Perched atop Montjuïc hill, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) is a cultural treasure trove housing a millennium of Catalan art. From Romanesque frescoes to modernist furniture, the museum offers a deep dive into the region’s creative soul. Exploring its vast halls, however, is a surprisingly physical endeavor that often leaves visitors craving a sweet reward or a savory snack.
The area surrounding the Palau Nacional is not just a haven for art lovers; it is also a gateway to some of Barcelona’s most authentic and historic neighborhoods. Just a short walk downhill, the districts of Poble-sec and Sant Antoni buzz with local life. Here, the scent of freshly baked bread and caramelized sugar drifts through narrow streets, inviting you to rest your feet and indulge your palate.
Barcelona has a deep-rooted baking tradition, blending French techniques with Catalan ingredients. You will find everything from flaky, buttery croissants to dense, rustic loaves of pa de pagès. Many of the bakeries near the museum are family-run operations that have been perfecting their recipes for generations, offering a genuine taste of local hospitality away from the tourist crowds.
Whether you are looking for a quick espresso and a pastry before entering the gallery or a hearty sandwich to fuel a walk through the Jardins de Joan Brossa, the vicinity has you covered. The challenge isn’t finding a bakery; it is choosing which one to visit. To help you navigate the options, we have curated a list of the best spots where quality, atmosphere, and location align perfectly.
This guide focuses on establishments that prioritize artisanal methods over mass production. We have considered the sourcing of ingredients, the mastery of laminated dough, and the warmth of the service. These are places where locals line up in the morning, ensuring that the product is always fresh and rotating.
Because the museum sits atop a hill, accessibility varies. Some of these spots are directly at the foot of the Funicular de Montjuïc, while others require a pleasant ten-to-fifteen-minute stroll through the lively Poble-sec district. All of them, however, are worth the walk for the quality they provide.
Prepare to discover hidden gems that serve as the perfect complement to your cultural excursion. From award-winning croissants to traditional coca de forner, this list will guide you to the finest baked goods in the shadow of Montjuïc.

The pastries were absolutely amazing! We loved them so much that we ended up visiting several of their locations across Barcelona.
The only small mix-up was that I ordered a chai latte but was served a matcha latte instead. Surprisingly, it didn't take away from the experience at all—in fact, thanks to them, I've started to think that matcha isn't as terrible as I always believed haha! Highly recommended.

I visit this place nearly every day. It's a 15 min walk from me. They have the best coffee in the area. Period. And it's one of the better bakeries I have tried. Anywhere. I am a baker so I am super picky. I've tried nearly everything they have and it's all incredible. The cardamomo twist was my favorite... Until I tried the Mico. My 11 year old gets a canela twist every time. My husband says the croissant is one of the best he's ever had. Their focaccia is also amazing, as is their bread which I bring home and make toast and sandwiches with. I also enjoy that you can see them baking in the kitchen. The whole place is warm and inviting.

