12 Best Family-Friendly Restaurants in Montpellier

Dining out with children in a French city can feel intimidating if you do not know where to look. While Montpellier is known for its chic wine bars and romantic plazas, it is also a surprisingly welcoming destination for families. The key is knowing which terraces are spacious enough for strollers and which kitchens are patient enough to serve a picky toddler.

The local dining culture in the South of France is lively and social, which works in your favor when dining with kids. Unlike quieter, more formal dining rooms, many Montpellier restaurants embrace the energy of a family meal. You simply need to steer away from the cramped historic center venues and look for spots with outdoor seating or dedicated children’s menus.

This guide focuses on practicality. We have considered high chairs, changing facilities, speed of service, and menu flexibility. We have also prioritized restaurants that offer authentic local cuisine, ensuring that parents can enjoy the regional flavors of the Languedoc while the little ones are kept happy.

Whether you are looking for a wood-fired pizza near the Place de la Comédie, a healthy organic brunch in the Antigone district, or a shaded garden terrace in the Beaux-Arts neighborhood, Montpellier has an option for you. The following selection balances casual comfort with quality ingredients, avoiding the typical tourist traps that often disappoint families.

We understand that a successful family meal requires more than just a kids’ menu. It requires space, patience, and a welcoming atmosphere. These restaurants have been selected because they consistently deliver on these fronts, making them reliable choices for both residents and visitors exploring the capital of the Hérault.

Below, you will find a curated list of the best family-friendly restaurants in Montpellier. Each venue offers something unique, but all of them share a common trait: they will make you and your children feel genuinely welcome.

It does not matter what age you are you will love the decoration. The place is so inviting and enjoyable. Service is very nice, we could get the place even without reservation. Food is very good, no it is great. Local craft beer and local wine. Enjoyed it absolutely and thoroughly. All recommendations. Combined with a beautiful city, what is there not to like.
Kari Q.★★★★★
Both the salmon and beef tatar were very fresh and delicious. The eggs mayonnaise were also delicious. Personally I prefer my beef tartar with the raw egg and to be able to mix the ingredients together myself, but I absolutely ate every morsel. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend 🇨🇦

A downhill experience. Booked a table for three, for a brunch. The food wasn't very good, but I was mostly shocked by the poor quality of the service. The staff didn't find our reservation and started to ask for proof of reservation -- understandable, but at least they could ask nicely. Then, ordering food was quite the adventure. Due to food restrictions and severe allergies, we had to ask a couple of questions. The staff didn't even know what was in the "homemade dip" and seemed frustrated we would even ask. When ordering another dish without the sauce, they answered -- rudely -- they couldn't because the sauce was already made -- understand that the whole dish was pre-made and likely just re-heated. After pushing back, we could finally get one made without the sauce. Well, neither the regular brunch nor the modified one was very good. Luckily, the meal was cheap. Food is a matter of taste -- but I would at least expect the staff to be polite.

We booked online, got there our table was ready we didn’t have to wait at all. The staff was smiley and fun. We got two lunch menus, a mega cheeseburger each with comté and it was one of the best burgers I’ve had in france. They were out of pancakes so we took a cheesecake and a tiramisu. The cheesecakes missed crunch in the bottom and the tiramisu wasn’t special at all. However, we will come back for the pancakes !

It’s a nice restaurant for fussy eaters. Indeed the menu is made to ressemble a home meal. If you are with a group of people who cannot agree on what to eat, this is the place to go. It will appease tensions over the stressful “I don’t like anything on the menu”. The atmosphere is made to entertain and jog your childhood memory: board games, music playlist and other distractions from the food itself to stop fussy eaters desperately poring over the menu. No more than 2 or 3 ingredients per dish. We had a starter of chorizo falafels and courgette fritters followed by cheeseburger and beef chuck steak (typical French cut of beef, firm and tasty), generous portions of chips and side salad (as in salad leaves, French way). I was looking forward to the chips! They were well made. Pudding was a strawberry millefeuille. All in all, plenty to eat and good atmosphere that will appeal to the lost child in the grown ups and entertain the ones who never grew up.

There were many problems with the food. The salad was average and missing ingredients listed on the menu. The salad was also poorly prepared and it looked liked they just threw whatever they wanted into it. It was obviously poorly presented. Secondly the burger was wet pool of sauce. The bottom bun was completely soggy and fell apart once the wood skewer was removed. The fries were ok. In addition, the bathrooms were filthy and again our deserts weren’t even close to the menu description. The Mille feuille was just two biscuits with sweet syrup. Finally to make it worse they charged us the tip two times adding an extra 10 euros to the order. PLEASE do not come here unless you want under average food.

