12 Best Restaurants Near Mercado de San Miguel

Tucked just behind the Plaza Mayor, the Mercado de San Miguel is Madrid’s most famous gourmet market, drawing visitors with its gleaming Art Nouveau ironwork and counters piled high with tapas, oysters, and caviar. While the market itself is a sensory spectacle, savvy travelers know that the surrounding neighborhood of Los Austrias hides some of the city’s most rewarding tables. Stepping just a few minutes away from the crowds unlocks a deeper, more authentic taste of Madrid’s culinary soul.

The area around the market is a dense tapestry of historic taverns, modern bistros, and family-run institutions that have been perfecting their recipes for generations. Whether you are craving a life-changing slice of tortilla, a plate of jamón carved by a master cortador, or a modern twist on Castilian stew, the options can feel overwhelming. The proximity to major landmarks like the Royal Palace and Puerta del Sol means this zone is heavily trafficked, making it difficult to separate genuine quality from tourist traps.

This guide is designed to cut through the noise. We have walked these cobblestone streets, pulled up stools at marble counters, and sampled the menus so you can dine with confidence. The selection below prioritizes culinary integrity, consistency, and that intangible sense of place that makes a meal in Madrid memorable.

You will find a mix of historic tabernas that demand a vermouth on tap and contemporary spaces pushing the boundaries of Spanish gastronomy. From the perfect crispy croqueta to slow-roasted suckling pig, these establishments represent the best of the barrio. Each recommendation is located within a comfortable walking distance, usually less than ten minutes from the market’s glass doors.

The best way to approach this list is not as a checklist, but as a culinary map. Use it to find a spot for a pre-market snack, a long, wine-fueled lunch, or a late-night bite after the market closes. Remember that Spanish dining times run late; lunch often starts at 1:30 PM, and dinner rarely begins before 8:30 PM.

Many of these spots are small and do not take reservations, especially for tapas at the bar. Arriving early or being willing to wait a few minutes is part of the experience. Trust the locals, order the house specialty, and don’t be afraid to point at what the person next to you is having.

Below is the curated list of the absolute best dining experiences within a short stroll of the Mercado de San Miguel.

The location and ambience make this a worthwhile visit. Our server was very nice. The food was ok. The octopus and steak were good. But the fish and pork were not very good. They were covered in sauces that weren’t great.

One of our best dining experiences in Madrid! The ambience was chic and fun, the service was exceptional, and the dishes were delicious. Fabio, the owner was super attentive, kind, and hilarious. He treated my husband, me and our three girls to a yummy dessert. Pablo was adorable. Get the sausage, it was fabulous!

I found Amicis on a random google search for a good restaurant to house a group of 14 on a hen do with the hope of a set menu and drinks package for ease of an evening. I emailed Maria who was very informative and got us booked in for their set menu and drinks package (for a very reasonable price per head) in their private space. When we arrived, the staff were polite and attentive from the start, the food was absolutely beautiful and they even let us use the space with our own music for later in the night whilst we danced with cocktails! Genuinely, each and every person in our party loved it and would 100% recommend for anyone, especially bigger groups like a hen do! Thank you so much!
Ana Beatriz Silva★★★★★
We had a great experience at Amicis. The staff were genuinely friendly and attentive, which made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The food was excellent, well prepared, and full of flavor. A special mention goes to the dessert: the Tarta de la Buela with mascarpone cream. It was absolutely delicious. Perfect balance. We’ll definitely be back and would highly recommend it.

We had a very good meal there, with great cocktails and very tasty food. The food wasn’t as inventive as I expected but it tastes delicious and portions were great. Sitting outside on the terrace is a must, make sure to book a table a few hours before you go. The terrace is quiet, which is incredible for the otherwise bustling neighborhood!

If you are looking for the perfect paella when visiting Madrid this is the place! The rice was cooked on point in every ways: moist yet just the right crunchiness. The flavor was fresh and just the right balance between salty and sweetness; sweetness from the fresh seafood ingredient. Sangria was so good too. Harold was the server and he was so nice and friendly! Definitely make you very welcomed. I would definitely visit this place again and again.