I’m a bit ashamed to say this, but this was my favorite food experience in Barcelona.
And I’m ashamed because it’s not really a traditional Catalan bakery. But I’m a bakery nerd. I really, really love good baked goods. Baking is such a universal human thing. It’s been around for thousands of years. It’s not a trend. You either know how to bake or you don’t.
Being a good baker in terms of taste, texture, and mouthfeel is not easy. It’s pure craftsmanship. Anyone can open a waffle shop or a restaurant, but starting a proper bakery is a completely different level of commitment.
And I don’t think it’s disrespectful to say that Origo is clearly inspired by Scandinavia. They even have kardemommesnurrer, although with cinnamon in this case, which is very Swedish. And in Scandinavia, we’re quite spoiled with high-level bakeries.
That said, Origo is definitely one of the best bakeries I’ve been to.
Everything is baked in-house, which you can see through the open bakery setup and the windows into the kitchen. Honestly, I wish I could have tried everything on the menu.
We tried four different things.
We started with the vanilla roll. It was really good, but actually the weakest of the four. It had a slightly drier texture compared to the others.
Then we had the croissant. This was probably the best croissant I’ve ever had in my life. It looked beautiful, which already tells you about the craftsmanship. The layering was incredible, the taste was great, and the texture was absolutely on point.
Then we had the Miko. I honestly don’t even know what a Miko is, but it was insane. Super moist, slightly crispy, beautifully layered, and with incredible flavor combinations. We couldn’t get enough of it.
We also tried a square piece, some kind of Catalan-inspired pastry with a crème brûlée center. Also incredible. Soft, flaky, and just really, really good.
I honestly don’t care much about the interior design, the cement floors, or how Instagrammable a place is. That doesn’t matter to me. What matters is the quality, and the level of baking here is incredibly high.
This is one of my biggest recommendations in Barcelona.
My girlfriend and I actually discussed the fact that it’s not very traditional, but I don’t think that matters. Baking is inherently traditional no matter where you are. And this place just does it really, really well.
I went twice, so yes, I might be a bit biased. But honestly, it lives up to the hype.
One thing I really want to add, though.
Since they’re clearly taking inspiration from Scandinavia, I think they’re missing one small but very important piece.
Up here, it’s incredibly common that a bakery offers both something sweet and something salty. And I don’t mean focaccia or pizza slices. That’s not really the same thing.
Nothing beats going to a bakery and getting a sweet pastry and then something simple and salty on the side.
I really think they should consider doing a proper sourdough bun. I’m sure their sourdough skills are already incredible. Serve it with butter, maybe even whipped butter, and then top it with slices of a good aged cheese. Something salty, creamy, maybe even something local and Catalan.
Where I’m from, we call it a “bolle med ost”. Every bakery has it. It’s simple, but it’s perfect.
And honestly, I really missed that here. The sweet options are amazing, but I wanted that balance. Something salty to go with it.
Since they’re already leaning into Scandinavian inspiration, this feels like a complete no-brainer to me. If they added something like that, it would take the whole experience to another level.
Harald★★★★★
The focaccia was very well made 👍🏻 also the pain au chocolate tasted super fresh. It would be great to get some stuffed croissants as well. To sit in, the shop is rather small, but there is a view in the baking room 👍🏻

Very nice design wise place but oberpriced bakery and nothing special. People are working are not paying attention, they have anyways too much people.
Upd: (replying to owner)
The treat of the staff. Treat you and look at you like [bad]. I tried to come several times.
Also, if i want to have just coffee - not bakery - why i have to keep all the queue? I think it’d be more logical to have separate queue for quick orders.
Upd:
Have it a chance since I live one block away. Was coming few times and felt fine.
Today again this mess with service. 1) one lady before me, payed already and wanted to buy coffee pack - the cashier made her to stay all the line again 🤨 2) also, somehow people behind me ordered coffee equal to me but were serviced first. Idk, I feel there is a big room for improvement in this place, I felt like Saturday mood was spoiled.

A Russian Pekarnia in Spain. There is a mix between the traditional russian food and the traditional Spanish food. On my first visit i just had the classics; Samsa, Cheburek with cheese and Napoleon cake which was very fresh. For my next visit i will try khachapuri ;). The coffee is also good. Definitely a place to return over and over ... Of course they speak Russian and Spanish

It was amazing to finally have some good chebureki and syrniki! And the syrniki weren't too sweet, but complimented perfectly by the jam and sour cream.
A great place to get a taste of traditional Russian (or I'd even say, Soviet) cuisine 🙂
Ekaterina Bolshakova★☆☆☆☆
Been eating here several times - food was okey. Until yesterday, when I ordered pelmeni and spent the night hugging the toilet throwing them up bit by bit. And yes, I’m sure it’s their food as it’s the only thing I ate that day.
Avoid at all costs, that’s a Russian roulette game: food poisoning or life.
Oh, and also I’m pregnant. If I get listeria in several weeks I’ll of course be suing them.

