The area surrounding the Musée d’Orsay is a treasure trove for art lovers, but the sensory experience shouldn’t stop the moment you exit the grand Beaux-Arts railway station. Just steps away from the Impressionist masterpieces, the 7th arrondissement and the neighboring streets of Saint-Germain-des-Prés are home to some of the most refined baking institutions in Paris.
Whether you have just spent three hours admiring Monet’s water lilies or you are planning a picnic along the Seine, you will need sustenance worthy of the setting. The French concept of goûter—the afternoon snack—is taken very seriously here, and the local bakeries deliver with precision. From award-winning baguettes to delicate, jewel-like pastries, this neighborhood is a destination for culinary art in its own right.
However, navigating the sheer volume of options can be overwhelming for a visitor. The streets are lined with shops that all look tempting, but not all are created equal. To help you avoid tourist traps and mediocre coffee, we have curated a list of the most exceptional spots within walking distance of the museum.
In this guide, you will find everything from historic institutions that have served Parisians for over a century to modern patisseries pushing the boundaries of flavor. We have prioritized locations that offer not only exceptional baked goods but also convenience for the traveler on foot. You will find options for a quick croissant, a luxurious sit-down dessert, or a loaf of bread to take back to your hotel.
Each recommendation is based on a combination of local reputation, ingredient quality, and proximity to the Musée d’Orsay. We have walked these streets and tasted the goods, ensuring that every entry meets the high standards expected by both Parisians and discerning visitors.
So, lace up your walking shoes and bring your appetite. The transition from visual art to culinary art is a short one in this historic district.
Before we dive into the specific addresses and their specialties, it is helpful to understand the rhythm of a Parisian bakery. Many of these establishments close early, and the best selections are often gone by mid-morning. Planning your visit around these hours will ensure you get the freshest and most sought-after items.

My fav spot in Paris!!! Come here every time I visit Paris and their baked goods are superb. Consistent! Service is excellent. Their croissants (Avec beurre) superb! Their drops are the best!!! Flaky. Just the right amount of chocolate and filling. And their chocolate viennoiaise is perfect! Love this place. Merci. 💋

The Perfect Paris Bakery Experience
This little corner bakery was one of the highlights of our Paris vacation and easily our most memorable food experience.
Everything was exactly what you’d hope for from a classic Parisian bakery. The croissants were outstanding, the sandwiches were fresh and delicious, and the pastries were simply amazing. Every morning, it was the perfect place to start our day.
What made the experience even better was the incredibly friendly and welcoming staff, who always greeted us with a smile.
If you’re looking for an authentic neighborhood bakery with fantastic food and warm service, I couldn’t recommend this place enough. We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in Paris!
Levent Bulusan★★★★☆
Stopped by Gosselin around lunchtime and it was packed — a serious queue out front, which already tells you how popular this place is. I grabbed a bacon & mozzarella sandwich and it absolutely delivered.
Even as a tourist, it felt like I made the right choice instantly. Everything tasted fresh, well-balanced, and clearly made with care.
If you walk by and see the line — don’t hesitate, just join it. Whether it’s a sandwich, a pastry, or at the very least a croissant, you won’t regret it.
Lorena★☆☆☆☆
After telling the lady 2 times what I want, and almost giving me the wrong sandwich (the more expensive one 🤓) she forgot it in the oven and it was carbonisé. They just took advantage I was in a hurry and didn't have time to check but i really wish i returned and throw it at you. They basically gave me a croque ca davre, not a croque monsieur
Update: yea, we talked. And i want the other visitors to know about my experience and your disrespect. Have a croque monsieur day!

Loved it so much we went twice in one day. Near the Musée d'Orsay. I'd recommend their crisp, delicious baguettes and their incredible tarte aux framboises.

We passed that small and lovely boulangerie in the late afternoon and spontaneously bought 2 butter croissants 🥐 and also 4 eclairs.
What should I say..... everything was just devine.
Original tone of my teenager son:"This is the best and most delicious eclair I ever had" and I had to agree.
The lady in there was very friendly and even we ate everything shortly after leaving, it was packed very carefully and beautiful.
Would definitely recommend this little treasure and will go back when in Paris again.
Katelyn Miller★★★★★
We were only in Paris for a day and a half but this was truly a highlight of our stay back in May 2025. Maison Galland was across the street from where we were staying so the concierge recommended it. I stopped in at least three times during our short stay. The croissants and pan au chocolat were fantastic and fell in love with a simple turkey sandwich. Everything was reasonably priced. The madame at the counter was so kind, patient, and understanding with my very limited French. We hope to visit Paris again and will definitely be back for more delicious adventures. Merci!

