For many visitors, a trip to Colmar begins with the postcard-perfect image of half-timbered houses reflected in the Little Venice canal. Yet, beyond the cobblestone lanes and stork nests, there lies a deeply practical need: finding quality groceries. Whether you are renting a self-catering apartment in the historic center or living in the surrounding Alsatian suburbs, knowing where to shop is essential.
The local food retail scene here is surprisingly diverse, ranging from massive hypermarkets on the outskirts to compact urban express stores. Your choice will depend largely on whether you prioritize local Alsatian specialties, organic produce, or budget-friendly bulk buying. Fortunately, Colmar offers excellent options for all three.
In France, the supermarket is not just a place to buy food; it is a cultural institution. This is where you discover the regional cheeses, the local wines, and the specific cuts of meat that define Alsatian cuisine. Shopping like a local means understanding which chains offer the best value and which specialize in premium or niche products.
However, navigating the outskirts of a tourist-heavy town can be tricky if you are unfamiliar with the geography. Many of the largest stores are located in commercial zones (zones commerciales) that require a car or a bus ride. Conversely, the city center offers smaller, more accessible options for daily necessities.
This guide is designed to cut through the confusion and direct you to the best retail experiences the city has to offer. We have evaluated these locations based on product freshness, price-to-quality ratio, accessibility, and the availability of regional products. Our goal is to help you shop efficiently, whether you are stocking a fridge for a week or just grabbing a picnic lunch.
Below, you will find a curated list of the top destinations for grocery shopping in and around Colmar. We have included a mix of large-format hypermarkets for comprehensive shopping trips and smaller markets for quick, high-quality pickups.

Very good place for shopping with great choice of authentic french wines with great prices. Some of the wines you will pay mote in tourist shops and here prices are way better. Also there's great choise of food.
Lin C.★★★★★
This is the best supermarket close to Colmar old town, just 5 mins walk. The goods there are fresh and cheaper, compare all food shops inside the old town. Many varity for wins, my most flavor one is Alscar Pinot Gris, price is only Eur6.85. The meats here are fresh, but more nice is in the Wed market located outside the old market at the early morning. The cheapest tomato you can find in this supermarket.

Says it's open until 20, but I was forbidden entry at 19:53! What is that? Why say it's open until 20 then?!

Went to this place for shopping today, as it was marked as open on Google Maps. But everything was closed due to easter, and even on a closing day, every parking place was taken 🙁

Decent range of items reasonably priced. Was only self service counters when we went but there was somebody to help when it needed age verification so this worked fine.

Parking lot for free, staff ugly. Card reader defect, personal always only shaking head, no hint, always requesting again for the ECcard, maximum stupid... Next time would prefer to spend my money in a gas station for 3times more money instead of coming here again..

Got everything I needed. Didn’t seem dirty to me, see precious reviews. Nice selection of fruits and veg, good freshly baked bread and anything else you might need. Good prices too and friendly staff. Will come back another time!

A great place in Colmar for a big grocery shop. Unlike smaller convenience stores, this Leclerc is well-stocked and offers good value with frequent promotions. The store is clean and organized. There are many security cameras throughout the store, including near shelves, which may feel intrusive. Some shoppers might feel uncomfortable with the level of monitoring.
Jah Patchotepong★★★★☆
Good size, eventhough not the hyper market like other places in france. Plenty of products here. Bread section could be better.

A big supermarket. You could basically almost get everything there. Parking is free. And ita also very spacious. There is also alot of small different store in the building itself

Shop itself is fine. But one woman who works as cashier is unbearable! She harassed a 96 year old man who just needed to sit down for a minute. She made him re-enter the store and exit through another exit where he had to wait for 10 minutes w/o an opportunity to sit down.
Manas Datta★★★★★
I had never heard of this chain of hypermarkets in France. But there was one near one Airbnb and we were blown away. So specifically this one on Houssen is extremely large and extremely well stocked. If you're in the area, you will not need to go anywhere else for anything you might need from clothes to food to books to electronics. They also have electric car charging points and a petrol station with the cheapest fuel in the area. Highly recommended.
Parker Smith★★★★☆
Great grocery store that is massive. The only issue is that being so large has its downsides. The shopping carts are all located outside the mall itself, so make sure you get one before entering. Also, finding things in the store (as a tourist) has its challenges, so just anticipate being there longer than you would have expected.

Huge store with groceries and all sorts of other goods.
Very good selection, good prices, plenty of fresh food. Tasty.
Thibault van Rees★☆☆☆☆
Rude staff, terrible communication! We got kicked out of the store while in line for the bread. Apparently it was closing time, but instead of telling the costumers they were closing (or even closing soon), they just stopped helping people IN THE QUEUE and started throwing all the bread and pastries in the trash in front of us! Now we’re going home with only half a meal.

As ever a great store by UK standards but 3 staff on the tills is a nightmare. We stocked up on some of our favourite wines before moving on.

Hey Chow★☆☆☆☆
I visited this shop to buy groceries, but after noticing the price of smoked salmon was different from what I expected, I asked the cashier if I could remove it from my purchase.
What followed was genuinely the worst service I have ever experienced. The cashier began speaking rapidly in French with a visibly dismissive attitude, and it was clear she was teasing about me and my parents to other customers in the queue. We felt mocked and humiliated.
To make matters worse, the cashier and the customers behind us pressured us into paying for an item we clearly did not want. We eventually gave in under the weight of side‑eyes and public pressure—it was an incredibly uncomfortable and unfair situation.
I sincerely hope this was an isolated incident, but it left a very sour taste and has completely put me off returning.
Axel Kuhnert★★★★★
Amazing and huge supermarket. Plenty of stuff to choose from, amazing selection of meat, cheese and wine.

