Finding a reliable pharmacy is an essential part of everyday life, whether you are a resident managing a chronic condition or a traveler who has just arrived and realized you forgot your essential toiletries. In a bustling city like Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the network of farmacias is extensive, well-regulated, and highly accessible. However, knowing which ones offer specialized services, late-night hours, or multilingual staff can save you valuable time and stress.
The Spanish pharmacy system is distinct from many other countries. While you can buy basic items like bandages or vitamins over the counter, many medications that are freely available in other parts of Europe or the US require a prescription here. Pharmacists in Spain are highly trained medical professionals who can often diagnose minor ailments and dispense advice without requiring a doctor’s visit, acting as a first point of contact for the healthcare system.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the largest city in the Canary Islands, blending a vibrant urban lifestyle with the relaxed atmosphere of the Atlantic. The city is home to a diverse population, including a large expat community from Northern Europe and a constant influx of tourists from cruise ships and international flights. Consequently, the best pharmacies here are accustomed to handling international prescriptions and explaining Spanish medication equivalents.
Navigating the green cross signs scattered across the city’s neighborhoods—from the historic district of Vegueta to the modern port area and the surf-friendly beach of Las Canteras—can be overwhelming if you are in a hurry. Some pharmacies specialize in dermocosmetics, others in pediatric care, and many offer 24-hour emergency services on a rotating schedule. Understanding this landscape ensures you receive the right care without unnecessary delays.
Whether you need a specific brand of sunscreen that protects the island’s unique marine life, a refill for blood pressure medication, or a late-night antihistamine for an unexpected allergic reaction, there is a pharmacy nearby. This guide highlights some of the most trusted and strategically located pharmacies in the city. We have selected these locations based on their accessibility, range of services, and reputation for customer care.
Below, you will find a curated list of establishments that stand out for their professionalism and convenience. We have considered factors such as proximity to major tourist hubs, availability of English-speaking staff, and extended operating hours. This list is designed to help you find exactly what you need, whether you are staying for a weekend or a lifetime.

I always make a point of visiting Farmacia Catedral whenever I’m in Las Palmas, and it’s largely thanks to Amélia Fung. She is incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares about helping you find the best solution.
Amélia is always ready to assist with a smile and gives thoughtful, trustworthy advice every time. It’s rare to find someone so consistent and dedicated.
This is the only pharmacy I go to when I’m in Las Palmas. Thank you, Amélia 😀

Huge, it has everything and there are two checkouts where you can be served if there is a queue.

Message for Nicole, who posted some photos of the pharmacy in her message
and complained that the pharmacy wasn't open. If you look closely at your photo, you'll see that the sign says they're open 365 days a year UNTIL midnight, which doesn't mean it's open 24 hours. Stop being so angry and pay more attention.

A bit busy, but if you're in need of a rare prescription chances are they'll have it on stock due to high their turnover. If you don't find it anywhere else don't forget to check here.

Worst pharmacy ever. They never have what you need, even if it’s something as simple as birth control and very rude women

Expensive but open late on Sunday

Pharmacy with an incredibly attentive Personalized Dispensing Service (SPD) led by Diana.
Sometimes it's too busy and they're not very efficient considering the number of employees.
You accumulate points with over-the-counter pharmacy sales.

First counter on the left, young woman at the entrance, very unfriendly. I asked for eye drops for daily eye pressure, which I've been using for two years, and they asked for a prescription, which no other pharmacy requires.
I went to another pharmacy in the area and had no problem.
P.S.: I don't need an apology. One less customer and another negative review.

Two visits and two masterclasses in how NOT to serve a customer. On both occasions, I encountered a spectacular lack of enthusiasm, quite unpleasant manners, and a level of professionalism that, in my experience, seems to be on vacation.
It's fascinating to walk into a pharmacy to buy something and leave with the feeling that you should have apologized for daring to cross the threshold. Apparently, serving a customer is a terribly inconvenient interruption.
The first time, I thought anyone could have a bad day. The second time, I realized that I had been naive to give them another chance.
Perhaps it's worth remembering that working with the public means dealing with people. And that in a pharmacy, such extravagant concepts as courtesy, empathy, and kindness should be included in the service, not charged as an extra.
Luckily, there are pharmacies where you're served by professionals who don't seem to suffer every time a customer enters.
A third visit would be pushing my luck. I'd rather shop at any other pharmacy than feel like I'm bothering them again just because I want to be served. Two wasted opportunities. I'll leave the third one to someone with more patience.

Concep RC★☆☆☆☆
The employee made a mistake, creating doubts among customers, forcing us to return another day, and on top of that, she acted arrogantly and overbearingly, practically forcing us to pay for the medication we were unsure about (again, because of her previous error). An elderly, now very vulnerable, long-time customer, received zero empathy. Inhumane and unpleasant treatment from two of the employees.

