17 Best Cafes in Lyon

Lyon sits at the culinary crossroads of France, a city where bouchons serve rich, traditional fare and contemporary roasters push the boundaries of specialty coffee. While the capital of Gaul is famous for its wine and offal-heavy cuisine, its coffee scene has undergone a quiet revolution over the last decade.

Today, the city boasts a diverse tapestry of third-wave coffee shops, artisan roasters, and cozy neighborhood haunts. Finding the perfect spot to enjoy a flat white or a meticulously brewed V60 can be overwhelming if you are unfamiliar with the city’s geography.

The Presqu’île, Croix-Rousse, and the 7th arrondissement each offer distinct atmospheres and varying approaches to the craft. Whether you need a quiet space to work or a sunny terrace to people-watch, Lyon has a venue tailored to your needs.

This guide moves beyond the generic tourist traps to highlight establishments that prioritize bean quality, milk texture, and atmosphere. We have evaluated these locations based on their sourcing practices, barista expertise, and consistency.

You will find options ranging from minimalist Scandinavian-inspired spaces to warm, wood-paneled rooms that feel like a living room. The independent coffee culture here is deeply intertwined with the city’s love for gastronomy.

Many of these cafes partner with local bakeries to provide pastries that match the high standard of the espresso. Expect to find innovative brunch menus, vegan options, and a welcoming attitude that encourages you to linger over your cup.

Our selection spans the hills and the rivers, ensuring that no matter where your exploration takes you, a great brew is never far away. We have personally visited these locations to assess the grind, the pour, and the service. This is not just a list; it is a curated roadmap to the best caffeine experiences the city offers.

Prepare to discover hidden courtyards, basement roasteries, and sun-drenched corners where the art of coffee is taken seriously. Whether you are a local looking to expand your rotation or a visitor seeking the perfect souvenir beans, the following recommendations will guide you to the finest cups in Lyon.

I had a fantastic breakfast at Slake Coffee House near Place des Jacobins. I ordered the pancakes, fried eggs with bread, and a coffee—everything was absolutely delicious! The pancakes were light and fluffy, and the eggs were cooked to perfection. The coffee is clearly high-quality and was the perfect wake-up call. The atmosphere is cozy and modern, making it a great spot to start your day in Lyon. Friendly staff and great service. Highly recommend!

Great specialty coffee in Lyon. Tasty Americano, friendly staff. Love the decor — especially the 2-person bathtub sofa facing the street, such a cool and totally Instagrammable idea. Full menu with V60, Aeropress, Chemex, batch brew, oat/coco milk options. Atmosphere is 5/5. Good for work or a quick break. Visited in August

Excellent cappuccinos, hot, strong and smooth, perfect! Very friendly and welcoming staff. Absolutely magnificent chocolate chip cookie, we shared but shouldn't have. Indulge get your own cookie! Located on a nice little side street with seating inside and out. Highly recommend 🇨🇦

Fantastic and often packed Coffee House. The staff is so polite and the Coffee and Food are both delicious. As a world traveler I highly recommend this place for your breakfast and coffee needs!
Alex★★★★★
A beautiful café close to Place des Jacobins in central Lyon. There is ample indoor seating, with a smaller outdoor terrace. Across two visits, I tried the homemade lemonade, savoury pancakes, and an iced coffee, all of which were excellent. Wi-Fi is available on weekdays, when laptops are also welcome, but neither is available at weekends.

