The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Carcassonne is housed in a beautiful building and features a nice selection of artworks. During my visit, there was a fascinating exhibition on the art of Japanese tattoos, which was very interesting for anyone curious about the topic. I highly recommend a visit for those spending time in the city.

A beautiful museum with a large presentation of french and many dutch painters works from 1600 - 1900. A lit of paintings represents local motives. A must to visit (free entrance) when in Carcassonne.
Ann Sofie Persson★★★★★
Very nice free art museum. Friendly staff.

One of the top places to visit in Carcassonne. Well kept and showcases a great blend of paintings and sculptures. The entry is free and a complete tour would take about 1 hour to 90 minutes. The place was quiet with minimum visitors on the weekday I was there.

Nice little place. In like some people I enjoyed the collection and thought it was well presented. Kept us entertained for about an hour and a half. When I was having trouble getting my baggage locker shut the lady on reception joked that I needed to be like Popeye. There was lots of information about the various collections in English, printed out in each gallery. For those people who had trouble getting upstairs, there does appear to be a lift. The gallery staff chattered, which I didn’t find offensive. Made it feel a bit less stuffy. In general I thought it was very good for free!

Great food and friendly service! We also had a very talented artist singing live.

Informative and interesting visit. We paid €9.50 for a student ticket that got us into the two sites (I think you can also get into the haunted house but that isn’t our thing?!). The sites were small and spent about 30 in each. However, they were full of information, artefacts and scenes around torture, and the inquisitions. Would definitely recommend to add to a historic visit to the city.

While there was nothing fun about that part of history, the guided experience with the executioner was top!
The actor (bourreau) captivated us from the beginning, and his performance made us have a very good time and better understand the history and the exhibits.
5 out of 5, the experience was worth every single euro.

Quite horrific if you think about it too long. Certainly a macabre experience. I bet it leaves some children with nightmares. If you can approach it in a more lighthearted frame of mind, very interesting.

Lovely museum with a great collection. It is small collection in a beautiful building and entry is free. The works are varied portraying themes around object, family, feminism and religion. The signs are all in French but you can easily translate on your phone or scan a QR code. Would visit again.

A great collection of art by a variety of artists. Some art is very thought provoking. Disappointing that all the information for each piece is only in French. I accept I should know more French, but the visitors I encountered there were from other countries too.

I love this museum. It not only tells the history of this particular rural school, but also the history of the French education. It is an excellent window for those who are not familiar to the French education.

The museum is beautifully situated, featuring an intriguing architectural design. Inside, the exhibits are thoughtfully arranged. During my visit with my daughter, I finished exploring before she did. While waiting outside, my daughter returned, clearly disappointed. It turns out the museum's receptionist noticed I had finished and urged her to leave quickly.

Good museum, however all of the captions are in French. It was immersive which was incredible for little ones, including trying on uniforms, doing play food in cafeteria, writing with ink, and drawing pictures in the library.

I was very sceptical at first - and oh Lord do they need funds to upgrade the whole place - but......BUT
It is incredibly informative and GREAT fun.
Forget interactive displays and VR experiences. Sitting at an old school desk writing with purple ink, building stuff out of simple wooden blocks....and for the musically inclined you can sing patriotic songs for kids in French.
I would recommend entering with great skepticism so that the joy of discovery becomes greater!

The Cité de Carcassonne completely exceeded my expectations. I was genuinely in awe from the moment I walked through the gates. The scale of the fortress, the perfectly preserved walls, towers, and medieval streets make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Walking through the cité and along the ramparts was unforgettable. Every corner offered incredible views and fascinating history. It’s hard to believe a place this spectacular still exists in such remarkable condition.
Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, photography, or simply beautiful places, Carcassonne is an absolute must-visit. I left thoroughly impressed and will remember this experience for a long time. One of the most breathtaking historic sites I’ve ever visited.

