Perched on the edge of the Cantabrian Sea, Gijón is a city where the salty breeze mingles with the scent of fresh seafood and simmering stews. This Asturian coastal hub has long been defined by its maritime heritage, from the bustling activity of its historic fishing port to the culinary traditions passed down through generations of seafarers. For locals and visitors alike, dining here is not just about eating; it is a way of connecting with the rhythm of the ocean.
The local gastronomy is anchored by the bounty of the Bay of Biscay. Cold, nutrient-rich waters yield an extraordinary variety of fish and shellfish, including hake, sea bass, spider crab, and the prized percebes (goose barnacles). While the region is famous for its hearty fabada, the true test of a Gijón kitchen often lies in how it handles a simple piece of grilled fish or a plate of mariscos.
Navigating the city’s dining scene can be overwhelming, with options ranging from traditional sidrerías to modern, upscale marisquerías. The best establishments balance respect for raw ingredients with the distinctive character of Asturian hospitality. Understanding the difference between a casual seafood tavern and a formal dining room is key to finding the experience you are after.
Price points and ambiance vary significantly between the old fishing quarter of Cimavilla and the elegant promenade of San Lorenzo. Some of the most memorable meals are found in unassuming locales where the menu changes daily based on the morning’s catch. Others offer refined tasting menus that elevate local seafood to high art.
This guide focuses on establishments that consistently deliver freshness, authenticity, and value. Whether you are craving a plate of grilled razor clams, a traditional caldereta, or the best oysters in town, these venues represent the pinnacle of Gijón’s maritime cuisine. Each has been selected for its reputation among locals and its dedication to sourcing the finest Asturian products.
We have considered atmosphere, location, and the specific specialties that make each restaurant unique. From the rustic charm of a cider house to the polished service of a fine dining room, there is a table for every palate and occasion. Prepare to explore the deep flavors of the Cantabrian coast.
Below is a curated selection of the best seafood restaurants in Gijón, arranged to help you find the perfect spot for your next meal.

We went there waited in the door asked if they have table for 3 of us in spanish ( even we are not spanish speaker we learn to ask that) they look at us ignore keep working. Came big local groups they are fine to answer and talk. Again we ask they reply something like its very busy. So we waited for like 15 minutes. They seems dont want us as a client keep ignoring so we gave up and left .

This is the best restaurant I have been to in my five days in Asturias. Food was 5 stars, service was 5 stars. Price was very good for the abundance and quality of the food. They have a variety of set menus, as well as an abundant selection of a la carte plates. I definitely recommend and know that you will be satisfied.

This restaurant has the best seafood Paella we ever had. The portion is massive, and the flavor is out of this world.

Great paella with generous portions. The service was great and we made it it across the language barrier, very local feel.

Nestled in the heart of Gijón, El Restallu offers a culinary journey unlike any other. My recent dining experience at this quaint restaurant left me in awe, particularly after indulging in their exquisite seafood paella.
From the moment we stepped through the door, the ambiance captivated us with its charming Spanish charm. Warm lighting, rustic decor, and the inviting aroma of spices set the stage for an unforgettable meal.
The service at El Restallu was impeccable. Attentive staff members guided us through the menu with expert recommendations and genuine hospitality, ensuring a seamless dining experience from start to finish.
But it was the seafood paella that stole the show. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, with perfectly cooked rice infused with the essence of saffron, nestled amidst a generous medley of fresh seafood. From succulent shrimp to tender calamari and plump mussels, every ingredient was a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality.
As we savored each mouthful, we couldn’t help but marvel at the culinary mastery behind this dish. The harmonious blend of flavors and textures left us speechless, with each component complementing the other in perfect harmony.
Throughout the evening, we found ourselves lost in the culinary bliss that El Restallu had to offer. From the first tantalizing aroma to the last satisfying bite, every moment was a testament to the restaurant’s dedication to excellence.
In conclusion, if you’re craving an unparalleled seafood experience, look no further than El Restallu. With impeccable service, charming ambiance, and a seafood paella that’s truly a work of art, this hidden gem deserves every bit of praise it receives.

