12 Best Shopping Spots in Avignon

Nestled in the heart of Provence, Avignon is a city where history seeps from every limestone wall and the scent of lavender drifts through medieval streets. While the Palais des Papes and the Pont d’Avignon dominate the tourist trail, the city’s true soul is often found in its vibrant commercial arteries. For the discerning traveler, shopping here is not just a transaction; it is an immersive cultural experience.

Understanding the local retail landscape transforms a simple trip into a treasure hunt. From the covered markets humming with the chatter of local vendors to quiet side streets housing master craftsmen, Avignon offers a distinct alternative to the homogenized high street. The city rewards those who wander slowly, allowing the eye to catch a glimpse of Provençal fabric or the glint of antique silver.

The local government and merchant associations have worked diligently to preserve the authenticity of the city center. Strict zoning laws have kept large chain stores on the periphery, ensuring that the intra-muros area remains a haven for independent boutiques and family-run businesses. This commitment to heritage means that shopping in Avignon supports the local economy directly.

Visitors often find that the best purchases here are the ones that tell a story of the region. Whether it is a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a bar of olive oil soap from Marseille, or a piece of pottery glazed in the colors of the Luberon, the goods reflect the terroir. The city serves as a gateway to the best of Southern French craftsmanship.

Timing and location are crucial for the optimal retail experience. The rhythm of the city shifts with the seasons, with summer bringing extended hours and winter offering quieter, more personalized service. Navigating the cobblestone lanes with a clear strategy ensures you do not miss the hidden gems tucked away from the main squares.

Below is a curated guide to the most compelling retail destinations in the city, ranging from bustling food halls to serene antique districts. These locations have been selected for their quality, authenticity, and ability to provide a genuine taste of Provençal life.

I come from Asia and am a tourist. I really like this shopping mall; the products are of good quality and reasonably priced. There is also a supermarket and restaurants inside, which is very convenient. The staff are kind and friendly, and they have helped me a lot, making me fall in love with this city.
Gergely Kiss★★★★★
As a tourist this was a fascinating experience - unlike our plazas, this one is outside of town and more like a select collection of specialized shops (especially the bakery). Products are visibly high-end and presented beautifully, staff is welcoming and kind. Wonderful!

Large collection of designer bags, which are friendly priced during the sale. Their own purse brand is of good quality. In addition to purses they also sell clothes in a wide range of brands that have their own "shop-in-shops". It is our usual stop during shopping trips and one of our favorite stores in this shopping mall.

I was expecting a typical Galeties Lafayette department store, this wasn’t! It is a department store of men’s, ladies’ and children’s fashion. Unfortunately I was looking for a duvet!! A huge clothing selection however, easy parking and not at all crowded.

It’s visit 07/06/26 Wow It’s an enormous shopping centre the Aushopping Avignon Nord very impressive indeed , It does seems to have everything you’d possibly ever need though . Unfortunately we only arrived 30 minutes before closing at 12:30 on a Sunday , has tourist we didn’t know this beforehand . The whole place inside was absolutely beautiful and clean . The car parks were all newly tarmaced and marked out . The only thing I could pick fault at was the lack of directions to the main entrance. We came into a huge car park after following directions from the sat nav . We then noticed a fence surrounding the building and it looked like building work was being carried out so we drove up and down this car park looking for a way in . Then we decided to leave then we came across an entrance purely by accident. Which we’re glad about , we shall be back in the couple of days to explore more of Aushopping Avignon Nord .

Shopping center is at current a building site and while there are a good number of shops open the mall itself isn’t great

Lovely place, was under a major redesign and build when we visited but you could see what it was going to be, looks really good and delivered excellent produce at very reasonable prices
Thomas Rehrmann★★★★☆
We went there to get some things to bring back Home. We went there some times before the year's but we did not get that size of Centre Commercial with some many shops. From our feeling one of the biggest centre commercial in the south of France, maybe the one at Nice stadium is the same size but this Auchan shopping center is wonderful. You will get anything there and the prices are good, also because of the auchan own brand. We will come back next year and see what's new.

