12 Best Bakeries Near Real Jardín Botánico

Tucked between the grand boulevards and shaded corners of central Madrid, the Real Jardín Botánico offers a rare pocket of calm. It is a living museum where centuries-old trees, seasonal blooms, and meticulously arranged herb gardens transport you far from the city’s hum. After wandering its symmetrical paths and glass pavilions, the natural next step is to sit down with something warm, flaky, or sweet.

The area surrounding the botanical garden is not just a cultural hub; it is quietly one of the best zones in the city for traditional baking. While Madrid is often celebrated for its tapas bars and taverns, the local bakery scene is a serious affair. Here, breakfast is a ritual, merienda is sacred, and bread is treated with the respect it deserves.

Because this neighborhood borders the literary quarter and the museum triangle, it attracts a discerning crowd. Locals, tourists, and university students all converge on the same counters, looking for authentic sourdough, delicate pastries, or the perfect café con leche. That means the standards are high, and the competition among bakers is fierce.

You will find everything from century-old institutions preserving Castilian recipes to modern workshops experimenting with slow fermentation. Some spots are ideal for grabbing a quick napolitana to eat on a bench. Others invite you to linger over a slice of cake while watching the world pass by on the sidewalk terrace.

Knowing where to go can save you from tourist traps that serve defrosted, mass-produced goods. The best bakeries here rely on quality butter, stone-ground flour, and time-honored techniques. They open early, sell out fast, and often close for the afternoon siesta, so timing your visit is essential.

This guide focuses on the bakeries within a comfortable walking distance of the botanical garden’s main entrance. We have considered the quality of the dough, the atmosphere, the coffee, and the consistency of the service. Whether you need a quick breakfast before visiting the Prado or a relaxing afternoon treat, there is a perfect spot nearby.

Below, you will find a curated selection of the finest bakeries and pastry shops in the vicinity. These are places that deliver on flavor, freshness, and authenticity, ensuring your visit to this beautiful part of Madrid is as delicious as it is scenic.

Maybe the best almond croissant I’ve had in my life so far. There were literally almond slices falling out of the bag—it was that packed and that good. We waited in line for about 10 minutes before getting to the counter, which felt reasonable given how popular the spot is. What we ordered (and recommend): • Almond croissant • Chocolate chip cookie • Cardamom bun Everything was so, so good. The almond croissant is a must—rich, flaky, and loaded with flavor. The cookie and cardamom bun were just as satisfying. I had the matcha latte, and it was fine, but nothing special. I’d probably try something else to drink next time. Honestly, I wanted to try more items, but I had to show some restraint. It was definitely worth the Uber ride. There’s limited seating inside, but there’s a park right down the street with plenty of benches, which makes for a great spot to sit and enjoy everything.

Delicious pastries (the best ham and cheese croissant I have ever had) after being burnt by a bakery we tried to eat at on the first morning that wouldn’t serve food until 10 despite being “open” from 8am and gave us the most horrible coffee, we tried Alma Norma which we’d already scoped out on our pre Madrid guide map. Thank goodness we did, exceptional food, perfect coffee, cute decor and vibe with ambience music, cool interior (decor and temperature) with a couple little high table benches inside and a couple benches outside. We returned every morning during our stay, never had to queue more than a couple people as we were relatively early each morning although Sunday seemed to be busier didn’t mind the wait as the neighbourhood view is pretty and it wasn’t hot yet. On the last day we bought a number of items to take home on the train with us to freeze some and enjoy later! They were accommodating, with helpful recommendations and friendly. Tried ham and cheddar (best ham and cheese croissant ever tasted), almond (enormous, delicious), pan au chocolate (disappointing compared to the rest as pastry is amazing and big and there’s two sticks of chocolate but the ratio feels off balance especially compared to the others), blackberry danish (amazing), chocolate orange pan suisse (phenomenal, don’t bother with pan au chocolate if this is available, so decadent, unique and delicious real orange flavour), ricotta bun (interesting but not my kind of thing, wasn’t expecting a dense cake with ricotta centre) and a quiche Lorraine (amazing pastry, tasty filling, too big for one person also needs eating right away or refrigerating which I couldn’t do so had to eat all).
Gary Kout★★★★★
Amazing bakery! Three of our four choices were sublime - some of the best baked goods we’ve ever had. The lemon poppy cake was a tad dry though. My Americano was very flavorful. Definitely the best coffee I had in Madrid. Unfortunately the staff didn’t notice that another customer claimed my daughter’s iced coffee, but the chai she ended up with was fine. The shop is adorable but very small so limited room to stay and eat. Plenty of outdoor seating in the neighborhood park nearby.
Leo Cosmos★★★★★
I love this bakery. Sometimes I walk 20 minutes from my flat just to come here! The bread quality is exceptional and the prices are very cheap for an independent bakery in Madrid! Sometimes it gets busy, but standing and waiting in queue feels enjoyable rather than irritating in such a warm and welcoming area and amongst such vibrant decor! The staff are always helpful, happy, and quick, and I could go on about this place forever. If you’re in Madrid and looking for a bakery to try, this is the one for you!

