12 Best Italian Restaurants in La Rochelle

La Rochelle, with its historic Vieux Port, arcaded walkways, and fresh Atlantic breeze, is a city that seduces the senses long before you sit down at a table. While the towers of the old harbor often steal the spotlight, the culinary landscape here is equally commanding. The blend of maritime tradition and modern French gastronomy has created a dining scene that is both deeply authentic and refreshingly innovative.

Finding a truly memorable meal in a city so rich with options requires looking beyond the tourist-laden terraces. You want the places where locals linger over long lunches, where the seafood is sourced from the nearby fish market, and where the pasta is rolled by hand. Whether you are seeking a romantic dinner overlooking the marina or a rustic trattoria tucked away on a cobblestone lane, La Rochelle delivers with confidence.

Italian cuisine holds a special place in the heart of this coastal city. It is a natural pairing—the simplicity of high-quality olive oil and garlic complements the briny freshness of the Atlantic catch. The city boasts a vibrant community of Italian restaurateurs who have brought the soul of Naples, Rome, and Sicily to the Charente-Maritime coast, ensuring that the pizza crusts are blistered and the ragù simmers for hours.

Navigating the crowded restaurant scene can be overwhelming, especially during the summer months when the port is bustling. To help you avoid the tourist traps and dine like a true Rochelais, we have curated a list of the most exceptional Italian tables in the city. These are establishments defined by their consistency, hospitality, and dedication to the craft of Italian cooking.

From wood-fired ovens that produce perfectly charred Neapolitan pies to elegant dining rooms serving refined fresh pasta with truffle, this guide covers the full spectrum. We have considered atmosphere, location, price point, and ingredient sourcing to bring you a selection that suits any occasion, whether it is a quick bite after exploring the Aquarium or a leisurely multi-course affair.

Below, you will find the definitive guide to the best Italian restaurants in La Rochelle, followed by insider tips on how to maximize your dining experience in this beautiful port city.

Just a really nice Italian restaurant. Great quality food, friendly efficient service right by the waterfront. I had the local fish dish with bread and they also do a plant based pizza. Sun-dried tomatoes, olives, courgettes, mushrooms, onion on a classic Neoplotitan base. 10/10.
Paul Leighton★★★★★
Pasta Carbo Della Storia, very nice and tasty but warm only not hot. The pizza La Zucchina - well lost for words a fantastic pizza and the pizza base was amazing. Great service and beside the pasta dish. Definitely a place I would recommend. Try the La Zucchina signature pizza.
Katinka Csiger★★★★★
Good food, attentive waiters made every effort to accommodate my partner's nut allergy, our main waiter Martin was friendly, professional and helpful. The salmon tricolor was really nice and the hot sauce with it was so delicious we asked for an extra pot. Portions were generous. I had Burrata Bliss and Polpette Alla Contadina which were both flavourful.

It's hard to believe that this italian restaurant is 4.7. /5 ). We ordered the salmon pasta and the chicken risotto. The pasta dish was dry. I ate the small piece of chicken and left the cheese risotto. We ate in 20 minutes and left the restaurant. The waitress was friendly. We were ask to leave at tip to the team, but not mandatory. We left at tip, but ...The atmosphere was ok. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Excellent pizza restaurant serving great vegetarian pizzas. Normally veggie pizzas are loaded with cheese and sparsely sprinkled with a few tiny vegetables, but not here. Instead, there was minimal cheese but lots of delicious vegetables including dried tomatoes and borettane onions, making it truly flavoursome. The Reine pizza was equally good, with lots of ham and parmesan cheese. Great service, and made our dog very welcome.

This is a review on the food I ordered and only that. The reviews are good so it was only a bad experience for me obviously. So, it was hot and I just wanted a salad.... chicken salad....the worst chicken salad I've ever had both in presentation and quality. (see picture) It was absolutely shocking and a 3 year old could have made something better! Lettuce, stale croutons, and 'reformed chicken nuggets' Disgusting really. Honestly, how any chef could have prepared that and thought it was acceptable to serve (especially at 17 Euros!!) is beyond me? I was asked when paying if I had enjoyed it and I politely explained how bad it was and was told 'sorry... maybe you should have had a pizza!!!" Incredible response! I paid in full and had no dessert. I have attached a photo of what a chicken salad should look like!
Jean Raingeonneau★★★★☆
The food is great but the price is a bit too high for the size of the pizza. The regina was very good, but the service was a bit sloppy. The terace is a little noisy but it is a part of the place.
Sophie Baal★★★★☆
All around great place! Only waited 30min to get an outdoor table right during busy dinner service. Server was friendly and drinks and food were pretty good not outstanding. Nonno Leo was absolutely amazing for Italian food so this just couldn’t compare.
Austen Marsh★★★★★
An Italian restaurant that is part of a chain, but I found the food excellent and the staff very welcoming. It was good value too at about 55 euros for 2, having 2 courses and a drink. The main thing that stood out was the freshness of the ingredients in the pizzas and a very good tomato sauce.
Milena★★★★★
One of the best pizzas we ever had! Would like the secret recipe of tomato sauce. 😂Beautiful atmosphere and wonderful staff. Water in a rooster jug is an extra bonus. I would really recommend this place. Thank you for such a great work!

