12 Best Cultural Venues in Girona

Girona wears its history not as a relic behind glass, but as a living, breathing part of its daily rhythm. While most visitors arrive to walk the ancient city walls or photograph the colorful houses along the Onyar River, the city’s true soul often reveals itself after sunset and inside its storied halls. From converted medieval convents to cutting-edge auditoriums, the cultural pulse of this Catalan city is remarkably strong for its size.

Unlike the sprawling cultural scenes of Barcelona or Madrid, Girona offers an intimate proximity to art, music, and theater. Here, you are not fighting crowds to catch a glimpse of a stage; you are sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with locals who have cherished these institutions for generations. The venues are often architectural masterpieces in their own right, seamlessly blending Romanesque stone with contemporary glass and steel.

Understanding the landscape of Girona’s cultural venues requires looking beyond the standard tourist map. It means discovering where the city’s prestigious film festival screens its entries, where experimental jazz finds a home, and where Baroque music echoes off ancient stones. For the culturally curious traveler, knowing where to go is the key to unlocking an authentic Catalan experience.

This guide focuses on the spaces that define Girona’s artistic identity. Whether you are planning a weekend getaway or a longer stay in the province, these venues offer a diverse range of experiences—from high-brow opera to avant-garde visual arts. They serve as gathering places for the community and as beacons for international talent.

We have curated a list that highlights architectural significance, historical importance, and the quality of programming. Each venue offers something unique, ensuring that whether you are a cinephile, a theater lover, or an architecture enthusiast, you will find a space that resonates with your interests. These are not just places to see a show; they are places to feel the heartbeat of the city.

As you plan your itinerary, consider the seasons. Many of these venues host major festivals throughout the year, particularly in the spring and autumn, which can elevate a standard visit into an unforgettable cultural pilgrimage. Booking ahead is often wise, as the intimate nature of these spaces means tickets can sell out quickly for marquee events.

Here is our selection of the most compelling cultural spaces that Girona has to offer.

It is not a very large space and the acoustics are not the best but for a piano recital or chamber music it serves the purchase. Because the floor is not slanted it can be difficult to see if you have someone tall in front of you.
Irene Compte (Irene Compte)★★★☆☆
Various options in a same space, art and culture exhibits, a public library and a small nice auditorium are part of the offer. The place could use some renovation to make the overall experience more pleasant.

Energetic electronica and a studious vibe resulting in the usual pockets of conversation and a shy dance performance. The venue was mostly closed off for the experience but some art remained evident.

Always nice to be in a real theatre. Though take care with the top row seats - too hot air (in winter, i.e. with the heating on) and bad sound quality

Awesome architecture and great shows, especially when Temporada Alta is on (autumn/winter theatre festival in Catalonia).

Clara Miret Ribes★☆☆☆☆
I cannot recommend this place because of the treatment of the workers. The work environment generated by the management is, in my experience, very negative and lacks respect for the staff. I believe that the way the team is treated is also part of the quality of an establishment.”
Juan Carlos Diez Hernández★★★★★
We were at this venue for the presentation of singer-songwriter Tona Gafarot's new album. It was a bit cramped due to the small size of the room, but this made us feel closer to this great artist and like we were among family. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

We did an artistic residency at El Foment, using the school space and enjoying the catering service of the Fonda and the Taverna. The school room is ideal for rehearsals, as a creative space and also for small-format presentations. Technically it is equipped and acoustically it sounds very good. In addition, we were able to enjoy daily meals at the Taverna and the Fonda where they offered us different possibilities of set menus with very good products. The communication with the managers of the Foment to link the issues of production, services and hospitality was very efficient and the personal treatment of all the team members was very friendly and professional.
Fundació UdG Innovació i Formació★★★★★
We have relied on El Foment on several occasions to organize recreational activities for different events: congresses, conferences, meetings, etc. and they have always exceeded our expectations. We should highlight the stick dancing, a beautiful experience that surprises and excites everyone, or the tasting of local wines. We have made use of the multipurpose spaces with great possibilities that the Center offers and also group meals in both the Fonda and the Tavern, always with very successful proposals and taking into account the casuistry of the diners. El Foment is a unique complex in Girona with very interesting cultural and gastronomic possibilities and with a very dedicated team of people behind it who make any management as easy as possible. Thank you very much and for many more years!
Oriol Cullell★★★★★

We held an event in this auditorium. Very comfortable and charming with a great historical painting. Chapel of the old hospital of Santa Caterina. The patio of the Magnolias is also a charming place and if you visit the small pharmacy that is accessed through the patio you can find a historic pharmacy with jars from the time. Let's see if you can find the "Tutie PP" jar, a remedy used when there were no other therapeutic alternatives.

