15 Best Bars in Arles

Sipping a pastis in Arles is rarely just about the drink; it is about the atmosphere, the light, and the weight of history pressing against the ancient stone walls. Unlike the sprawling metropolitan scenes of Paris or Lyon, the bar culture here is intimately tied to the rhythms of Provence. Whether you are recovering from a morning exploring the Roman Amphitheatre or seeking a shaded terrace after tracing Van Gogh’s footsteps, the right establishment transforms a simple refreshment into a sensory memory. From sun-drenched plazas to moody, wood-paneled caves, Arles offers a diverse spectrum of venues that cater to wine connoisseurs, cocktail enthusiasts, and casual beer drinkers alike.

The local drinking scene is heavily influenced by the region’s geography. Being situated at the gateway to the Camargue and surrounded by the vineyards of the Vallée des Baux-de-Provence means the wine lists here are exceptionally strong. You will find a heavy emphasis on local rosés, robust reds, and the distinct minerality of white wines produced just a few kilometers away. However, the modern influence of the LUMA Foundation and the annual Rencontres d’Arles photography festival has injected a contemporary edge into the city’s hospitality, bringing natural wines, craft beers, and artisanal cocktails into the spotlight.

Understanding the rhythm of Arles is key to enjoying its bars. The French concept of l’apéro is sacred here; the hours between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM are the golden time when locals spill out onto the terraces. It is a time for socializing, debating, and watching the golden Provençal sunlight fade against the limestone facades. If you arrive too early, you might find a venue quiet and preparing for service; arrive too late without a reservation, and you might struggle to find a chair on the most popular patios.

Navigating the narrow, winding streets of the old town can be disorienting, but that is part of the charm. The best bars are often tucked away in squares you stumble upon by accident, away from the main tourist thoroughfares. You might walk through a nondescript door to find a lush hidden courtyard, or climb a flight of stairs to a rooftop with a view of the Rhône. This guide is designed to help you cut through the guesswork and find the spots that offer the best quality drinks, the most welcoming service, and the most authentic local ambiance.

The criteria for this selection go beyond just the liquid in the glass. We have considered the quality of the food pairings, the knowledge of the staff, the comfort of the seating, and the unique character that sets a venue apart from the rest. Whether you are looking for a place to read a book with a coffee that transitions into a vermouth, or a lively spot to meet new people until midnight, this list provides a comprehensive overview of the city’s finest watering holes.

Below is the curated list of the 15 best bars in Arles, selected for their distinct personalities and their commitment to the art of French hospitality.

I was denied a drink just be cause I returned a left over pint of Guinness wanted to be charged as original Guinness, I strongly doubt the owner is either Irish or someone that knows something about Guinness , just the only establishment in small town and no complaints allowed
Karlos McGrath★★★★☆
Went to this pub both nights we were in Arles. Definitely the best spot in town by a long way. Seems very popular with the locals even in the low season. The good was very good, as was the Guinness. They also have a proper selection of quality Belgian beers (including Corsendonk!!). The blond bartender who is originally from Champagne was great (sorry, didn't get her name). The rest of the staff were just okay. Not a great place for watching sports, but otherwise a very good pub. We stayed nearby as the bus to and from La Camargue stops outside the door. We'll do the same next time and spend our evenings in Paddy Mullins again!
Bob Mac★☆☆☆☆
The person behind the bar today should find another career. She was charmless to the point of rudeness and certainly not the personality for an Irish themed bar. Didn't stay for drinks or food. 3rd day in charming Arles and everyone else has been wonderful.
Kim Oborn★★☆☆☆
Just had the worst meal I think I’ve ever attempted to eat anywhere. Hadn’t eaten all day and while there were better options in the vicinity, nothing else opened until 7pm. I’ve eaten a a number of Irish pubs in several countries and the food here is by far the worst. Ordered fish n chips and chicken n chips and they were both inedible. Chicken and fish were not fresh and the chips had been dunked into oil that was clearly not hot enough. Finished our drinks and left the meals pretty much untouched. My advice would be to not eat here. Go to the supermarket next door and buy a sandwich or some fruit.
Dominic Herald★☆☆☆☆
Dirty tables expensive 🍺 beer chipped glasses. Won't be rushing back.

