12 Best Supermarkets in Aix-en-Provence

For many visitors and residents alike, the rhythm of daily life in Aix-en-Provence is defined by its markets, cafés, and the simple pleasure of sourcing excellent food. While the city is famous for its historic open-air produce markets, knowing where to go for a full grocery shop or a specific imported ingredient is essential for practical living. Whether you are stocking a holiday rental apartment or doing the weekly family shop, the retail landscape offers a distinct mix of traditional French commerce and modern convenience.

Navigating the grocery options here involves understanding a balance between hypermarkets on the outskirts and smaller city-center stores. The French approach to food shopping often prioritizes quality, seasonality, and origin, which is reflected even in the larger chain stores. You will find that many supermarkets in this region carry an impressive selection of local Provençal wines, olive oils, and cheeses that you might not find elsewhere in the country. This makes even a routine errand feel like a cultural experience.

Parking and accessibility are key factors to consider when choosing where to shop in Aix. While the historic center is largely pedestrianized, offering charming but limited small-format stores, the periphery of the city hosts the larger retail zones. For those staying in the countryside surrounding the city, these larger out-of-town options often provide the most convenient solution for a comprehensive stock-up. Conversely, if you are on foot, the central locations serve as perfect stops for daily fresh bread and essentials.

This guide aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the best supermarkets in the area, catering to different needs and budgets. We have considered factors such as product range, quality of fresh produce, organic selections, and ease of access. From budget-friendly options to premium organic chains, the list below is designed to help you find exactly what you need without unnecessary searching.

Understanding the layout of French supermarkets can save you time and confusion. You will notice a strong emphasis on the bakery (boulangerie) and deli (traiteur) sections, often located near the entrance to entice shoppers with the smell of fresh baguettes. Additionally, the wine aisle is usually extensive, offering a deep dive into regional appellations like Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence and Palette. These stores are not just places to buy food; they are showcases of the region’s agricultural heritage.

Below is a curated selection of the most reliable and well-regarded supermarkets in Aix-en-Provence. This list includes a variety of formats, from massive hypermarkets with extensive non-food sections to specialized organic stores that focus strictly on high-quality, sustainable goods.

Carrefour Les Milles – Prepared Food Counter (Not Traiteur Island) I really wanted to like this counter because the service was excellent. The vendor who helped me was kind, patient, and spoke perfect English, which made it easy to navigate my clumsy French. Visually, everything looked great and well presented. Unfortunately, the food itself was a major disappointment. I bought the **boeuf bourguignon**, which looked delicious in the display, but when I reheated it at home it was clear something was wrong. Almost every piece that should have been meat was **gristle or fat**, to the point of being inedible. It felt like they’d used the worst leftovers of beef, and I was honestly just relieved we didn’t have guests to serve it to. The **grenaille potatoes** were also a let-down: very dry, as if they had been sitting for far too long under a heat lamp. The one saving grace: the **fougasse loaded with olives and tomatoes** – that was **fantastic** and absolutely worth buying again. In short: friendly staff 👍, beautiful display 👀, but **avoid the boeuf bourguignon and tired sides**.

I loved Intermarché so much. Unfortunately, one day I paid in cash. I am a student here in Aix, and I always have only €50 for my groceries for the whole month. I bought items worth €11, and I received my change from the machine. The machine gave me €39, but it dispensed it so quickly that, as we later saw on the security cameras, a €20 banknote fell to the floor immediately. I even stepped on it with my foot but didn’t notice it. I was talking to the cashier, then I took the rest of the change without checking how much it was. Later, on the cameras, we saw that an older man noticed the €20 on the floor. He watched it until I left, then came back and took it. Unfortunately, the staff couldn’t help—They recognized him from his loyalty card, but I don’t know why they didn’t contact him through another store, since they said he registered his card at a different location. So please be very careful when receiving change from machines. I really like the staff—they are friendly and kind—and I wish them all the best.

Just a 5 minute walk out of tourist area, you'll find this local residents grocery store. It offers a lot more product, such as a butcher on site, freshly squeezed juice, and best prices for comparable items at the other two stores we visited. Produce is fresh and staff very helpful. English is spoken well. Worth the little walk. Which also gives a local area more exposure to us.
Alexei Tumarkin★★★★☆
Google maps have corrected the location on their map. Now the directions are correct, so the negative reviews about that can be ignored (I have submitted the request to Google and it took them almost three weeks to make it right). Wasn't the store's fault!

I’m quite disappointed with this Auchan. It’s quite large but comes up short on dinning opportunities. Most Auchan that I have been too, Have a Flunch attached or food court. This Auchan doesn’t have a Flunch nor a food court. Even in the actual Auchan grocery store there are very few hot food options that are ready to eat. Huge Parking attached to a Huge Shopping mall with a tiny restaurant section. Very Disappointing experience.