Centre commercial Mistral 7 is a fantastic shopping centre with an incredible range of stores. It seemed to have everything you could possibly need all under one roof, from everyday essentials to speciality items. The centre was clean, well laid out, and easy to navigate, with plenty of choice for shopping and dining. A great place to spend a few hours, and I'll definitely be visiting again.

The quality of the fresh food are really good. We enjoy the delicious melons, seafood, and fruits from this supermarket. Also, the staffs are very friendly even we cannot speak French.

It’s a good shopping center and it includes the biggest Auchan Hypermarché in Avignon. I like the Christmas and other occasional themes in the place.
Maximilian T★★★★☆
Very large hypermarket, containing a wide array or products from clothing and tech to regular groceries. The prices are as expected of a large hypermarket fluctuating between reasonable and expensive. Staff is kind and helpful. The location of the Auchan also improves its rating as it is close to a variety of other stores, such as clothing stores, food stalls, and hair salons.

Really nice market in Avignon. We have seen a couple now dans la sud de France which seem a bit manufactured but this was lovely and authentic I think the trick seems to be to look for the ones that close at 1400. Anything that stays open later seems to be a bit formulaic. Anyway. Enough jawing. Here’s a few pics.

I was pleasantly surprised by my sunglasses: they're lightweight and practical. The sun protection is effective and the design is nice, which means I wear them often, even in the city. As for the belt, I appreciated the quality of the leather and its everyday comfort. I'm happy with my purchase and I recommend Beaucoup Store to anyone looking for good value for money.

A loyal customer for quite some time now, I absolutely love this boutique! The collections are always top-notch, trendy, and high-quality, with something for every style. The team is incredibly welcoming, warm, and offers excellent advice. Bonus: I was recently invited to an after-work event organized by the boutique, and it was truly a wonderful time! Relaxed atmosphere, friendly conversations, little gifts, and sneak peeks of new arrivals… It's a real pleasure to be part of this lovely community. Thank you for this thoughtful gesture; it makes all the difference!

The team makes its customers feel special; it's a truly enjoyable experience! Thank you again to Aurélie for everything! I highly recommend this boutique; the customer service is exemplary! You guys are the best!

We discovered Beaucoup Store at Polygone completely by chance, and what a wonderful surprise! From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a smile by Stéphanie, the manager, who is truly fantastic. She takes the time to listen, advise, and share her passion for her products, making the visit even more enjoyable. The store is superb, very well laid out, with a varied and original selection that allows you to find both beautiful, trendy pieces and unique gift ideas. You can tell there's a real focus on quality and careful selection. A great find that we highly recommend! We'll definitely be back.
Souméya Soumalisa★☆☆☆☆
The shop doesn't accept returns; you have to choose something else, even though there aren't many options. I asked when I bought the items, thinking I had 30 days for returns, but the sales assistant told me it was 10 days, without correcting me, that it was only for exchanges, not returns. I should have checked the receipt, but oh well, it'll teach me to trust. The problem is, I'm not even satisfied with the items! Furthermore, it was advertised as 50% off, but I paid €43 for a dress and €44 for a skirt, so without the 50% discount, the dress would be €86? Yet when I looked on their online store, it's €34! It's 2024, and don't you know that a satisfied customer is a loyal customer? This is my first experience with this shop, and it will be my last.