I went in the evening to get some syrup for my daughter, and the pharmacist recommended a different one. The next day I took it back because it was the same one my daughter was already taking. He refused to exchange it. He says medications can't be changed, and a couple of months ago they returned my son-in-law's Fortasec because he was breastfeeding and couldn't take it, and they returned some probiotics to me. We've been buying from them for years, and our 20-month-old uses everything from them. That's it; there are other pharmacies with more helpful staff.
Two days, as you mentioned in your response... I bought the syrup at 8:00 PM on Saturday. Perhaps I should go on Sunday and wait outside until they open on Monday? If you can't find the return, don't worry, it's already been processed. It's a shame, because the older gentleman and the girls have always treated me so well when I've gone to pick up the baby's milk I ordered online and the iron supplement my daughter ordered every month, every time I go for prescriptions or other products. They even gave me a free towel for my son once. I feel sorry for the rest of the staff. As I said, they were very kind, and thank you. There are other pharmacies.

I've had to visit this pharmacy several times this week, and every time I go, I think about how incredibly hot it is inside. One of my last purchases, besides medication, was some candy that, when I opened it, was completely stuck together and melted. How is it possible that they have medications and other things like baby formula in that heat? I was going to buy some because they have very good prices, but I'm not going to risk buying formula that's spoiled because of the heat. Besides, it seems insane to me that the employees work in those hot conditions, unable to put down their fans while serving customers. I don't know if the manager or managers are oblivious to this, because it's a pharmacy I won't be setting foot in again.

Extremely unfriendly, i needed a prescription, ok, so i asked where can i get one or see a private docter because i do not live here. She says with a arrogant look:

Heartless and unscrupulous people.
After calling urgently about a cut on my 5-year-old son's neck, just 4 minutes before closing time, they confirmed they had the necessary supplies and were waiting for me to arrive.
I arrived at 10:01 PM and they were already closed. They're supposed to close at 10:00 PM.
I rang the doorbell, and when I called... nothing.
The boy was bleeding, and I had to go to another pharmacy. I hope the owner takes note of the people he hires, if he is indeed the owner... excellent management of a healthcare business.
I wish you no good.

I think they've changed pharmacists, and it shows. I left the Negrín Hospital to pick up my mother's medication, which she received in the emergency room, and this pharmacy was on the way and they had it. Tips for Using Pharmacies in Las Palmas
While finding a physical location is half the battle, understanding how to navigate the local system will make your experience seamless. Spanish pharmacies operate under specific regulations that might differ from what you are used to back home. Here are some essential tips to ensure you get the right medication and the best advice during your time in the city.
Know the "Farmacia de Guardia" (On-Duty Pharmacy) System
Pharmacies in Spain do not generally stay open 24/7 like in some other countries. Instead, they operate on a rotating schedule for nights, Sundays, and public holidays. These are called Farmacias de Guardia. Every closed pharmacy will post a sign on their door listing the nearest duty pharmacies that are currently open. You can also find this information online or in local newspapers. If you need urgent medication after 10 PM, look for this system.
Bring Your Physical Prescription or Medication Box
If you are visiting from abroad, do not rely on a photo of your medication on your phone. Bring the original packaging or a physical copy of your prescription. Spanish pharmacists are legally restricted from dispensing certain controlled substances without a valid Spanish prescription. However, if you have the original box and a doctor’s note, they are often able to match the active ingredient to a local equivalent or advise you on how to see a doctor quickly.
Ask for the "Genérico" to Save Money
Brand loyalty is common, but medication prices in Spain are strictly regulated by the government. If you are prescribed a medication, the pharmacist is required to dispense the cheapest available generic version unless the doctor specifies otherwise. If you are paying out of pocket (as many tourists do), always ask, "¿Tiene el genérico?" (Do you have the generic?). This can save you a significant amount of money compared to buying a big brand name.
Don’t Underestimate the Pharmacist’s Diagnostic Role
In Las Palmas, you do not always need to go to a hospital or a private clinic for minor issues like insect bites, mild sunburn, conjunctivitis, or a simple urinary tract infection. Pharmacists are empowered to assess symptoms and dispense appropriate medication for minor ailments. This saves you hours of waiting in emergency rooms. Be prepared to describe your symptoms clearly; many pharmacists in tourist areas speak excellent English and German.
Check for Specialized Services Like Home Delivery and Compounding
Many modern pharmacies in Las Palmas offer services beyond simply filling prescriptions. If you are elderly, disabled, or simply too sick to leave your hotel, ask if the pharmacy offers home delivery. Additionally, if you need a specific dosage that is not commercially available, look for pharmacies that advertise "Formulación Magistral" (compounding). This is particularly useful for children’s medicine or dermatological creams.
The healthcare infrastructure in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is robust, and the pharmacy network is a cornerstone of that system. By choosing a pharmacy from the list above, you are ensuring that you have access to qualified professionals who adhere to strict European safety standards. Whether you are dealing with a minor travel ailment or managing a long-term health condition, the level of care remains consistently high across the city.
Ultimately, the goal is to keep you healthy so you can enjoy everything this beautiful island has to offer. Keep this guide handy, note the location of the nearest Farmacia de Guardia to your accommodation, and rest assured that help is never far away in Las Palmas.
