Strasbourg is a city that moves to its own rhythm, where half-timbered houses lean over cobbled lanes and the scent of fresh coffee drifts through medieval archways. For locals and travellers alike, the café is not just a place to grab an espresso; it is a cultural institution, a warm refuge during Alsatian winters, and a sun-drenched terrace in the summer.
Finding the perfect spot, however, requires navigating a mix of tourist-heavy squares and hidden local gems. The best cafés here balance high-quality roasting with an atmosphere that invites you to linger, whether you are people-watching in Petite France or working remotely near the university. The city’s unique Franco-German heritage influences everything, resulting in a coffee scene that values both precision and comfort.
From specialty roasters pushing the boundaries of the third wave to historic institutions that have served patrons for over a century, the diversity is remarkable. You can find velvety flat whites alongside traditional café crème, often paired with a buttery kugelhopf or a flaky croissant. It is a city where the barista knows your order and the water glass is always full.
We have spent countless hours exploring the Quartier des Halles, the Krutenau district, and the quieter residential streets to bring you a curated guide. We evaluated each location based on bean quality, barista expertise, atmosphere, and the overall value of the experience. We looked for places that offer more than just caffeine—spaces that provide a genuine sense of place.
This guide focuses on independent establishments that showcase the best of what Strasbourg has to offer. Whether you are a digital nomad seeking reliable Wi-Fi, a pastry lover hunting for the perfect tart, or simply a tourist needing a rest between the Cathedral and the museums, there is a seat waiting for you.
Below, you will find our definitive selection of the 15 best cafés in Strasbourg. Each entry has been chosen for its unique contribution to the city’s vibrant coffee culture.

This cafe is the real deal! Cafe Bretelles is found in Petit France and offers delicious coffee. The milk and espresso harmonized really well in our cappuccinos. The croissant was also very good. The staff was friendly and attentive. The interior has a minimalist but cozy feel. There is more seating and a bathroom upstairs.
Mahesh Singhal★★★★☆
Nice and warm Cafe located in Petite France, I experienced quick service at the breakfast - Latte M,Granola and croissant were nice. Perhaps, it might be usual but the drink was only warm and while I was expecting it little to grand in size though it turned out to too little.
But surely, it is nice place to start your Strasbourg adventure.

A great stop in Petite France. The flat white was solid, and the lemon cheesecake was incredible – perfect texture and flavor. Cozy place with friendly service.

It’s not easy to get tables but we had luck and we enjoyed every second of it!

A small hidden café in Petite France — such a cozy spot to start the day. Missed breakfast, but we ordered a pain au chocolat and a cheesecake with some really good coffee. The pace here feels totally different from the main street — slow and peaceful. We had such a relaxing time. Highly recommend!

This was a nice cafe with yummy coffee and breakfast! I had eggs Benedict with salmon. It was overall a little salty, but still good. The coffee was tasty too. There was a lot of seating, a second floor too! Nice ambiance.

Wee were unlucky to visit this place at 10:00 Wednesday for brunch. Both the cashier lady and barista were speaking perfect English and were friendly. Unfortunately it took 25 minutes to get our food after the order and our coffee was cold already on serving. The food looked very instagram friendly but the poached eggs on both dishes were overlooked. On top of that, it was smelly upstairs, looks like it lacks on ventilation.
Spoorthi HS★★★★★
I had a great experience at this café! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the food is genuinely delicious, the ingredients are fresh and nicely presented. The staff is friendly and attentive.
One small suggestion is that instead of having customers order at the counter and wait in line, it would be great to have a QR code ordering system or something similar. It would make the process smoother and even more convenient, especially during busy hours.
Overall, it’s a wonderful spot, and I’ll definitely be coming back!
Mr. Vin★★★★☆
The food here is really good, especially the avocado toast and salmon toast — both were delicious and well-made.
The hot matcha was also nice, not overly sweet, which I really liked.
However, the biggest downside was the waiting time. I had to wait a full hour for the food, and by the time it arrived, my hot matcha had already gone cold.