Stopped by Casa Garsia and had a great experience. The one-person paella was surprisingly flavorful and perfectly cooked — not something you always find in smaller portions. Paired it with a cold beer, which made it even better. The atmosphere is really cozy and relaxed, the kind of place where you can just sit back and enjoy your meal without rushing. Definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby.
Ana Orozco★★★★★
This place had amazing service and food! It was our first time eating paella since visiting Spain, and it was 😍. I ordered the vegetable paella, and my partner ordered the paella with duck, and our kids had two orders of octopus tentacles. Our server, Harold, was very attentive and friendly, and made us feel right at home. We will absolutely be back here during our next visit to Madrid!

We randomly walked into this restaurant and it did not disappoint! It was a homemade meal—very delicious! I had the baked chicken with rice. So light on the stomach, and the sauce was fantastic! Lovely staff and owner! 10/10 recommend!

Amazing and I def recommend. I’ve been in the city for a week and I go every day. so worth it!! Lots of food selection, and everything we tried was amazing, whether it was food or drinks. The people there are so nice and the whole atmosphere is great. It’s always full, but the crowd is friendly and you will still get your food and find a place to enjoy it. If you’re in Madrid, you should go!

If you are looking for an unforgettable culinary experience right in the heart of Madrid, Mercado de San Miguel is an absolute must-visit. Housed in a stunning historic wrought-iron market hall just steps from Plaza Mayor, this lively food destination is a paradise for food lovers. What makes this place truly stand out is the incredible diversity of options under one roof. You can easily hop from stall to stall sampling crispy croquetas, freshly carved Jamón Ibérico, gourmet seafood skewers, aged Spanish cheeses, and sweet churros—all paired with a glass of crisp local wine or chilled sangria. Every single stall offers a delicious window into Spain’s rich culinary landscape. The energy inside is electric. Bustling, warm, and filled with an infectious crowd of travelers and locals alike, the atmosphere creates a fun, social dining experience you won't forget. While prices are a little higher than a quiet neighborhood tapas bar, the premium quality of the ingredients, exceptional presentation, and prime historic location make it completely acceptable and well worth the extra Euros. Don’t leave Madrid without spending an afternoon exploring this iconic food hall!
Fiona★★☆☆☆
It’s is aesthetically pleasing but ultimately feels like a tourist trap. The market is much smaller than expected and absolutely packed, even on a Monday afternoon. Everything is heavily overpriced. I paid €13 just for a single squid sandwich. It’s worth walking through quickly just to soak up the lively vibe and see the displays, but definitely save your money and grab a real meal elsewhere.

This place is heaven for a foodies! You can try a little bit of everything. Portions are small but it allows you to taste everything. I was really excited about trying the tuna at the one of the back corners but it looked and tasted like it had been sitting put for a while. I also had a spicy beef empanada and I have to find the spice. The flavor was good nothing I hadn't had in Mexico or at home before. I did try a spicy brioche, so tasty. There is a spritz bar and the Hugo Spritz are refreshingly tasty especially during a Euro Summer.
noam Israel★★★★★
Absolutely amazing! A fantastic place to enjoy delicious, authentic Spanish food. The prices are very reasonable, making it affordable for everyone. It can get quite crowded, but there are standing tables where you can enjoy your meal, and that’s part of the experience. I highly recommend visiting after touring the Royal Palace since it’s just a short walk away. Definitely worth a stop!

