15 Best Bakeries in Nantes

Nantes may be famous for its mechanical elephant and the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, but its true cultural heartbeat lies in the humble boulangerie. The city has quietly become one of France’s most exciting destinations for artisan bread and pastry. Here, the lines between bakery and patisserie blur beautifully, resulting in storefronts that smell of caramelized butter and toasted flour.

Understanding the local scene requires knowing the difference between a boulangerie and a pâtisserie. While both sell bread and sweets, the best addresses in Nantes master both disciplines under one roof. These artisans often work directly with local millers and organic farmers from the Loire-Atlantique region. The result is a distinct, slightly rustic flavor profile unique to western France.

The resurgence of sourdough and long fermentation has transformed the city’s carb culture. You will find traditional baguettes sitting next to Japanese milk bread and Scandinavian rye loaves. This fusion of tradition and innovation makes the Nantes bakery scene incredibly exciting for both locals and visitors.

Choosing where to buy your morning croissant can be overwhelming with so many options scattered across the city center and the vibrant Bouffay district. From historic institutions that have operated for decades to trendy new wave bakers experimenting with ancient grains, there is a flavor for every palate. This guide focuses on quality of ingredients, technical skill, and consistency.

We have walked the cobblestone streets, interviewed bakers, and tasted the crumb structure of countless loaves to bring you this list. Whether you are looking for a flaky pain au chocolat to eat by the Loire or a dense, nutrient-rich miche to take home, you will find your match here.

Below, we explore the must-visit addresses that define the city’s baking identity. You will find everything from organic cooperatives to high-end pastry boutiques, ensuring you never have to settle for a mediocre bite in Nantes.

Beautiful little bakery with a large variety of reasonably priced goods. Not much of a wait time or queue. Must try the tarts: strawberry, lemon and of other fruits, as well as coffee flavoured items. Friendly staff that serve quickly as well.
Stan Blakemore★★★★★
La Petite Boulangerie has friendly staff, great breads and pastries. The croissants are awesome and the lemon cakes are the best I have ever tasted.

We're told we had picked the best Boulangerie in Nantes. What a wonderful selection, taste and quality. Had to go their every day for the pain au raisin - the best I have ever tasted, croissant and baguette.

Beautiful store with heartfelt service. There's lots to choose from, but this review can only focus on what I had. The croissant was perfectly proofed and baked. The chausee au pommes is an item i know well, and theirs has a party trick. The caramelisation of one side provides a comforting crisp layer that isnt too sweet, and is a little chewy. The flipside isn't great, and neither is the centre. The soft side has lost its Danish pastry qualities, and the centre is almost completely lacking apple. This item is all about balance, and this example lacked it. I would return ifni had more time.

Favourite boulangerie from my visit to Nantes, the croissants were amazing, so buttery, flaky and delicious! Sadly they’re closed on Saturday and Sunday which was a real shame. Super friendly service, supportive of my poor attempt at trying out some French too. Would highly recommend!

I spent a month in Nantes, and one of the things I was most excited about was going down early in the morning to buy wholewheat bread. The shop is so tempting that you want to buy everything in it, from bread to pastries to ready meals. The service is also very attentive and helpful, even if you don't speak French. On top of all this, they use organic flour, resulting in an extraordinary product and experience. I have been delighted to spent time buying there these past few weeks.

During my stay for 2 weeks as a visiting researcher in Nantes (I am staying in the House of The Foreign Researcher), I go here and ALWAYS returning every morning (except for the weekend). Their croissant, pain du chocolat, focaccia, their paprika and emmenthal bread and their baguette, are superb. Their chicken sandwich is also so delicious. This boulangerie, will always have a place in my heart and I wish to have it more when I visit Nantes in the future
Isaias Fidalgo★★★★★
My 1st time at this boulangerie and I loved it. Apart from the many delicious freshly baked cakes and bread, the staff are friendly and do speak very well English. I was allowed to take pics, ones shown on here. Definitely, a place to visit again.

Amazing place with great variety! Decided to try a new bakery this morning and was absolutely blown away by the quality of the baked goods and cakes. We got croissants, pain au chocolat, éclair au chocolat, and a few baguettes as well as the brioche sucre. Everything was amazing! Great costumer service as well. Recommended you get there early while supplies last even though they stay open until 19:30. You can call ahead and place an order wand they'll set it aside for you to pickup so you're sure to get what you're looking for. 100% recommend trying!