An absolute gem, a highly recommended great quality seafood restaurant. An honest family business, friendly and professional atmosphere.

The staff here is really nice but the atmosphere really gives airport vibes... The biggest issue though is that the food is ridiculously expensive for this area and it isn't particularly better than any other seafood place around town.

The seafood are very fresh and are cooked the best flavor of it. And the price was very reasonable. Highly recommend

There is no menu available here but if you like fish and sea food you will love it here. The chef will come to your table and explain what is available on the day. We had a huge platter of sea food that included prawns, mussels, clams and scallops. Followed by grilled Turbot and Grouper with potatoes. A dessert, bottle of wine, coffee and an after dinner drink were all included at €95. An absolute bargain.

A lovely refined interior in the dining room with very friendly service, unfortunately, the food did not match the atmosphere and service. While the gambas to start were absolutely delicious, the steak did not taste great and was priced at a premium. Similarly, the dessert was not enjoyable as it had a strange alcohol taste that did not match the marshmallow. The food was not terrible, it just was far too expensive for what was offered. As mentioned before though, the service was lovely!

I spent 6 days in Gijon and came back here two times for the iberico pork. The place is charming. The food is amazing. Sit at the bar and let the bartender recommend things to eat. They have snail (like) things on the bar for appetizing. I had to try! I don’t need to mention they have cider.

We tried to find a good seafood restaurant in this city but unfortunately all the restaurants were so full. We decide to have dinner here and tried to understand the menu but the waiter keep pushing us to buy fresh whole fish and nothing else to explain ok fine. They came show one fish then i can see they go change the fish didnt get why but when the dish came the fish inside was light green and smelly with bad flavor. Please dont try to rob the tourists please. And ya at the end came a big bill of fish which we didnt even know what it was. Tourists are human also not just to rob

This might have been the freshest seafood we have had, period. We had experienced quite the wait as it was Friday and we didn’t have reservations - they promised us a table and kept us entertained with a couple of ciders. When we finally got our table the wait was rather short and the dishes, while kept very simple, were gorgeous. The Salpicón was sublime, the Razor Clams were to die for and the Crab was one of the freshest we’ve had. The prices are relatively high - but go there, it’s worth it!

Honestly one of the best fish dinners I have ever eaten (and I live in the Canary islands so am no stranger to good seafood. Look, the prices initially gave me pause for thought, but the service was amazing and food on another level. Worth every penny

A really lovely experience! Chef Roguez' menu for €60 was full of great flavours from the sea. I fully enjoyed the hearty depth to each dish and the atmosphere inside the restaurant was lovely, it felt as if I was at the beach with all the decoration. We went on a quiet night, with only one other table seated. As such, the service was great and friendly. Our waiter always had a smile and explained each dish well. They provide English menus if required, which is also appreciated. The only dish I didn't particularly enjoy was the red pepper one, as the red pepper dominated every other flavour. I also appreciated the complimentary coffee at the end of the meal, it was much appreciated. There was a minor mix-up at the end of the meal, where the bill said €180 instead of €80 but this was quickly rectified by the staff and I appreciated this honesty. I will certainly come back in the future to try out some different menus during different seasons!
Wendy Caputo★★★★★
Very thoughtful with the food from concept, to preparation, to presentation and taste. The sustainability and freshness of the food were also top tier.
It is an experience not a meal. The food is delicate and delicious that impacts all 5 senses. The staff is SUPER friendly, knowledgeable and care about the experience and food. They take pride in their work.
We walked in and ordered dishes off the menu - did not do the set menu. Also - the gluten-free bread was excellent!
We look forward to returning!!

Food was salty, seafood was not fresh, super overpriced for what it is. 102 euros for 2 appetizers and two sharing dishes that were all super small.
Claims were not fresh and had a smell. Shrimps had sand and also not fresh. Price not worth it at all.