Fantastic little bakery!
Their brioche à la fleur d’oranger is spectacular! Their viennoiseries are amongst the best I’ve tried.
I love that they sell bite-size versions of crowd favorites like croissants, apple turnovers, and pain au chocolat so one can try multiple things without over indulging or wasting food.
Devon Wescott★★★★★
Delicious! The ladies behind the counter are so kind and patient, especially with those of us who don’t speak French, and the pastries were a delight. The quiche is not to be missed. We will be coming back here as many times as we can before we leave Paris!

2025: We took away the croissant au beurre to taste test with bakeries in the area and were really impressed. The croissant had the most light and crispy exterior and airy soft interior. After each bite the croissant came back to its near original height. The combination of taste/texture/appearance made it the winner. This time compared to last year there were ~5 patrons ahead of us in queue. It’s popular! 2024: Sourdough baguette made from corn, buckwheat and wheat was crunchy outside and soft and dense interior. So good! (5⭐️) We tried the original croissant and a pain aux raisins and those were okay. (More bread like) We visited on a weekday before 8am and we had time to peek at the full set of offerings and choose something. Soon after a queue of 5 patrons gathered so we felt some pressure to get our order and move on out. Appears to be popular with regulars.

I bought a TooGoodToGo meal to try something new. The shop was easy to find. Staff were polite. The food was tasty, good variety and value for money. For €5.99, I got a seeded chicken sandwich, a tuna sandwich, a croissant, an apple turnover, a matcha cookie and a currant bun.
P.S. the chicken is halal but it’s worth confirming at your visit.

Everything we ordered was delicious and the service was quick and friendly. It's quite affordable too. They have halal options!

It’s a local pastry shop located in the middle of the street. I bought the éclair passion, which was quite standard — nothing very special, so I wouldn’t expect too much from it.
However, the shop offers many different kinds of desserts, and there is a good variety to choose from. You will likely find something that suits your taste if you enjoy French pastries.

Very decent baguette and very good service despite being one of the more busy boulangeries. But most of all what I liked was the extensiveness of their sandwiches. There’s something for everyone.

A huge thanks to the team at Bulangerie du Musee for taking such wonderful care of me and helping me choose all the perfect pastries that me and my family needed to begin our very first evening in Paris.
Even though you were almost about to close, you still took the time to help me with kindness and warmth. Your beautiful pastries made our first evening in Paris truly magical and added such a special taste to our first memories of this wonderful city.
You know what you did for us. Thank you for your generosity, your care, and your incredible pastries.
Magical moments, made even more special by you. Thank you!

Fantastic little boulangerie! For those that don’t know (I didn’t), boulangerie means everything is baked fresh in house.. and boy can you tell! Everything we tried was fantastic. Pair that with a great cappuccino plus wonderful customer service and you have yourself an awesome little shop.

Bonjour!
This was the very first bakery I visited, first time in Paris, and this was the go to spot for my friend and I every single day. From Baguettes, croissants, pastries, to coffee. Very busy but the queues were moving quickly. There is no place to sit so its all take away. Delicious pastries with a lot of variety. We had a pistachio éclairs & a plain butter croissant for only 4.5£! Eclair was full of fresh, mildly sweet cream that tasted indulgent & pistachio-y. & the croissant was so light and flaky. Absolute bangers!
Kristy★★★★★
Wow. This place is still drawing a queue for the croissant award it won back in 2018... eight years ago! Is it still worth the hype? My answer is a definite yes.
Keeping both the quality and the volume this consistent for so many years is no small feat. People simply wouldn't still be lining up if the croissants weren't exceptional. And let's be honest, there have been eight other winners since then, so it's not as if there aren't alternatives.
I was there at about 9.00 am. There was a short queue and it moved surprisingly quickly. They've had years to perfect the system, and it shows. Don't let the line put you off. You won't be waiting long.
I don't really understand the complaints about the lack of seating or atmosphere. It's next to a metro entrance and a market. It's a working bakery, people!
Do what the French do. Grab your croissant, pick up a coffee nearby, then wander to the nearest park or along the river and mindfully enjoy one of the best croissants you'll ever eat. Bonus points for doing it without an influencer photo shoot in sight (looking at you, La Carette!).
The croissants are handmade and baked throughout the day, so there's a good chance yours has come straight from the oven. Eat it immediately. Don't save it for later. This is one of those moments that's worth enjoying exactly as intended -- straight black and white paper bag.
And at just €1.20? That's Parisian public service if you ask me.
I'd happily line up again.
TIP: Find 'Square Danielle Mitterrand' a tiny gated public-garden where you can eat your croissant in. Less than a 10min walk away. Do some google research on this wife of former French President François Mitterrand. She was a liaison officer in the French Resistance.