Our go-to place. After the renovation from the former Casino market, things got a lot more relaxed and spacious, large fruits/vegetables section, excellent counter areas for fish and charcuterie, separate bakery.
MIsc★☆☆☆☆
I would have done some shopping while my electric car charged, but there are no toilets! Even though people sit outside on the chairs from their bakery with coffees, no bathroom. Absurd. First time on this roadtrip that a French supermarket did not have a toilet for customers. Pitty.
Thomas Kunselman (Thom K in Aix)★★★★★
My updated review 15 Mars: Since the renovation, this Intermarché has become an even better option. From the standpoint of accessibility from central Aix, it is, in my view, the best supermarket around — even if getting there does require hopping on Ligne 8 toward Arc. In a city where so many grocery stores feel tucked away in dim basements, with all the charm of a dungeon and only a fraction of what you actually need, this store is a welcome exception. It is bright, spacious, and genuinely useful, with a far better range than many of the smaller city options. You can find the kinds of things that are often missing elsewhere: prepared foods, broader grocery selection, and departments that make a real supermarket feel like a real supermarket. They even used to bake bread here, though I am not sure whether that is still the case — and in Aix, perhaps that hardly matters, since most of us are already nibbling our quignons on the walk home after stopping by a favorite boulangerie. Bonus point: they also seem to have the best price around on Tyrrells potato chips.

Could do with a better offer of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Nice carrefour store located in a central part of Aix. I shop here frequently and so far they have all the things I need. They have a decent fruit and vegetables section which is nice and they have a wide verity of packed meat and fish. They don’t have a butcher section in this store, so you only have packed meat and fish. The prices are nice, they also have occasional promos which is really good. The staff are nice, not so good with english but till help you to the best of their abilities if you need any help.

Carrefours are Always thé best place to buy groceries. This one right middle of the city is helpful to top up during any weekdays. It has the entire range of day to day stuff. The basmati rice and fresh coriander can be bought from here at the best price. They’ve there own parking so don’t worry about it. It has the photomaton as well for all your personal and official photo requirements at the cheaper price.

Unmanaged product selection. I do not like the fact that pigeons are still walking around the store, which can carry diseases and fleas - next to food, this is not a place for birds. Customer service is the worst, they work very slowly. The worst position is the department with cured meat, it goes through all possible acceptable norms of arrogance and neglect of the client. There are usually 3.4 people in a department, but only one works while cleaning, cleans meat cutting machines (and uses only one), covers the meat foil and during work, not before closing the store. The queue of waiting people is long, but only one employee serves, other employees talk to each other, laugh and tell each other stories in the presence of customers. The staff behave as if they were at a private party and do not pay attention to customers. If they do not want to work with the client and feel that they are going to this job as a punishment, let them change their job!

Purchasing from this market from past 4 years. Staff are efficient and products are refilled regularly. The fruit and vegetable section are replenished every Saturday and Tuesday. The checkout counters are both babble in person and self checkout machines. Please pay attention that gift cards are not allowed as payment method in self checkout machine. The prices of fruits and vegetables are cheaper compared other markets in Aix. Highly recommend to others. Also some of the relay deliver their packages to pick up too. I shop with you every week. Service isn't usually your strong point, but today it was particularly poor: no one answered when I asked for help. I politely asked a staff member for help with my loyalty card, which was blocked (a recurring problem, by the way). I don't mind at all that she couldn't help me or that, according to her, only a manager could unblock my card. However, what really bothered me was the way she spoke to me. I was polite and smiling, simply asking for help with a problem, but she responded in an unpleasant tone, as if I were bothering her just by asking a question.
Anne-Raphaëlle Bernard★☆☆☆☆
I arrived at 7:45 PM: "No, sorry, we're closed," 15 minutes before the time advertised online and at the entrance… disrespectful to customers, considering that in 15 minutes you have twice the time to walk around the store. It's all well and good to write "at your service" on the jacket, but they should actually do it. As a regular customer, I am outraged.

Useless very unhelpful people here. Do not ever get anything delivered here, you will not be helped or assisted in the least way possible. Grocery items also pretty expensive compared to Carrefour for example. They just take advantage of the fact that no other supermarket is in this locality. Absolutely not recommended. I also almost bought an expired item here if I didn't check the dates myself and inform them. Also the date was a year ago meaning they had a whole year to check it. That entire shelf was full of the product all expired already. This means no one is checking the inventory. All fruits and veggies rotten or not are in the same basket always and not frequently organised. Flies infesting on the rotten tomatoes or other fruits etc. Many problems! Just avoid it entirely.