Lovely bakery with good baguette and croissants. We haven’t tried the other pastries and breads. But they all looked very tasty.
Kateřina Králová★★★★★
The best Boulangerie in Nantes 😍 We enjoyed some delicious croissants and other pastries 😋
Nancy S★★★★★
The plan was to buy pastries from the boulangerie du coin to bring back to Manchester as food souvenir. Somehow, Google Maps took us to cuisine boulangère so we bought a Babka and a croissant. Then we realised we were opposite to the boulangerie du coin where we bought a gâteau nantais. Absolutely impressed with the pastries from both sites. All freshly baked and big in size. The Babka was soft and fluffy. Not too sweet and had some bitterness from the dark chocolate. There was also whole hazelnut for a bit of crunch. The croissant was super light and crispy in texture, and not greasy at all. The gâteau nantais was really good too. Again not too sweet. Was just perfect! All the staff from both sites were friendly and patient with me when trying to order in French. Thank you! Our only regret now is that we should have bought more as we really miss it.
Catherine Reisima★★★★★
Our favourite boulangerie in Nantes! We visited twice during our long weekend visit and enjoyed an array of pastries and baked delights. We especially loved the Babka Marguerite with chocolate and hazelnuts. Pain au chocolat, croissants, baguettes - très délicieux! Lovely bakery and friendly staff. Wish this was my local 😄 Merci!

If you are coming, remember to book a table. They are so popular that there’s no seats for walk in almost. I think it’s a bit overrated and overpriced for breakfast. I would say the bread/pastries are so so. The bread is cold rather than warm. A bit disappointing. Coffee is nicer in comparison. Staff is okay but not very flexible.
Ema Ardelová★★★★★
The best almond croissants in Nantes. I loved them so much that I went back to buy one three times in just three days. Great prices, great coffee, comfortable seating, and very friendly staff. Even with my poor French, they really tried to understand me - thank you, I truly appreciated that. Definitely a very tourist-friendly place. A spot in Nantes you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
Tatjana George★★★★★
I visited this salon de thé three times before writing a review. Always pleasure to come there! Lovely and cosy design with good atmosphere. Perfect cappuccino, delicious rosemary latte and real hot chocolate. Cakes are not very sweet, authentic flavour. Mmm.. le pavé, le chou jasmin, rolls d'hiver, brioche (vegan) au potimarron, la galette noisettes-sauge, flan praline - "Comme c'est délicieux !" Butter croissants - definitely the best in Nantes. The staff was also super nice and welcoming. Definitely recommend a trip. I’ll be back 😉
David Springer★★★★★
A very cosy spot with fantastic pastries baked on site. The quartier Hauts Pavés is also very cosy and a wonderful place to visit when you want to experience Nantes as a local.

Absolutely in love with ArnO Boulangerie! 🧁✨ Every cake we tried was not only beautifully crafted but also incredibly delicious. The lemon tart had the perfect balance of tangy and sweet with a light, fluffy meringue on top. The pistachio cake was rich and nutty with amazing texture, and the mango-passion fruit cake was refreshing, fruity, and not overly sweet — just perfect! You can really tell they put heart into every creation. The presentation is stunning, the flavors are well-balanced, and everything tastes as good as it looks (if not better!). Highly recommend this place if you’re a dessert lover or just want to treat yourself to something special.
Mark Butenko Černe★★★★★
By far one of the best croissants I have ever tasted! So much butter present, just wow. Tried other products as well and they were just as good! Go try it, you won't regret it 🙂
Kitchen Insider★★★★★
Im dizzy with the selection here. Terrific breads and patisserie work, that could easily earn them a Legion d'honneur if i knew what it was, or what it takes to earn one. The work on display is as precise as a Swiss watchmaker. The service so caring and informative, i though I had long lost french relatives. Come here and be ready to smile.
christie choo★★★★★
of the 3 days we were in nantes, we came here for breakfast on 2 mornings and even got lunch to go before heading to the airport. pain au chocolat was lovely. madelines & this chocolate fondant were still phenomenal even after a flight back home. just note that there isn’t any latte here!
David Zygmunt★★★★★
Amazing croissant, which goes without saying as it has won so many awards, but what is pleasantly surprising is the size and modest price of this excellent treat along with friendly staff and efficient service. Great selection of desserts overall. I also had the apple tart and the pain au chocolate. Went back for a lemon meringue. Wish I had more space so I could try everything, the spirit was willing but the flesh was weak.

