Bilbao’s transformation from an industrial port to a hub of art and gastronomy is no secret, but its specialty coffee scene has quietly become just as compelling. While the Guggenheim draws global crowds, a dedicated community of roasters and baristas has been perfecting the craft of the perfect cup. For locals and travelers alike, finding a great café here is less about a caffeine fix and more about participating in a modern Basque ritual.
The city’s coffee culture blends traditional Spanish café life with a distinctly Northern European precision. You will find old-school spots serving cortados alongside minimalist spaces experimenting with single-origin beans. This diversity means there is a perfect spot for every type of coffee lover, whether you need a quiet place to work or a sunny terrace to watch the world go by.
Navigating the city’s neighborhoods, from the narrow streets of Casco Viejo to the wide boulevards of Indautxu, reveals distinct coffee microclimates. Each area offers a different pace and atmosphere. Understanding this geography is key to finding the cup that matches your mood and your itinerary.
We have spent considerable time exploring the city’s evolving café landscape, evaluating not just the espresso extraction but the ambiance, service, and food offerings. We prioritize establishments that demonstrate a genuine passion for sourcing and sustainability. This guide focuses on venues that consistently deliver quality, ensuring your coffee experience in Bilbao is memorable.
Many visitors are surprised by the high standards maintained here, which rival those of major European capitals like Berlin or Copenhagen. The local roasters are pushing boundaries, often collaborating with chefs and bakers to elevate the entire experience. It is an exciting time to explore the city’s culinary underbelly.
The following selection represents a mix of established favorites and innovative newcomers. We have considered location, bean quality, and the overall atmosphere to provide a comprehensive list. Whether you are a digital nomad needing fast Wi-Fi or a tourist seeking a strong espresso before a museum visit, you will find an option here.
Without further ado, here is our curated list of the twelve best coffee shops currently operating in Bilbao.

This is the ultimate hipster craft beer and coffee shop. Very nice patrons and staff, great selection of canned and bottled beer, six rotating taps, good gildas (served with a Bloody Mary style tomato sauce), good music. Very cozy, you might not find a place to sit down, but if you let yourself go with the flow, you will be standing on the sidewalk in front of the bar with the locals anyway. Big recommendation, was here every evening three nights in a row because it was just around the corner from my Airbnb.
tom brown★★★★★
Great little cafe bar with 5 taps pouring quality craft beer with great service. The food was great, especially the gildas served with a mini Bloody Mary! The music was class too.

Great coffee place dicovery in Bilbao. They make delicious coffee and here you’ll find local people

I visted here in early December 23 and have to say I wasn't dissapointed. OK, it's only a small place, so it can quickly fill up. So my advice is to get here early. What it lacks in size it makes up for in warmth, friendliness & intimacy. The beer choices whilst limited (by lack of space) are quite impressive and it's fairly obvious that the owner has a good knowledge of craft ales. The choices range from IPA's, Porters, Stouts, to Pilners & Belguim types. On the evenings of our visits there were 6 beers on tap, 3 IPA's, 1 x Porter, 1 x Belguim Dubbel & 1 x Pilsner, not to mention and impressive selection of craft ales in tins (inc some from the UK) The bar's small size can make it a bit squashed at times (especially when it gets busy) but there are a few small tables around the back with a sprinkling of extra chairs & stools. In the worst case scenario there are even a couple of small tables & chairs outside on the street, however the street footpath is narrow & also very steep (Oh & it needs to be dry!) There are two small toilets to the left & rear of the bar (both very clean) On our visits we had the opportunity to sample a few of the bar snacks, both the hummus & the carrot cake were delicious. I can also recommend the hot chocolate & coffee which were equally of top quality. Overall this bar was a great find and despite it's small size I would highly recommend it. The owner is a lovely guy (who speaks better English than my Spanish) and also very helpful. If you're not sure about anything, just ask. To add just a footnote, the bar is located just a short walk from the Ibarreko Zubia footbridge, but be aware if you're not good on your feet it is quite a steep little climb.
Zita Zsofenszki★★★★★
Tiny, nice place, very good craft beer selection (on tap & canned). Some pintxos available.

