Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is often celebrated for its historic Vegueta district, bustling port, and year-round spring climate, but the city’s coastline holds an equally compelling allure. Stretching from the volcanic north to the golden dunes of the south, the capital’s shoreline is a diverse playground for surfers, families, and sun-seekers alike.
Unlike the purpose-built resort towns further south, the beaches here possess a distinctly local and urban character. You are just as likely to share the sand with Canarian families enjoying a Sunday picnic as you are with digital nomads taking a lunch break. This blend of city energy and Atlantic relaxation creates a beach experience that feels authentic rather than manufactured.
The geography of the island means that conditions can vary dramatically within just a few kilometers. While one cove might offer glassy, calm waters protected by natural rock barriers, another stretch just around the headland may serve up consistent rolling waves for board riders. This variety ensures that every type of visitor can find their perfect spot.
Water safety is a serious consideration in this part of the Atlantic, and the local authorities have invested heavily in infrastructure to protect visitors. Many of the urban beaches feature lifeguard towers, flag warning systems, and accessible ramps, making them safe and inclusive for travelers with reduced mobility or families with strollers.
The volcanic origins of Gran Canaria also mean that not every beach is a typical expanse of imported golden sand. Here, you will find a fascinating mix of blonde Sahara-imported sand, dark volcanic pebbles, and natural rock pools that fill with crystal-clear seawater at high tide. This geological diversity adds a unique visual texture to your coastal explorations.
Beyond swimming, the city’s seafront promenades are a cultural attraction in their own right. Lined with churrerías, seafood restaurants, and open-air gyms, the paseos connect the beaches seamlessly. Renting a bike or simply walking from one bay to the next is the best way to soak in the local rhythm of life.
Whether you are looking to catch your first wave, snorkel in a sheltered bay, or simply unwind with a book under a palm tree, the capital of Gran Canaria delivers. Below is a curated guide to the most distinctive and rewarding stretches of coast the city has to offer.

This is a beautiful beach that definitly warrants a visit. Parts of the beach have black sand from volcanic rock. Other parts of the beach have regular brown sand.
It is absolutely beautiful any time of the day.
Plus, there are wonderful spots to eat and have a cafe along the sea. The pathway along the sea stretches for quite a distance which offers a great running and walking option.
Martin Michaelsen★★★★★
What a beach this is. The water is great and so are the waves. Renting a beachchair is only 2.5 Euros. Along the beach there is a boardwalk with restaurants and shops and these are not tourists like at all

Soothing place, can sit and relax. You can enjoy the breeze and sea waves hitting the rocks giving absolute pleasure and calmness. Pretty windy. If lucky would find people music playing near the courtyard/Promenade.

More quiet place far away of crowded beaches of the city. Have a small sand beach and many hidden places between the rocks. Also have many panoramic view points for make a great pics of the sea and the waves breaking on the coast. Naturalist and Naturist places for sunbath naked without any control.

The nicest, dog friendly beach og Las Palmas, peaceful nature for a bit of a hike as well. Sunsets are gorgeous here, you can sit on a bench and watch the breathtaking view while you can listen to the music of the waves. My favorite spot on the island 🏝
Phithakphum Sarakham★★★★★
A beautiful coastal spot and beach, but pretty isolated from busy tourist areas.
There is a wooden path which you can walk along the coast to enjoy this amazing landscape. Public toilet is also provided in the area.
Personally, I believe El Confital would definitely be a heaven for those who fancy nice and calm place.

Beautiful spot, nice trail.

A lovely nature reserve beach visited by the locals. A dozen or so people were here to surf but you need to be careful of the rockpools. The beach has a few nooks so you can have some privacy.
This place has an amazing view of the city if you take a small hike up to the top of the rocky hill where you'll find a cross at the top as well as caves built into the hill/cliff facing the beach.
There is a public restroom available, which was locked when we were there, as well as a large parking area which was mostly empty as many people arrived on foot.
Las Canteras Beach