We dropped in for a snack because we heard they had the best mushrooms in Madrid. It's true. They've een grilling mushrooms since 1964 and now do over a ton per week. The caps are filled with Chorizo, garlic and parsley with some olive oil. They serve each mushrooms with two toothpicks you squeeze together to pick them up to eat. We also tried their roasted pepper with tuna, like the mushrooms they were excellent. The restaurant is located in an old building that served an one of Madrid's prisons. It then became a winery before the current restaurant in 1964. Definitely a great snack opportunity.
Manja Petrov★★★★☆
A very cozy, family-style café specializing in mushrooms, and they truly do them well. The atmosphere is warm and lively, though moderately loud at times, and the service can be a bit slow — but the food makes it worthwhile. We tried the mushrooms with ham, their signature dish, and they were absolutely delicious — perfectly cooked, flavorful, and clearly the highlight of the visit. We also ordered Padrón peppers, similar to shishito peppers, which were simple, well-prepared, and very enjoyable. Overall, a charming spot with tasty food and a welcoming vibe. A great place to visit if you’re a fan of mushrooms and traditional Spanish flavors.
Cc Cc★★☆☆☆
I tried their mushroom dish and it wasn’t really to my taste. The mushrooms seemed fresh, but I found the flavor quite mild and less seasoned than I personally prefer. I can see that others may enjoy this style, but it didn’t quite work for me. The atmosphere is quite nice
Sasa Radenkovic★★★★★
Very fast service, fastest yet in Madrid. We had some mushrooms, squid rings and chorizo. The sausage was really good as well as the muschrooms, and the squid rings not so much. It wasnt expencive tho, we paid 41 euros for all that and one drink. Mushroom portion is kinda small, maybe its for one person, but combined with something else it becomes enough. I would recommend you going here because it isn't your typical food place.
ohad perry★★☆☆☆
very old and well-known spot right in the heart of Madrid, but overall a bit underwhelming. The food wasn’t bad, but definitely not great—very basic, medium-quality dishes with nothing particularly memorable. Given that, the 4.4 rating feels somewhat overrated. Service and atmosphere were fine, but nothing stood out there either. It’s one of those places you visit more for the location and history than for the actual culinary experience. Overall, not a bad stop, but with so many great food options in Madrid, there are definitely better choices around.

The food was consistently on point, with well‑balanced flavours and careful preparation evident throughout the meal. The service was equally commendable—attentive, efficient, and delivered with professionalism. Thank you for an experience that met a high standard from start to finish. thank you Andrew for top man

This is my absolute fav spot that I’ve ever tried in Madrid. Not only was the paella and calamari 10/10, the service of the staff Andres and Sammy really made this dining experience so memorable. They were not only amazing servers and conversational but also so helpful and kind. I would come back to Madrid just to eat here again and get this wonderful service from them. Truly a hidden gem. You must come here and ask for them!

Tasty food, very friendly staff. Everything was fresh. Waiting time is maybe longer but if you want quality its worth to wait. I really had a very nice and tasty meal. I tried 3 different dishes and a glass of house red wine plus had a coffee.

We ordered a light lunch to refresh in the middle of the day of hectic sightseeing: platter of goat cheese, croquettes and prawn and hake balls. Food was good but we've tried better in Madrid.
Pratik Patel★★★★★
The limited vegetarian options in Mercado de San Miguel led us to this gem of a restaurant. Reasonably priced, amazing Aubergine dish, good portions, good beer. Plenty of local customers, not just tourists. Would also serve as a great stop for a few drinks at the bar...at least you can sit down .... unlike the Mercado de San Miguel!
Steve Martineau★★★★★
Fabulous food, out of the ordinary run of dishes being offered in the area. We really enjoyed the aubergines and the pasta dishes. It’s a hard working bar, and maybe lacking empathy for visitors like us. But worth a visit for the excellent food.

Very good. We reserved online (very easy). We mentioned to waitress we had visit planed and had only short time to eat. Service was supper quick. Salad with bacon is outstanding. Newer salad with goat cheeses is blue cheese