Great bar / pub for craft beer with a wide range of beers. Currently 4 IPAs, a standard (but highly recommended) lager, a wit plus some more exotic ones such as a sour Brett. Nice barkeeper, great music and live bands. Highly recommended for Arles
Steve★★★★★
Aussie Travellers. Not many people here (we’re old and out early in the evening!) but this place still has atmosphere. Enjoying the music - Pink Floyd, in this case. Locally brewed craft beer from Cap Marca Arles - in my case an excellent NEIPA with plenty of citrus flavour on this exceptionally hot day. Awesome! And the bar tender speaks Anglais! Will hopefully get back here before our trip to this awesome French town is over.
Holly Ceplikas★★★★★
Fun craft beer bar in Arles! The bartender was super knowledgeable and generous in letting us try so many beers. He answered our many questions about the beers and local breweries. Super cool decor with a lot of character. If you enjoy beer, definitely stop by for a drink (or more!).
David Taylor★★★★★
Live music hub for blues and rock. Friday evening jam or concert performances from 19:00. Amazing vibe.
Debbie P★★★★★
What a great little find. This bar serves a good variety of craft beers on tap from Cap Marca Brewery. Excellent beers. On all three of our visits the brewer was on site so great to chat with him about his beers. Other varieties of beer also available. Staff at the bar are fabulous. Happy to chat to us Aussies in English which is very hard to find in bars in Arles. Atmosphere is relaxed, bar has a terrace at the back for those who like to sit outdoors and they even have live music on some nights. If you're an Aussie in Arles, go check this one out! You won't be disappointed.

Very quick and efficient, but the toilet had a really disgusting smell!!
Stefano Dastoli★★☆☆☆
Rude waiters, we asked for a glass of water with the coffee and they brought us a little shot glass.. You can feel it's a place just for tourists. To avoid.
Michael Parsons★☆☆☆☆
€2.50 for 1 scoop of ice cream and one was past it's sell by date. It was disgusting. All 3 of us tasted it and it was definitely off. When I complained they refused to accept it. I am not sure if this was just Gallic indifference or pure ripping off tourists. By the way i do speak french and did not rant at the barman even though my disabled daughter was upset by not getting an ice cream. I hope this puts enough people. It is a shame because the rest of Arles is fantastic and well worth a visit.

There is no big signage outside, so this is the nice hideout for the locals, you feel like you are special visiting this fantastic bar. You can order cocktails or beers on tap. There is a little courtyard too where you can hangout if you are a smoker. I love this secret bar.

I had a wonderful evening at Le Cube bar. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. The paella was simply delicious, generous, and perfectly cooked. What's more, I was lucky enough to enjoy a gypsy concert taking place in the bar's square, which made the experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend this place for a festive and delicious time!

Take the plat du jour. Always fresh and cheaper than the set menu. They certainly know how to cook and how to season the food. No problem with the QR code payment option: very easy to use and saves everyone's time.

Amazing food after tiring day. The Buns Roll Gambas Cajun (prawns) for sharing...were really hard to share!! We loved it so much (including my wife) and happy to compare it to a Michelin star food.. both visual and taste. Coming tomorrow before we leave france again! Service very friendly and thoughtful. Well done
Yuchuan Liu★☆☆☆☆
You order a gin and tonic, and they serve it in a tiny glass with barely two sips in it. The €5.50 strawberry milkshake looked more like vomit than a milkshake. Maybe it was just one particular staff member—a man with dark curly hair and glasses. He handled our drinks and gave us these disappointing servings. When we pointed out that another table had a normal-sized gin and tonic, he suddenly replaced ours with a proper one. That makes it hard not to feel like we were being taken advantage of. Very disappointing experience.
Ross M.★★★★☆
A nice restaurant, in a very frequented « piazza » so it was very noisy. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The service was quick. The food was good but not as we were used to. My rice was a little « glued » together and the tartare lacked a bit of flavor. The French fries were really good and please take a expresso because it’s really good.
Georgia Healey★★★★★
We had a great (humongous) lunch here and it was fantastic! The service was great and so was the atmosphere. We had the Parma pizza, octopus salad and beef burger, all dishes were equally delicious 🤤

