Nestled in the heart of Provence, Avignon is a city of papal palaces, medieval bridges, and sun-drenched cobblestone squares. Yet beyond its historic ramparts, a quiet culinary renaissance has taken hold of the Rhône Valley. The city’s dining scene now pulses with an energy that blends traditional French gastronomy with contemporary global flair.
For lovers of Japanese cuisine, Avignon offers a surprisingly deep and refined selection of sushi restaurants. From intimate counters run by master chefs to sleek modern dining rooms, the choices reflect a commitment to precision and freshness. Whether you crave classic nigiri, creative fusion rolls, or delicate sashimi, the options are both varied and excellent.
Provençal access to the Mediterranean means local seafood often arrives daily, giving sushi chefs a distinct advantage. Many of Avignon’s best sushi spots source their fish with the same care as the city’s top seafood bistros. This focus on freshness elevates even the simplest salmon roll into something memorable.
In a city known for slow living and long lunches, sushi fits surprisingly well into the rhythm of Avignon. It offers a lighter alternative to hearty daubes and rich gratins, especially during warm summer afternoons. Locals and visitors alike have embraced these refined Japanese menus as part of the modern Provençal table.
The best sushi experiences in Avignon balance authenticity with a willingness to surprise. You will find traditional edomae techniques alongside playful rolls topped with local herbs or citrus. Each restaurant on this list has been chosen for its quality, consistency, and ability to deliver an exceptional meal.
Below, we explore twelve standout sushi spots that define the city’s Japanese dining scene. Each entry highlights what makes the restaurant unique, from signature dishes to atmosphere and service. Use this guide to plan your next omakase, casual lunch, or elegant dinner inside the walls of Avignon.

Kawaii new Japanese restaurant in the heart of the old city. We had a nice light lunch - zaru soba and unagi don. Beautifully presented and good flavours - though the soba dashi was not the best. Disclaimer: we met in Japan, lived there 10 years, and had our first child there. So our standards are high!

Lovely place. The lady is really welcoming and friendly. The food is nice and well priced

I highly recommend this restaurant, a truly authentic Japanese restaurant (walking into this izakaya felt like stepping back into Japan – the decor is fantastic – and they even offer hot towels for your hands before your meal, just like in Japan). The food is very well prepared (and, most importantly, it's authentic Japanese cuisine), and you can tell it's all homemade. The atmosphere is very friendly, and the waitress and chef are very welcoming. We didn't have to wait long between courses, and the prices are reasonable.

We had their Shake Yaki and the bento box and everything was delicious. We started with the three samples of Sake and each was unique and flavorful in its own way. I recommend you do this. The wasabi was fresh and had just the right amount of heat. And in addition the owner has a type of soy sauce that is thick and has a slight sweetness to it. The restaurant is between two old churches and we ate outside in the courtyard. Great atmosphere and the service was great as well. The owner and staff are happy to have their guests.

We came here for lunch. They have a very good lunch deal and kids menu. The Shake Menu was very good. The salmon was fresh and melted in the mouth like butter. The eggplant was an unexpected surprise. Very good value for money.

This Japanese restaurant is located within the old town, so you'll need to park outside and walk in. It operates on European hours, open from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM. The menu features dishes well-suited for Asian palates, including sushi, sashimi, grilled skewers, and soup. The food is delicious and the service is excellent, making it ideal for lunch.
Anna Maria Aloise★★★★★
I went to Naka on a Valentine’s Day (I was traveling for business and wanted to eat something in the town) and it was a pleasant dinner. The place was completely full and I still managed to get a table without a reservation and my food arrived super quickly. I had a Shake menu which was very good.

Naka is a cool place to eat, the ambience was really good. Relaxed and not too loud. They have some really cool seating. Hard to explain but the chairs sit on blocks so the chairs have no legs. Anyway the service was fantastic and the sushi was great. I recommend this place.

Kai★★★☆☆
I came here for sushi and overall it was okay, but not my favorite spot in Avignon.
I ordered a mix of different sushi. The highlight was definitely the chicken sushi with caramelized onions on top
really tasty and probably the most crowd-pleasing option on the menu. It felt more like fusion sushi than traditional sushi, but it worked well.
I also tried salmon and avocado maki, which was fine but nothing particularly memorable. Another roll was wrapped in rice paper, which unfortunately didn’t work for me the pieces were very sticky and all four pieces ended up stuck together, making them difficult to eat.
What disappointed me most was seeing the sushi being taken directly from the fridge already prepared. I understand places may prep sushi ahead of time, but when you go out for sushi, you usually expect it to feel freshly made. Even if preparation happens earlier, seeing it come straight from storage took away from the experience.
The waiter was friendly and pleasant, so no complaints there.
Overall: decent sushi if you're nearby and not too picky, but for the price, I’ve had better sushi elsewhere.