Juan Mosquera★★★★★
Prímital offers an excellent dining experience focused on quality over quantity. While the meat selection is somewhat limited, every option is prepared with outstanding ingredients and exceptional flavor. The quality more than makes up for the smaller menu. I recommend ordering your meat "al punto" (medium), as it brings out the best texture and flavor without being overcooked or undercooked. Don't worry if the meat arrives with very little seasoning—the salt is served on the side so you can season it to your own taste. One feature I really appreciated was the long communal table by the window, where you can bring your food and enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere. It's a great spot, especially if you're dining with friends or family. If you appreciate high-quality meat and a simple concept executed exceptionally well, Prímital is definitely worth a visit.
itsrizzy★★★★★
First time in Madrid and definitely the first time visiting Mercado de San Miguel. I tried the prrimital meat cut from Prrimital Street Meat, it was sensational. The best meat I’ve ever had. Cooked perfectly and combining with the sea salt.. chef kiss 😙👌🏼 Highly recommend!
Melissa Herzstein★★★★★
Amazing food, awesome service as well! The servers were so kind to us and the food was delicious! We got a royal w/ cheese burger and a slab of steak for two and they were all cooked to perfection. Can’t wait to come back to try more!
Dylan Hannah Sled★★★★★
Out of all the choices in the market we were instantly drawn in by steak board with peppers and it was absolutely delicious!!!! Friendly workers and delicious food. Thank you for a great experience!
JANE MICHELLE LOPEZ★★★★★
Absolutely incredible meal! My boys ordered the steak and the burger, and both of them agreed it was the best food they’ve ever had. The steak was cooked perfectly—tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The burger was huge, fresh, and packed with delicious toppings. As a parent, there’s nothing better than hearing your kids rave about a meal from the first bite to the last. Great food, great service, and an experience we’ll definitely remember. Highly recommend!

We had a great time here! It was a super hot day and they accommodated us inside with AC. The watermelon slushees were refreshing. The chicken platter and Paella seafood rice bowl was pretty good. They were quick getting our food out too
Christine Ruth★★★★☆
This is a lovely place to sit and take a breather. I enjoyed the gambas al ajillo and the mixed tuna salad. The shrimp were perfect!!
Mehri Moghadam★★★☆☆
We ordered two dishes: the fish and the steak. The steak was acceptable and cooked reasonably well, but the fish was disappointing — it did not seem fresh, had an unpleasant smell, and lacked proper flavor and quality, making it hard to enjoy. No sauce was included, and when we asked, a small packet was charged €1. Drinks were also overpriced compared to market prices. Overall, the experience was mixed, and the food quality did not justify the price.
Awesome Tron★☆☆☆☆
I should have looked at the reviews before coming, but the restaurant had a decent amount of people and gave it a chance. The staff is straight up rude and have no skills in customer service. This was my first time to this style of restaurant and I was reviewing the menu. I didn't have time to look over the menu because the waiters kept bothering about what I want to eat. If they had given me time to order I would have ordered. But within 10 minutes, I had been asked 6 times what I wanted to eat and that passed me off.
Tommy Plugor★★★★★
We stopped here after walking around the Royal Palace and Cathedral and had a great lunch. The staff was super friendly and funny and we loved the gambas! I personally found that even though many places make good gambas not all of them use a good oil/sauce that you can dip your bread into, fortunately this place was not one of them and our bread was gone in no time! So delicious, ah!

We had Catalina as our server and our experience was amazing! She was so knowledgeable about the menu and just a good server overall. The food was also amazing, we got 2 different croquettes, the bao buns, and the steak and it was all delicious. Highly recommend this spot!
L I★★☆☆☆
The location is really nice and the servers are friendly. The fish was not good. The burger and pork cheeks were good though. The bacalao with beets was really bad. The fish had no seasoning at all, not even salt. The beet puree was a strange pudding texture. The fact that two of us didn’t finish our food should have told them it wasn’t good. Also, we ordered the tartar (mango and avocados) but instead we received the Russian salad. It was good though.
Scott Colson★★★★★
We stopped here for tapas after our tour of the Palace, based on the reviews. Excellent food, good service, and we were seated looking out the window, so we could watch people going by. I highly recommend this location. Food is great! Menu is available via QR code and in five different languages. Staff easily spoke Spanish and English with us
Cοnstantinos Chronakis★★★★★
Delicious food! I ordered the artichokes with jamon and the pork cheek stew. Both of them were exceptional. The stew had a very hearty and homemade feeling. The portions were quite large, so they can definitely be shared between 2. For those 2+ a bottle of water and bread I paid 43€ (no tip included), but as I said the portions are large enough to share. I visited solo, so it was easy to find a table, but I wouldn't suggest going at peak hours without a reservation if you have a group of 2+. The staff speaks English and the dark haired waitress with the glasses was very polite and welcoming.
Keila Sierra★★★★★
Gloria Bendita was the first restaurant we chose as we touched down in Madrid. We were looking for a place that we could sit outside, enjoy a nice warm welcoming atmosphere, and have some phenomenal traditional Spanish food. They exceeded our expectations with all of the above. What made it even more special was our waitress, Rocio. She was welcoming, very friendly and accommodating. If you’re looking for a place that has great steak, seafood, and sangria, this is your place.