We were staying nearby so this was our local! What a find a wide selection of beers made with locally grown ingredient's. We are looking forward to a tasting session later. Friendly and informative owner & brewer with his dog😊🐕

A very beautiful and serene brewery amongst the Camargue’s amazing countryside! I strongly recommend checking out this spot and picking up a dew local beers. The brewer Geoffrey is a passionate beer brewer and advocate for local artisinally made goods that promote the region’s abundant richness!Great for events or a quick pit spot to get the best beer in the area!
Maryhills Localguide★★★★★
Good boi and good beer
Emilie Sauret★★★★★
Geoffrey's beers are a real treat! And that's the right word, because most of them are truly decadent! The range is extensive, there are often new brews, and the recipes are always subtle. You'll discover some real gems like the Stoutella, the rice beers (I love the Biou Noir, with its spicy and dark chocolate notes…), and one whose name I've forgotten, with a hint of salt! I highly recommend a visit to the brewery; it's well worth the trip.
Paul-Alban Maury★★★★★
I've used Cap Marca several times to provide a beer tap for my events. The beer is always excellent. Cap Marca means you can enjoy draft beer without the pressure 🤣

After 10 min wait to be served and total ignorance of the staff even for ordering of the drinks, food was not available. Pleas white more people for the opening week cause serving is the key for the bar or resto.

Very ordinary service, not impressed. Not usual French service levels. It was unclear if it was table service and no mention of food offering. The staff were too busy socialising and drinking with their friends to make the space work.

Some of the best food I have ever had. Very limited menu, but absolutely phenomenal. Waiter spoke some English, which was helpful, but not necessary, as everything was perfect as it was. I had the Gnocchi and it was perfection

Very “sympa” and fast service. It was maybe 3min after we ordered that the food (which was delicious and homemade) arrived. Good prices (we paid around 20€ each for a main meal, a glass of rose and dessert) and waiters with big smiles on their faces.

Slow service, not much choice, warm sandwich was cold in the middle, roast potatoes were very oily. It was not terrible but wouldn't recommend

Was O.K.... went on a very hot day and the smell of the nearby drain/sewer was disgusting and we almost left. Does nice Hoegaarden beers. Food was average and service a bit slow.

Had a fantastic dining experience here! Sat at the bar and chatted with Adrian, the owner and bartender (star-tender, as I called him 🌟). What an interesting and personable guy. BIG nod to the chef - she’s so talented at combining flavors! Her homemade cheesecake infused with herbs and citrus was the perfect way to end the meal. Warm, fun environment - chill, but upbeat. The energy in there feels really good. Go check it out and support Adrian and his partner! You’ll be glad you did 😊

We had a lovely meal at this bar something a little different for the evening. The cocktails were very good and most of all a great atmosphere and we spoke to the bar man who is one of the owners. Well worth a visit if you are in Arles.

I accidentally left my water bottle in the alley outside the restaurant. One of the staff, Victor, had saved it so I was able to get it back. Thus we decided to eat here and I’m glad we did 🙂 Cozy little spot with incredibly friendly staff, delicious food, and spot-on cocktails. Highly recommend!