But to be honest, I'm a little disappointed, but apparently I visited this place on the wrong day 😅 Smile guys, smile, positivity attracts positivity and good luck! ❤️

While looking for a traditional spot serving Spanish breakfast we stumbled upon this small-sized restaurant/cafe. We ordered a traditional egg/potato tortilla as well as a raspberry croissant. The portions weren't large however the food they served us was of high quality. All the dishes seemed to be freshly prepared on-site.
The tortilla was tender and very fluffy but the croissant was extremely good! In fact one of the best we've ever had. It could be slightly less sweet for my personal taste. We were also given extra tomato bread to share free of charge which was also quite tasty.
The staff at the till was helpful and spoke good English. The local offers both seating inside and outside. It isn't too spacious but it's clean.

Definetely a sheer pleasure and for sure you will eat Pasión 🙂 The housemade sandwich was tradional handmade with love and one of the best i ever had somewhere. Thanks for the nice welcome and warm service a family run-business with heart - highly recommended / Una recomendación absoluta!

Our favorite bakery during Barcelona stay. We came here every morning. I liked that this bakery offers egg dishes with quality pastries which are not common to see at the most of the bakeries in Barcelona. We paired egg potato tortillas (quiche type) with their delicious fresh pastries. Coffees were great too. Ensaimada and raspberry croissant and nutella berliner are the must!

We visited this place 3 times during our short trip to Barcelona. It was amazing, very good coffee and delicious food. Small baguette with Iberico was divine. We will definitely come back when we are in Barcelona again.

Very nice bakery/café, you can have some nice breakfast. The sandwich was VERY good, very crispy bread, very fresh ingredients.
I also ordered a Tortilla de Patatas, it was als good, but it didn't exactly match my taste.
They also gave us small bread pieces with tomatoes.
Overall good experience 🙂

Absolutely loved this place. Tried a couple of the sweet and savoury pastries. Lovely homemade taste. Been in Barcelona 5 days and tried many local delicacies but for snacks / light treats on-the-go, this actually tops them all! Very friendly proprietor too. Well done Italy (unexpected)

Donatella Salento Bakery is a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away in a small curving street in the Gothic Quarter - but it is well worth a stop. An authentic Southern Italian experience with Puglian products (including fresh pasticciotti) and serving delicious Quarta Caffe, which is also available to purchase in ground bags, as Donatella is one of Quarta's official resale partners (and the only one in Barcelona).
The owner was very kind when I came to ask about the coffee after she had only just reopened the shop after some time away, and I will definitely be coming back when they are fully restocked.

I stopped in to try the local pastries and wasn't disappointed. The dessert is absolutely delicious! The dough is incredibly airy and crispy, and the filling itself is very tender, not too sweet, and there's a really generous amount of filling inside.
Besides the dessert, I ordered sliced bread with various seeds. It was incredibly fresh, with a pleasant crust and very aromatic a perfect option for every day. The staff is very nice and welcoming, and the service is pleasant and fast, which immediately lifts my spirits

I visited Baluard Barceloneta and ordered a ham and cheese croissant, something I’ve always wanted to try, and it did not disappoint. It tasted amazing, I honestly could have eaten about ten of them.
I also had a chocolate brownie which was really tasty as well. The café itself had a lovely vibe, with dim lighting, comfortable seating, and a really relaxed atmosphere.
The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, even though I don’t speak a word of Spanish, which made the experience even better.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this place for great food and a nice café experience in Barcelona.
Rogeric Zhu★★★★★
I absolutely loved this bakery.
Since my hotel was just one block away, I stumbled across this place on my very first day. The young lady working here wear matching uniforms that give them such a Mediterranean vibe.
All the breads are displayed behind glass windows, and it’s total eye candy for anyone who loves European‑style artisan bread.
After bouts of indecision, fighting back my hesitation and slowly working through it, I finally settled on what I wanted to try: a baguette sandwich with Spanish ham and arugula, topped with what looked like either flaxseeds or sesame seeds.
The young lady rang me up quickly, slipped the sandwich into a paper bag, and twisted the two top flaps of the bag into signature little horn‑shaped folds before handing it over.
I opened it and took a bite. The crust had a firm, chewy texture, with slow‑building wheat aroma, plus the toasty fragrance of those seeds — whether flax or sesame — flooding my mouth. Just when I thought that was as good as it got, the savory saltiness of the ham hit, followed by the rich, creamy depth of the cheese.
I don’t know if this is the most authentic Spanish bakery around, but as a first‑time visitor to Spain, I was genuinely blown away. That said, getting this bakery’s bread as my very first bite after arriving in Spain almost feels unfair — it’s set the bar so high that I won’t be able to experience Spanish bread in gradual, layered fashion.
rated by maryam • food critic★★★★★
Baluard on Provença stays at the top of my list because the team actually keeps the room cool and dry, a small miracle in Barcelona’s summer. Walk in and the modern-rustic bakery opens into a bright back area filled with greenery and plenty of seating, while a separate counter up front moves the take-away line quickly.
The temperature control pays off in every bite. Pastries come out crisp and flaky, never limp. The almond croissant shatters perfectly, buttery without feeling heavy, and the lemon pop cake surprised me in the best way, light and bright with just enough zest to keep me going back for one more forkful.
Service seals the deal. Alida greeted us with the kind of warmth that makes you feel like a regular, offered tasting notes on a few local specialties, and treated each order with care. I am already planning a return trip to work through the rest of the Spanish pastries and snag that triple-chocolate croissant I eyed on the way out.