michael panchenko★★★★★
Playa de Las Canteras is a beautiful urban beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain.
It's a popular 3-km golden sand beach right next to the city center, protected by a natural reef that creates calm, swimmable waters. The scenic promenade with palm trees, cafés, and views of the ocean makes it a favorite spot for locals and tourists year-round.
Weather in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Playa de Las Canteras) by season:
Winter (Dec–Feb): Mild and pleasant, highs 18–21°C (64–70°F), lows ~16–18°C. Some occasional rain, but mostly sunny and comfortable.
Spring (Mar–May): Warm and sunny, highs 20–24°C (68–75°F). Low rainfall, ideal for beach days.
Summer (Jun–Aug): Warm and dry, highs 24–28°C (75–82°F). Very little rain, perfect swimming weather.
Autumn (Sep–Nov): Still warm, highs 22–27°C (72–81°F), gradually cooling. Mostly dry with minimal rain.
The climate is subtropical and very stable year-round — one of the best in the world for beach visits.
Robert Paul★★★★☆
Nice beach, good looking clouds and sun views, but you won't see the sunset on the horizon as there are too many clouds on the horizon and can see the mountain or the next island over, Tenerife I believe.. many people on it though, can get very busy especially Friday-Sunday. Places to rent and place volleyball nets. Usually no life guards, but occasionally like when it's packed and also not siesta time there is 1 or 2 lifeguards.
Isabelle Lily★★★★★
Picturesque, beautiful views, soft white sand, Little Rock pools to explore, and free toilets & showers if you take a dip in the ocean.
The location is great (a short walk from the centre of Las Palmas), there’s plenty of shops & restaurants along the beach, and sunsets are beautiful even when it’s overcast.
The mild climate of the island also means you can comfortably stay until late into the evening.
Merve Ure★★☆☆☆
Great beach but honestly Las Palmas is so ugly overall. The buildings look like they’re stuck in 1950s and they don’t do a justice to this place, it would have been so amazing. If you’re looking for an aesthetically pleasing place and you have high standards, Las Palmas is not it.
Lisa★★★★☆
Las Canteras Beach is a lovely place for a walk, even on a cloudy day. We stopped for a coffee along the promenade and just enjoyed the atmosphere.
There are plenty of shops, cafés, and places to sit, which makes it nice and easy to spend a few hours there. It was great to watch the surfers out in the water and people playing volleyball to Brazilian music — it gave the whole area a really relaxed, lively vibe. I especially enjoyed just sitting and people-watching.
It felt like a nice mix of locals and visitors, which added to the charm. Like most cities, there were a few people asking for money, but nothing that took away from the overall experience.
Overall, a relaxing and enjoyable spot to visit, whether you want a walk, a coffee, or just to take in the atmosphere.

It is a small beach located on the east coast of Las Palmas. I visited it in the afternoon on 9 March 2026. Though no one was swimming there, several groups of locals were playing different sports, including volleyball, canoeing and basketball (at a court next to the beach). While the sea view is partly blocked by the cargo terminal, it is quite well-utilised by the locals.

A nice beach area.
Currently they are doing some renovations.

Whether you're a surfer chasing waves, a fitness enthusiast, or someone who just loves a vibrant beach scene, La Cícer at Playa de Las Canteras is a fantastic spot to experience. Hello House★★★☆☆
Public toilets, lifeguards are exactly what are missing along this local and tourist favourite stretch of coastline. Las Canteras is done right here notm.
The amount of taxpayers money spent maintenance of the area requires better services for all visitors who come to try and enjoy the expenditures. The new seating, playground, some signage is nice but definitely not enough.
Nearby new playground has bicycle parking so some new benefits from new money injections.
New signage forgot to remind everyone not to smoke or vape in public! Wow what a stink in the air surrounding the whole area. It is amazing how many people were smoking and vaping along the coastal walk, in and around the seating by the children's playground and along the beach and walls. Despite the coastal wind the air was still full of smoke and vape gas from the crowds.
And let's not forget the nasty pee smells in the walkway tunnels or the amazing lack of handicapped friendly or safe from speeding traffic walkways from bus stops if you choose not to experience the pee tunnels. So much potential still not realized. New signage doesn't remind people not to smoke in public.
Philip Johnston★★★☆☆
Beach is scenic but is of pebbles or slippery rocks so better to look at from the promenade than spend much time on. A volcanic sand beach at the southern end of the promenade is more family friendly.

Looks better than in pictures. Black volcanic sand beach. Mostly locals come here. Perfect for sunbathing. There’s a public toilet and shower nearby.
Perfect to swim with kids because the natural pool is protected by the rocks so no big waves.