We’ve seen this restaurants in many different cities but had it for the first time in Avignon. Only ordered on Uber but their food is so delicious! Especially their bowl with crispy chicken, eggplant dish, and their sushi rolls were delicious as well. We ordered multiple times.

Cote sushi France - Avignon 🇫🇷
@cote_sushi
I have had enough French cuisine in the middle of my trip of South of France, was craving for some sushi, and I found this Japanese x Peru sushi place, which was exactly what I wanted!
Lots ceviche and cali style sushi rolls (sth like chotto maki) which I liked a lot!
I liked that deep fried sushi rice topped with Salmon tartare a lot! Everything was quite strong in flavour, which I liked a lot. As I’m always a big fan of ceviche, I was so happy with this meal!
Around euro 70 (2 pax)

we had a great experience. owner was super nice and made us feel very welcome.
you order via app, food and drinks are brought to the table super quick. delicious noodles. Lots of options for drinks, very refreshing.

This place has some of the best food I had in France. After having so much French food, I wanted a change and had some Taiwanese food. The environment was amazing- the owner spoke great Chinese and so did other diners. It was fun chatting in Chinese. Food came out quick. We ordered bamboo, fried chicken, and shrimp tempura as starters.
Bamboo: Flavorful with good texture, perfect way to start the meal
Fried chicken: Crispy, flavorful, and juicy. It was really well made
Shrimp Tempura: The shrimp was lightly breaded and fried, the inside was juicy with an amazingly light crisp outside.
For our main dishes, we got noodles with yakitori and 2 rice dishes with different meats.
Noodles with yakitori: The noodles were extremely flavorful with some vegetables to make it fresher. The yakitori was juicy and smoky, with a sweet glaze. Perfect pair
Rice with protein: The rice had many protein options, we got beef and chicken. The chicken had a teriyaki sauce, and the beef came with another sauce that paired with it well. Along with the fried egg and veggies, it was the perfect dish.
For drinks, we got a taro bubble tea with tapioca bubbles. We got it with half sugar. It wasn’t too sweet and the tapioca bubbles were nice and chewy and absorbed the tea well, it was perfect for my taste.
This place is a must try - especially if you’re Chinese or Taiwanese

I'm very surprised by the reviews already posted; upon closer inspection, it seems that only this review has been posted... So here's the opinion of a real customer.
The service is very pleasant and the staff are friendly.
The price is too high for the quality served...
I had some "calis" (a type of rice dish) from the previous day, and the rice was very dry. The "calis" from that day were barely any better.
The restaurant is located inside the Intermarché supermarket, and payment is made at the checkout.

Tips for Choosing the Right Sushi Spot in Avignon
Selecting the perfect sushi restaurant depends on more than just the menu. The following tips will help you match your dining style, budget, and expectations with the right table. Keep these practical considerations in mind before you book or walk in.
First, pay attention to the rice. Great sushi lives or dies by the quality of its seasoned rice, not just the fish. A restaurant that takes pride in its shari—slightly warm, well-vinegared, and perfectly textured—will almost always deliver a superior overall experience. Ask if the rice is prepared in-house daily and watch how the chefs handle each portion.
Second, look for daily or seasonal specials. The best sushi chefs in Avignon adjust their offerings based on what arrives from the Mediterranean and beyond. A board of daily specials signals a kitchen that prioritizes freshness over frozen convenience. If you see local fish featured, that is an excellent sign of both quality and creativity.
Third, consider the balance between classic and fusion. Some diners want strict tradition, while others enjoy rolls with local Provençal ingredients like basil, lemon zest, or olive oil. Decide what you are in the mood for before choosing a restaurant. Reading recent reviews and checking menu photos can help you understand each chef’s philosophy.
Fourth, do not overlook the lunch menu. Many of Avignon’s best sushi spots offer excellent midday sets that include miso soup, salad, and a selection of nigiri or rolls. These lunch formulas provide outstanding value and let you sample a kitchen’s skill without committing to a full dinner bill.
Finally, book ahead on weekends. Avignon attracts large numbers of tourists, especially from spring through autumn, and the top sushi restaurants fill quickly. A short phone call or online reservation ensures you will not be turned away. For special occasions, ask about counter seating to watch the chefs work up close.
Exploring Avignon’s sushi scene reveals a side of the city that many visitors never expect. Behind the medieval stone facades, chefs are quietly crafting some of the finest Japanese cuisine in southern France. Each meal becomes a dialogue between Provençal ingredients and Japanese precision.
Whether you are a local rediscovering your city or a traveler seeking a break from traditional French fare, these sushi spots deliver satisfaction. Take your time, try a few different addresses, and let the flavors of the Rhône meet the artistry of Japan on your plate.