Tucked into the heart of Chamberí, this quaint little bakery was exactly where I needed to be on a Saturday morning. Honestly, I’m not sure what more anyone could ask for—the pastries are exquisite. I’ve never tasted anything quite like them. There is little seating but just down the street is a gorgeous square to enjoy the delicious delicacies and watch all the local dogs enjoy their day too! It’s absolutely worth a stop if you’re in Madrid. Just have a little patience, and enjoy the experience. And despite what some people say, the line isn’t just full of tourists—but even if it were, who cares? Good pastries are for everyone.

The shop is nicely decorated and the service is good. Unfortunately, I have to say this is the worst Benedict and Flat White I’ve ever had. The Benedict came cold, and the yolks were over cooked. The Flat White had a thick layer of form on top of it, which was overly whipped. I do love the ambience of this place. However, the food here needs improvements.

It’s a great local place to enjoy breakfast. The portions are generous and super tasty. Their olive oil might be the best I’ve ever had. Highly recommend!

Great place to get incredibly good bread (and that is saying something coming from a German) here in Madrid. The cakes and sweets are also dangerously delicious. You can either sit inside or on the terrace. The friendly staff informed me that they also have brunch now. Will try next time. Update: Back once more and it was great again. Also tried the Salmon Toast this time. Delicious!

Rather homey atmosphere. Went on Sat morning and it was full of customers. Had gianduia roll and cheesecake. Both were decent. Not super super yummy but you won't complain. Friendly service.

It looks cute. However, the experience was not good. The waiters seem stressed even though the place was half empty. I requested a table for one and I was ignored while they accommodated people that arrived after (they take no reservations and the whole lower floor was empty). The food was ok but forgettable. Very lame flat white, eggs and bacon were like in any ordinary cafeteria.
Joe Robinsmith★★★★★
Made it before it got really busy. Food was out very quickly. The Andalusian breakfast with Iberian ham on whole wheat with grated tomato was incredibly delicious. The natural breakfast of yogurt with fruits and seeds was so tasty. Cappuccino was piled high with foamy milk. Loved it.
May Magda★★★★★
Great breakfast spot in Madrid! Excellent coffee, delicious pastries, and a cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend🥰
Wen C★★★★★
Very affordable price with good breakfast, simple and makes you full! It’s a hidden gem in the city center if you want to have some traditional breakfast without paying 20 euros
Maria Mendieta★☆☆☆☆
Maybe I came on a bad day, but the food was terrible. I ordered the Desayuno Americano and it was barely edible. The “bacon” was just heated up slices of ham, so salty it was inedible for me. The scrambled eggs were just ok. The toast was tough and over toasted. The coffee was burnt and again barely drinkable. The juice was fine. The bacon/ham was actually barely cooked at first and I had to send it back. (Attached picture is of the bacon AFTER they refried it, still looks terrible). No apology. Overall very disappointing. Do not recommend at all.