We had dinner here last night and everything was great! The place was very clean and well organized, and our server Emma a very kind, attentive lady really took good care of us. Everything went smoothly and we felt really well looked after. Definitely a nice spot for a relaxed evening out!

Delicious food and friendly and professional service. Very very busy and a beautiful restaurant. Had selection of starters burratta razor clams and salmon gravadlax all delicious certainly return

The worst pizza in the world. Not roman at all, more like a shame. Raw tomatoes, lack of cheese and why do you put ruccola in every single dish? Your ruccola is also dead, like my soul after eating this pizza. Service and place ar good.
Syl Rootlieb★★★★★
My girlfriend and i came around 19:15/19:30. Just in time, because after it started to get really busy. The service was excellent, nice staff and they gave you the time to search for what you want. The pizza was only hard to cut with a knife, but it was delicious. I do have to say the pizza really fills up your belly and a dessert is almost not needed. It was only a little expensive, but for how everything tasted it was worth it. I recommend this restaurant to go to with your lover.

Hmmm.... I'm unsure how to rate this establishment because they don't even have a drinks menu. So how are you supposed to know what to order for a drink. Albeit we ordered a bottle of Italian rosé which was ok and not overly dear. But I absolutely would have preferred a pint of peroni on draft.... What is wrong with these establishment a drinks menu should always be available even if on a chalk board. It's unusual especially for diners on holiday. Or am I missing something. Our food was expensive and tasteless. We ordered Spag BOL which had little to no meat in every bite to consider it was a bolognese sauce very poor watery with no flavour other than copious amounts of parasan cheese I added and my husband's caborna again had runny white cheese running through it and again watery & salty with no flavour from the very little bacon in it. Pasta was overcooked therefore it became very sogdy and very underwhelming. We absolutely wouldn't eat here again as much better pasta at another establishment on the water front that was far superior and cheaper.

I wish I could give my experience 10 stars as it was well deserved! I had the most incredible tagliatelle carbonara and was really impressed that the staff checked with the kitchen what I could eat and what I should avoid on the menu before I even asked (as I am pregnant). I was served by the loveliest young lady called Fleur who was kind and attentive, giving great suggestions and providing service with a beautiful smile ❤️ I will 100% be returning when I am next in Larochelle.

Good to average pizza but not amazing. Very fast service. Annoying: We asked for the different pieces of pizza we couldn’t finish to be packed up to take home. They said they would do it, but when we got home, we realized that they had only packed half of the leftover pizza and apparently threw the rest away.
Desi Moëllic★★★★★
If you're craving authentic Italian flavors, Ragazzi is the place to be. They serve both pasta and pizza, and the pizza is just like in Italy, thick, rustic crust with generous toppings and that perfect wood-fired taste. The portions are hearty and satisfying, ideal if you're really hungry! Their pasta dishes are rich and comforting, and the desserts? Wow. The tiramisu is creamy and perfectly balanced, while the profiteroles are absolutely massive and indulgent, definitely made to share (or not!). The service is quick and friendly, and the staff make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. They also have a lovely wine cave with a great selection to pair with your meal. The ambiance is warm and relaxed, there are ingredients displayed creatively along the walls and even the floor, perfect for a cozy dinner or a casual lunch with friends. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Ragazzi brings a little slice of Italy to the heart of La Rochelle.

Absolutely fantastic. Everything about this establishment is fantastic. The quality of the pasta dishes exceptional. We were advised all made by hand. Perfect portion size to. The restaurant's Front of house waiter was so welcoming and extremely helpful with the food options available. QR code to scan menu translation. Overall a great first visit and I highly recommend because considering it's right on the waters edge the prices were extremely competitive. We didn't reserve a table but we eat quite early. No pressure selling or rushing us to leave table either.

Superb pizza right near the port in the old town. Excellent food including a wide choice of delicious vegetarian options. We had 2 delicious pizzas, lovely cocktails then amazing panna cotta and a chocolate mousse for dessert. Very friendly helpful staff and excellent service. Highly recommended.

I was recommended by a friend to try out Nonno Leo's, and it was amazing ! I got the Pesto Rosso (with olives) and it was delicious. The pizza dough is amazing, with a delicious oak fire taste. The restaurant is a bit small, but super cosy :))

I ordered with UberEats a Carciofi Napolitan Pizza 🍕, a Lemonade and a Tiramisu at Nonno Leo Pizzeria. I must confess that I was quite disappointed with tonight's order. The expensive 16,90€ Pizza 🍕 was delivered more than an hour after the order was placed and came cold. Have to add that the Pizza 🍕 had nothing to do with a true Napolitan Pizza 🍕; no thin crust nore thick extoriors. The 14€ Tiramisu had no texture or any coffee flavor to it. Moreover, the time of order preparation on the UberEat's delivery ticket was grosselly scratched out twice for different times (initially 7:49 / 8:00 / 8:19 / 8:09). To finish off, they stick a little note on the Pizza box explaining to people how to heat your Pizza 🍕 in the oven. What happens to people that order a Pizza 🍕 and have no oven to heat the pizza in (my case) ? Basically, I would not recommend this place to anyone or maybe as a simple bar for a Lemonade or a soda pop. The Lemonade that they didnt make was the only thing I enjoyed. I stay with the feeling I got ripped off and was invited to a cold diner this saturday night.