Wonderfully imagined food. Gravlax de truite was superb as was the chevre creme a l'abricot. Beautiful outdoor patios with great brunch on sundays.
Lee Heng★★★★☆
The service is really nice and friendly! It is a good place to have lunch/dinner with family and friends. You will have a big table and space to enjoy the food. I ordered the main dish pork, the pork is very tender with sweet source on top of it, the amount is big portion. The only thing is a bit oily, if they can reduce fat oil before put on the dish, it will be wonderful. The other part is about the background music, instead of bar music, it will be nicer to play some calm and slow music to match food style. In general, we had a very good time on it 😊

What a great choice!! We wondered around looking for somewhere and came across this surprising gem. The food was awesome and more than we expected. Would highly recommend this and would come back 100%..love the desserts in jars!!

That’s a good restaurant with nice wine. But overall o can’t say it’s a good price quality balance. I decided to give it a second chance to taste their menu from Chief. Overall staff is friendly and very nice. But it feels a bit messy

Beautiful restaurant with a beautiful menu. My friends who are locals took us here for an amazing and fulfilling meal. The burrata was great, and the duck confit was lovely. The walnut pasta was only okay though, lacked flavor. A friend put their burrata into their pasta which was interesting. I had a bite of the octopus and it was supper good!
Bruce★★★★☆
The food and atmosphere are top notch! I suggest getting here before 12 because soon after there is a massive line to get seated. This is a place to practice patients if you are used to speedy servers. The food is worth the wait!
Dawid Stachura★★★★★
Special attention must be given to the quality of service, as it is often overlooked. The waitstaff here is an extremely tight-knit, well-organized, and incredibly fast team. Everyone is friendly, very helpful, and perfectly coordinated. Despite the high volume of customers every day, they are always impeccable. If I were the owner, I would give everyone a raise. In today’s world, good waiters are truly priceless. As for the food, it is one of a kind. I visited several times over a few days, and every time the dishes were delicious and carefully prepared. Special praise goes to the duck 🦆 — great job, chefs! If I lived in Montpellier, I would be a regular every day.
Edward Jorczyk★★★★★
Such a wonderful find! Rosemarie is in a wonderful setting with friendly staff and great food at reasonable prices. Highly recommended. Make a reservation via their website and you can avoid the long wait line. Just go to the right side of the door when arriving and say "J'ai une reservation"!

Really good food, would recommend to try the buratta and the duck. Fast service, the deserts were so and so. Book in advance from the site so you don’t have to wait at the line.

Great place for kids. Staff members are super welcoming and really act as pirates. Food was pretty good. The goat's cheese burger was actually really good too. I had the mussels and was a bit disappointed at the small amount of fries it came with. Lots of mussels with barely any fries. But the place is still great for kids, they have a big play area/structure just after the gift shop and is better for kids 4+. There is also a show around 8.15/8.30pm and they do involve some kids in the show. It was really cool!
Sel★★☆☆☆
Come here for the decor, and the 'show', not to enjoy a meal. Yeah, it is good for kids who don't care what they eat, and if you want the whole Pirates of the Caribbean in France thing, sure. The food however is terrible, and extremely overpriced for what you get. The moules are a total joke. Tasteless, shrivelled, and with a very small portion of frites. All for 21EUR. Go to the Hippopotamus or the 3 Brasseurs if you want to enjoy your lunch. Actually, go to KFC, it is better value for money and at least the food is filling.
Rusty Braby★★★★★
Great experience! I read some reviews that the food would terrible - not so! (...I mean sure, it could be better, but do you really expect exception food at a place like this???). The food was decent and good and not over the top expensive either. The entertainment was better than I had expected.
Debbie Husar★★★★★
Julie and Emily Marty are both excellent.. Emily led the show the night we attended and Julie was our waitress/busser. Loved the show and the staff as well.
Sinead Murray★★★★★
This is one of our favourites in Montpellier. The atmosphere is always good fun and the food is very good! Menu is a good crowd pleaser. The staff put a lot of effort into the show.

Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. We had booked inside as thought it might be cooler but without any aircon an outside table in the pretty square was a better choice. The manager was great, found us a table & helped with our wine choices. Both our dishes were delicious, a salmon on black risotto rice & a steak burger in a green bun😁. We shared the Greek yogurt with lemon desert which was very tasty. £60 for 2 was pretty good value so I’d recommend Le Bistrok. BTW it’s also a short downhill walk back to the #1 tram👍🏻

Delicious, fast, atmospheric. The guys have good taste in music. They try really hard. We had a great time.