Not really a sit down place but there is a small wooden bar with a couple of stools where I had my delicious coffee and fresh cinnamon roll. Service was very friendly and the breads they have there look absolutely incredible. Will be back to try them next time I'm in Barcelona!

The staff was very cheerful and kind, and above all, the bread was exquisite.
Most people go for take-out, but there are two seats inside where you can relax.

Very nice and elaborated pastries.
They have a lot of different flavors and shapes. The staff is very kind and professional.
The dark moon was nice very chocolate, with a good mix of all the flavors from the external part to the inside mousse.
The pistachio was interesting. The pistachio mousse with the crusty pistachio was very good. Not sweet and feel very good. However the inside marmalade of orange, passionfruit and yuzu was good on its own while the mix of this flavor with pistachio together was not the best mix i was able to test. The outside shape was very good, white chocolate with valrhona chocolate for sure.
Anyway, taste and flavors are very personal, hence it is best for you to try and make your own opinion
In all case this is a very good pastry for Barcelona, price are on the upper side as you can expect for this kind of work.
The pistachio (festuc) was 14 euros
The dark moon was 9 euros
The cheesecake was 9 euros
The 10 blueberries financier were 13,50 euros
The kouign amann was 2,30 euros
The roll of pistachio and orange was 7,50 euros
As well to take in mind, if you order through delivery service app like Glovo, the price are 10% more expensive than public price in the shop. Probably they do that to save gross margin on the Glovo commission fees. Not very ethical but why not, most restaurants seems to do that.

We visited Patisserie Hofmann with pretty high expectations, given its popularity. The location is excellent and very convenient—easy to find while walking around the area. Another major plus is the pricing; for such a well-known brand, the prices are completely reasonable and affordable. Service was also on point; the staff worked quickly, so you don't have to wait in line for too long, which is always a pleasant surprise.
Visually, the pastries and cupcakes look absolutely stunning. They immediately catch your eye with their beautiful presentation, vibrant colors, and rich toppings, making you expect an explosion of flavor. Unfortunately, that's exactly where the disappointment lay. The cupcakes themselves were quite dry on the inside, even though they look incredibly moist and juicy at first glance. The texture definitely didn't live up to their promising appearance.
The main downside, however, is the space. The interior is extremely cramped and tiny, with only about three available seats. Because of this, it's almost impossible to sit down comfortably to enjoy a cup of coffee or eat your treats on-site. It feels much more like a grab-and-go concept, which slightly takes away from the overall experience. Great presentation and location, but the dry taste and lack of seating leave you with rather mixed feelings.

Edible art at its finest!!! DELICIOUS! Would make an incredible gift! Beautifully ornate, immaculate presentation that comes in an aesthetic gift box and bag. Honestly the most delicious desserts!!! I tried the “Limited Edition” and the “Festuc” (Pistachio). WOW AMAZING! I loved both! Absolutely worth the money. I got these as takeout to go.