My wife and I went to Abarike for our anniversary and we couldn't have chosen a better place. The food was delicious, the service was great and it had just the right ambiance for a romantic dinner. We started with bread and a delicious herb butter and complimentary dish of anchovy and raw fish (I forgot what kind) that was very good. I had Yellow Chili Ceviche Oysters that were so fresh and tasty. Next we had Blue Lobster lettuce wraps and Scallops, both were very delicious, very fresh and like everything made with a fusion of incredible flavors and attention to detail. My entree was Spider Crab Chile Stew, very unique dish, very very delicious and my wife had one of their featured fish on the menu and she thoroughly loved it. Everything looked like a piece of art and I almost didn't want to eat any of the dishes because of this. Presentation was great! The staff made excellent recommendations for wine pairings for our food. Abarike is good for diners with Gluten Intolerance which is always important for my celiac wife. Because I couldn't tell if they had GF dessert on their menu I wrote the restaurant in advance and asked them to please have a GF dessert for my wife that's not sorbet, ice cream or gelato and they assured me they would have somethin special for both of us and it was an incredible cheese cake and they had a Spanish Brandy in the house I had never had before that was the perfect compliment to the dessert, Solera Gran Reserva, Barrel Select, Brandy Peinado, aged 12 years. Thank you to the chef and staff for being a part of our anniversary and giving us a truly amazing dinner and anniversary experience.
The Mussi★★★★★
Abarike is an absolute gem among fish restaurants! The ambiance is delightful, complemented by an attentive and friendly staff who make every visit feel special. The menu offers a tantalizing array of freshly prepared fish dishes, each bursting with flavor and expertly crafted. From the exquisite presentation to the delectable taste, Abarike truly ensures an unforgettable dining experience. Highly recommended for all seafood enthusiasts!

Sérgio De Sousa★★★☆☆
The server did not warn us about the portion sizes and induced us into getting way more food than what we would need. We got food for like 6 people. And he still tried to suggest we order starters... very sad behaviour.
The Cachopo Diamante was good but not great. The inside was too chewy. The fries are not good. They taste like boiled potatoes, basically. The cachopo can feed easily 2 to 3 people.
Then we got the Meat Fire Mix
The meat was cooked nicely. Nothing to add here expect they come with the same terrible fries and the fries portion is insanely small. It feeds 4 people easily.
The dessert is just bad. Came with like 50cent supermarket strawberry ice cream which ruined it. The cake itself it not bad!
The cider experience is nice and the staff is generally really good expect the first one that made us the ridiculous upsell.

The best seafood and service we've had in our trip in northern Spain. I really appreciate how patient the servers were with explaining the menu. Highly recommend this restaurant

This is a popular local hangout known for its vibrant atmosphere and high-quality fresh seafood. I always begin my visit with the calamari plancha, featuring tender squid grilled to perfection with a touch of lemon and herbs, paired with a crisp sidra cider to complement the flavors. Additionally, I recommend ordering the gambas plancha, flavorful grilled shrimp seasoned with garlic and spices. Give it a try—you will truly love this place.

Loved the local flair and the taste of local delicacies. We particularly enjoyed the white tuna (bonito), in season during the months of July and August, and the squid (calamar). But every other dish was very good and fresh tasting.

