12 Pharmacies in Vitoria-Gasteiz City Centre

Finding a reliable pharmacy is one of those small but essential tasks that matters when you live in a city or are just visiting. Whether you have run out of a prescription, need advice for a sudden headache, or are looking for a specific baby formula, knowing where to go saves valuable time. In a compact urban center like Vitoria-Gasteiz, accessibility is usually excellent, but the sheer number of options can sometimes feel overwhelming.

The historic center of the capital of Álava is a vibrant mix of medieval streets, bustling shopping avenues, and quiet residential squares. Within this dense urban fabric, pharmacies are strategically placed to serve both the local population and the thousands of tourists who walk the Camino de Santiago or visit the Cathedral of Santa María. Most establishments are modern, but many retain a traditional, personalized approach to customer care that is highly valued in the Basque Country.

Navigating the Spanish healthcare system as a foreigner or a newcomer can sometimes be confusing, particularly regarding prescriptions. However, pharmacists in Spain are highly trained professionals who often act as the first point of contact for minor ailments. They can provide advice in multiple languages, help you understand local medication names, and direct you to the nearest medical center if a situation requires a doctor’s attention.

One unique aspect of the Spanish pharmacy system is the strict regulation regarding opening hours. While the shops listed below offer standard daytime service, the city operates a rotating schedule for late-night and weekend availability. Every pharmacy window displays a list of "Farmacias de Guardia" (on-duty pharmacies), ensuring that residents and visitors always have access to urgent medication, even when most businesses are closed.

Location is key when you are on foot in a city designed for pedestrians. Many of the best pharmacies in Vitoria-Gasteiz are located along major thoroughfares like Calle Dato, Calle Postas, or near the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. This means you can often combine a trip to the pharmacy with your daily errands, without needing to deviate far from the main pedestrian routes.

When choosing where to go, consider what specific services you might need beyond just picking up medication. Many city-center pharmacies offer specialized services such as weight management consultations, dermo-cosmetic analysis, or the preparation of personalized medication formulas (fórmulas magistrales). Others focus heavily on orthopedic supports or natural remedies, providing a level of specialization that goes beyond a simple retail counter.

Below is a curated list of established pharmacies located within the heart of Vitoria-Gasteiz. These locations are known for their central positioning, professional service, and consistent availability to help you manage your health while navigating the city.

It's a pharmacy open every day of the year and they always have everything. Whenever I've gone there, they've always had what I was looking for. Plus, it's great that if you need something, even on a holiday, they're open. So it's perfect. They're also attentive and provide excellent service.
Daniel Narváez★★★★☆
It's very good, but I'd give it another star if the employees had a small chair or something to sit on; standing for the entire shift is brutal 😭
Jose Francisco Merchan Gallegos★★★★★
I love coming to this pharmacy because it has everything. The staff are very attentive and friendly.

Always great service and advice with great kindness and respect, no matter the time. For me, one of the best. I hope this helps someone.

I think if she's on duty, the priority should be emergencies, not samples of sunscreen or nail polish. What do you think? Because maybe the concept has changed.

With a prescription for 10 tablets, the student asked if she could give me the 20-tablet pack since they were out of stock. The pharmacist replied, "No problem, it's not covered." Everything sells.

Bad experience at this pharmacy. They accused me of stealing and humiliated me in front of everyone after I finished paying for some eye drops. Although they apologized, the poor treatment I received is unforgivable. One less customer.

First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude for the exceptionally professional service, especially from the woman who assisted me today. She patiently explained everything, given the high volume of work, and offered incredibly empathetic support regarding my father's serious health issue. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and I mean that in the truest sense.

I loved the staff from before, the ones who had been there forever. But the current staff are also nice, although you can tell they lack experience due to their youth when you ask for advice. I use it regularly because my whole family has always gone there. And because it's close to my house. Since the renovation, I'm surprised that they have pet supplies; they don't seem to belong in a pharmacy. Otherwise, the service is good, and as in any place with several employees, some are more attentive than others.
Esti★☆☆☆☆
They recently changed their staff. The young woman with glasses is clearly unmotivated. If the prescription code isn't scanned, she complains about having to enter it manually and refuses to give a receipt. She's completely lost in her job. There are three similar millennials with terrible attitudes and customer service skills. I understand they might be learning, but their attitude leaves much to be desired. Their greatest strengths are minimal effort, sour faces, and zero problem-solving ability. They practically encourage customers to visit other pharmacies, as they give up at the slightest barcode scanner error, don't provide reservation information properly, and are utterly incapable of handling their positions. Months ago, you had hardworking and enthusiastic staff. It's a shame the current choices are so disappointing.
estefania penilla★★★★★
It's an amazing pharmacy, they have everything. You can even find colognes to suit all tastes 😍 I love it 🫶🏻
llaollao Zg★★☆☆☆
The employee was terrible. She didn't even ask if I wanted a ticket, and they didn't give them out. They also seemed to favor certain people; the man got one, but I didn't. What if I needed a ticket to exchange items? On top of that, the employee had a look on her face like I owed her money! 😂
L. T.★★★★★
I was looking for a good mosquito repellent and had heard great things about one they make at this pharmacy. I asked them for information via WhatsApp and they responded very quickly, giving me all the details. They were very kind and professional. They sent me the product the next day, although there was a problem with the delivery company and it took longer than expected. Even though the problem had nothing to do with the pharmacy, they helped me as much as they could and resolved the issue. Professionalism and kindness: 10/10 I will definitely use their services again.