Best place to drink coffee ☕ in town! We had a breakfast at the place, and it was awesome! The ingredients are from locals (and Bio 💚), but still the prices are completely affordable (two people breakfast with dirty Chai latte and Moccacinno for around 20€). The staff was incredibly friendly and extremely kind! Alone for such a service, it was already worth the visit. Now top if with great coffee ☕ and you get the best place in town! 💯 a recommendation

The atmosphere here was so welcoming! The owner has an incredible ability of making the conversation with every customer so natural that you feel both taken care of and not obliged to talk more than you want and that’s very important :))
The coffe and ginger beer (local!) was very good and the vibe of the place is great. I would like to have a place like this in my city ❤️

The coffee here is AMAZING!!!! I've been travelling Europe for 2 months now and have not had a coffee as good as this since I left Australia. I ended up coming back twice and even ordering another coffee for take-away because I loved it so much. The staff are so lovely and welcoming as well, we had a great chat and I left in a great mood. my visit here really made my day, thank you 😊

A lovely stop for some iced-chocolate 🙂 the owner is super friendly. I enjoyed my short stop there.

This was our first morning in Strasbourg, and we were welcomed with kindness by a gentleman.
We chose to sit indoors to savor our cappuccinos. They prepared a unique lavender honey cappuccino for me, which was absolutely delightful; I was wishing for more. I am very grateful to the barista for fulfilling such an uncommon request (more so very unusual combo).
I highly recommend this cozy coffee shop to anyone visiting. Merci!

Unfortunately, the coffee was not very good. We ordered two cappuccinos to go and had to wait quite a while to receive them. When we finally got them, they had cinnamon on top, and the employee had already stirred them with a wooden stick.
I wasn't aware that a cappuccino traditionally includes cinnamon, and to be honest, it made it taste more like a Chai Latte than coffee. If the employee had asked us beforehand, we would have declined the cinnamon. Unfortunately, I wasn't even able to drink mine because the taste was so disappointing.

Came here 3 mornings in a row for lattes. This morning It’s also right next to the best bakery around. Buy the bakery next door but do get the coffee here. Service is super friendly and very casual. Saad and Gaston made sure our coffee was made fresh. The way it should be. On a cold day indoor seatings are warm and cozy. But we preferred outside to get the fresh air.
Sarah Eilers★★★★★
I stopped by in the afternoon shortly before closing time and had a really lovely experience.
The cozy atmosphere welcomes you the moment you walk in, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee immediately hits you and creates a warm, inviting feeling. There are comfortable seating options, including sofas, which make it easy to settle in and relax.
I ordered a latte, and the staff were exceptionally friendly. They even offered to let me bring in food from the bakery next door, which I thought was a very kind gesture. I spent some time reading my book, and the ambiance was perfect for it: pleasant, quiet, with soft music playing in the background. You can really tell that quality matters here.
As closing time approached, the café became a little livelier, but I was never rushed and was left to enjoy my coffee at my own pace. The combination of friendliness, relaxation, and comfort made this a wonderful place to unwind.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a peaceful spot to slow down and enjoy a good coffee. Thank you for the hospitality! ☕📖✨

Fantastic coffee and even better ppl. We were offered a glass of water without asking and watching my 6 year old Batista showed me a way to bathroom without even expecting us to order anything. So kind ❤️

I ordered a Freddo Espresso for take away today and this is what I got. I pretty sure this is not what a Freddo Espresso looks like. I double asked and they told me this is right. Two days ago that I ordered the same inside the store, it was double though

The chocolate éclair was out of this world, and the smoked salmon, spinach, and cheese croissant was incredible. There’s limited seating, but both days we went, we managed to find a spot inside pretty quickly. We also tried the coffee éclair - it was great quality, though the chocolate one was definitely our favorite. The raspberry cupcake was just okay compared to everything else. They also have a cold, sugar-free hibiscus tea, which was really nice.