Definitely one of Gijón's best restaurants! I've dined here twice in the past year and both occasions were to the same great standard. I hope to see V. Crespo back in the Michelin guide this year as they certainly deserve it, the quality of their food is on par, and indeed exceeds many currently on the guide in the region. On my initial visit I tried the croquetas which were the best I've ever had, along with the oxtail which was stunning and a delicious dessert. On my second occasion, which was recently, I tried the tasting menu, in which every dish was delicious and I couldn't find a dish I didn't enjoy. For €65, it's well worth the price. My favourite dish on the tasting menu was probably the venison, it was certainly the best venison I have ever tried. The service was also pleasant and friendly. The restaurant was completely packed, even on a Thursday evening, and so I recommend you secure a reservation in advance to avoid disappointment. I will definitely be back to V. Crespo as in terms of the price-to-quality ratio, it is perhaps the best restaurant in Gijón.
Masoud Hosseini★★★★★
I’ve long been on a quest to discover the perfect arroz con bogavante, believing it would take the touch of a grandmother in her own kitchen to truly achieve it. While I still think the search may never truly end, the one I enjoyed here was far beyond anything I had imagined — rich in flavor, beautifully presented, and an absolute pleasure to savor.
If I may offer one gentle note, the seasoning leaned slightly towards the salty side — perhaps just to my personal taste, though my two dining companions shared the same impression. Having spent 11 years working in kitchens and the hospitality industry, I understand the challenge of creating dishes that delight every palate. It’s not always possible to please everyone, yet a subtle adjustment could elevate this already exceptional dish to perfection.
The service was nothing short of outstanding. The staff’s warmth, attentiveness, and genuine care for our table made the experience truly memorable. My heartfelt thanks to the chef and the entire team for their dedication to ensuring every guest leaves both satisfied and smiling.

We visited V. Crespo restaurant in June 2022 with some members of my family. It was late in the night but they received us. We ordered fish mainly (Bogavante and Lubina) and a quick entrance (Salpicón de Bogabante). Food was on point! Fresh, executed at the moment and quality was impecable! I would highly recommend this restaurant without a doubt!

El Arroz con Bugre muy decepcionante! para un Restaurante que se hace llamar Marisquería.

Overall, we really enjoyed the experience and left quite happy.
We started with some delicious fried fresh calamari, although the portion was a bit small for the price.
For our main course, we ordered a ribeye steak from Friesian beef, which was fantastic, perfectly cooked and cooked to perfection, accompanied by delicious homemade fries.
The desserts were also a great choice; both the chocolate fondant and the llambión (a type of Spanish cake) were excellent.
The service from the waiters was very good—friendly and efficient—and the atmosphere was very pleasant, relaxed, and with great views.
We'll be back and we highly recommend it!
Tips for Choosing the Best Seafood Experience in Gijón
To make the most of your culinary journey, it helps to understand a few local customs and dining practices. The way seafood is ordered, served, and priced in Asturias can differ from other parts of Spain or Europe. Keeping these practical considerations in mind will ensure you enjoy the freshest offerings without any surprises on your bill.
- Ask About the Daily Catch: The best dishes are often not on the printed menu. Always ask your server for the "pescado del día" or "fuera de carta" options, which reflect what was landed at the fish market that morning.
- Understand Market Pricing: Many premium items, such as percebes, anglerfish, or large spider crabs, are priced by weight (e.g., €/kg) rather than a fixed portion price. Always confirm the weight and price of the piece before it is cooked to avoid an unexpectedly high bill.
- Embrace the Sidrería Culture: While not strictly seafood restaurants, traditional sidrerías often serve excellent grilled fish and seafood. Ordering a bottle of natural Asturian cider and watching the escanciado (pouring ritual) enhances the local dining experience.
- Reserve Ahead for Weekends: Gijón is a popular weekend destination for Asturians and tourists alike. The top seafood houses fill up quickly, especially for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays, so booking a table a day or two in advance is highly recommended.
- Check for Menú del Día: If you are dining on a budget, many high-quality restaurants offer a fixed-price lunch menu (menú del día) on weekdays. This often includes a starter, a fresh fish main course, dessert, and a drink at a very reasonable price, offering excellent value.
The relationship between Gijón and the sea is visceral, and it is best understood through its food. Dining at one of these establishments is an opportunity to taste the landscape, the climate, and the hard work of the local fishermen who brave the Atlantic waters. It is an experience that goes beyond simple sustenance.
As you wander through the cobbled streets of Cimavilla or along the modern marina, let your senses guide you. The sound of cider being poured, the sight of glistening ice displays, and the aroma of grilled garlic and parsley are all invitations to sit down and savor the moment. In Gijón, the ocean is always on the menu.