Old dancing ball converted into a high-end cycling store and café. Magnificent architecture and decoration. It's worth visiting. It's a few steps above the famous Bistrot restaurant. Also, the stairs in front of the store were featured in several Game of Thrones episodes.

Very well restored. After years in a dilapidated state, the Antic Teatre Odeon has opened its doors in 2025. It has now been transformed into a gravel bike shop and a café. The paintings on the old stage and the iron columns have been restored. We have recovered a building with great heritage value and now everyone can enjoy it.

I moved to Girona last year and was hoping to have a decent concert hall in the area. I've been to concerts in Barcelona and continue to go there. It is good to be able to go to a concert locally instead of leaving town. The hall was very impressive. The quality of the acoustics was very good, better than what I expected. The local orchestra was good. The seats were comfortable and the view from just about any seat was adequate.

Small and very central space. It's quite hidden and difficult to see if you don't know the place. The exhibitions should be advertised more so that people know when they change and what is on display.

We went to this cultural space to see 4 simultaneous exhibitions. The first is a painting exhibition on Spanish realism represented by three painters related by family: Antoni López Torres, María Moreno Blasco and Antonio López García. Excellent and very well documented exhibition. The second presents some work by Modest Cuixart. The third is about photography and presents some of Claire Droppert's work and finally, a mini-exhibition on the circumstances of Walter Benjamin's death in Portbou. The four exhibitions are excellent and allow you to spend a cultural and enjoyable time. Congratulations.
Angie Martínez★★★★★
Contemporary cultural center, free and with exhibitions mounted with delicacy. In spaces with history, a privilege to be able to enjoy them and the cycles they offer throughout the year. Round tables with the artists, book presentations, openings with the artists who exhibit. Be able to approach art for free and have the opportunity to meet the artists. Right now Dolors Puigdemont and Enric Pladevall. Interesting.

Practical Tips for Visiting Cultural Venues in Girona

To make the most of your cultural exploration in Girona, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The city is compact and walkable, but timing, ticketing, and understanding local customs can dramatically enhance your experience. Here are some strategic insights to help you navigate the scene like a seasoned local rather than a first-time visitor.

  • Check for Festival Schedules: Girona is famous for events like the Temporada Alta festival in the autumn and the Girona Film Festival. If you visit during these times, you will have access to a concentration of world-class performances, but you must book tickets weeks or even months in advance.
  • Embrace the Late Start: Performances in Catalonia rarely begin before 8:30 PM or 9:00 PM, and evening events often run late. Plan to have a late afternoon rest or a late dinner (after 9:30 PM) to align your energy with the local schedule.
  • Look for "Dia del Espectador": Many theaters and cinemas offer a "spectator’s day," usually mid-week, where ticket prices are significantly reduced. Check the venue’s website for these discounts to enjoy high-quality performances on a budget.
  • Combine with a Vermouth: Catalan culture often pairs art with socializing. Before an evening show, do as the locals do and enjoy a vermut or a glass of local Empordà wine at a nearby bar. It is the perfect way to transition from sightseeing to a night at the theater.
  • Walk or Use Local Transport: Parking in the Old Town (Barri Vell) is notoriously difficult. Most venues are within walking distance of each other, but if you are staying outside the center, use the local bus network or park in the underground lots on the periphery of the historic district.

The beauty of Girona’s cultural scene lies in its accessibility and authenticity. You are not merely a spectator here; you are participating in a tradition that has been cultivated for centuries. Whether you find yourself moved by a symphony in a Baroque hall or challenged by a contemporary installation in a repurposed industrial space, the memory of the experience will linger long after you leave.

As the final applause fades and you step back onto the cobblestone streets, you will understand why Girona is more than just a picturesque stop on a Catalonia road trip. It is a city where the arts are woven into the fabric of everyday life, waiting to be discovered by those who take the time to look inside.