This was our first meal on Madrid soil and we wanted to make it as authentic as possible! In the heart of the old town, cozy cobble streets and 200 year old buildings is this wonderful place! Owner personally serves us with big smile! Old brick arches added to the vibe and we loved it even before food came! We opted for few options including shrimp, potatoes, anchovies, octopus, crockets and some beer on tap. We tried everything and while i didnt love everything and skipped anchovies we were all full and happy! To send us off the owner brought us all a complimentary shot! Highly recommend this place for a quick bite! Thank you for bringing Montreal vibe to us

El Mesón del Boquerón feels like stepping into an old Madrid postcard — the kind that’s still alive and full of character. The service was excellent, genuinely friendly in that effortless, local way that makes you feel at home right away. We had pulpo a la gallega, boquerones, and morcilla — everything was spot on. Fresh, perfectly cooked, and served with that classic charm you can’t fake. It’s a small place with a big soul, where even the stools feel like they’ve got stories to tell. A truly special corner of Madrid that reminds you why these traditional spots matter. 🐙🍷✨

U can tell the history of this tapas tavern by its interior and the 3 stars serving at the place. 😄 though I was traveling alone, I still ordered 3 tapas and took away some for breakfast 😅. The food was great, and the people were super nice and friendly. Interior is a bit worn but I see it as history. This might be the reason that its entrance is not as appealing as the other taverns nearby. Also, air conditioning is kind of weak but it is rather common in the old shops there. It was all in all a very enjoyable dining experience. A recommended eatery in Madrid.
Rachel Xenophon★★★★★
My husband and I randomly found this place while exploring and I'm so glad we did. It is such a gem of a place. We got patatas bravas, chorizo and some tortilla and loved every single bite. We also completely loved the wonderful gentleman who waited on us and introduced us to an incredible white wine from Portugal where he told us he was from. The food, wine and waiter were so great that we came back a second time on our last day of a 5 day trip just to see him and eat the food again. There was a language barrier for sure so we couldn't talk to him as much as we would have liked to, but he made us feel so welcome and even joked around with us (because we were in Real Madrid jerseys and he likes Atleti). I used Google translate (English to Portuguese) before we left to tell him what a great impression he and his establishment made and that we would remember it and him forever and hope to come back one day.
joohyun★★★★★
I went here randomly with my friend, and the owner welcomed us so kindly. The place was so cozy and classic, and the food was really good. I'll recommend it to everyone who visits Plaza Mayor. Qué rico!

Been here 2x right as it was closing. Never felt rushed and the food has been amazing both times. Great late night spot by the San Miguel market. The gambas al ajillo is to die for and the veal is good- order medium rare to avoid undercooking the fat. I ate these as gluten free and had no reaction. Daniel was our server and he was amazing.

I never take time to do these reviews but the food and experience was so good that I have to do it. The food was really really good, go ask for Paella, Pulpo and queso manchego. Service, I have to tell you that Daniel is my new best friend. Prices are reasonable for the area, much better than Mercado San Miguel. This is the first time I go to a restaurant and I have zero complaints.

The presentation of the olive infused sticks was really colorful. The food itself was great too. I had the brocheta espanola grande and the langostino (shrimp) manzanil. Check out my pictures.