A charming little shop where all kinds of Provençal items are represented. I treated myself to a very pretty Provençal cicada in lavender, and the friendly shopkeeper even offered me batteries so that this lovely ornament could play its charming little tune. I bought the most BEAUTIFUL, high quality, pure lavandula angustifolia lavender oil I have ever tried in 2015 from this shop for the first time. It is now 2026, I still order it online and I am still using it until today on a daily basis, because this is the best lavender oil in the world in my opinion, and it has SO MANY countless uses…. If you like lavender, you will LOVE this lavender oil because it smells absolutely amazing! Use it within the expiration date, though - because just like all things natural, the smell is only good when it is still fresh. I had been buying so many types from all sorts of sources in Australia, and nothing compares to the quality of this oil from this brand. It is therapeutic-grade, so I have been able to use it safely without damaging my skin (before I tried this, one of the Australian bottles damaged my skin!). So never use any other lavender oil except this one. I invited myself on an impromptu trip to Avignon with Father Joe from Perth in 2015, and one day when he went to the Palais des Papes, I found this shop online and asked my husband to bring me here. Father Joe and my husband are the angels in my life sent by God, and so is this lavender oil ❤️❤️❤️
ZIYUAN Wong (YON)★★★★★
This store is absolutely fantastic! The staff were incredibly welcoming and patiently helped us try out many products without any sign of impatience. They answered all our questions and provided beautifully wrapped packages for our purchases. The product quality here is exceptional. For example, the lavender soap has a noticeably better scent compared to other nearby shops, and although the price is higher, it’s definitely worth it. The lavender candle has a rich fragrance, clearly showcasing the quality of the lavender used. I will definitely visit again if I have the chance.

I needed to purchase a gift for my neighbor who took me to the airport. I found this shop on TripAdvisor. The woman who greeted me at the shop was extremely patient and informative. I ended up getting not only some gifts for my neighbor, but many items for myself. The prices were more than fair and the products outstanding. This boutique is a must on a visit to Avignon.

Tips for Shopping in Avignon

To make the most of your retail exploration in the Papal City, it is helpful to understand the local customs and logistics. A little preparation ensures that you can navigate the markets with confidence and secure the best quality goods without paying inflated tourist prices.

Respect the Siesta and Sunday Closures
Avignon operates on a distinctly Southern French schedule. Many independent boutiques close for a long lunch between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, and the majority of shops are closed entirely on Sundays. Plan your shopping for mid-morning or late afternoon on weekdays, and use Sunday as a day for sightseeing rather than retail.

Bring Your Own Bag and Cash
France has largely phased out single-use plastic bags, so carrying a sturdy tote is essential, especially if you plan to buy fresh produce or heavy bottles of wine. While credit cards are widely accepted, market vendors and smaller artisans often prefer cash for small transactions under ten euros.

Look for the "Artisan d’Art" Label
To ensure you are buying genuine local craftsmanship rather than imported souvenirs, look for official labels. The "Artisan d’Art" designation guarantees that the item was made by a skilled professional in their own workshop, offering a level of quality and authenticity that mass-produced trinkets lack.

Taste Before You Buy
At the covered markets, such as Les Halles, vendors are generally very generous with samples. Do not be shy about asking to taste a tapenade, a slice of saucisson, or a piece of cheese before committing. This is not considered rude; it is an expected part of the negotiation and purchasing ritual in Provence.

Utilize the Tax Refund
If you are visiting from outside the European Union, remember that you are eligible for a VAT refund on purchases exceeding a certain threshold (usually around 100 euros in a single store on the same day). Ask the retailer for a "détaxe" form and have it validated at the airport or border when leaving the EU.

Wandering through Avignon’s shopping districts offers a deeper connection to the Provençal way of life than any museum tour can provide. It is an opportunity to engage with the people who define the region’s culture, from the cheesemongers aging their wheels in damp cellars to the weavers creating textiles that echo the patterns of centuries past. Every purchase made here carries a memory of the narrow streets and the warm Mediterranean sun.

As you pack your bags for the journey home, the items you have gathered will serve as tactile reminders of your time in the Vaucluse. Whether it is the weight of a ceramic bowl or the aroma of dried herbs, these acquisitions will allow you to relive the magic of Avignon long after you have left its ancient walls behind.