Playa de Maspalomas

Blue Ocean★★★★★
Playa de Maspalomas is honestly unreal, and it's a place I keep coming back to year after year. Every time I visit Gran Canaria, I end up spending hours here—the massive golden dunes rolling right into the ocean never get old. Whether you're going for a long walk along the shore, grabbing a cold drink, or just taking in the sunset, the vibe is always perfect. Never gets tired, no matter how many times you've been.
Anika H★★★★☆
It is one of the most convenient beaches in gran canaria. Always sunny and you can rent 2 sunbeds and one umbrella for 7.5€. Only the toilet situation is a little bit tricky. Every "public toilet" cost 1€ to 1.5€. The restaurants are ok, offering more or less the same. But it is ok. It ist definitely touristy.
Legend Crysty★★★★★
Beautiful beach from another planet, behind the sand dunes, the entrance to the water is good, there are bars on the beach (some are in the nudist and LGBT areas where you can have a cold drink naked), the area near the dunes is dedicated to nudists, families and LGBT areas. On a weekend day you would literally get lost among the thousands of people practicing nudism. Before going to this beach, check the weather because it is a windy beach and it can be disturbing.
Highway Video★★★★☆
A very beautiful and different beach. You walk to the beach through soft sand, with large sand dunes behind it. The dunes make the place feel special and unique. The beach is long, clean, and perfect for a relaxing walk or enjoying the sea. I loved the little kiosk on the beach serving beer, cocktails, and soft drinks. There is a place to sit, relax, enjoy a drink and watch the sea.

San Agustín Beach is one of the best on the island: peaceful, beautiful, and home to stunning sunrises you can’t miss. Its gentle waves make it perfect for beginners, and learning with PureSurfSchool is easy and fun. An ideal spot to enjoy the ocean and good vibes.
Hello House★★★☆☆
Very windy, water quality wasn't the best. Lots of steep steps to access from the North approach that are not in the best shape. A few funky swear smells along the walkway and again from time to time when on the beach. Nice outdoor shower area at the end of the wooden walkway however it is not very private feeling as the cafe just across seats people like the showers are a theatre. No visible signage indicating where to find public toilets nearby which may explain the so e of the smells.
ZaraNanny★★★★☆
We just spent 8 days staying in this area and went to this beach most days. For us it was perfect due to it not being really busy and offered simple facilities. Deckchair hire , life guard tower on the beach , a couple of restaurants on the beach front which was handy for coffee etc and we bought items daily and used their facilities. There are no bathrooms on this beach . Just one small toilet block of low quality that is a little back from the beach..

I had heard a lot about Playa del Inglés before visiting and was really excited to see it for myself. With all the hype, we even chose to stay in this area. Unfortunately, it ended up being a bit disappointing. While the beach is long and spacious, it felt like it was missing a certain atmosphere.
For me, places like Anfi del Mar, Amadores, and Mogan Beach are far more beautiful and enjoyable overall. Compared to those, Playa del Inglés didn’t quite live up to expectations, especially when Gran Canaria has so many nicer areas to explore.
The surrounding area also felt fairly average—the shows, cafés, and bars were fine but nothing extraordinary. Even the Hard Rock Café didn’t live up to the standard you’d normally expect
Hanna Kaniushenka★★★★★
The most significant location near the beach is the legendary dunes, where you can take stunning photos♥️♥️♥️

Visited here very early one morning whilst on holiday. Super beautiful, peaceful. Well looked after. Lots of places to eat drink etc around.
Beds were being washed when I was there.
Not much of a sunrise I must say which was dissapointing.
Nice views around however.

What an amazing place to visit, so chilled out with amazing views.
Loads to do, from boat trips, mini golf, plenty of places to eat with a few beers or a cocktail.
We were made to feel welcome everywhere we went and is definitely on my list of places to revisit.