Unique and full of character and humour. Terrific and original food and cocktails too. I was amused at the simple English while the French one was full of jokes !
Eric Tang★★★★★
The server was excellent and thoroughly explained the menu. The staff spoke both English and French. Friendly and accommodating. Every dish we tried was fantastic 😍
Lorenzo Maffeis★★★★★
We passed through the city and we noticed this cute bistrot many times and we were willing to try it out. We got the chance to eat here for dinner and we were all positively surprised. The entrée were all very good, especially the original truffle croque monsieur that was amazing. The main course was great too! The risotto was super tasty, the bao burger original and flavorful, the meat with the bread gallette too! We took two glasses of wine that suited the meal just finely. The dessert was very generous, the vanilla ice cream in particular, and the chocolate cake amazing. Added to this, the two waiters were super nice and helpful, they explained the whole menu precisely and were very kind to us considered that we were not locals. I suggest to try this place at least once, even just to have a nice and enjoyable meal in a very cute and pleasant atmosphere in the center of Montpellier.

The pasta was fresh, as were all the toppings like the pesto. It's definitely a great place that we'll want to return to soon. Many thanks to the cooks who were very kind and helpful.

This is a great place, run by true enthusiasts who cook fresh food. The storefront doesn't lie, it's a snack bar! And a quality one at that! 🫶 Special mention for the student menu, and Daniel is fantastic.

One of the best meals I've had in France. Their chicken is to die for and I will be bringing all my friends here. The staff is incredibly nice and accommodating. Would recommend this spot over anywhere else in Montpellier.

I just visited menow, a cozy and welcoming restaurant that caters to both halal and vegetarian preferences, and I had an incredible experience. I went there with my friends, and we all left thoroughly impressed. The food was absolutely delicious. The menu offers a variety of dishes, all prepared with fresh and healthy ingredients. The decorations at Menow are stunning and exude a homey charm that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours catching up with friends or enjoying a quiet meal. I strongly recommend Menow to anyone looking for a restaurant that offers great food, exceptional service, and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a gem for those who value halal or vegetarian options, and I can’t wait to visit again inshallah ♥️.

Really nice café close to the botanical garden. The food was absolutely amazing, i personally recommend their avocado poké bowl. They also had a big variety of drinks and they were all fantastic, especially their porter. Finding the menu, ordering and paying was easy; you just had to scan a QR code. The prices are much cheaper than what you’d find in the center and the food is much better. I’d definitely recommend stopping by here! 🌟🌟🌟
Fraser R★★★★★
Arrived at our apartment just before lunch so this was the nearest cafe. Quite close to the university & as such there was a strong student vibe. I’d try & get a table in the shade next time 🥵. Wanted a light lunch so ordered some nachos & calamari. Both were delicious as was the Chardonnay. Highly recommended.
Raf De Groot★★★★☆
Great food! I had de butchers piece and it was very tasty. The service wad great, even though they were slightly understaffed, so we had to wait a little while. But overall it was a great experience
David Jones★★★★★
Stopped for lunch and we both enjoyed the “plat du jour” of Blanquette de veau followed by a cafe gourmand. Great friendly service despite my poor attempt at ordering in French. Busy lunch service but food arrived quickly and was tasty. Will return to try other menu items that caught our eye.
Emanuel Toarcăş-Marcu★★★★☆
I served my coffee outside and it was quite a lovely place, but pretty noisy and a bit crammed for my taste. I've seen that inside is way bigger so maybe I will go inside the next time I visit it.

We ordered take away. The hot dog is good. However the chicken tender is quite burnt. When I came back and asked about it, the person said it's normal. I'm not so sure if it's normal. Compared to other picture posted in the review, it looks quite burnt. Probably just not my taste. Hot dog however, was good. Will come back to try corn dog but won't buy the tender again.

Look like only one place where you can find some food after 21 in the city 🫠 Beef burger was quite nice. Burger with chicken a bit weird, but it’s chicken burger. Unfortunately no beer in the bar at all 😢