So Coco was recommended to me by a trusted source while I was in Nantes: a completely artisanal pastry shop, run by a passionate young woman who works little miracles. The welcome was very attentive, the service quick, and the advice precise: I naturally opted for a Nantes cake, which had traveled quite a distance by train (my journey from Nantes to Rennes was delayed by two hours). The friends I brought my cake to are true connoisseurs. We found it delicious. A subtle blend of flavors. Bravo 🎈 and thank you 🙏
lea mr★★★★★
A wonderful discovery! So Coco offers a carefully curated selection of breads, pastries, sandwiches, and cakes. The prices are admittedly rather high, but still reasonable considering the quantity and quality of the products. I'll be back!
Vero Aruki★★★★★
I've been a regular customer at this bakery for several months now. I can therefore attest to the consistent quality of their products: crispy baguettes, croissants that are a true Proustian madeleine, delicious Christmas cakes—the chocolate-ginger one was a bold choice, but it was original and excellent—and just two days ago, a three-chocolate treat. You can immediately tell the quality of the products is there, and for that alone, it's worth the trip. Well done for your commitment to good and beautiful things.
Eden Markin★★★★★
After my visit this evening, I can only express my delight at the quality of the products. I had the opportunity to taste some delicious treats when this bakery first opened, and I'm extremely pleased to see that after several months, the quality remains consistent. A pleasant shop, a warm staff, and carefully crafted products. I highly recommend the lemon madeleine, soft and moist, or the chocolate-hazelnut cookies for those with a sweet tooth! What a pleasure to have this bakery in the neighborhood! So Nantes-style, and above all, so delicious 🥰
julie CLEMENT★★★★★
At So Coco, everything is beautiful, delicious, and full of personality. You can feel the genuine passion behind each creation, from the crusty bread to the melt-in-your-mouth pastries, not to mention the original and perfectly balanced little sweet treats. Special mention goes to the warm and welcoming service. A place that combines indulgence, aesthetics, and sincerity.

Terrific lemon tart. I think the almond pate was a bit "extended". And the trick of not pre filling the sandwiches is clever. Pity those fillings go into a par bake. Nice enough spot to sit and the team is had were friendly. Yes, you can do better in nantes. But you can also do a lot worse. If you're here, they're here.

The variety of bread is huge. Everything is yummy. The quality is amazing. Taste is definitely there. And the service is excellent.

An amazing experience! I was greeted by a lovely sales person who knew the pastries and recommended me some absolutely delicious items! The pastry was crispy and super fresh. I dined in, and on walking into the dining area was pleasantly surprised to see a view of the working kitchen, with the co-founder and pastry chef hard at work making beautiful pastries. It was very mesmerising to watch the precision and care that he put into every pastry he made. I would highly recommend a stop at Alvéole!
David Pinto★★★★★
This place has some of the best pastries I've ever eaten in my life. And I've eaten a lot. Strongly recommend everything in this picture (best croissant I've ever eaten), but I will highlight the hot dog as it is more unexpected, while my girlfriend wants to put the finger chocolat on the spotlight. Even the lattes were great. Extremely friendly staff, with very fair pricing (maybe unfair for them, because things were that good). Mandatory visit if you're in the area.

Wonderful pastries, service and quality coffee. I just wanted a few croissants to take away, I ended up sitting at one of their lovely outdoor tables and enjoying a great breakfast!

Fabulous lunch. Quiche, toastie and ciabatta...excellent ingredients and beautifully cooked. Finished off with excellent flat white coffees. Treat yourself...the orange ginger cake is superb. Extremely friendly and professional staff.
Mi (Triptico)★★★★☆
Prices are a bit higher than average, but justified by the quality. The place is beautiful both outside and inside, with a pleasant atmosphere. The baked goods are truly delicious. Another positive note: the tea and coffee portions are larger than usual. However, it’s not the ideal place if you’re planning to work from there.
Stephanie Lehuger★★★★★
By far my favorite boulangerie in Nantes! And the coffee is amazing too. I love the atmosphere of the place. Very welcoming, lots of light and plants. It’s beautiful, laid-back, kids-friendly (with a little corner full of books and games) and the team is fluent in English if French is not your first language. The quality of the products is very high and the chefs, on top of mastering the classics, are super inventive and propose original creations that are delicious. The best place for breakfast, lunch, brunch and tea time! Or chill with a good tea, coffee or fresh drink in between. And buy bread or viennoiseries of course. LOVE the place!

