seeing the mixture between modern and classicisme! I tha k you so much for this experience and the staff is kind and always there for you if you have any questions or in case you want to purchase any art objects!

An amazing museum to visit to get to know the street art in Montpellier. Right now, they had exhibitions focused on showcasing local figures, and Montpellier’s growing relationship with graffiti
Justin Wang★★★★★
This is a hidden gem in Montpellier. I have to admit, the location is not ideal. I am staying in the Old Town and you have to take the tram to get here and walk. It's located in a suburban neighborhood between houses where people live so it seems out of place. That said, it was such an amazing experience. The staff were so kind to me, despite my terrible lack of French. And it seems small but by the time I got out of the temporary exhibit and into the main exhibit I was swamped. My favorite artist was Yasuke. She had a QR code you could scan to listen to her music while looking at her art and it was very participatory. I have a new outlook on street art now. I never thought about how street art is inherently recyclable, because the artists are on a budget and use scraps and whatever they can to save money. I also never thought about street art as a method of protest, like the Berlin wall: it's a way to express freedom. They had a video which showed a street and how the art changed over four years. That was interesting. I definitely recommend you come here. The museum did not have a lot of visitors and it deserves a lot more. Come and support!
Gareth Brown★★★★★
This whole experience is just fun and engaging and recommended. It's outside the heart of town so you take a tram (so cheap!) to an area of new-builds, non-descript. Stroll a couple of blocks and you'll find an unexpected warehouse on open land, home to this museum of street/graffiti art. It's a little explosion of color and life featuring a wide range of international street artists. One exhibition at it's start, followed by rooms of the main collection. Highly recommended.

This is an absolute must of you are in Monteplier - do not miss it - the only problem is that they need more space for all the incredible pieces. Also the one guard & receptionist was the most lovely man!
They also have a very well priced set of original art items in their gift shop.
If you found this helpful please like and follow.
Vincent Bouchard★★★★★
Very interesting museum, though it offers relatively little introductory context, so it may be helpful to read a bit about the collections before your visit.
The museum houses an outstanding collection of Art Brut, with many fascinating and thought-provoking works on display. The richness and quality of the collection alone make it well worth the trip. A private collection (no public subsidy, in France !!), we should support !
A museum not to be missed.
Duygu Pul★★★★★
One of the best art museums i’ve been to. Full of very interesting artwork. Highly recommended!
Victor Reijkersz★★★★★
Really really good. For once the art is actually interesting. Smalll museum but the walls are fully used. More paintings per M2 I ever saw
Suus Redel★★★★★
Incredible selection of art and beautifully curated. Many pieces are on display, which means that some rooms feel a bit busy, but also means that there is art everywhere you go - even in the library and the corridor to the bathrooms. In my opinion, the (current) focus pieces are still displayed in a thoughtful manner and with the attention they deserve. It is fun to see the pieces that weren't chosen for the current main exhibition, that might be in storage and invisible in another museum.

A lovely example of a church being put to new use. The exhibition has been curated in such a way that a reverent, humble atmosphere is maintained and the space remains a place for thought and reflection
Wendy Leung★★★★★
This Gothic church converted to art gallery is fantastic. We saw a free exhibition by Catalan artist, Jaume Plensa 'Miracle'. Amazing huge stainless steel sculptures.
Kari Q.★★★★★
We stumbled upon this art museum, wow! Very surreal exhibit. It was free to enter, not sure how long each exhibit stays for. Definitely worth taking a look 🇨🇦
Monica M★★★★★
Fantastic location for huge, free art installations. The current exhibit about power of silence resonates.
Sin Weng★★★★★
This place was so cool. This gothic church turned art gallery was wonderfully unique. Plus it's free so it is definitely worth a visit. They've preserved a lot of the church structure and the middle is a big open space for all different types of art exhibitions. The one I went to was very cool by L'Artiste JR which included a big beautiful tree in the middle and so many different hand scans hanging from the ceiling and from the branches of the trees as leaves. I would highly recommend coming here if you are visiting the city.