The pastries at Hofmann Bakery were the best I’ve ever had. They were incredibly flaky, soft, and delicious. My favorites were the pistachio and orange pastries, and I also tried the plain one. Everything was amazing—highly recommended! 😋

Incredible pastries and patisserie, kind of glad it's here otherwise it would be taking my money regularly! I ordered a cheesecake croissant and mascapone croissant (recommended by the lady as it's their best seller) they both were filled perfectly. The cheesecake had a lovely balance between the tartness of the fruit against the cream filling. The mascapone croissant I could fully understand why it's their best seller, again not too sweet and lovely balance (I like to warm my pastries up) so made it extra special. I also ordered dark moon and romantic and honestly such beautiful patisserie. The romantic was my favourite out of the two but it brought back childhood flavours for me. Definitely recommend the romantic if you like white chocolate and raspberry. I really wanted to try the strawberries and cream as well because that looked delicious!

One of our favorite bakeries and a place we keep coming back to. The pastries here are excellent, and the croissants are flaky, buttery, and consistently fresh every time we visit.
We've been here many times and the quality has always been very consistent, which is one of the reasons we return so often.

If I could do it all over again, I’d buy two of everything.
The ensaymadas were unbelievably light and fluffy, with delicate, airy layers and just the right amount of sweetness. The xuixos were just as memorable - crisp on the outside, filled generously with smooth cream, and not overly sweet.

I ordered a croissant normal and a ensatmada cabell d’angel, both of them are really soft, the cabell d’angel has really nice filling. Absolutely love it, they’re just nicest pastry i’ve ever tried.

The prices are a bit higher than a usual bakery, there's usually a pretty long line, but the wait was definitely worth it because you can tell how their products are handmade and very fresh. The chocolate inside the croissants we had wasn't melted properly (first time it happened), but the ensaimada was delicious! So good! Would love to go back and try their other pastries, they all look super tasty.

What a hidden gem this place turned out to be! I tried the ensaimadas with cream and absolutely fell in love. Yes, I really mean it! The staff were warm and friendly, and everything I tasted was spot on. It’s a fantastic bakery overall. I didn’t get the chance to try the bread, but it smelled incredible. Definitely something I’d go back for. It was so good it made me want to move there, just so I could eat their ensaimadas every single day!

This is hands down the best bakery in Barcelona! It's lively every morning, but absolutely worth the wait. The seating is cozy and limited, yet the charm and energy of the place make up for it. Prices are reasonable, and the fresh pastries and sandwiches are delightful--they even offer the option to toast or heat up the sandwiches. The coffee and cappuccinos are fantastic, too. You can watch the bakers at work through the windows, and the smell of freshly baked bread fills the air. I highly recommend starting your day with breakfast here!

Best breads in the city without a doubt! Their baguettes are incredible so do other breads and bakery. You can buy ready sandwiches for a picnic at the Barceloneta beach but you can also buy a bread and complement the stuff from supermarket to make your own sandwiches, as I like with mozzarella, avocado and tomato. They also have a cafe just across the street where you can buy coffee and pastries, which is also possible to have a seat and chat or work.

These pastries were amazing! I was skeptical at first (as they are on the pricier side), but honestly they are worth it. You can tell they really put thought and care into the flavors they choose. And I’ll be dreaming about that rhubarb pastry. The focaccia is also super fluffy.

Great service, amazing pastry! Light and fluffy, not too sweet at all. Loaded with fresh strawberries, and the hint of lemon was such a pleasant suprise! Definitely recommend!

Vanilla roll is very good. The custard filling is satisfying and not too sweet. Bun could be more soft though.

So nice I had it twice! The crème Catalan pastry was insanely good, I went back 2 days later for another one. Gooey custard and flakey buttery super fresh pastry. Honestly in the top 5 pastries of my life. Coffee was great too. Went to two locations both good.

Hit or miss. Som items are really good like the bread, the sandwich and the snacken. The pain au chocolate (napolitana) is mediocre (expected a chocolate bar the French way).