Very very popular and famous bakery for locals and tourists.
There is always a long queue.
Good organic breads ans cakes.
It is a bit sad that we cannot buy half baguette as we always do in France.
There is a very small space for eat in. So recommend to buy for takeaway.
Jessie W★★★★☆
Love this bakery. All the sweet and savoury goods are incredible and baked fresh. It’s hard to choose what to eat honestly. Also right in the centre on the pedestrian street, which makes it a great place to chill and people watch. I wish their coffee was better though as I was disappointed by it. It’s also machine coffee.

L'Atelier 116
They have different locations for this boulangerie. The selection of pastry that they have is amazing most especially the strawberry tart, it is so fresh and one of my favorites. There's a queue but it moves quickly.
The drinks are mid for me but the taste is subjective. I had Iced Mocha for drink.
You can also have an option to dine outside the street overlooking the city views of Strasbourg.
Parag Shinde★★★★★
If you do not have any particular choice, just have anything from L`atelier, and you will not be disappointed. Unfortunately there are only 3 chairs to sit inside, and 4 tables outside, so be prepared to carry away your food. There is almost always a line to enter, but it moves fast due to the super efficient service by the staff inside.

Great coffee, super tasty and very well prepared. The best I had in Strasbourg. Also the cakes are like homemade and very interesting recipes, nothing similar to what I’ve tried before.
Anastasia Sendroiu★★★★★
It was a very nice experience!! The cakes there were absolutely delicious (pistache framboise , myrtille et citron) and the espresso was very good:) The cakes had the most divine texture I've ever had, they were extremely flavorful and the cream on top was amazing. I loved it very much.

Excellent coffee, equally delicious desserts, and staff who are always attentive. A big thank you to the staff for their help with the pronunciation of certain words. Since we aren’t French, the support of the locals in helping us converse and practice French was very important to us, and the staff helped us every time with great understanding. It’s a wonderful place to sit quietly and enjoy a coffee while admiring the city.
Jessica Bello Salguero★★☆☆☆
I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn’t for the grumpy service of the two women on Dec 6th in the afternoon. Firstly we ordered 2 coffees and a cookie and they made the latte with oat instead of cow milk. When we told them they said it was not oat milk and when we insisted they try it they accepted to make a new one which was far creamier (like a cow milk latte would be). We understand Xmas is busy and stressful but if the clients are kind and smiley it should not be difficult that the staff is kind back. Disappointing as it has the elements to be a very good cafe

Charming café with good coffee — but skip the matcha 😕
We visited Nomad Café in the centre of Strasbourg for a break during our walk through the city. It’s a small, nicely designed café with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were friendly at first, and my Flat White was well made — smooth and enjoyable.
However, I would strongly advise against ordering the matcha drinks here. I tried a matcha latte, but it was mostly milk and tasted like nothing but milk (see photo). When I politely mentioned this to the staff, the response was less warm than before. The server came back with a spray bottle containing a pre-mixed matcha solution and added a bit more while I held the glass. Unfortunately, this didn’t help at all, and the drink remained disappointing.
If you’re looking for a good coffee in Strasbourg city centre, this café can be a pleasant stop — just avoid the matcha options.
Cou Cou★★★★★
I am always looking for the best iced latte , iced coffee…
This is one of the best iced coffee in Strasbourg.
They shake the coffee with ice before serving so that we can have a very cold good iced latte.
Their pink latte (cherry blossom) is also very tasty with ginger. Nice pink colour and good taste.
That always crate new drinks. A bit of fun and creativity that we cannot find other places.
If you do not want to too much sun shine ,this is the cool place to stay outside.
Inside is pretty small but cosy and nice place to stay.
There are also nice pastries.
Abdulrahman Alajati★★★★★
I’m so happy I stumbled upon this charming little café! The coffee was excellent, and they even had some delicious gluten-free cakes. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend this spot to anyone — a true hidden gem!🇫🇷☕️

