12 Best Beaches and Coastal Walks Near Arrecife

Lanzarote’s capital, Arrecife, is often viewed simply as a gateway to the island’s volcanic interior, but this overlooks a remarkable truth: some of the island’s most accessible and rewarding coastal scenery lies just minutes from the city centre. Unlike the sprawling resort coastlines further south, the shores around Arrecife offer a blend of urban convenience, local fishing heritage, and wild Atlantic beauty.

The coastline here is shaped by millennia of volcanic activity, creating a dramatic contrast between dark lava rock, golden sand, and turquoise water. This geological diversity means that no two beaches or walking routes feel the same, even when they are only a short drive or bus ride apart. For visitors staying in the capital, this means you can swap city streets for ocean breezes within a quarter of an hour.

Whether you are looking for a safe, family-friendly bay with calm waters or a rugged, wind-swept path where you can feel the raw power of the Atlantic, Arrecife serves as the perfect base. The area is particularly appealing to travellers who prefer to explore under their own steam, using the local bus network or a hire car to reach spots that feel far removed from the tourist crowds.

Walking is deeply embedded in the local culture here. You will often see residents taking a late afternoon paseo along the promenades, and the coastal paths are well maintained, making them suitable for a wide range of fitness levels. The best time to explore is during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, when the temperatures are pleasant and the paths are quieter.

The following guide focuses on practical, accessible options rather than remote or difficult-to-reach locations. Each recommendation has been selected for its ease of access from Arrecife, the quality of the walking surface, and the overall experience it offers. You do not need specialist hiking gear, though a good pair of walking shoes and sun protection are always advisable.

From historic harbours to natural rock pools and long stretches of unspoilt sand, the coastline around Lanzarote’s capital is full of surprises. Use this list to plan day trips, morning walks, or sunset strolls that will give you a deeper appreciation of the island’s unique coastal character.

Below, you will find a curated selection of the best beaches and coastal walks near Arrecife, each offering something distinct for the visitor.

One of the best hikes in Lanzarote heading to one of its best beaches. I would recommend this hike to everyone with a good fit of any age. Kids can also go with their parents. Wearing good shoes is important on the way down because the path is slippery due to the presence of little rounded stones along the whole descent. For sure coming up is easier and you can manage the one way path in less than one hour if you want to stop to take some wonderful pics. The beach down is named Playa del Risco. It Is Amazing and it is possible to swim there even during the windy days. Almost desert all the times, everyone will enjoy this fantastic natural spot. The parking at the top is good. It is advisable not to leave any valuables in the car but I did not experience any issues like all the cars which were parked there. The path is well indicated but on the way back do not go further to the right because the path is intersecting with another one heading toward the Famara valley which is anyway another good hiking opportunity. I posted a pic showing the intersection with two walkers on the right path. Hope this helps.
Miko★★★★★
Great hike, about 8.5 km, and 450 m descent/ascent of which 350 m are rather steep and on rough terrain. Good hiking shoes are essential but poles are optional. The way down is demanding concentration wise and the way up endurance wise. It took me about 2 hours round trip. The views are spectacular, but the best part is the tranquility of the undisturbed nature once you reach the bottom. The path goes over the ancient lava flows so you can observe various structures such as lava tubes. Recommended!
Norbert Elek★★★★★
I had a spectacular hike along the rim of a volcanic crater.
Kat W★★★★★
What a hike!!! We hiked down to the beach (not for the faint at heart, harder to hike up!) Not many people at all, bring lots of water, a hat and long sleeves for sun protection!!! Took us a good three hrs. We stopped and had a picnic lunch and also walked down to the salt flats! Wear good shoes as the trail leading down has lots of loose rocks!
Timbo Lond★★★★★
The walk to the beach starts at the car that is not very large so arrive early if the weather is good. The path is easy to follow and leads directly to the beach. Good shoes are necessary. I am a fairly experienced hiker and it took me 45 minutes each way so allow more time if you have lots of stuff to carry as the uphill is rather strenuous.