Wow, just wow. The people are so nice. Loved the vibe, Loved the shake with the protein And Loved my sandwich as well. The waitress was super nice. Never felt the language barrier as they speak English too. Great Breakfast spot. 🍳👌😍
Lancelot Devos★★★★★
Very nice brunch in this aesthetic Bali-Ibiza-place. Coffee was delicious, portions of the food could have a been a bit bigger in my opinion. You have to order at the bar.
Stella Ceka★★☆☆☆
I was excited to try this specialty coffee place, but I left quite disappointed. You have to order at the counter, and then you’re given a number so your coffee and food can be brought to your table.
Unfortunately, the service wasn’t great, the guy at the counter didn’t seem friendly at all and gave the impression that he didn’t really want to be there.
The coffee itself was okay, but not what I would expect from a specialty coffee shop. I usually expect well prepared coffee with proper microfoam, and I’ve definitely had much better elsewhere. The same goes for the food.
The café itself is actually quite cozy, which makes it even more of a shame that the overall experience didn’t live up to expectations.
Overall, I found it quite pricey for what you get. Maybe I just visited on a bad day, but I’ve had much better experiences at other specialty coffee spots in Bilbao.

very cute cafe! the service was great, ander and mely assisted me and they were so nice and helpful! the coffee was delicious and we had the toast with ricotta and tomato and it was very fresh!!
Aybars Aydal★★★★☆
It is central, everything was fresh and tasty. Nothing special or fancy, the breakfast as we know but with carefully collected ingredients. I like it.
Definitely have cappuccino, it was among the best I have had.
Service was also clean and fast.

Espresso was so strong but I like it.
We had bryon toast with egg which was so cooked I expected less cooked but taste was good (the avocado sauce was so tasty, I love it) also pancake was good, we ordered with peanutbutter.
Overall place was great, if you have 2-3 days in Bilbao you should give a chance to this place for both coffee and breakfast ☕️🥚
Paula★★★★☆
The pistachio cheesecake was delicious. Coffee was good, not great. Low acidity for the flat white. I liked that it is open every day and in a convenient location. But it does get busy, so prepare to wait for a table.
Lottie★★★★★
Truly amazing real matcha! Its refreshing to see a café have so many unique options on their menu such as an iced strawberry/mango matcha and a curcuma latte. The cheesecake with pistache is delicious and rich in taste.
As a tourist I normally dont feel welcome in cafés in big cities but Arvo definitely proved otherwise. The atmosphere was nice and the music not too loud. Perfect for a person, like me, with ASD.
I recommend going here!
Peter★★★★★
Went there for the second time. I just love it!! We were treated directly at the door and needed to wait 2 minutes for a table. Afterwards the super friendly staff came to take the order. I can recommend the iced chai latte (had 2 of those) and than the amazing toast! All of them are delicious so hard to say which to recommend.
Pricing for this quality of beverages and food is more than fair and justified! As soon as I’m back in bilbao, this will be the place to be for me. Thank you! 🙏
Sam★★★★★
Visited twice in this trip. Food, vibes, service, location are all perfect. Hope to go again near future. Love the avocado toast and pancakes. Fair price and yum.

We had 2 Matcha lattes with oat milk and a flat white coffee with oat milk also and it was very delicious and high-quality. We even went back for a second round of Matcha lattes. The owner was very friendly and detailed oriented with a calm energy and prepare prepared all our drinks with a lot of care. After traveling north Spain for one week this was by far the best matcha latte we had. Big Recommendation! 🍵😍
Andreas Friedl★★★★★
I bought two bags of coffee beans while staying in Bilbao for a few days and the quality is fantastic! I got a bag of Columbian and of Kenyan coffee and both are great. I am drinking a cup of the Kenyan right now. I live in the US and typically order my coffee from roasters in California and Wisconsin but the beans I got from Nokora are probably the best I’ve ever tasted. Very impressed!
Gerard Brown★★★★★
Great coffee spot. Our barista was meticulous and obviously takes pride in serving great coffee. Highly recommend.
Barbara H★★★★★
I make a huge effort to find the best quality coffee in every city I travel to. In Bilbao, I found it at Nokora. World class. There's no seating area inside, but customers are seated on benches outside the shop. There is also no food, but if you love coffee, this is an essential stop.
O’lena★★★★★
Specialty coffee. Variety of beans, fantastic barista! Very detailed coffee talk, we speak the same language! Strongly Recommend! Try V60, flat white on good beans 🫘🤎

I loved everything about this place — the food, the service, the matcha, the cozy atmosphere, and even the packaging. The bagels were incredible, so fresh and flavorful! I tried the fresh mozzarella one and loved it so much that I went back twice during my short stay in Bilbao. The second time I ordered takeaway, and the bagel was still amazing.
Bianca is incredibly sweet and made the experience even more special. She surprised me with a cookie and a cute message in my takeaway bag. Thank you, Bianca, for making DULPA feel so warm and welcoming!
Emelie Lee★★★★★
This place is great for busy mornings. The food here came out fast and quick which was great because we were in a hurry. The peanut butter toast was great and energizing along with the açaí bowl. The bagels looked great. The banana bread and croissant were a little bland, but the flavors were still there. The service was nice. So was the whole area, the area was a little busy, but not insane. Great place overall, good if you need a little snack. 4.8/5
Paola Andrea Arango Rivero★★★★★
We had a fantastic experience at Dupla Bilbao. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive throughout our visit.
The food was fresh, full of flavour and beautifully presented. Every dish was prepared with care, and you can really appreciate the quality of the ingredients. It's a great place to enjoy excellent food in a stylish but comfortable setting.
We would definitely come back the next time we're in Bilbao. Highly recommended!
Bora Ketenci★★★★★
Amazing place!
The food and service were excellent. The consistency of the eggs was absolutely perfect—when I cut into it, the yolk flowed beautifully onto the bread.
The presentation of the tea was also very nice. On top of that, the cafe is very clean, and the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming.
Highly recommended!
Lisa Case★★★★★
Amazing cup of coffee! My breakfast, hummus bagel, my sons avacado toast and the banana bread all very tasty. Small place and it fills up but the ambiance is nice. I highly recommend!!