I arrived with my things in tow (fresh from the emergency room), and it was the 24-hour pharmacy. Since I'm from outside Álava, they made it incredibly easy with my health insurance card. The service was excellent. "Don't worry, we're here until 9 a.m.," they told me. I seriously doubt I would have been treated like that at the pharmacy next door.

1 a.m. with a nervous breakdown... Thank you, Iñigo, for your kindness.
Txema Prats★☆☆☆☆
I just came in, I'm from Tarragona, to get my blood pressure checked because I was feeling dizzy outside. Since they were about to close, they refused and sent me to the Virgen Blanca clinic, even though I told them I had no idea where to go. Inhumane and pathetic treatment. What's more, the employee, the pharmacist, was ranting about the manager to a customer because they didn't have air conditioning and only had a fan. Pathetic.
Steve Bergunde★★★★★
I've lived near this pharmacy for a couple of years now, and I have a family with children. Because of this, I've taken advantage of their support many times, and they've always been very helpful! Thank you to the team at Isabel López Pharmacy and Orthopedics!

I've been debating whether or not to post this comment for months, but after reading all the others and seeing that they all refer to the same person, I think it's worth it. I went in one morning to make a return because the prescription fell the other day, and they told me to come back and they'd refund my money. Mr. Felipe (yes, we know him, and he's been there for years; I don't know how he still works) told me to come back at night, since that's when I bought it, and they don't use the same card reader then. It's not the first time this has happened to me, and on top of that, he's incredibly rude. I keep coming to this pharmacy because it's conveniently located and because of the other employees, who I have no complaints about. And don't even get me started on when he charges you for something. Depending on the day and time, he gives you a different price. Then you go to ask for the receipt, and besides giving you a dirty look, sometimes he just scribbles it down on a piece of paper and that's it...

They don't accept returns on medications, even though they weren't opened and 24 hours hadn't passed. Their argument is that it could have been in a car at 40 degrees Celsius in the middle of March. In short, 86 euros down the drain. I'm sorry, but I won't be back. Responding to the pharmacist's message: When they ask for donations of leftover medications from homes for their use, those are fine, right?

I was out of medication one Saturday, and they were the ones who provided the solution. Thanks to their attentiveness and kindness, my dog was able to recover from severe stomach pains. A young man helped me, and despite having worked all day, his service was outstanding.

I reiterate that this is the best pharmacy I've ever shopped at. They are friendly, pleasant, and super professional. I have one right outside my building, and I prefer to walk there rather than shop at the one right outside my building.

Visiting Farmacia Mallagaray, I found a pharmacy with a diverse selection, including natural medicine and dermocosmetic products. Its location in Vitoria-Gasteiz and extended hours make it easily accessible. The staff handles inquiries professionally, providing information on available products. For those seeking specific wellness options or flexible hours, this pharmacy could be a good choice.
Goizargi Aristi★★★★★
The best service in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Thank you for so many years!
Aitor Alkorta★★★★★
EXCELLENT!!! The pharmacy is impressive for its spaciousness, organization, cleanliness, and brightness. They have a wide range of products to meet our needs as customers, and if they don't have the product you need, they'll order it for you and get it within a few hours. The advice and attention from the team is exceptional; they are always willing to help and provide solutions. Eva Mallagaray, along with Marina and the entire team, always provide highly professional service whenever I visit their pharmacy.
Paloma Juanma★★★★★
Excellent service, super professional and very empathetic. After having been to three previous pharmacies looking for a medication they didn't have, when the same thing happened here, they went to the trouble of searching through a computer application to see which other pharmacy might have it, and even called to make sure they reserved it for me. I was suffering from terrible sciatica, and traveling all over the city looking for it was torture. From today on, this is my go-to pharmacy.
María Luisa Garnica★☆☆☆☆
Although I have a pharmacy across the street from my house, Mallagaray Pharmacy is on my way to work, and I used to go there. Yesterday, I felt I received poor service. When I entered, I was greeted politely, as usual. I handed over my health insurance card and asked for what I needed. At that moment, the person serving me saw a cell phone on the counter and asked if it was mine. I replied no, she took the phone and disappeared. After a while, Marina appeared and told me to come this way, referring to the counter where she was standing. I replied that a colleague was already helping me, and she reluctantly came over to the counter where I was, took my card from where her colleague had left it, and served me in an arrogant manner. When I got home, I realized that the expiration date of the dispensed medication was November 2024, and yesterday, when I bought it, it was October 31, 2024. It's clearly legal, but my doctor advised me not to take all 56 pills in the package if I don't need them. Because of the very short expiration date, I'll have to throw away the medication and some of the money I spent on it. I won't be going back to this pharmacy.