Went on a walking tour with a guide. Found it useful to understand the historical aspects of the cite from Roman times till today. Then spent time exploring ourselves. Recommend going early as not so busy. Plenty of bars/restaurants to choose from.
Suzi Morris★★★★★
Beautiful city. If you pay to go inside the castle and ramparts then be sure to look for the 3 sets of stairways for the outer ramparts that are located in the courtyard. We almost missed them and the views of the whole of the castle and Carcassonne are stunning!
You can book your tickets online when you arrive or whilst waiting in the queue, like we did. It definitely saved us time 🙂 Tickets were around €20 for adults and under 18s are free.
Oscar Hermansson★★★★★
The medieval city of Carcassonne exceeded all our expectations.
We’ve visited many beautiful historic towns across Europe, but Carcassonne is something else entirely. The fortress has stood here for nearly 2,000 years, with Roman origins dating back to the 1st century BC. Over the centuries it evolved into the magnificent medieval stronghold you see today, protected by a double ring of walls, more than 50 towers, and one of Europe’s largest surviving fortified castles. It’s easy to understand why it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Walking through the gates and wandering the narrow streets, it genuinely feels as though you’ve stepped back into the Middle Ages. Much of the fortress dates from the 12th and 13th centuries, while the celebrated 19th-century restoration by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc ensured that this remarkable place survived for future generations.
Yes, it is touristy—but for good reason. Even in summer, we found quieter corners where the atmosphere of the old fortress still shines through.
Our biggest mistake was only planning a short stop on our road trip. We assumed a few hours would be enough, but quickly realized there is far more to discover, both within the medieval city and in the surrounding area. We’ll definitely be back for a longer stay.
One piece of advice: don’t just come to tick another landmark off your list. Slow down, explore the side streets, visit the château and the ramparts, and stay into the evening when many day-trippers have left. Places like Carcassonne deserve to be experienced rather than simply photographed.
A truly remarkable place where nearly two millennia of history are still very much alive.

Located on the walk up to the Medieval city, is and awesome museum dedicated to the french military, easy to spend an hour, reading all the info, and browsing the exhibits, covering WW! to recent times.
Meera A★★★★★
We had a fantastic visit to this military museum. David, the owner, took the time to show us his top three favourite objects in the collection and explained everything in perfect English, which we really appreciated. Although the signs were in French, they were easy to translate using our phones, and David was always happy to answer any questions we had. A very welcoming and informative experience — would 100% recommend!

Fascinating collection of memorabilia, uniforms and information to mark French forces actions in recent wars. We were shown around this marvellous museum by Davide. The collection is an incredible history of remarkable people and so lovingly curated in their honour. Well worth a visit. Free entry, but donations (deserved) welcome.

What a place! Would love to visit again, just not when it’s as hot! The place was nice and cool, but it was hard to enjoy the courtyard in the heat. Big fan of such architecture, and this was a great example.
One highlight for me was the board games, great fun and got lost in it a bit.

Lovely castle. Tickets were 19€, and money well spent. Had 1+ hour in the castle and then time in the surrounding walls. A lovely walk (with lots of steps!), very beautiful. Staff very proficient and able to help in English, too, which (whilst not necessary) made our trip a little easier.

Absolutely beautiful!
Visiting the Château Comtal was such a highlight of our time in Carcassonne. The castle is incredibly well preserved, and walking through it really feels like stepping back in time.
We loved exploring the ramparts and towers—the views over the old city and surrounding area were stunning. The whole atmosphere is magical and full of history.
Everything was well organized, and it’s definitely worth going inside, not just seeing it from outside.
A truly memorable experience and a must-visit when in Carcassonne ✨

Very expenisve compared to what it offers. Low qualitie information where you sometimes barely can see what the information says because of the bad lichting. Also the lay out is poorly design with no good signs. And the probs are very bad qualitie Would not recommend it feels like an tourist trap

Why some people are so negative about this place, I have no idea. One ticket allows you to enter here and the Museum of the Inquisition. Between them, they provide an interesting and unique glimpse into a dark chapter of European history. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, and it was NOT expensive.

Stunning Medieval City Castle. Incredible workmanship on display. So easy to walk around. Plenty of shops bars and restaurants inside the walls. Very enjoyable day. Try get car parking close to the castle entrance. Its a hell of an uphill walk otherwise.

Well worth the cost of a ticket. For less than €20 you get to wander at your own speed around the entire ramparts of the medieval city of Carcassonne as well as exploring the inner castle. There’s an audio tour in a variety of languages available which we didn’t use but even without this the information boards along the way give you lots of information and the views of Carcassonne and the surrounding area are stunning. Just make sure that you wear plenty of sunscreen and can manage steep steps. A wonderful part of our day trip to Carcassonne.