Unfortunately, I don't know the hostess's name (she's blonde and absolutely lovely), but it's a real pleasure to run into her 🥹 She always asks customers if she can help when they're looking for something. Not all salespeople are so friendly; some don't even greet customers, but this saleswoman is truly exceptional 👌🏼 The shop is well-organized, with a clear layout that doesn't change every day, and attractive prices depending on the item (some are a little more expensive). Shocking supermarket. Bought 4 Beyond Burgers and noticed at home that all were out of date by over a week! I've tried to use the credit on that card three times since then and the people at the checkout can't see the credit even though it shows up in the app. What's more, on my shop today I noticed that there are again products out of date (28.12.2025). A good stock of groceries, household goods, apparel, but can be scary. On Thursday, 11/6 about 6 pm I purchased an umbrella and a few other things there. After purchase I paused by the front door to put them in my backpack and watched a large guard by the front door in heated discussion with a young man about equal height who he had backed against the wall. He seemed to be accusing the young man of something, as the young man kept shaking his head no. This went on for about 20 seconds or so with the guard becoming increasingly agitated, and at last the guard grabbed the man's collar with both hands and started violently shaking him while barking angrily at him. Continuing to shake the man violently, he moved to the front door which opened automatically and he went with him out the door. The young man appeared to be scared to death and at no time presented any resistance. After about another 15 seconds the guard returned to his post by the front door. Is this normal in France? I understand the store probably has problems with theft, the guards were everywhere, which is fine, but can they violently attack someone who is putting up no physical resistance? If the young man has committed theft the police should be called. Is this behavior approved by the store? Whatever the young man did, surely the guard committed a criminal act that he should be prosecuted for. Monoprix's reply is a shameless lie. I'd like to have a video of it but I can imagine the guard "respectfully" destroying my phone. I don't think this is necessarily what you have do to stay in business. Really, you could do better.

Tips for Shopping at Supermarkets in Aix-en-Provence

Shopping in France comes with its own set of unspoken rules and practical quirks that differ from other countries. By familiarizing yourself with the local shopping etiquette and store policies, you can ensure a much smoother and more enjoyable experience. Whether you are looking for the freshest produce or trying to avoid the checkout rush, these practical tips will help you navigate the aisles like a local.

Bring Your Own Bags and Weigh Your Produce
In France, single-use plastic bags are largely banned, and even paper bags often come at a small charge. Always bring sturdy reusable shopping bags or a chariot (shopping trolley) if you are walking. In the produce section, you are expected to bag your fruits and vegetables and use the digital scales to weigh them and print a price sticker before heading to the register.

Check the Opening Hours Carefully
Unlike some countries where 24-hour shopping is standard, French supermarkets have strict trading laws. Most stores close on Sundays, and many close for a long lunch break between 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM, though larger hypermarkets usually stay open. Always check the specific Sunday and holiday hours, as stores often close entirely or open only in the morning before a public holiday.

Understand the Checkout Process
The checkout experience in France is generally fast-paced, and you are expected to bag your own groceries. Cashiers do not typically bag items for you. Additionally, if you are using a credit card with a chip, you may be asked for a PIN, as swipe-and-sign is less common. For a quick trip, look for the self-checkout (caisses automatiques) which often has a shorter queue.

Don’t Overlook the Store Brand (Marque Repère)
To save money without sacrificing quality, look for the supermarket’s own brand, such as E.Leclerc’s "Marque Repère" or Carrefour’s "Reflets de France." These products are often produced by the same manufacturers as name brands but sold at a significantly lower price. They can be an excellent way to stock up on pantry staples like olive oil, honey, and canned goods.

Separate Your Food and Non-Food Items
If you are shopping at a hypermarket like Carrefour or E.Leclerc, be aware that the main checkout lines handle groceries, while certain electronics or large household items might need to be paid for in their specific department. If you buy an item from the tech section, you often pay for it right there before moving on to the food aisles to avoid issues at the main registers.

The supermarket scene in Aix-en-Provence is remarkably diverse, offering everything from budget-conscious bulk buying to high-end organic delicacies. Choosing the right store often depends on your location relative to the city center and your specific culinary needs. While the large hypermarkets on the outskirts offer unbeatable variety and pricing for a big weekly shop, the smaller urban stores provide the convenience and speed necessary for daily life in the historic center.

Ultimately, the best supermarket for you will align with your lifestyle. If you value organic and local sourcing, the specialist stores will likely win your loyalty. If you are feeding a family or preparing for a long stay, the extensive selections at the larger chains are indispensable. Whichever you choose, shopping here offers a genuine taste of Provençal life, where food quality is celebrated and the weekly market run is a ritual rather than a chore.