The milk in Cappuccino was slightly overwhipped in my opinion - the foam was a bit too airy and thick and it separated from the liquid. I prefer a silkier foam/milk that is not separable at least in the first few minutes. Still it’s not a bad coffee place, it’s just that there are better ones

Very good coffee. Very friendly barista. Small and cheerful speciality coffee shop in Bilbao.

I’ve tried the vanilla latte and chai and both were amazing! Love that they have oat and almond milk options too. Everything you see on the table is finished. All ingredients were so Mediterranean vibes and fresh.
We own an olive oil grove back in Türkiye and I approve the freshness and style of breakfast. Of course there is not plenty of ingredients like a Turkish breakfast but this is Spanish style.
We just went with the two ‘menus’ on the board. The tastes were wonderful, from the bread to the orange juice. My friend was about to buy 1 liter of it if we would not be touring all day.
The croissant with nutella was also so fresh, crisp and delicious. I guess the nutella is different than the one produced in Türkiye, it was way better.
It is a small, quiet place. Everyone inside was Spanish (maybe cuz of off-season). Central. Service is smiling.
Franklin Anne-Marie★★★★★
very nice breakfast, everything was spot on! also the lady was easy going in terms of what we wanted within our breakfast! highly recommend 🙂

I had a couple of pintxos and a cafe con leche here. Everything was delicious. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the city. 🙂

Had a sweet experience at this cat cafe. The staff was nice, the space had good AC, the food was tasty, and the cats were so cute. One cat in particular Trisky came over and on her own sat in both our laps and was so sweet I wished I could have taken her with us. If you are an animal lover I recommend stopping by.
Alina Amara★★★★★
It was so cool! It’s really good and important that visitors have to watch a video before entering to make sure they follow all the rules (no picking up the cats, no loud talking, etc.), so the cats stay safe. It was so lovely — the cats are very curious and playful! The staff were incredibly kind, truly amazing 😊
The only thing I was wondering about: I wasn’t sure if the cats have a separate quiet retreat area with sleeping spots. That might be a nice addition, since the café is open for quite a long time, and it would give the cats a calm place to rest 🙂
Tanith Muir★★★★★
Such a lovely cafe! The staff are super friendly and kind. They put the safety and comfort of the cats first which is super important. The cafe has a warm friendly atmosphere and the cats are super cute. I would recommend!
Clodagh Branagan★★★★★
Loved it here! Staff lovely & proceeds go directly to looking after the cats !
Marie is so soft & darling .
Juan is misunderstood but does love a cuddle
Milky is a big playful boy (not friends yet with juan) also the fish is his favourite toy
Rudan is the boss

Alexey Subach★★★★★
Amazing place! It’s really small and the kitchen is open and tiny but everything is made for efficiency there. There was a queue but it moved quite fast. They have tables both inside and outside and both options are nice. Brioche with avocado and smoked salmon was really good - it was really well balanced and there was a good amount of salmon. Not a very sophisticated dish but still great. Scrambled eggs with chorizo and Parmesan was amazing too. I am not a fan of scrambled eggs at all but these were made really well, and chorizo was adding some nice deep and rich flavour. Parmesan topped the experience. What was really nice about this place was that the coffee was really great too. Both the flat white and cappuccino were amazing. The staff were great, the atmosphere was really nice and I definitely recommend this place!
Reem★★★★★
Absolutely amazing breakfast experience at Cokoon Café! The pancakes were the highlight—every bite seemed to bring a slightly different flavor and texture, which made them so enjoyable and unique. The coffee was also perfectly balanced and exactly how we like it.
The owner was there personally welcoming guests, which added such a warm and friendly touch. The open kitchen is right within the seating area, so you can watch the team preparing the food, making the whole experience feel fresh and special.
We even took a cookie with us to try during our road trip. A must-try café in Bilbao!
Ramdas Pisharody★★★★★
Excellent breakfast place albeit small. We had to wait for almost 15 m to get seated. The staff were friendly and the food very enjoyable. I tried Txangurro, the Basque crab dish and really liked it as did my wife who ordered the salmon dish. The Colombian coffee too was very good. Recommended but be prepared to wait.
Anne J★★★★★
Super cute café with very attentive and caring employees. Everyone was very friendly and helpful with questions and requests. We were able to eat gluten-free and the food was delicious. Would definitely recommend!
Rachel Buchholz★★★★★
What a gorgeous spot with delicious food. Everything is incredible! Coffee is great! It’s like a well-oiled machine, everyone moving and working together. It was lovely to watch. The service is wonderful as well. We will definitely be back!