Okayish, not a big deal, at least it's free. Staff is okayish also. There is not so much worthy to see but I guess you can come and pass by and see it in case you have some additional time to spend in Montpellier. It is not an urgent site to visit, so don't worry about it. All in all, a médiocre expérience. But at least, a free experience! So yeah, thank you so much for this experience and hope things will get better!
Véronique Baumbach★★★★☆
This place exudes a quiet, relaxed, stylish, and refreshing ambiance. It’s a bit hidden from the hustle and bustle, making it a perfect spot to unwind. You can dine in the spacious patio or cozy indoor area, with service starting at noon.
Jo Fowler★★★★☆
I’d say this place is worth a visit, it’s free to enter too. The art is very interesting and something different to see. Modern art isn’t always for everyone but if you’re creative definitely check it out!
There is a beautiful terrace courtyard where you can have drinks and food which looks very appealing, but I didn’t sample it.
Maxim Newman★★★★☆
Quite quirky place. There is small art exhibition centre where known artists can show off their work. Whilst we were there we saw works by an American called Popeye. Can't really hope to really explain what he was trying to say but seemed quite deep! There is also a cafe attached as well as an indoor courtyard where you can sit on benches and enjoy the sunshine. Quite close to the centre, you can easily get there in 10 minutes or less from Place de la Comédie.

My favourite space in Montpellier. The food is amazing and fresh. It’s the perfect spot to read or study for a couple of hours. And the museum has really good and interesting artists on display everytime im there.

Interesting experience! It wasn't that bad! I enjoyed it but it felt too short for me, haha. I guess there are things to improve and for sure things will improve. I believe it was a nice experience to see these artistic objects from contemporary art, always nice to reflect on them. Nice staff and quite mangeable to make it through. Also, a nice garden. I recommend it but don't have high expectations! I thank you so much for raison experience!

The current show about horses is a must see. A case with 5 paleolithic decorative horses is a jaw dropper. When is the last time you saw art over 17000 years old? The rest of the exhibit also good. A small walk from the tram. When you arrive at the gate, there is no place to sit if you arrive early. The staff is aware of this but nothing has been done. When it's almost 100 degrees for weeks at a time, this needs to be taken care of.
Kirill Maksimkin★★★★★
Very interesting expositions. I’ve never seen such a perspective over the past of the Occitanie region. I would be glad to come back in summer to see all outdoor activities which are available only in summer.
Andy Wallace★★★★★
Great museum with enthusiastic friendly staff. There was a free tour which was excellent although only in French. I wandered about outside alyhough from other reviews I understand that is not allowed. Oops. The Etruscans Gauls Greeks and Romans all inhabited the town so something for everyone. Entry was free anfd I was presented with a book. The recreation of a Gaul village was good together with examples of brick making. Nice bars an restaurants nearby together with tram stop for easy access. I cycled the bike path from Montpellier.

Went there last summer with my two little nieces and it was a wonderful experience. There were several collections of various objects dealing with Sahara desert: original military attires from all the armies crossing Sahara at different times, scientific and measuring tools, native clothes jewellery and handcraft, artifacts dating back to the stone age, and much more. The owner - a real desert enthusiast - is very welcoming and guided us through the exposition, sharing a lot of interesting details. He was very patient with the little girls and allowed them to move closer to some objets they were particularly interested in. I strongly recommend a visit to this museum: even if privately owned and not very renowned, le MUSEE SAHARIEN is impressive for the variety and the authenticity of its collections.

A small museum? Not at all, this place is actually magnificent. You'll discover real gems, beautiful and sometimes even surprising objects. ⭐️
I'm still wondering how I managed to get in with such a cheap ticket, especially with such an exceptional guided tour. The owner, passionate and deeply committed, shares his knowledge with such mastery that it's almost moving… Honestly, I loved it, absolutely loved it. I hope to have the opportunity to go back; it was simply fantastic.