Beautiful rocky view, but nothing to spend a day with kids. Great if your want to see lot of crabs. Few people were swimming but it is at your own risk. Giving 4 stars because there was lot of trash and in general not well maintained.
Detectorist★★★★★
Lovely little area right outside the Hotel we were stopping in. People were fishing, swimming and snorkelling. There was a shower but very rocky.
Helen Hawke★★★★★
This was a pleasant surprise. Very small beach area but feels secluded and private. You can access a nice natural swimming pool area protected by a small reef.
Callum Lott★★★★☆
Keep an eye on the tides. Low tide is the best time to visit this beach. Clear water and awesome for snorkelling or just a swim. The water is much easier to access during low tide.
Abdul Omooba★★★☆☆
This is a rocky beach, no sand at all. Walking and bike path on route, OK to visit but not child friendly.

Greatvspot for a swim. Water in this area is couple of degrees warmer than in the surrounding ocean. Sizeable parking. No facilities/toilets/showers
Olga Leont★★★★★
If it's stormy or cold, it's the best place to swim. The water is still and warm due to natural pool created by the rocks. Highly recommended!
VN★★★★★
Beautiful!! The water was crystal clear. Decent size parking lot but it fills up very quickly.
André van der Wagt★★★★★
Really nice small beach with warm water and small fish. If you want to go for a swim, water shoes are advised.
Lucca T.★★★★☆
It is not a large beach, but rather tiny sections separated by rocks, but all this creates a place with lagoons, shallow crystal water and many places where you can hide and enjoy the sun. A perfect place for kids. There is a quite large car parking and at least during our visit, no crowds.

Avenida Playa Honda, Lanzarote. A beautiful promenade connecting Avenida de LAS Playas, Puerto del Carmen, to Arrecife. A pedestrian and cycle path. Beautiful landscape overlooking the ocean. The stretch runs along the local beaches until reaching Playa Reducto (Arrecife). A flat route suitable for everyone, very sunny. A hat and bottled water are recommended. To make the walk easier, you can take bus number 3 there and back, or you can shorten the walk. Refreshments at Playa Honda include bars and restaurants.
Regina Sánchez Pizones★★★★★

To reach Playa de Papagayo you have to pay entrance fee to Zona Papagayo 3€ for one car. Is worth to pay, at the end of road you will find car park. An on the left Playa de Papagayo and on the right you can entrance smaller beach. Beautiful view from the top, crystal water and nice sand.
Gábor Siklósi★★★★★
Amazing spot, great spot for sunbathing and swimming, clean sandy beach ⛱️ lots of space, recommended to come early. Long journey to get in with the car 3€ entry fee but worth it! Unfortunately no toilets around and cafe/bar looks like closed, the time was here.
Melis Nilgun★★★★★
Amazing beach! There is a 10-15min of road with potholes, cracks, uneven surfaces to reach the beach. Entrance is 3euro per car, not sure if they charge bike access. We had a great time at the beach. It is somewhat protected from the strong wind. Be aware that you will need to take stairs. Not suitable for strollers.
Marius Amariei★★★★★
Extremely pretty! Would come here every time we visit Lanzarote. The 3 euro tax would be a bit more justified if there were some toilets.
Alice stojko saliu★★★★★

A beach just out of the world. This beach is undoubtedly one of the best ever i visited. As you drive towards the north port of the island, you'll suddenly come across a stretch of white powdery sands amongst the black volcanic rubble. Park at the car park and stroll to this wonder of nature. You'll see basically 4 vivid colours: the dark black volcanic rocks (basalt), the whole powdery sands, the green plantation on the sand dunes, and lastly the turquoise ocean. You can swim, snorkel for hours at the heavenly place.
Stuart C★★★★★
What a lovely, nearly deserted beach with a small, convenient car park and nothing else (apart from the excellent scenery). There are several circular stone windbreaks which would make sunbathing even more enjoyable. Pity we only had time for a short visit.
Tomáš Říha★★★★★
Lovely sand beach with only few people and big crabs.
Lyall Hazard★★★★★
Nothing here…. And that’s the attraction. No shops no stalls no burger vans just white Sandy beaches, fabulous stone windbreaker, clear blue see ideal for snorkelling and very private if you want to get your kit off!!!
Michał Zawadzki★★★★★
Beautiful beach, white sand, circular wind shelters made with stones. Great, peaceful place to spend a day, enjoying the views and sounds of ocean. Not recommended to swim - be cautious as there are strong waves, going back to the ocean, might be very risky to allow children swim there. Please take the rubbish back with you, don't spoil that beautiful place. It's sad to see plastics even there.