This supermarket offers everything you could need, with an impressive wine selection. A standout feature is the large washing machines located on the side, which are perfect for tackling bulky laundry while you shop.

Great location for a quick stop in Colmar! The store is on the smaller side with higher prices, and the selection is limited, but it is very convenient when you need to pick up a few things quickly. It’s also very clean and well-kept.

Great little market for necessities in the middle of Colmar
jov★★★☆☆
The cashiers were really nice and overall the store has everything you need. However the fruit section is horrible. The fruit shelves were already half empty when we went to the shop at 9am. Half of the fruit were rotten, there was mole on fruits and most of the bananas were half opened. So in conclusion it seems like they do not bring fresh fruits every day and just leave old fruits

I expected it a bit bigger. I didn't like the women's clothes section it was a bit too boring for my liking. But it has a bit of everything..books, bagagge, make up, toiletries... The supermarket area is pretty big and has a variety of stuff ranging from food to house hold. The lady at the till was very helpfull.

Wonderful shop with everything - from beauty products and clothes to homeware and a huge food department filled with anything and everything imaginable. Can get a bit pricey though.
Got to love the trolley escalators!

The staff were extremely disrespectful and rude. On the way to the self-checkouts they stopped us and told us to go to other checkouts and we had to queue again. Also, the way they do things is very wrong. It is a business very far from the understanding of the service sector.
Philip Parry★☆☆☆☆
Disgusting staff, the rudest I’ve ever encountered in any supermarket. Just been to buy some provisions and an old dirty man with a moustache serving at the till starts talking aggressively in French at me saying “….you’re in France, speak French”. Yes I can understand every word you pathetic filthy moron. My wife who was buying a tomato at the self serve till was then shouted at by a female member of staff for no reason. We walked out. Shop elsewhere if you can people, seems Monoprix Colmar employ the absolute rudest filthy people in this store, you’ve been warned!
I am in no doubt this happened because we were English.

Marché Couvert de Colmar is a wonderful place to experience local flavors and the authentic atmosphere of the region. The historic building itself is beautiful, full of character, and perfectly complements the vibrant market inside.
There is an excellent variety of fresh local products, from cheeses and pastries to meats, wines, and regional specialties. Everything is presented with great care, and the quality of the products is outstanding.
What makes this market special is the atmosphere: lively without feeling crowded, friendly vendors, and a genuine local feel that makes it much more than a typical tourist attraction.

We are always happy when shopping in Leclerc. Not all are perfect, but they are all good at least. But this E.Leclerc here IS definitely a perfect place to shop.
During our stay in Colmar we did our grocery shopping here and came on the day we left for home and filled our trunk with their products.
It's a very good sized Leclerc with plenty of parking. Staff is helpful and friendly.
Besides all the basice grocery items like veggies, fruit, rice, pasta, water, dairy products, soda, beer, wine, pet supplies and household products they got a good outdoor and electronics section.
And then very nice meat, cheese, seafood and charcuterie counters. Great products! We especially enjoyed the meat here, they even got real KOBE beef! And the duck confit is divine. Couldn't get enough of that, great stuff! Lots of nice, local products. Also great to buy some good french Rosé and of course Crèmant from the Alsace.
Really enjoyed shopping here. You get a lot of value here, great prices for great quality food. We'll be back again in a few days to bring some more food to get home. Luckily Colmar is only a 90min ride away - a short drive across the border.

Essential Tips for Grocery Shopping in Colmar
To make your shopping experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible, it helps to understand a few local nuances regarding logistics, payment, and timing. Here are some expert recommendations to help you shop like a true local and avoid common tourist pitfalls.
- Mind the Sunday Closures: Unlike some other European countries, most large supermarkets in Colmar are strictly closed on Sundays. If you arrive on a Sunday and need groceries, look for smaller "Carrefour City" or "Casino" shops in the tourist center, which often have limited morning hours.
- Bring Your Own Bags: France has largely phased out free single-use plastic bags. You will need to bring your own reusable bags or purchase sturdy, reusable ones at the checkout counter. This is standard practice for locals.
- Weigh Your Produce: In the fresh produce section of larger stores, you must weigh your fruits and vegetables using the digital scales provided. Simply place the item on the scale, select the corresponding picture on the screen, and a barcode sticker will print for you to place on the bag.
- Look for the "Origine France" or "Alsace" Labels: If you want to ensure you are buying local, scan the packaging for "Origine France" or specifically "Produit en Alsace." This is particularly important when buying wine, Munster cheese, or choucroute (sauerkraut).
- Separate the Hypermarkets from the Markets: For a big stock-up shop, drive to the hypermarkets on the periphery (like those in Houssen or Wintzenheim). However, for daily bread, cheese, and charcuterie, use the local bakeries (boulangeries) and butchers (boucheries) in the center. The quality of fresh bread in a supermarket rarely matches a dedicated French bakery.
Shopping for food in Colmar is an integral part of the Alsatian experience. By venturing into these stores, you gain access to the incredible raw ingredients that make this region a culinary powerhouse. From the rich cream used in local sauces to the specific grape varietals of the vineyards, the supermarket shelves are a treasure trove for food lovers.
Ultimately, the best supermarket for you depends on your specific situation. If you are staying near the station and need a quick snack, an urban express store is perfect. If you are cooking a large family meal in a countryside gîte, the hypermarkets offer unbeatable variety and value. Use this guide to plan your route, and you will eat very well during your stay in Colmar.