This establishment truly deserves nothing less than 5 stars. Adrienne and his whole crew were wonderful, kind, and enjoyable. The food was absolutely delicious. From entree to desert, it was all fantastic. Compliments to the chef. The space is warm and has tasteful ambient lighting. Great for a lively date or small group to attend. Great place to have fun and spend a lovely evening. Blind test, karaoke, the evening was really great! The young woman who greeted us and looked after us was very pleasant, smiling, and very professional. One small drawback: I found the sharing platters a bit pricey for the quantity! However, the food was very good and of very high quality. We would have liked just a little more 🤗 The restrooms were very clean. Thank you for the warm welcome and the wonderful, lively evening. We will be back!

I absolutely loved this new concept in games and socializing in Arles! As for food, the menu is simple and effective at very affordable prices. As for games, you're spoiled for choice—there are over 50—and you can really feel the passion in every activity and detail. Whether it's for an evening out, a meal with friends, family, or even colleagues, don't hesitate, you'll love it! A big thank you to the team for their professionalism and friendliness! I'll definitely be back.

A friendly and cheerful place! Whether you're there for a drink, a snack with friends, or to participate in the activities (tournaments, karaoke, games…), you're always guaranteed a great time. The atmosphere is relaxed, the welcome is warm, and you can really feel the passion behind this project. A wonderful place that you absolutely must discover.
Patricia Patoux★★★☆☆
Great place but service needs improvement as serving platters while playing makes everything cold, otherwise nice.

Tips for Enjoying the Bar Scene in Arles

To truly drink like a local, it helps to understand the unspoken rules and preferences of the region. The pace of life here is slower, and the appreciation for a drink is tied to the quality of the moment rather than the speed of the service. By adjusting your expectations and embracing the local customs, you will find that your evenings in Arles become significantly more rewarding and authentic.

Embrace the Local Wines: While ordering a generic "house red" is acceptable, you are doing yourself a disservice in a region so rich in viticulture. Ask for a glass of a local IGP Alpilles or a Costières de Nîmes. If you prefer rosé, order it by the glass or pichet (carafe) like the locals do, rather than a bottle, to keep it perfectly chilled in the summer heat.

Plan for the "Coupure" (Closing Time): Many traditional bars in Arles close between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM. If you want a mid-afternoon drink, head to a café or a brasserie rather than a dedicated cocktail bar. The city effectively shuts down for a few hours before the evening shift begins, so plan your walking routes accordingly.

Check for Seasonal Hours: Arles is a city of festivals, from the Feria in April and September to the photography festival in summer. During these events, bars extend their hours, open terraces that are usually closed, and are much busier. Conversely, in the deep winter (January and February), some smaller venues may close for annual holidays. Always check social media or make a quick call if you have your heart set on a specific spot.

Food is Part of the Experience: Drinking in France is rarely done on an empty stomach. While some bars offer full menus, others specialize in planches (boards of charcuterie and cheese) or simple tapas. Ordering a small snack not only enhances the flavor of your wine but also keeps you energized for a long evening of exploring.

Carry Cash for Small Purchases: While most established bars in Arles accept credit cards, many have a minimum spend (often 10 to 15 euros) for card transactions. If you are just stopping in for a quick espresso or a single glass of wine, having a few euro coins or a small bill will make the transaction smoother and faster.

Respect the Space: Many of these bars are located in historic buildings with residential neighbors upstairs. While the atmosphere can get lively, especially during the Feria, being mindful of noise levels when leaving a venue late at night is a sign of respect that locals greatly appreciate.

The magic of Arles is that the line between a bar, a café, and a restaurant is often beautifully blurred. You might arrive at 5:00 PM for a coffee and find yourself still there at 9:00 PM, having transitioned seamlessly to a cocktail and a cheese board. This fluidity is the essence of the Provençal lifestyle; there is no rush to leave, and the table is yours for as long as you wish to enjoy it.

As the sun sets and the stone walls of the city radiate the heat of the day, finding the right bar becomes less about the alcohol and more about the perspective. It is about watching the world slow down, listening to the clink of glasses, and understanding why artists and writers have been drawn to this city for centuries.