Lucca T.★★★★★
An isolated place on the island with a road of several kilometers where we do not recommend fast driving and at the end you will find yourself in an area where trails along the coast will lead you to many beaches that are beautiful, hidden between cliffs and isolated from tourist busy places. An ideal place to escape and have great moments on the trail and many local beaches.
Solo★★★★☆
A great place to enjoy the views in 3 directions - to the beautiful beaches in the area, the cliffs or the more or less distant islands. A nice walk that can be combined with beachcombing on the famous Papagayo beach or others. I would give 5 stars for the scenic value, one star less for the access - the road is nightmarishly bumpy on solid rock and is about 6km long which you feel in your bones afterwards and really for a 3 Euro fee they could have done something about it with the thousands of cars probably driving there every day
Robin de Bruin★★★★★
A desolate place just past Papagayo beach. You'll be able to have unobstructed views to all directions, being either mountains, ocean, beach or the neighboring island of Fuerteventura. There is no clear walking path towards this but you're able to visit it by walking in the correct direction. Cars are unable to reach the location.
Matteo Bussani★★★★★
Very nice view over cliffs, the ocean and nearby coves. Park at the Playa del Papagayo car park and start wandering close to the cliff edge towards the south.
Gary McKinney★★★★★
They are absolutely amazing views and very enjoyable walking not to strenuous unless it's very hot weather

Our first time here and we will definitely be back! We had marinated tuna with onions, grilled octopus and fried calamari with tiramisu for dessert. Every morsel was perfection.

Nice little mini beach to wade into the water. It's right next to a hotel and walkway so there arent waves, but it is shallow enough for kids to go in a bit and collect rocks, sand play, etc. There arent public amenities, but several restaurants nearby. The left side is very rocky.
Prithviraj U.K.★★★★☆
Nice little peaceful place with rocky edges and white sands here n there in the pool. Found a few fishes in the sea.

This park needs some TLC. It's more of a sand park, with few benches around. It is close to the marina so make for a good breezy walk. It is lit on the marina side but not so much on the ends. It is about 15min walk from Intercambiador de Gueguas.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Coastal Trip

A little preparation goes a long way when exploring the Lanzarote coast, especially if you plan to combine walking with swimming or photography. The following tips are designed to help you stay comfortable, safe, and respectful of the island’s fragile environment while enjoying the best of the shoreline near Arrecife.

Check the wind and tide before you set out. Lanzarote is known for its trade winds, which can be strong, particularly in the afternoon. A beach that is calm in the morning can become blustery by midday. For walkers, a strong headwind can make a coastal path feel much longer than it is. Tide times are equally important if you want to explore rock pools or walk around headlands, as some routes are cut off at high tide.

Wear sturdy footwear, even on “easy” walks. Many of the coastal paths near Arrecife are paved or well trodden, but lava rock is extremely sharp and uneven. If you plan to leave the main promenade to explore a headland or a natural pool, flip-flops are a poor choice. A pair of closed-toe walking sandals or light trail shoes will protect your feet and give you the confidence to explore further.

Carry more water than you think you need. The combination of sun, wind, and salt air is dehydrating, and there are not always shops or kiosks along the quieter stretches of coast. A refillable water bottle is essential, and if you are walking for more than an hour, consider taking a snack. The dry heat can sap your energy quickly, especially on exposed paths with no shade.

Respect the local environment and wildlife. Lanzarote is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and its coastal ecosystems are delicate. Stay on marked paths where they exist, avoid disturbing nesting birds, and never remove stones, shells, or plants. If you are visiting a natural pool or a rocky shore, be aware that the rocks can be slippery and that sea conditions can change quickly.

Time your visit for the best light and fewer crowds. Early morning is the ideal time for coastal walks near Arrecife. The light is softer for photography, the temperatures are cooler, and you will often have the path to yourself. Sunset is another magical time, particularly on west-facing stretches of coast, but be sure to carry a torch or ensure your phone is charged for the walk back.

The coastline around Arrecife rewards those who take the time to explore it slowly. Whether you spend an hour on a city promenade or a full day walking between fishing villages, the combination of volcanic geology, Atlantic light, and local culture creates an experience that stays with you long after you leave.

Lanzarote’s capital may not have the name recognition of other Spanish beach destinations, but that is precisely its appeal. Here, you can enjoy world-class coastal scenery without the crowds, often with only the sound of the waves and the wind for company.