Amazing food!
Highlights: soft baguette, great salad dressing, really good coffee!
Lauren Wougk★★★★☆
We got the petite stub and the sweet stub with a strawberry matcha latte. The prices are very fair. We enjoyed the baguette and granola but the matcha tasted watery and did not have much flavor.
Petre Valeanu★★☆☆☆
The coffee was good, but I just had the most pathetic breakfast of my life. I could've literally done the same at home for €3, nothing special. You guys really need to step it up a bit. There's nothing about 2 eggs, butter and a piece of bread worth spending €16 for. If you just want a coffee it's an alright coffee to-go place, but it you want to eat something good just go to one of the sunny terraces on the boats across the steet.
BradinHK★★★★☆
We recently stayed in Strasbourg for a few nights and enjoyed an early morning stop at Coffee Stub along Quai des Pêcheurs. They have a small indoor seating area. You can do take-away as well. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm (weekdays) and 9am to 6pm (weekends). Menu features a selection of simple breakfast orders, desserts, coffees and non-coffee drinks.
During our visit we were served a good carrot cake and vegan granola. Americano and Espresso Macchiato were both pretty good as well. Service very friendly, prices reasonable, and overall good vibes in this coffee shop. Would gladly stop here again during future visits to Strasbourg.

Such a hidden gem in Strasbourg!
Les Compotes feels like a warm hug. The coffee is excellent, and their homemade sweet treats are simply delicious. What really makes this place special, though, is the incredibly kind staff and the cozy, relaxing vibe. It’s the perfect spot to read a book, do a bit of work, or just catch up with a friend. I felt right at home and I will definitely be back!

This is a cage and Co working place for everyone.
There are different type of spaces for work.
Good place to work.
Nice atmosphere. I came from the centre so it was a bit far… so that if you want to be in somewhere quiète, it is good to be.
It is not touristic place at all.
Good place for locals to work.
Cody Reinbolt★★★★★
A great neighborhood cafe with a fantastic atmosphere. There’s always an interesting event going on and they support talented local artists to present and sell their work. Come here if you just want to chill with a well brewed coffee and get some work done. My favorite in Strasbourg.
S Z★★★★☆
Very comfortable coffee shop to spend time in. The coffee is also very tasty, though a bit more expensive than average. One thing is that the coffee they brew for you in store is not available for purchase as roasted beans. Instead they have roasted beans that they don't offer as a brewed cup in store. Therefore, if you like the coffee you drank, you can't buy the beans from them. Also, it almost gives a sense that the roasted beans they do sell aren't even good enough to serve in the store.

The Cappuchino is delicious, the cookie melted in my mouth and the choclate on the cookie is premium Choc, it was my first time in Strasbourg and i would Recommend this little Barrista Cafe to everyone who is nearly here, and also the Sweet Barista was very Friendly and Cute.

We stopped by Café Potager for coffee and cake, and it was a nice little break. The desserts were delicious, the coffee was good, and the atmosphere was cozy.
The only downside was the service. We waited quite a while before being served, and everything felt a bit slow. The café was busy, so that may have played a part, but a quicker service would have made the experience much better.
Overall, it’s still a nice place to stop for coffee and something sweet, and I’d come back to give it another try.

What a great place to have specialty coffee.
For those who are looking for drip coffee such as (V60) or the tools of making the drip coffee, Omnino is your destination in Strasbourg.
I have been served V60 of the Ethiopian beans and it was really great.
Omnino is not only a coffee shop, they are a local coffee roastery as well.