Bernard's explanations of life in the Sahara were captivating, but it was above all his personal stories that breathed life into these objects and landscapes. When visiting Montpellier visiting this square is a must. Sometimes there is an open theatre performing but always it is bustling with some activity. All the buildings in the surrounding area are majestic.

Place de la Comédie is the lively heart of Montpellier and one of the best places to experience the city's atmosphere. Surrounded by beautiful historic buildings, cafés, shops, and street performers, the square is always full of energy. It's the perfect place to relax, people watch, or simply soak in the local vibe.
The iconic Three Graces Fountain and the beautiful Opéra Comédie make the square especially picturesque. I enjoyed strolling around both during the day and in the evening, when the buildings are beautifully illuminated and the atmosphere becomes even more vibrant.
Whether you're visiting Montpellier for the first time or just passing through, Place de la Comédie is a place you shouldn't miss. It's a wonderful starting point for exploring the city and truly captures the charm of southern France.

Place de la Comédie is the beating heart of Montpellier. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, with the Opéra Comédie and the Three Graces fountain as focal points. Always full of energy, from morning coffee crowds to evening strolls, and well-connected with the city’s tram lines. A perfect place to start exploring the old town or just to sit and people-watch.

Well we arrived in Montpellier on the 26/06/25 first impressions were wow what’s a beautiful place . The buildings within the Place de la Comédie are just stunning the detail in the stone work is incredible. There’s a great vibe about this place . There’s lots of restaurants around the huge square . It’s a must to visit . There’s ample car parking at the underground car parks . This won’t be the last time we visit Montpelier there’s so much more to see .

Dry. In serious need of maintenance.
It might be the time of year, but the whole place was really dry and the plants looked like they were on the brink of death.
The whole garden really looked like it needed a great deal of maintenance, from general grass cutting and weeding, to repairing concrete and fixing broken watering systems.
All in all, unfortunately I would say it’s not really worth the time in Montpellier.

Practical Tips for Visiting Montpellier’s Museums
A little planning goes a long way, especially if you want to visit several museums in a short stay. These tips are based on how the city’s cultural venues actually operate, including seasonal changes and ticketing quirks that often surprise first-time visitors.
1. Check for free first Sundays. Many municipal museums in Montpellier offer free entry on the first Sunday of each month. If your visit aligns, this can save you a significant amount, though expect larger crowds in the morning.
2. Use the City Card if you plan to see three or more museums. The Montpellier City Card often includes entry to major municipal museums plus public transport. Do the math before buying individual tickets, as the break-even point is usually around three paid visits.
3. Remember that many museums close on Mondays. This is common across France, but in Montpellier some smaller or private spaces also close for lunch. Always verify the exact opening hours on the official museum website on the day of your visit.
4. Book ahead for temporary exhibitions. Even if the permanent collection is quiet, a high-profile temporary show at a venue like the Musée Fabre can sell out, especially on weekends. A timed entry slot will save you from waiting in the sun.
5. Pair museums by neighborhood to avoid crisscrossing the city. The historic centre clusters several venues within a 10-minute walk. Start early at the Musée Fabre, then work outward toward smaller house museums and end near the Peyrou or the Jardin des Plantes for a relaxed finish.
6. Don’t skip the museum shops and cafés. Some of the best local design gifts and quiet courtyard seating are found inside these cultural spaces, not on the main shopping streets.
7. Carry a light layer, even in summer. Many collections are housed in historic stone buildings that remain cool and sometimes damp. A cardigan or light jacket will keep you comfortable during longer visits.
Montpellier’s museums are not just indoor attractions for grey days. They are deeply connected to the city’s identity as a university town, a Mediterranean crossroads, and a place that has long valued art, science, and ideas. The best way to experience them is slowly, with room in your schedule for the unexpected detail or quiet courtyard you didn’t plan to find.
Whether you only have time for the Musée Fabre or you spend a week working through smaller private collections, you’ll leave with a clearer sense of why this southern city has attracted thinkers and makers for centuries. And if you return, the museums will still be there—often with something new waiting inside.