Went here due to tons of reviews saying this is the best place to grab a Croissant and it did a good job 🤓. The Croissant and Pain au Chocolate is crispy, freshly baked and buttery. It doesn't sugary like the one i had in Germany and that shocked me. The "real" Croissant is what my French friend told me about this place and the prices are very reasonable. 🥖
There was a staff also helping people getting the cake first when there is a long line. Perfect help👍🏻
However the baguette was a bit cold when i bought it, i couldn't feel the taste that i was hoping for and really hard to eat 🥲
But overall it still worth it.
Mohammed Alasad★★★★★
We tried the croissant, and it was absolutely delicious. It had a perfectly crispy exterior with a soft, airy interior and a rich, buttery flavor. It was served slightly cold, but it was still clear that it was made to a very high standard. I highly recommend trying it.

Croissant tasted really good! Fresh & tasty! I would recommend it but make sure to pair it with something warm! Hot chocolate or coffee would be great!
Line was not that Long since it was raining staffs were fast! But I would say not that friendly expect the one in the cashier! Maybe they were tired already but still! Got confused who was really serving but in the end it’s the Food that matters 😅

I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical walking into a bakery with an English name in Paris, but Smith completely won me over. The croissants were incredibly fresh and flaky, the coffee was excellent, and even the juice stood out as truly exquisite. A pleasant surprise all around, and proof that great quality speaks for itself regardless of the name. I’d happily come back again.

Friendly service when we stopped for a cup of tea and a cake on a cold afternoon in January. A good selection of fresh sandwiches and quiches. A range of cakes, cookies, cheesecake, even scones were available. We chose Paris Brest ( as suggested by the server) and a tart tatin. Both were good. On a warm day tables are available outside on the pavement. We were happy we’d crossed the road from the salon de the’ opposite.
Jette Wittenberg★★★★☆
This bakery is nestled on a charming Parisian street full of lively cafés and restaurants. They offer a great selection of both sweet and savory pastries. I had the salmon, avocado, and cream cheese bagel - it was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of saltiness and creaminess. A great spot for a midday snack or light lunch. Highly recommend!
Moon Rabbit★★★★☆
A local bakery tucked inside the Rue de Buci pedestrian area, offering both savory items and desserts that look absolutely tempting and at reasonable prices too.
We picked up a lemon tart, a strawberry tart, and éclairs. The classic lemon tart stood out in particular: the crust was crisp, the lemon filling smooth and layered with flavor, delicious. The éclairs, filled with either chocolate or caramel cream, were also excellent, the shell was crisp, and the rich filling packed the entire éclair.
Hareesh Gottipati★★★★★
We stopped by Smiths Bakery in the Latin Quarter and really enjoyed it. The lemon cheesecake was as good as people said, and the chai latte? Easily one of the best we've had—and we've tried quite a few in our travels!
Just a quick note: like many places around tourist areas, they do charge a bit more if you sit inside. But sitting outside and watching the world go by makes it a nice experience overall. The only thing that could be improved is the service—it could definitely be a bit friendlier.

Great place to have breakfast and brunch!!!
This bakery has many reasons to be voted for 5 stars:
- Great variety of pastries (Try the almond croissant)
- Vintage environment reminding something from old Paris times
- Great location near the Eiffel Tower
- The staff is very kind and helpful
- There are tables to eat in, which is something you can’t find easily in Paris
- Fresh & tasty bread baguette
It was my first experience eating in Paris and I am happy for that!

First off the ladies at the counter were quite rude, they laughed at us when we didn’t understand something they said, and we asked them what was in one of their pastries and they barely answered super vaguely. The cappuccino didn’t taste like coffee and the hot chocolate wasn’t good. Prices were decent and the pastries were good. Place is cute though.

Tasty coffee, wide choice of pastries, nice vibe, they put our croissants on dirty board, not even on a napkin. No WC. Eclaires are not in the refridgerator.