The best part? The coffee! It was legit and very tasty! The food? Huge portions and good!! The presentation is first class and you really get a lot for the money. I got my avocado toast with eggs. Great little spot for a straightforward casual feed on a Sunday evening after a long travel day! Tasty risotto brimming with chunky mushrooms and an unusual but tasty pistachio-lover's pizza. Service was quick and friendly and the location for al fresco in a busy square completely apt for a warm sunny evening.
B.★★★★☆
Nice restaurant, good Pizza with a very good dough, thin but crispy and tasty. It was a little too thin with the thick tomato too eat properly but still tasty. We had a salad before which was also good. Seating inside (it was raining) is ok, clean and relatively new. Staff was nice and friendly. Price was also fair. So, everything was good and nice, it's just that with a 4.9 rating you expect a little more. It's good and I would go again but it's not special, it's not a 4.9 (but then everything in Montpellier seems to be a little overrated). It is definetely recommendable for a normal night out with pizza, but not if you are looking for something special (which it is not claiming to be).
Katie Farmand★★★★★
Delish dinner in a bustling square. We enjoyed the pasta and pizza we ordered and also had an excellent Aperol spritz. Service was friendly and the food came out super fast. Highly recommend!
Pia Winter★★★☆☆
Really enjoyed our lunch here. Two small gripes: 6€ for two small scoops of ice cream felt a bit steep, and when paying by card, the waiter added a 10% tip himself without asking before handing over the terminal. We would have happily tipped anyway, so it just felt unnecessary – maybe a sign that staff aren’t paid enough and feel they have to build it in?

Excellent food, location and service. This restaurant is located in a very cute street and you can sit either outside or inside. We all loved our food. As I have celiac, this place was particularly wonderful for me. There is absolutely no risk of cross contamination. Even their beers are gluten free.
Jasmine Prisciandaro-Wood★★★★☆
Welcoming staff, very cute location, food was tasty and gluten free! Very nice nachos with good cheese sauce and good flavour. Easy lunch menu option that was nice to share between 2 for a light meal.
Farrah Ford★★★★★
Highly recommend going here!!! It is located on the famous pretty street with the coloured steps and there is indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered the vegan nachos, chips and guacamole and the curry Dahl and everything was delicious. They have a whole vegan menu which is amazing. A wonderful spot, food, service and variety!
Ivan Del Duca★★★★★
Being coeliac (or travelling with a coeliac son, like in my case) in France is a real nightmare. France is a wonderful country in every other respect, but its culture around managing coeliac disease still has a long way to go. Even grocery shopping is hard, since very few producers clearly label the absence of gluten, and cross-contamination isn't even on the radar. With restaurants it's worse: not only is it difficult to explain that this isn't a fad, but they'll swear there's no gluten and then fry the chips in the same oil they used for breaded food. So imagine the joy of discovering an entirely gluten-free restaurant like Takkito! Often that joy fades fast, because places making this choice don't measure up to "normal" restaurants. Happily, that is absolutely not the case here. Takkito exceeded every expectation, with outstanding fusion cooking on every level, dishes and drinks where aromas and spices from all over the world take centre stage, used with taste and intelligence. What's more, unlike many gluten-free restaurants, around 90% of the menu is naturally gluten-free by design - built on rice, corn tortillas, potatoes and vegetables rather than on imitations of gluten-based staples like bread, focaccia or pasta. I don't live in Montpellier, sadly, but as a non-coeliac, I'd happily eat here every single day.
Gunnar Mein★★★★★
Amazing food and friendly people in one of the prettiest streets in town. Stopped here because it smelled so good I had to. Gluten-free. When you are ready to give French restraint and subtlety a break and go for and explosion of flavor and spice!

Tips for a Stress-Free Family Meal in Montpellier

Navigating the local dining scene with children requires a bit of local knowledge. While the restaurants listed above are highly accommodating, understanding the rhythm of French meal times and cultural nuances will make your experience even smoother. Here are a few essential tips to keep in mind before you head out.

Book ahead and request a terrace. Montpellier enjoys a Mediterranean climate, meaning outdoor dining is possible most of the year. Restaurants fill up quickly, especially on Wednesday and Saturday nights. When you call to reserve, explicitly ask for a "table en terrasse" if the weather is nice, as this gives children more room to move without disturbing other diners.

Adjust to French dining hours. Lunch service typically runs strictly from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and dinner rarely starts before 7:30 PM. If you have young children who eat early, look for "service continu" (continuous service) restaurants or brasseries, which serve food throughout the afternoon. Otherwise, plan for a late lunch as your main meal of the day.

Look beyond the "Menu Enfant." While many family restaurants offer a standard kids’ menu of steak haché (burger patty) and fries, don’t be afraid to ask for a half portion of an adult dish. Many kitchens are happy to serve a smaller plate of pasta or fish, which allows your child to try higher-quality local produce.

Embrace the "Formule" for value. Many restaurants offer a "formule midi" (lunch deal) that includes a starter and main course or main course and dessert for a fixed price. This is often significantly cheaper than ordering à la carte and provides a great way to sample authentic regional cooking without breaking the bank.

Bring entertainment but keep phones silent. French dining is a social event that can last two hours or more. Bring coloring books or small quiet toys to keep children occupied between courses. However, avoid playing videos on tablets with the volume up, as this is generally considered disruptive to the local dining atmosphere.