I enjoyed this little coffee spot a lot! The barista helped me choose the variety of beans for espresso (two origins were available at that time, Rwanda and Columbia, he explained the flavour palette and I chose the one from Rwanda - it was amazing...). The place was really cozy, with lovely little tea cups and the service was 10/10. The sweets they offered were diverse and delicious. I highly recommend this place :>

I love when a café is tucked in a quiet alley away from the bustle. A classic European cafe with a bench to enjoy your coffee, slow down, and soak the sun for a moment... The cups are beautiful just as everyone says, I felt like a king drinking my espresso from a cup with a gold rim. The coffee was delicious and balanced, flat white was well prepared. An excellent coffee shop!

We had a wonderful experience at Au Fond du Jardin and our visit to this magical tea room was a highlight to our time in Strasbourg. The owner's passion for his venue and creations comes through clearly, even though it is all spoken in French and we only speak English :). From the moment you walk into the shop, you feel welcomed and special. There were only 5 tables available, so if you want to have your moment in the tea room, you should make your reservation early. We were giddy when we were moved from the wait list to a confirmed reservation.
The Madeline cakes are works of art, and each comes with an inspiration origin story, as do each of the tea blends. The atmosphere is enchanting, but as mentioned above, it's the owner who gives the space life.
It was a joyful experience and if we are ever blessed to be back in Strasbourg, we will definitely try and make reservations again. Thank you for a wonderful time!

To step into Au Fond du Jardin is to fall down a velvet-lined rabbit hole, where the ordinary dissolves and wonder takes its rightful place.
Nothing here is merely made: everything is conjured. Each pastry is a jewel, nestled in its delicate case like a secret waiting to be unveiled. You hesitate before tasting, not out of doubt, but reverence. The craftsmanship is almost sacred, precise, passionate, obsessive in the most beautiful way. Even the paper carries a whisper of perfume, as though the experience insists on lingering just a little longer, clinging softly to your senses.
The décor drifts somewhere between rococo fantasy and dreamscape, gilded curves, intricate details, a theatrical elegance that feels both decadent and intimate. You half expect time to stop, or a clock to melt, or a hidden door to open if you dare to look closely enough.
And then, there is the feeling. That rare, fleeting sensation that you’ve discovered something precious, almost secret. A place where passion is visible, tangible, alive in every corner.
Au Fond du Jardin is not a pâtisserie.
It is a spell.

Simply one of my favorite place in Strasbourg. The owner is always there explaining the story behind the Madeleines, the ingrédients, how it was done, etc. If you want to access the restaurant/tea room, make sure to book in advance, they're most of time full.

Very nice, beautiful and detailed decorations throughout in the seating area, boutique, as well as the exterior areas! Madeleines were very tasty, not too sweet, and some had unique flavours too like the English tea one! Tea was very good with great subtle notes, and many options are available too!

A very nice and cosy caffee shop with a great selection of drinks and experienced baristas. It is a perfect place for small calm friend gatherings and evening working or reading.
I would love to be able to come here during weekends and work, but unfortunately laptops are not allowed Saturday and Sunday.

I had the pleasure of visiting this lovely spot while I was in Strasbourg.
I was looking for a good breakfast place, and I landed on a great coffee place.
Greeted by the friendly staff, and the energetic vibes from the cosy place, I was just amazed.
I ordered a flat white and a croissant.
The flat white was strong, and satisfying my inner coffee nerd. The croissant was fluffy and tasty.
This is an amazing coffee place, I highly recommend it to any visitor to Strasbourg.
You will get a coffee that‘s far better than what you find in an average French cafeteria.

Visited twice for breakfast.
While the bread did not seem fresh, combined with the coffee, it wasn’t so bad.
The location is super tiny and while I understand they’re going for the cozy ambience, it feels like you’re breathing into each other.
The attendants were pleasant as well so good experience overall.