An excellent bakery near Plaza del Opera on a quiet street. Chef Trabanco is a true craftsman. His creations are beautiful and expertly prepared. So good with the perfect balance of flavors and texture. And he's a super nice guy! The bakery itself is a nice quiet spot away from the tourist spots (and the tourists).
Noam Jacoby★★★★★
Inside Santa Eulalia gives you the feeling like being in “little Paris”, with cozy old-world decor, books, plants, and exposed brick walls. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can really feel the care behind the place. The pastries and breads are clearly top quality, made with great ingredients and a lot of attention to detail. I had an excellent cortado with a DELICIOUS hazelnuts bun, the cakes and the breads looked incredible. Service was very friendly and English speaking. The space is quite spacious and with WiFi so you can enjoy the coffee and the pastries and also work there.
Georgios Stefopoulos★★★★★
Excellent place to enjoy a sweet and also they have brunch with eggs! The sweets are just incredible! (Especially pain au chocolates with pistachio and chocolate) Also coffee was good and eggs were really good portion! Totally recommended!
Dhoha Rashed Alshalawi★★★★☆
Loved the sweets, but not the coffee. The cappuccino didn’t taste like a proper cappuccino—it was more like instant coffee and lacked foam. The coffee bar could be more organized and cleaner, especially since the main seating area is right in front of it. On the positive side, the staff are sweet, kind, and provide good service. The decoration and overall vibe of the place are authentic, and the location is great.
NorthCountry Jim★★★★★
Beautiful selection of pastries, breads, small sandwiches. Coffee was exceptional. Lovely inside and friendly and helpful staff.

This is a hole in the wall cafe. All the food we tasted are great. Place is smal but with great ambiance. Try the jamon y queso, this is the best ham & cheese I have tasted so far. Their cheese ball is also good.
Suzy★★★☆☆
I bought two cakes which were quite expensive (the price was indicated) but really good. The problem is related to the service. The lady couldn't speak English (it's alright, I can't speak Spanish after all) but was very impatient, rolling her eyes, sighing and seemed very annoyed ? Sorry I'm just a tourist but next time try being nicer. And she was all smiles and giggles with the local client after. Rude.
Ahmed Hussain Jaffery★★★★★
Fantastic little spot with fresh made goods. Everything was delicious that we came back two more times during our trip. The empanadas are especially good.

A pastry lovers delight. I was pretty sure I wanted to get only their famous chocolate napolitana and it did not disappoint.. decadent chocolate cake (ish) inside a buttery airy puff pastry. Heaven in a bite. Not too sweet and perfect for some one like me who doesnot have a sweet tooth. They have huge lines but they move pretty fast. So dont give up. Also there is no chance of them being sold out since they keep bringing out freshly baked goods. Good place to even bring back baked gifts for friends and family. Centrally located at Puerta del Sol. Highly recommend this spot.
Sitti Aziza Azis★★★★★
La Mallorquina is a lovely café with delicious cakes, especially the Ensaimada. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Definitely a nice place to enjoy a sweet treat.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Visiting La Mallorquina is stepping into a living piece of Madrid’s culinary history. Located in the heart of Puerta del Sol, this iconic pastry shop delivers not only exceptional quality but also tradition and charm that have endured for generations. Their pastries are simply outstanding, fresh, delicate, and crafted with precision. The napolitanas, ensaimadas, and classic Spanish pastries are rich in flavor, perfectly balanced, and absolutely unforgettable. The aroma alone invites you in, and every bite confirms why this place has remained a beloved institution for so long. Whether paired with a coffee or enjoyed on their own, their creations reflect true mastery of traditional Spanish pastry. The service is efficient despite the constant flow of visitors, a testament to its popularity and reputation. La Mallorquina is more than a pastry shop, it is part of Madrid’s identity. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates tradition, authenticity, and exceptional sweets.