We’ll worth €19 for chateau and rampart circuit. Book in advance, otherwise long wait. Well organised and good signage, in English. Needs 2 hours to fully appreciate. There’s a nice drinks kiosk inside the courtyard.

Perfect on a sunny day.....
A visit to the Medieval City is not complete, without doing the walk along the ramparts/walls and visiting the museum/castle. It is well worth the cost.
We went early 0930, opening time, to beat the crowds, we actually had the walls to ourselves for the first 30 minute, we took our time, and totally enjoyed the experience.

Legendary & Epic Castle
This is by far my favourite castle in France. I visited a lot but this one is special. What I like is the fact it is Medieval and so well preserved. It is very grand too. One of the largest around the world. You can feel the middle ages here and really appreciate what it must have been like to live in those days.
Highly recommended to visit.

I loved this little museum! You have to book in advance, and the whole team, from the receptionist to the curator, was very friendly. Thank you again for giving us the tour! It's just two small rooms, but they're packed with history. Unfortunately, due to the building's renovation, the medieval manuscripts aren't currently on display. The church is also very interesting to see, especially the original altar. Entry is free, but you can buy postcards and a book about the collections.
I highly recommend booking in advance and visiting this place, which is a breath of fresh air, because I find the nearby medieval town, while interesting, too touristy for my taste.

Tips for Visiting Museums in Carcassonne
To make the most of your cultural exploration, it helps to understand the logistical nuances of this historic city. While spontaneity has its charm, a little forethought can save you from long queues, unexpected closures, and museum fatigue. The following insights will help you navigate the local museum landscape with the ease of a seasoned traveler.
Prioritize the Passes
If you plan on visiting multiple attractions, particularly those within the medieval fortress, look into the Carcassonne City Pass or combined tickets offered by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux. These bundles often include access to the Château Comtal and the ramparts alongside other historical sites, offering significant savings compared to purchasing individual entry tickets.
Plan Around the Lunchtime Closure
Many independent and smaller museums in Carcassonne, especially those in the Bastide, close for a long lunch break, typically between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Unlike large metropolitan museums that run continuously, the pace here is more relaxed. Schedule your sit-down lunch during this window to avoid finding the doors locked just as you arrive.
Check Seasonal Hours Diligently
While the Cité is busy year-round, many cultural venues operate on drastically reduced schedules during the winter months (November through March). Some may close entirely for annual maintenance in January. Always verify the official website or call ahead rather than relying on outdated guidebooks or third-party mapping apps.
Wear Comfortable, Uneven-Surface Footwear
This is not a city for flimsy sandals. The distance between the Bastide Saint-Louis and the Cité is a steep, uphill walk, and the streets within the fortress are paved with cobblestones that can be slippery when wet. Even inside museums housed in medieval buildings, you will encounter spiral staircases and uneven stone floors, so sturdy shoes are essential for comfort and safety.
Respect the Photography Rules
While you can freely photograph the exterior architecture and cityscapes, many art museums strictly prohibit flash photography to protect pigments and tapestries. Some smaller, privately owned museums may ban photography entirely to protect the uniqueness of their exhibits. Always look for signage or ask the front desk before snapping a picture, as rules can vary drastically from room to room.
Allow for the "Village" Experience
Don’t rush from one exhibit to the next. The museums located inside the Cité are often housed within the historic walls themselves. Give yourself time to wander the surrounding lanes, listen to the street musicians, and appreciate that the atmosphere is half the experience. A visit to a museum here is often intertwined with the architecture that houses it.
Stepping into Carcassonne’s museums provides a necessary counterpoint to the visual spectacle of the ramparts. It is an opportunity to slow down and understand the layers of history that have shaped this unique corner of France, from the Romans to the textile boom of the 18th century.
By mixing the grandeur of the fortress with the intimacy of these cultural institutions, your trip becomes more than just a photo opportunity; it becomes a comprehensive education in the soul of the Languedoc. Whether you spend an hour admiring fine art or a morning exploring ancient stonework, you will leave with a deeper appreciation for the city behind the walls.