This was a fun experience. I know that this market is a bit touristy for sure, but the food selection was better than other bar locations we were at. We loved our meat, olives and cheeses from here. I also loved my Vermouth here, the first place I enjoyed this in Spain!

Great selection of vermuts. The place is crowded with locals and tourists so might be hard to find your way to the bar/service. But I enjoyed the vermuts very much.

This is a great place in Mercado St Miguel! Tried it very late at night so it was quiet, super worth it. The staff were very helpful and knowledgable. Tried 2 different vermouth and got a side of olives (the smaller tray in the photo was complimentary). Definitely worth a try (aim for a less busy hour so you enjoy the atmosphere), will be going back!

I ordered the roasted vegetable empanada and the provolone and tomato (tasted like a pizza and super cheesy) empanada. Both were good. The guy toasted it before giving them to me. Would recommend trying! The market is very crowded and no place to sit but as a tourist it’s still worth checking out.

Tips for Dining Near Mercado de San Miguel

Navigating the dining scene in the heart of Madrid requires a bit of local knowledge. The area surrounding the market is one of the most touristic in Spain, but with the right strategy, you can eat like a local and avoid the overpriced menu del día traps. Here are some essential tips to elevate your experience and ensure you get the most value and flavor out of every meal.

1. Embrace the Bar Culture
The best food in this neighborhood is often served standing up. While tables can be scarce and require patience, the bar is where the energy lives. Order a caña (small draft beer) or a glass of house wine, point to a few tapas, and enjoy the atmosphere. You’ll eat faster, pay less, and experience the true rhythm of Madrid.

2. Skip the Paella at Night
A common trap for visitors is ordering paella for dinner. Authentic paella is a lunchtime dish, typically served on Thursdays or Sundays in Valencian tradition. If you see a restaurant near the Plaza Mayor advertising paella in a giant pan at 10 PM, it is almost certainly a frozen, tourist-oriented imitation. Opt for raciones of meat, fish, or seasonal vegetables instead.

3. Beware the "Menu Turistico"
Many restaurants right on the perimeter of the market offer a "Tourist Menu" with photos of the food. These are rarely the best representation of Spanish cuisine. Walk two or three blocks away from the main square; prices will drop, and the quality will increase significantly. A good rule of thumb is to follow the sound of Spanish being spoken.

4. Time Your Visit Strategically
To avoid the crush of both tourists and locals, consider eating at off-peak hours. An early lunch at 1:00 PM or a late afternoon snack around 5:00 PM will be much calmer than the 2:30 PM rush. For dinner, arriving right when the kitchen opens at 8:30 PM is the best way to secure a seat without a reservation.

5. Try the House Vermouth
Madrid has a deep-rooted tradition of vermut de grifo (vermouth on tap). Before lunch, locals will gather for a glass of this slightly bitter, herbaceous fortified wine served over ice with an orange slice. It is the perfect aperitif to open your appetite and is usually much cheaper than ordering a cocktail or a glass of red wine.

6. Pay Attention to the "Carta" vs. "Menú"
In Spanish dining, the "carta" is the à la carte menu, while the "Menú del Día" is a fixed-price lunch menu offered on weekdays. If you are looking for a budget-friendly, multi-course meal, look for a chalkboard advertising the Menú del Día. It is often the best value in the city, but it is strictly a lunchtime offering.

Stepping away from the hustle of the Mercado de San Miguel is the key to unlocking Madrid’s true culinary character. The market is a beautiful place to browse and buy a single gourmet tapa, but the surrounding streets are where meals become memories. By venturing just a few meters into the winding lanes of the Austrias district, you trade the noise of the crowd for the clink of glasses and the sizzle of a plancha.

Whether you choose a historic tavern that has served Hemingway or a tiny modern kitchen pushing the boundaries of flavor, the goal is to slow down. Savor the olive oil, tear the bread with your hands, and linger over a second coffee. This is the Madrid way, and it is waiting for you right outside the market’s doors.