The latte here is absolutely amazing! For a good latte, the beans need to have a bit of acidity, and they nailed it. I’ve always loved coffee with bright acidity, so both the long black and the latte were fantastic. I spend about five months a year in Europe, and this is honestly the best coffee I’ve had in Europe so far. The step(or owner?)takes an oder is always so kind and welcoming with a lovely smile. I’m definitely coming back again tomorrow! ☕💛

One of our favourite cafes in Lyon, a charming location up a small hill with seating all around the window, decent scones and good cappuccino

Axelle is the best. She had wonderful service and the best coffee in town. She’s awesome and nice person to boot! She even worked with my elementary level Francais (last time was 15 years ago in Etats Unis) and spoke French to me when she clearly spoke great English!
Diane★★★★★
Great vibe and delicious cafe latte, chai tea and scones! We have really enjoyed including this cafe into our daily routine here in Lyon! Great service, coffee, and vibe!
Stephanie Loo★★★★★
I highly recommend the banana bread!! That was a winner! For the coffee - unfortunately not my favorite bean profile and I find it too sharp and sourish. But I really want to compliment the barista, who was really busy but took the liberty to show me patience and kindness when I had questions. Keep smiling and the great work!! 🌟

We stopped here for brunch, and it was such a wonderful experience. The food was really good. When I had questions about food allergies, for example whether the pesto I ordered contained nuts, one of the managers made a phone call on the spot to the person who had prepared the food off-site to confirm the ingredients. It was a thoughtful gesture that went above and beyond, and it was very reassuring. In addition, the restaurant's mission and the way it integrates its staff, with developmental disabilities, made the whole experience especially heartwarming and meaningful. We'd happily return. The croque monsieur was amazing!

Loved the homemade lemonade 💛 Great service, lovely atmosphere, and a wonderful day overall. Special thanks to Sixteen, the assistant manager, who was incredibly kind and calm. She has clearly trained the team very well, and it shows in every detail of the service. Highly appreciated! ✨
Megan Korsman★★★★★
Such a nice vibe. I love how inclusive the restaurant is. Great service with very friendly staff. The Croque Monsieur was amaaaazing 😍
Loo Yeo★★★★★
At 13 rue Ferrandière, Café Joyeux sits in the Presqu’île as a street-facing café-restaurant: coffee, lunch, pastries, takeaway and terrace service placed within Lyon’s daily rhythm. Opened here in January 2022, the branch carries a defined model through that public form. People with mental and cognitive disabilities are part of the team, supported through paid café roles and training in hospitality. From the outside, the address looks like another stop in the city’s commercial flow; its difference comes through what the branch is built to sustain: service, skill, contact and return custom. In a labour market where disabled people remain more exposed to unemployment, that everyday café frontage gives the model a concrete place in city life.
Yian Guo★★★★★
The happy yellow store front and the irresistible aroma lured me in. I enjoyed the croque monsieur very much, but I would have preferred a lighter dressing on my salad, and a less toasted bread. The service was very nice and our server placed the food on our table with great attentiveness. I find the concept of the store very lovely.

We had two great breakfasts at Nuage Cafe while visiting Lyon in mid-June 2026. Delicious food, nice outdoor setting on a small corner near the Hotel de Ville. First day was sons' first meal in France! Pictured - Pancakes, Egg Benedict Cloud.
Hassan Attieh★★★★☆
The vibes and the staff are really nice. However, the pancakes and crepes are not this special. The dishes are aesthetically pleasing but for example the pancakes and the syrup that comes with it had a pretty average taste.
Tiffys Guide★★★★★
Great for brunch, one of the few places you can actually reserve in advance and decide whether terrace or indoors The food is simple but tasty, and I recommend the duo of pancakes 🙂

We had a great time at Nuage Café, enjoying a tasty breakfast with friends on a Saturday morning. A special thanks to Kenza for the warm welcome and excellent service, as well as to the rest of the staff for making the experience so pleasant.