04/04 西班牙人擠爆的麵包店,點了一個可頌,點餐要直接跟店員喊 The Pastelería La Mallorquina - Sol is one of the most famous traditional pastry shops in Madrid, located directly at the Puerta del Sol, one of the city’s busiest and most central squares. Founded in 1894, La Mallorquina has become an iconic stop for both locals and visitors seeking classic Spanish pastries in a historic setting. It is especially known for its elegant ground-floor pastry counter and its upstairs café, where customers can sit and enjoy views over the bustling Puerta del Sol. Signature items include napolitanas de chocolate (chocolate-filled pastries), palmeras, milhojas, and a variety of traditional cakes and baked goods. The pastries are typically rich, buttery, and made in the classic Madrid confectionery style. Today, La Mallorquina remains one of Madrid’s most recognizable pastry institutions, valued for its central location, long history, and consistent quality, making it a popular stop for a quick breakfast, afternoon coffee, or sweet break while exploring the city center.
Aaliya Tariq★★★★★
Loved La Mallorquina 🎀 Such a cute bakery with a cozy vibe. We had breakfast here and everything was amazing. The croissants were huge, soft, and slightly sweet, and the Napolitana (especially the cream and chocolate one) was a highlight. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Madrid!

Santo has quietly become part of my routine. The bread is easily the best you’ll find in town. I already have my favorites (the cardamom bun and the canelé), but honestly, the best thing you can do is let yourself try something new each time. Walk in, breathe in the smell of fresh bread, pick something you’ve never had before, and enjoy it slowly. The staff are lovely and there’s a real warmth here, not just from the ovens. And the pastries… truly to die for.

This Panadería is a Hidden Gem in Madrid. Employees were truly kind and had better words that I have encountered for understanding their food. Quality is so invaluable. Texture was Crispy and buttery but not greasy and lean.
Nati★★★★★
I’ve been here 3 times and every time the service has been absolutely lovely. I appreciate that they take their time with each customer to answer questions, give recommendations, and make comfortable conversation. Besides the amazing workers, their pastries and bread are top tier. I’m writing this after eating the Za’atar, Feta, and Sesame roll and I’m stunned. The coquito with the coconut and coffee combination also pleasantly surprised me. I don’t think you can go wrong with anything here.

The chocolate and almond croissant was absolutely delicious, never had anything like that! We also tried the orange donut buscuit and almond/ chocolate biscuits that were crispy, light and full of flavour. I regret not having bought more to take home. I can't reconnect this bakery/patisserie enough.

Tova is a wonderful addition to Madrid. Nestled in a blessed corner of Chamberí, it brings something genuinely fresh to the neighborhood. From the moment you walk in, there’s a sense of care and attention to detail that sets it apart. The bakery is outstanding, and everything we tried was excellent—beautifully made, full of flavor, and clearly crafted with quality ingredients. Unfortunately, I made the rookie mistake of not taking any photos. That leaves me with only one option: I’ll have to come back, try more things, and write another review properly. It’s rare to find a place that feels both exciting and welcoming from the very first visit, but Tova manages exactly that. I’m genuinely happy to have something like this in Madrid, and especially in Chamberí. Looking forward to returning soon. Updated on July 2nd! I’m back at Tova, just like I promised, because, you know, I simply couldn’t resist another round of genius. The experience is, of course, incredible—personalized service, meticulous care, and yes, the products are, unsurprisingly, top-tier. Tova has absolutely raised the bar in this neighborhood, and I’m honestly in awe of what they’re offering.

Pastries are to die for, especially the burek and the raspberry vanilla bun. The coffee was not the best, but keeping in mind it is not a specialty coffee shop. Super cozy small place to dine in, cute decor. Will definitely come back!

Great pastry shop, everything is delicious and has a really good price. Except the personnel is not so nice, they avoid interacting with you as much as possible even though you have to order directly with them and never say thanks or greets customers. Other than that would recommend this place without second guess.