This is a place for true coffee lovers, with high quality beans and equipment. You can order a number of different kinds of fresh coffee as well as whole beans and common coffee gear for home. All the beans are from Colombia. Sometimes there are little pieces of bread and cookies and other goodies.
This is one of the few places in Bilbao that makes top notch coffee with a focus on the coffee itself. And I love that they have cold brew with large ice cubes.
Stefano Squillante★★★★★
Small gem with very nice coffee.
We were going to catch the bus for the Airport so i just grabbed a flatwhite. The barista was super professional and described us the coffee with competence.
Taste was super nice, sweet with a light acidity note at the end. I might be wrong, but I think they use a good quality milk as well.
María Alejandra Bedoya Rondon★★★★★
Among all the coffees I tried out in Bilbo, this was undoubtedly the top specialty coffee in the downtown area, I tried the filter coffee 🙂
It offers high-quality service, a cozy atmosphere, and great service.
Highly recommended, I got 2 bags of coffee (Encanto and Cordillera) to take home (Malta)
Thanks to Luzmila for crafting the best coffee. 🫶🏻

A great spot for breakfast! The toasts were delicious, the portions were generous and the brunch menu offered excellent value for money. The freshly squeezed orange juice tasted great. What really made our visit special, though, was the outstanding service. Geydi was incredibly kind and attentive, making us feel genuinely well looked after. We would happily come back!
Pierrick Garin★★★★★
Had a lovely brunch here, I took the vegan toast (with mushrooms & aubergine) & the acai bowl which were both really good! We took the formula c, which was plentiful for a decent price! Saw the toast with salmon which also looked tasty and big. The waitress Geydi was lovely and gave us great recommedations, both concerning the menu and what to do in the city! Would recommend coming & will be back on ournext stay!

Lovely, calm brunch spot to start our Bilbao trip with. Even though most of the tables were taken, it had a relaxed atmosphere.
The food was really nice and the service was very fast!

Everything was so delicious!!!! The food, the service, the environment! So good!!! If you are the city, give it a try, I promise you won't regret it!
Tips for Enjoying Bilbao’s Coffee Scene
To make the most of your caffeinated journey through Bilbao, it helps to understand a few local customs and practicalities. While the city is welcoming, knowing when to go and what to order can significantly enhance your experience. Here are a few essential pointers to help you navigate the scene like a local.
Understand the Timing: Bilbao runs on a distinct schedule. Most specialty coffee shops open later than you might expect, usually around 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM, and many close in the afternoon before reopening in the evening. Always check the specific hours for your chosen spot before heading out, especially on Sundays and public holidays when many independent businesses remain closed.
Know Your Order: While Spanish is the primary language, Basque (Euskera) is also widely spoken, and English is common in tourist-heavy areas. In specialty shops, you can order a "flat white" or "filter" without confusion. However, if you want a classic, ask for a "cortado" (espresso with a splash of milk) or a "café con leche" (larger with more milk).
Bring Cash or a Card: While most modern specialty coffee shops in Bilbao accept credit and debit cards, some smaller traditional bars or kiosks in the Casco Viejo might have a minimum spend or prefer cash. It is always wise to carry a few euros in coins, especially if you plan on hopping between several spots or visiting a local market.
Look for Local Roasters: Bilbao has a growing number of local roasters who supply many of the cafés on this list. Look for names like Sakona Coffee Roasters or others featured on the menu. Ordering a bag of beans to take home is one of the best souvenirs you can buy, offering a taste of the city long after you leave.
Pair Coffee with Food: Unlike some cities where coffee is a standalone activity, Bilbao excels at the pairing. Do not skip the pastries or pintxos. Many specialty shops source their baked goods from local artisan bakeries, creating a synergy that elevates both the food and the drink. Try a buttery croissant with a light roast or a savory slice of tortilla with a robust espresso.
The specialty coffee movement in Bilbao is more than a trend; it is a reflection of the city’s broader commitment to quality and craft. Whether you find yourself in a sleek, modern space or a cozy, book-lined nook, the care put into the coffee is a constant. It is this dedication that makes exploring the city’s cafés so rewarding.
As you plan your visit, remember that the best coffee shop is often the one that fits your specific moment. Use this list as a starting point, but do not be afraid to wander into a place that catches your eye.