My go to daily bakery. Evening baguettes Tradition are out just before 4pm. Baguette cereal only in the mornings - don’t get them for the evening. Staff speaks English but please start with a Bonjour. Fresh tarts/pies are displayed cut and displayed whole. Get those as they are made that day. Other tarts are kept on the shelf’s until it is sold and can sit for a few days in the open. Lunch lines are long but move fast. Make sure you take a look at what you want before getting in line. Breakfast lines can be long between 9 and 10am but moves fast.

Best croissants I have had so far in Paris! Super nice French owner who is also the baker plus works behind the front desk. He has been here for many years and restaurants come to him for deliveries. Best croissant of my life!
While trying to hide from the pouring heavy spring rain I ran across what looked like a small not that fancy looking place. But something about it felt warming and I went in.
I was told the tales of "you never had a croissants if you did not have one in Paris". I was not expecting much as this placed did not look fancy, and I thought ok, first time it will be ok, I am sure I will have many more that will be amazing, but I was wrong.
Nothing cane close the beauty of this croissant! Other places I tried felt blunt, either not crusty or not fluffy enough.
The old man running this place is a master baker. Now only one thing keeps me alive in London, the thought that I want to go back and try the rest of his things, can't wait!

While walking around Saint Germain looking for a breakfast stop, I was mainly interested in something to takeaway. I stopped into Maison Mulot after a recommendation I received.
The display case is full of beautiful breakfast items, including various brioche, croissants, and small tarts, all of which looked very tempting.
I ended up ordering an almond croissant, a cheese brioche and a coffee to go. Service was good and fast.
The almond croissant filling was very tasty and moist. Unfortunately, the outside was a little overdone and instead of flaky, it became slightly hard. Nevertheless a decent breakfast item overall.
The brioche was very soft with melted cheese on top. Nothing special but definitely a nice savory option for the morning.
Coffee was just okay, not something particularly memorable.
Overall, still a decent place to stop in Saint Germain for a quick breakfast snack to go.

My friend and I have been here twice on our trip to Paris. We stumbled up on it and decided to have lunch there. We both got the parisian sandwitch and it was delicious! The bread was crispy outside and soft on the inside and the ingredients in the sandwitch were fresh. We came back the day after for lunch as well and got the same sandwitches. There was only one chair available but the staff brought my friend a chair to sit on. Sending love from Finland❤️

Practical Tips for Your Bakery Tour
To make the most of your culinary exploration near the museum, a little local knowledge goes a long way. Parisian bakery culture has unspoken rules and peak hours that can significantly impact your experience. Understanding these nuances will help you eat like a local rather than a tourist.
Bring Cash for Small Purchases: While most modern patisseries accept credit cards, some traditional bakeries have a minimum spend for card transactions. Having a few euros in your pocket ensures a quick transaction and is often appreciated by busy staff.
Know the Difference Between a Boulangerie and a Patisserie: A true boulangerie focuses on bread and must bake on the premises, while a patisserie specializes in pastries and cakes. Many shops are both, but if you want a classic baguette, ensure you are entering a shop that prioritizes bread making.
Respect the Queue System: Parisians take queuing seriously. Upon entering, note who is waiting and do not jump the line. It is also customary to greet the staff with a polite "Bonjour" upon entering and "Merci, au revoir" when leaving.
Plan for Early Closures: Unlike restaurants, bakeries often close in the early afternoon and remain closed until the next morning. If you are planning an afternoon snack after a late museum entry, check the closing times to avoid disappointment.
Ask for a "Tradition": If you want the best possible bread, ask for a baguette tradition. This designation means the bread is made with only the four basic ingredients—flour, water, salt, and yeast—and contains no additives or frozen dough.
Consider a "Formule": Many bakeries offer a lunch deal, or formule, which includes a sandwich, a dessert, and a drink for a fixed price. This is an excellent way to save money while sampling multiple items from the menu.
After you have made your selections, the best way to enjoy them is the Parisian way: al fresco. The Seine is merely a two-minute walk from the museum entrance. Grab a paper bag filled with pastries, find a spot on the quay or in the Tuileries Garden, and watch the boats go by as you eat.
The neighborhood around the Musée d’Orsay proves that Paris remains the undisputed capital of baking. Whether you are biting into a flaky croissant or savoring a complex, multi-layered dessert, you are participating in a tradition that is as culturally significant as the paintings hanging on the gallery walls just around the corner.