Wow a wonderful little hidden gem in Madrid - amazing pastries, wonderful bread and nice coffee! You have to check this out!
Deniz Koç★★★★★
The smell, the taste, the ambiance, the friendliness of the staff, all is amazing here. I am so happy that they chose our neighborhood to open up this bakery 😍 I already liked a lot Bucolico cafe in downtown but this bakery is even cuter in my opinion 🥰 there are 3 little tables inside and a thin bar for sitting outside with a great specialty coffee. I was so happy when i took the 1st sip of my espresso - ! Finally a smooth & correct taste! I was starting to get fed up of drinking coffee with an unfortunate burnt taste in many “specialty cafes” around Madrid ☺️ their babka and all kind of bizcocho are amazing. You should also taste their bread , they are good at all kinds ! PS. Another huge star would go to the music taste in this local store ❤️

Amazing confiteria and pasteleria! High quality products made and baked in store at very reasonable prices. Must try the alfajors with a cafe con leche!
Oliver Madden★★★★★
This is what you find when you stray off the touristy, beaten path. A really traditional, freshly made delight. Wonderful pastries and confectionery. A nice strong coffee and a view into the kitchen where the magic happens. We accidentally stumbled upon this place, and it was the delicious smell emanating from the doorway that led us inside and eventually devoured apple pie, some sort of caramel pastry and a cheesecake washed down with a simple coffee. Don't go here! Leave it for us and the locals 😉
Lulu Lemon★★★★★
If you’re anywhere near this spot, skip your hotel breakfast and come here instead. Pastelería America is an absolute gem. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating—you feel welcomed the moment you walk in, like you’ve been coming here for years. The food? Outstanding. We had the empanadas de carne, which were perfectly seasoned and flaky, a café con leche that was honestly to die for, and an alfajor that might be the best I’ve ever had. Everything is made from scratch, and you can taste the difference in every bite. It’s a family-owned bakery, and that care and pride show up in both the food and the service. We actually paid for breakfast next door at Meliá Casa de las Artes—and this place was infinitely better. No comparison. Do yourself a favor: come here instead.

Go early for the best selection.
Spanish bakeries bake fresh in the early morning, and the most popular items often disappear by noon. If you want the widest variety of croissants, palmeras, and rustic loaves, plan to arrive between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. This also ensures you get items that are still slightly warm from the oven.

Look for "obrador propio" signs.
This phrase means the bakery has its own on-site workshop or production kitchen. It is a strong indicator that the goods are made in-house rather than brought in frozen from an industrial supplier. Bakeries with an open kitchen or visible ovens are almost always a safer bet.

Don’t skip the savory options.
While sweets are tempting, Spanish bakeries excel at savory pastries too. Look for empanadas, mini quiches, or the classic "tortilla de patata" served in a fresh baguette. These make for a perfect, budget-friendly picnic lunch inside the botanical garden.

Check the crust and the crumb.
A high-quality loaf should have a deeply colored, crackly crust and an airy, slightly chewy interior. If the bread looks pale, uniform, or spongy, it was likely rushed or made with low-quality flour. Artisan sourdough should feel heavy for its size and smell slightly tangy.

Embrace the local schedule.
Many traditional bakeries close between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM for the siesta. If you want an afternoon snack, check the opening hours before you walk over. Alternatively, buy your pastries in the morning and save them for a late picnic under the trees.

Pair your pastry with the right drink.
The quality of the coffee matters as much as the pastry. Look for places that use a proper espresso machine and fresh milk. If you prefer something less intense, ask for a "café con leche" or a fresh orange juice to balance the richness of the butter.

Ask for the specialty.
Every great bakery has a signature item. It might be a specific type of sourdough, a unique filled croissant, or a traditional Madrid sweet like "bartolillos." Asking the staff, "¿Qué me recomendáis?" (What do you recommend?) often leads you to the best thing in the case.

The area surrounding the Real Jardín Botánico is a paradise for anyone who appreciates the simple pleasure of excellent baking. From the crunch of a perfectly laminated croissant to the deep, complex flavor of a slow-fermented sourdough, the options here reflect Madrid’s growing reputation as a world-class food city. Taking the time to visit a local bakery turns a simple coffee break into a memorable part of your travel experience.

As you plan your day around the museums and gardens, leave room for a leisurely stop at one of these neighborhood gems. Whether you are fueling up for a long walk or rewarding yourself after hours of sightseeing, the right bakery provides a delicious, authentic connection to the rhythm of local life.