Finally an authentic French bakery in the area and easily the best one around. Everything is made fresh on site and you can really taste the quality. The viennoiseries are light and buttery, the baguettes have that perfect crunch with a soft inside. So glad they finally opened!

This bakery was great! The vibes were right: they had iced matcha, they had a variety of baked goods ranging from fresh bread to sweeter things like almond croissants and matcha bread. They also accepted visa, had a restroom and they had an outside area really close to all of the shopping boutiques. Would definitely come back again!

My first time in Barcelona and saw good reviews about this place. Luckily, there’s a location 2 blocks away from my hotel and went there every morning for coffee and almond croissant - they’re fantastic. They have so many selections. I wish they sell their coffee cups as I wanted to grab a couple for souvenirs. Staff were very nice and friendly. I highly recommend!

A lovely café, honestly. They offer a variety of baked goods that are healthy and fresh. It was a bit difficult to communicate due to the Spanish language barrier, but the staff were very friendly and respectful. I really appreciate their great service.

Pain au chocolat was to die for!!!!!! We had pizza too. The bread for the sandwiches was a little hard. Either way I want to come back for more pastries.

Cafe amb llet here was very good. Service was nice and fuss free. Their bocadillos were also good.
Tips for Choosing the Right Bakery Near MNAC
To ensure your culinary detour is as rewarding as your museum visit, it helps to know what to look for. The sheer variety of baked goods in Barcelona can be overwhelming, and not every shopfront with a display case offers the same level of quality. By following a few local habits, you can easily distinguish a tourist trap from a neighborhood institution.
Time Your Visit with Local Schedules
Barcelona runs on a different clock than most of Europe. Bakeries typically open early for breakfast, but many close for a few hours in the late afternoon before reopening for the evening rush. If you want the widest selection of pastries and bread, aim to visit between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. If you are looking for an afternoon snack, be aware that many ovens shut down between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, leaving limited stock.
Look for the "Forn de Pa" Signage
In Catalonia, a true bakery is often labeled a "Forn de Pa" (bread oven). This designation indicates that the establishment actually bakes its own dough on-site rather than simply reheating frozen industrial products. If you see a wood-fired oven in the back or a constant stream of locals buying baguettes, you have found an authentic spot.
Prioritize Seasonal Specialties
Catalan bakeries are deeply tied to the calendar. Depending on when you visit the museum, you might find specific seasonal treats. Around Easter, look for "Mona de Pascua," a cake often decorated with chocolate feathers or figures. In the summer, try "Coca de Sant Joan," a brioche-like flatbread topped with candied fruit and pine nuts. Asking for the seasonal specialty is a surefire way to get the freshest item in the shop.
Don’t Skip the Savory Options
While tourists often focus on sweet croissants and cakes, the true test of a Catalan bakery is its savory selection. Look for "Coca de Recapte," a flatbread topped with roasted vegetables like escalivada (smoky eggplant and red pepper) or sardines. Empanadas and mini quiches are also staples that provide a more substantial lunch option before you head back up the hill to the museum.
Check for Chocolate Quality
If you are ordering a croissant or a "xuixo" (a deep-fried, sugar-coated pastry filled with crema catalana), inspect the chocolate or cream. High-quality bakeries use dark chocolate with a high cocoa percentage or thick, yellow custard made with egg yolks. If the filling looks pale, watery, or overly greasy, it is a sign of low-quality ingredients. A great bakery will be proud to tell you where their chocolate comes from.
Exploring the bakeries near the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya is more than just a coffee break; it is an extension of the cultural experience. Just as the museum preserves the artistic heritage of the region, these local ovens preserve the culinary heritage. Taking the time to walk through Poble-sec or Sant Antoni allows you to see a different side of Barcelona, one that is lived in and authentic.
As you plan your itinerary, remember that the journey down the hill is often as memorable as the art itself. The contrast between the grandeur of the Palau Nacional and the humble warmth of a neighborhood bakery perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Barcelona. So, give yourself the time to wander, follow the scent of butter and sugar, and discover a flavor that will stay with you long after you have left the gallery walls.