Great pizza - would have given a five star review but my pizza & my husbands was luke warm. Also, very good service & full at early opening.

Delicious pizza in a low-key setting with friendly and attentive wait staff. All for a reasonable price. Limited menu: these folks stick with what they do best. Despite many customers to serve, staff stays calm and cool. And Romeo’s ice cream bars were just the right dessert. Very pleasant experience!

We didn't have a reservation but the host was kind and said we could have a table that was reserved for 9.30pm. Beautiful interior. Great selection of pastas and pizzas. We all had different pasta dishes which were a good portion size and really flavourful. Wine was quick to arrive but we had to remind the waiter about my cocktail. They maybe should have a couple more veggie pastas. They were accommodating when we asked to remove the meat from our pasta dishes. Definitely go back again the next time we are in La Rochelle.

Very nice decor and the service was good. Food wasn't very good. Burrata salad was ok I guess but nothing social. The Parma Ham and Rocket pizza was below average. Way too much bread and cheese overpowering the ham and rocket. Maybe other dishes here are good but I can only comment on what I ate.

Delicious food (excellent quality, cooked to perfection), fabulous decor (definitely insta worthy), attentive staff, quick service. There’s even an under 12’s menu! What’s not to love? We discovered this restaurant on our last evening in La Rochelle, otherwise we’d definitely return!

Great Pizza, good wine. I‘ve visited the small Italian restaurant twice within a 3 day business trip, as the pizza was very very good, the staff was very friendly and the wine was good as well. The pizza was made and served within 10 minutes, no long waiting time. In addition, compared to other restaurants, it was not overcrowded, everybody kept distance and I felt very safe from Covid. Highly recommended. ❤️🍕

Just had one of the best meals in a long time. From entering the restaurant we were greeted by the most friendliest host. We sat outside as we had a small dog with us and can at times be barky. He was accommodating and brought water for him. The derive was quick and the food was excellent. If passing definitely stop in for food and wine. Not overly expensive also for bottle of wine, pizza, still water and pasta was under €60

Insider Tips for Dining Italian in La Rochelle

Before you make your reservation, it is worth understanding the rhythm of dining in this coastal hub. La Rochelle operates on a schedule that prioritizes fresh markets and the ebb and flow of the tide, which directly impacts how and when you should eat. The following tips will help you secure a table, order like a local, and enjoy the highest quality ingredients the city has to offer.

  1. Book ahead, especially for the Vieux Port. The most atmospheric tables overlooking the water are in high demand from May through September. If you have your heart set on a specific restaurant, call or book online at least two to three days in advance. Walk-ins are rarely accommodated during peak dinner hours (7:30 PM to 9:00 PM).
  2. Embrace the late seating. The French, and particularly the Rochelais, tend to eat dinner later than many international visitors. While many kitchens open at 7:00 PM, the atmosphere and energy peak closer to 8:30 PM. Arriving slightly later often means better service and a more vibrant, local ambiance.
  3. Look for the "Fait Maison" label. While this guide focuses on authentic spots, be wary of generic pizzerias near the tourist traps. In France, "fait maison" (homemade) indicates the dish is prepared from scratch on the premises. If you see this, you know the pasta or sauce hasn’t come from a mass-production supplier.
  4. Pair local seafood with Italian wines. Many Italian restaurants in La Rochelle have excellent wine lists that bridge the gap between France and Italy. Don’t be afraid to ask for a recommendation. A crisp white wine from the nearby Île de Ré can pair beautifully with a seafood linguine, offering a unique fusion of local terroir and Italian technique.
  5. Check the lunch formulas (Formules). If you want to experience a high-end Italian restaurant without the high-end dinner price tag, go for lunch. Most top-tier establishments offer a "Formule Midi" (lunch set menu) that includes an appetizer and main course, or a main and dessert, for a fraction of the dinner cost.

The beauty of Italian dining in La Rochelle lies in its harmony with the local environment. The chefs here understand that the salt air and the fresh seafood are their greatest assets, and they weave these local treasures into classic Italian recipes with remarkable skill.

As you wander back through the illuminated arcades after your meal, the sound of the masts clinking in the harbor will provide the perfect soundtrack. Whether you opted for a simple Margherita with buffalo mozzarella or a delicate plate of lobster ravioli, you will leave with a deeper appreciation for how well the spirit of Italy has taken root in this French Atlantic stronghold.