It's truly a pleasure to come to this pharmacy. I've always received excellent service, and all the staff are incredibly friendly. Especially a young, dark-haired woman who always has a smile, patiently explains everything, and makes the service truly outstanding. If I had to find a fault, it would be that the current renovations might make it a little less comfortable, but that's completely understandable since these things are sometimes beyond their control, and ultimately, it will surely be for the better. I recommend it wholeheartedly. You can tell when a place genuinely cares about its customers.
Aritz Delgado Sánchez★☆☆☆☆
Last visit to this pharmacy. After calling to reserve medication, I arrived and was told they didn't have the number of boxes I had previously reserved by phone. They even added, "It's not my problem that you didn't reserve them." Zero professionalism and boundless pride. After going there my whole life because I live across the street, I will never set foot in this pharmacy again.

Very professional. Good location.

It's always open, the girls are very attentive and the service is excellent.

A while ago I had to switch pharmacies, worried it would be very different from the previous one. I was pleasantly surprised! I've been very lucky to find Fernando, Marta, and a young Arab woman working there. All three of them provide exemplary customer service. Although I find the prices of some products excessive, the customer service these three offer has made this pharmacy my go-to place.

Excellent pharmacy! The team is super professional and friendly. They always give great advice, and it's clear they know what they're talking about. They also have many high-quality services and brands that I don't usually find in other pharmacies, which is much appreciated. The renovation is making it look beautiful; everything is very organized, bright, and well-maintained. I'm uploading a photo because it's turning out great! 😃 Definitely a pharmacy to keep in mind.

Impeccable service. Mara is an excellent professional, an expert in several fields, and provides exquisite customer service. Her team is also highly qualified, making a visit to her pharmacy much more than just buying medication.

They were unfriendly to the customer, and also unprofessional and incompetent. When asked for a product, despite repeatedly pointing out their mistake, they received rude responses. They said things like, "If you want more, just let me know so I don't have to make another trip." They lacked tact in public speaking.

I have never visited this pharmacy. However I am a devoted friend of Father Federico Puente Valdivielso who passed away a few days ago. This pharmacy was inaugurated by his father many years ago. He mentioned it in his interview and was extremely proud of his brother who has kept the family legacy alive. I just wanted to let his family and friends know that Father Federico was and will always be an inspiration and I will live my life the way he advised… serve … be humble and live a path of faith. I’m blessed to have had Father Federico in my life! Amen

I went the other day looking for something for my face, which is in terrible shape after wearing a mask for so long... Tips for Using Pharmacies in Vitoria-Gasteiz

To make your experience as smooth as possible, it helps to understand a few local customs and practical details regarding how pharmacies operate in the city center. Whether you are a resident managing a chronic condition or a traveler needing a quick fix, these guidelines will help you navigate the system efficiently and safely.

Look for the Green Cross: Pharmacies in Spain are easily identifiable by a bright green cross sign, often illuminated or flashing. Unlike in some countries where drugstores sell groceries and electronics, a "Farmacia" here is strictly a health-focused establishment. If you need basic toiletries or snacks, you will usually need to visit a "Perfumería" or a supermarket instead.

Know the On-Duty Schedule: If you need medication after 9:00 PM, on a Sunday, or during a public holiday, you cannot simply walk into any pharmacy. You must locate the "Farmacia de Guardia." The easiest way to find the current on-duty location is to check the door of any closed pharmacy, which will have a printed list, or search online through the Colegio Oficial de Farmacéuticos de Álava.

Bring Your Health Card (Tarjeta Sanitaria): If you are a resident of Spain and have a prescription from a public health doctor, you will need your individual health card to collect your medication. The electronic prescription system in the Basque Country (Osakidetza) is highly efficient; the pharmacist can see your active prescriptions on their computer system simply by scanning your card, meaning you don’t necessarily need a paper script.

Don’t Underestimate the Pharmacist’s Advice: For minor ailments like colds, allergies, or insect bites, you can save a trip to the emergency room by consulting a pharmacist first. They are qualified to assess symptoms and recommend over-the-counter treatments. In the Basque Country, many pharmacists speak English or French, but having a translation app ready can help explain specific symptoms.

Ask About Generic Brands: Spanish pharmacies routinely stock both brand-name drugs and generic equivalents (EFG – Especialidad Farmacéutica Genérica). If a doctor prescribes a specific brand, the pharmacist must dispense it, but if you are buying over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen or paracetamol, asking for the "genérico" can save you a significant amount of money while providing the exact same medical benefit.

The convenience of having high-quality pharmaceutical care within walking distance is a major advantage of staying in central Vitoria-Gasteiz. The professionals working behind these counters are deeply integrated into the community and are usually happy to help with directions, health advice, or even just providing a quiet moment to rest if you are feeling unwell on the street.

Remember that while the city is very safe and walkable, health issues can arise unexpectedly. By familiarizing yourself with the locations listed above and understanding the on-duty system, you ensure that a minor inconvenience doesn’t turn into a major disruption to your day in this beautiful Basque capital.