Had a brunch here before heading out to the train station. This cafe was quaint, quick service, with gastronomical food. We had one of their preset menus and French omelette with cheese. Phenomenal! This omelette will make you miss France…I can’t wait to eat this again. Their apricot juice was also so fresh and yummy. Would come here again! They were very accommodating with my baby and stroller! Extra plus 🙂
Alexandra Mills★★★★★
Quality coffee - love the taste of the beans they use for their espresso and flat white. Cozy ambiance too. Happy that it is open early in the morning too - great start to my day. The gentleman working there was very kind too. Will definitely keep coming back!
Laura Watson★★★★★
We stumbled upon this place and so glad we did! The owners are welcoming and their food and coffee excellent! I am celiac and she took care to accommodate me. The omelette was the best I’ve ever tasted and the coffee was perfect. Thank you so much! Highly recommend stopping here.

It’s a good place to have your breakfast, it is possible to choose between coffee and croissants options and Omlette for example

As they say in France “Une pépite”! My new favourite place! I highly recommend. Warm welcome, lovely chats, great coffee and great food! This is a family owned business and you can tell it means a lot to them to welcome their customers. I am so glad I have found this place! I will make sure to make a weekly trip to this café whenever I can! Thank you 🙏🏽

Very cute little coffee shop with decadent options for coffee and cakes. If yoy have a sweet tooth, this is the place to go! We ordered oat milk lattes, and they were out of oat milk so very latte, offered us a sweet treat (each!) to make up for it. We got a pistachio flan which was very good. Only reason I have it 4 stars is because the coffee was too sweet for our likings. But I imagine most would love them.

Went on a sunday at around 9 am. Staff is really nice, really friendly what a pleasure. They also had matcha which I was on a hunt for. We ordered 2 croissants and a orange juice too it is fresh so it tasted amazing Would definitely recommend!!! People, customer service 10/10

Every morning we had an egg muffin for breakfast. We also tried a poke bowl and a French flan. Everything was very good. Service was great. Everybody had a big smile on their faces.

Great coffee shop in center . Open even on sunday. Was looking for good coffee and maps helps us to find it. Barista offer great espresso for free to try . Had 2 filter coffee with my friend and was good. It would be better if you manually make either v60/chemex .

We had the charcoal latte (super nice), the chataigne latte (very sweet and not enough coffe), the pumpkin spice latte (a lot of whipped cream but otherwise great), and a chai latte (nice as well) as drinks. The brownie and the babka were good as well. The yoghurt with granola could have had mor granola and the bacon egg bun was not what we expected ever but still tasty.
Katerina Dishkova★★★★★
One of the cutest and calmest cafés in Lyon! First of all, the atmosphere is so calm and the baristas/servers - so chill; it was a super nice welcome. Second of all, the drinks were incredible! I loved the piccolo (with oat milk), having a firm and strong coffee taste. The matcha latte was also good; well made. Lastly, although there aren’t many options for breakfast/brunch, the things we got were quite tasty - the eggs & bacon bun and the yoghurt & granola. I particularly liked the latter - the yoghurt was so good, the granola tasted homemade (didn’t have much sugar), and it’s well enjoyed with the ‘coulis au choix’ - fruit puree, in my case with the tropical fruits mango and passion fruit. It’s also nice that they have discounts of certain things, once you purchase a savory dish. We had a wonderful experience and would definitely revisit if we come back to Lyon (also to try some of the appetizing-looking sweets)!
Alex Walsh★★★★★
Recommended by a friend of mine when I first arrived in the city, probably one of the best of Lyon’s many cafés!! Great cookies. Cute inside with a great terrace too and the upstairs is perfect for getting cozy with a book. Note: I believe no laptops on weekends.
Louis Fechoz★★★★☆
A very nice and cozy coffee shop. The prices are not cheap, especially given the size of the food. The 4.50€ for a small slice of cheesecake is definitely exaggerated, but the coffee was nice and and service was good, and it's in a very nice part of Lyon.
Daniil Makhmudov★★★★★
Even on a rainy day you‘d like to visit this place with all kinds of tea, amazing people and tasteful toasts❤️‍🔥 Don’t forget to take a look at the fusion watch😍

Was told about this place by a local and it was really great. The cinnamon rolls were soft and sweet and delicious, as were the cardamom rolls. If you can’t decide which just get both. The space was cozy and the coffee was pretty good. There was indoor and outdoor seating and free WiFi.
LauraEmma Danova★★★★☆
Really cute coffee shop in a Scandinavian style. The coffee was a bit overpriced for the quality but the interior and atmosphere was really nice especially the ABBA BATHROOM🫶🏼🥳

I tried a few pastries from this café and they were all good, cardamom rolls and some coconut cake. Coffee was also excellent, friendly service and comfortable place. Fair prices for Lyon.