My favourite café of all time!
The first time, I ordered an egg coffee and the lady told me how to drink it.
I sometimes stop for the new pandan drink: pandan cloud. Very delicate and creamy drink with a nice pandan flavor 😍 ty! Might be the first pandan drink in strasbourg (tea doesn’t count) I’m so grateful 🥹.
Ty for making me experience this deliciousness, I’m vegan now and probably can’t have it anymore :,) but everyone else GO TRY IT!!!

The cafe was small but big enough to enjoy sitting there. It had many options for traditional Vietnamese coffee. We tried their signature egg coffee, and it was really delicious. The coffee cake also had a great balance between sweet and bitter notes. All in all, we enjoyed the food and the vibe there.

The coffee is very decent. A bit pricey than others but location is strategic. Loved it

The lady working there was extremely nice, the coffee was good, we could sat peacefully and talk, also the toilet was clean. Highly recommend.
The prices for the Vietnamese coffee were a bit too high.
Tips for Enjoying the Café Culture in Strasbourg
To truly appreciate the coffee scene in Strasbourg, it helps to understand the local etiquette and rhythms. The city operates on a blend of French leisure and German efficiency, which means the café experience can differ slightly from other major European capitals. Here is how to make the most of your visit.
1. Understand the "Café" Terminology
In France, ordering a "café" will get you a short, strong espresso. If you prefer a longer drink similar to an Americano, ask for a "café allongé." For milk-based drinks, a "café crème" is the traditional French equivalent of a latte, though many specialty shops now use Italian terms like cappuccino and flat white. Do not expect a large mug of drip coffee unless the menu explicitly states "filter coffee."
2. Respect the Terrace vs. Counter Pricing
Like much of France, many traditional cafés in Strasbourg charge different prices depending on where you sit. Drinking your espresso standing at the bar (au comptoir) is the cheapest option, while sitting inside (en salle) costs a bit more. The most expensive option is sitting on the terrace (en terrasse), where you are paying for the view and the prime people-watching location.
3. Timing is Everything for Food
While cafés are open all day, the kitchen often operates on strict hours. If you want a full lunch or a hot dish, aim to arrive between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. After this window, many cafés switch to a "snacking" menu that consists mainly of pastries, quiches, or cold sandwiches. Dinner is rarely served in a café setting; for evening meals, you will want to transition to a traditional restaurant or a winstub.
4. Sunday and Monday Closures
Strasbourg has a strong tradition of respecting the day of rest. While the tourist-heavy areas around the Cathedral remain open, many of the best independent specialty cafés in the Krutenau or Neudorf districts close entirely on Sundays or Mondays. Always check the social media pages of a specialty café before making a special trip, as hours can vary significantly with the seasons.
5. Embrace the "No Laptop" Zones
While Strasbourg is a university city with many students, not every café welcomes remote workers. Many traditional or small specialty shops value conversation and atmosphere over screen time. Look for signs indicating "No Wi-Fi" or restrictions on laptops during peak hours. If you need to work for several hours, seek out larger spaces or explicitly laptop-friendly venues, usually found near the university campus.
6. Pair Coffee with a Local Treat
Drinking coffee in Strasbourg is an opportunity to engage with Alsatian baking. Skip the generic muffin and ask for a local specialty. A slice of kugelhopf, a cinnamon-infused streusel, or a tart topped with seasonal mirabelle plums will elevate your coffee break. Many specialty cafés source their pastries from local artisan bakers, making the pairing a true taste of the region.
The café scene in Strasbourg is a reflection of the city itself: warm, resilient, and deeply rooted in tradition while still open to modern innovation. Whether you are huddled in a wood-paneled room watching the rain fall on the Ill River or sipping a single-origin pour-over in a minimalist space, the experience is about slowing down. It is about taking the time to savor not just the coffee, but the moment.
As you wander from the towering spire of the Cathedral to the quiet banks of the canals, let this guide lead you to the places where the locals actually go. Pull up a chair, order something warm, and settle in—you are in one of Europe’s most enchanting cities, and there is no better way to experience it than from behind a perfectly crafted cup of coffee.