Big beach going down to Playa Maspalomas - approximately 10 k steps. Often only a sandy beach, some areas with many stones. Always sunny or at least good weather. Sometimes a little bit windy.
Playa de Puerto Rico

Piotr Artur★★★★☆
Puerto Rico beach is a solid and convenient option for a day by the sea. It’s a sandy beach with easy access to everything you might need – restaurants, shops, takeaway food, and public toilets are all close by.
Sunbeds and umbrellas are available at a fixed rate of €5 per item for the whole day (as of June 2026), and in the late evening the fee is often no longer collected.
The beach is located right next to the marina, and there are parking areas nearby, which makes getting there simple and practical.
While the setting is not as visually striking, the layout is compact and functional, making it easy to settle in and enjoy the day without overthinking it.
A comfortable, no-fuss beach that has everything you need for a relaxed day by the water.
Mairis Krūmiņš★★★★★
There are a lot of hotels and a port around this beach, so there will definitely be more sunbathers here, but if you like crowds, this beach is for you! The beach is closed from the ocean, so it is calm and there are no big waves! Also, Puerto Rico is connected by a beautiful pedestrian path to Amadores beach, I would definitely recommend taking a walk, the views are beautiful -ocean, cliff, cactus, lizards!👍
Siu Y Lo★★★★☆
I had a quick visit to this beach in the afternoon on 10 March 2026. There were a lot of people sunbathing on the beach. Multiple sunbeds and sun umbrellas made the beach look quite crowded, and the beach is actually not very large. There are also restaurants and tuck shops surrounding the beach. A very commercialised beach.
Legend Crysty★★★★★
Large, beautiful beach with facilities, fine sand, smooth water entry, resort setting, shops, restaurants. You can walk to Amadores beach (25 min).
Highway Video★★★☆☆
We found it okay overall. The beach was clean and easy to access, with plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby, which made it convenient. It’s nice enough for a relaxed afternoon, but it didn’t really stand out compared to other beaches in Gran Canaria. It can also get quite busy, so it didn’t have that calm, laid-back feel we were hoping for.
Essential Tips for Enjoying Las Palmas Beaches
To make the most of your time on the coast, it helps to understand a few local nuances regarding weather, safety, and etiquette. The Atlantic Ocean can be unpredictable, and the urban nature of these beaches means they operate differently than isolated resort strips. Keeping the following advice in mind will ensure a smoother, safer, and more enjoyable experience.
Check the Flag System First
Always look for the colored beach flags before entering the water. Green means it is safe to swim, yellow indicates caution due to currents or swell, and red means swimming is prohibited. The currents around the volcanic reefs can be surprisingly strong, even on sunny days, so respecting these signals is non-negotiable for your safety.
The Wind Picks Up in the Afternoon
Las Palmas is known for its trade winds, which typically intensify after midday. If you want calm conditions for sunbathing or paddleboarding, plan your visit for the morning. Afternoons are better suited for windsurfing, kitesurfing, or simply securing your umbrella deeply into the sand.
Sun Protection is Deceptive
The sea breeze often makes the air feel cooler than it actually is, leading many visitors to underestimate the strength of the Canarian sun. Apply high-factor, water-resistant sunscreen frequently, even on overcast days, and consider wearing a rash vest if you plan to spend long periods in the water.
Embrace the Local Schedule
Urban beaches in Spain operate on a different clock. Locals often arrive late in the morning and stay until sunset, with lunch happening around 2:00 PM or later. If you want a prime spot near the shoreline, arrive before 10:00 AM, especially on weekends and public holidays when the sand fills up quickly.
Use the Public Amenities
One of the biggest advantages of city beaches is the infrastructure. Take advantage of the public showers, clean restrooms, and lifeguard stations available on the main stretches like Las Canteras. If you are traveling with children or plan to spend the entire day, these facilities make the experience significantly more comfortable.
Respect the Marine Life
The rocky reefs and tidal pools are protected habitats. If you are snorkeling or exploring the rock pools, look but do not touch. Avoid stepping on the delicate marine flora and never remove shells or creatures from the water. This helps preserve the biodiversity that makes these beaches so special.
The beauty of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria lies in its ability to offer a genuine city break and a beach holiday simultaneously. You do not have to choose between cultural exploration and ocean relaxation; here, the two exist side by side, connected by palm-lined promenades and the constant sound of the Atlantic.
As the sun sets and the beach bars begin to light up their grills, you will understand why so many visitors extend their stay. The combination of golden sand, volcanic scenery, and vibrant local life makes this coastline one of the most underrated urban beach destinations in Europe. Pack your towel, bring your sense of adventure, and let the tide guide your itinerary.