Bit cramped but very good coffee and very friendly staff. On the left is restaurant seating and on the right is for folks just having coffee.

I was walking by and the brioche on the window called my attention. Luckyly I entered. The attention was amazing and when asked for their star product they recommended the brioche and I wasn't just "not disappointed", I can tell this was the best brioche ever bought in francenso far. Tasty, airy, well fermented. The framboise financiers were really good as well. Overall a great experience and I recommend it 100%.

Ah, the sheer torment I endured at this establishment! To be subjected to the monstrous delight of banana and chocolate croissant, a concoction so fiendishly delicious, it should be outlawed. Each bite, an act of pure rebellion against the mundane, catapulted me into a realm of guilt-ridden ecstasy. Oh, how cruelly irresistible, leading me down the path of delectable sin. Truly, a guilty pleasure of the highest order, mocking my attempts at self-restraint with its siren call. How I suffer under the weight of such culinary wizardry!

Great bakery but terrible customer service for foreigners. This bakery produces delicious pastries and bread. However, I no longer go there because not only does the manager make zero effort to speak English, her attitude was incredibly unprofessional when she couldn't understand my order - the loud sighing, gestures and aggressive tone of voice are embarrassing, especially in front of many customers. It's such a shame for the other employees who are very friendly but whose efforts are ruined by one individual.

How to Choose the Best Bakery in Nantes

Selecting the right bakery is often about understanding your own preferences and timing your visit correctly. A great bakery in Nantes is defined not just by its display case but by the texture of its crumb and the aroma of its crust. The following tips will help you navigate the city’s offerings like a local rather than a tourist, ensuring you get the freshest and most authentic products available.

1. Look for the "Artisan Boulanger" Sign

In France, the title Artisan Boulanger is legally protected. It means the bread is kneaded, shaped, and baked on the premises. If you see this sign on the window, you are guaranteed freshness and craftsmanship rather than frozen dough being reheated. This is the first filter to apply when walking through the city center.

2. Time Your Visit with the Oven Schedule

The best time to buy bread in Nantes is usually between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, or again around 4:00 PM when the after-school and after-work batches come out. If you want a warm baguette, ask the staff what time the next batch is coming out. A true artisan will happily tell you the schedule.

3. Check the Color of the Crust

A well-baked loaf should have a deep, caramelized color—often described as bien cuit. Pale bread often indicates a rushed fermentation process or a low oven temperature. Don’t be afraid to ask for the darkest baguette in the basket; it will have the most complex flavor and the crispiest crust.

4. Understand the Flour

Many top bakeries in Nantes use heritage grains like blé ancien or locally milled flour from Moulin de la Bidière. These flours are lower in gluten and higher in minerals, resulting in a more digestible and flavorful bread. If you have gluten sensitivities, look for bakeries that specialize in grand épeautre (spelt) or small spelt loaves.

5. Don’t Sleep on the Sandwich Counter

While pastries get the attention, the sandwich or tartine menu is where a bakery proves its worth. Look for bakeries using their own bread with seasonal ingredients like goat cheese, roasted vegetables, or rillettes from local producers. It is the cheapest and most authentic lunch you can find in the city.

6. Check for Seasonality in Pastries

A top-tier patisserie changes its menu with the seasons. If you see strawberry tarts in December, it is often a sign of imported ingredients. The best bakeries in Nantes will feature mirabelle plums in late summer, apples and pears in autumn, and rhubarb in spring. This commitment to seasonality indicates a chef who cares about flavor.

Nantes offers a bakery experience that rivals Paris without the pretension or the long queues of tourists. The city’s bakers are approachable, passionate, and deeply connected to the agricultural landscape of Brittany and the Loire Valley. Whether you are staying in the historic center or venturing out to the Île de Nantes, you are never far from a world-class loaf of bread.

Take your time to wander, smell the butter, and ask questions. The perfect baguette in Nantes is rarely found in a guidebook; it is found by following your nose and trusting the artisans who dedicate their lives to the craft. Enjoy the journey, and bon appétit.