Cozy, friendly and authentically Swedish gem in the heart of Lyon! Gorgeous pastries and delicious coffees. Atmosphere is warm and buzzing with life. A great little find on the fringe of the main district of Lyon. Worth the walk for coffee lovers, I sampled a lot of places and as an Australian I'm picky about my coffee. This was great, food also good, great atmosphere, a mix of French modern cafe with a nice touch of Scandi / Modern design. Menu decent, service great, English speaking staff, recommend a visit when in Lyon.
Ribeye★★★★★
Looking around the area for coffee before a visit to the museum, and decided to stop by Fika Cafe for a coffee. Although the entrance was a little hard to spot as they had some exterior works going on. The flat white was delicious, and the cafe featured cozy seating areas and a delightful in-house dog. The staff were warm and welcoming, making the visit enjoyable. Thought the inviting ambiance and solid coffee made Fika Cafe is a great spot to grab a cuppa.

Momento was the perfect place for our birthday celebration! 🎂✨ The place itself and, especially, the wonderful people working there played a huge role in turning our birthday party into such a magical evening. Everyone was so kind and welcoming, and it was especially nice that the staff speaks English, which made everything even easier. The atmosphere is beautiful — very nice, chill, cozy and charming. And the food was absolutely amazing! Everything we tried was delicious, and the prices are really good for the quality and experience. We had such a lovely time at Momento and will definitely come back. Highly recommended! ❤️

Great coffee shop in the heart of La Croix Rousse in Lyon! I've visited several times and the coffee is always excellent. The brunch dishes are both abundant and delicious. The space is cozy and perfect for catching up with friends or enjoying a book. Best of all is the staff: they clearly put thought and care into everything they offer, always looking for ways to innovate and make you feel wonderfully welcome. Plus, they have a Uruguayan heart, which makes it extra special 🙂

Lovely pet friendly spot for breakfast or brunch! Here’s why I’ll definitely come back: 🥞 Delicious breakfast options – from fluffy pancakes to French-style croque-monsieur and even cupcakes! 🥑 Well-rounded menu – I had a set that included a pancake and a toast with salmon and avocado. Super satisfying! 🍵 Great drinks – Their matcha tea was a win, and they have dairy-free options, which is a big plus. ☀️ Charming back terrace – a lovely space to enjoy your meal, though it could use a touch of extra care. ✅ Highly recommended – tasty, balanced, and thoughtful menu. A place worth coming back to!

we had carrot cake and pomme canelle accompanied by tea and coffee. if you are looking for something more natural and not super sweet I’d say this is a great spot. the atmosphere was very cozy and our orders were satisfactory. one comment would just be that the pieces of cake could be a bit bigger to match the price (this is me comparing to similar shops & prices in other places I’ve been to in France and elsewhere)

An excellent brunch here. The staff was super friendly and efficient. The menu is quite simple but super good and you’ll have a lot of food for the price you pay. Highly recommended.

The location is quite cozy, but it’s not really anything special. I had the sandwich with salad. The salad consisted of just lettuce leaves and carrots - very unremarkable. The sandwich wasn’t to my taste. It didn’t complement well. Unfortunately, the cappuccino was as small as an espresso.

Very nice experience at this bar by the river. The cocktails were great, the food was good and the weather really helped. The charcuterie board was not amazing but good enough. Would definitely come back!

From which century is this bar? They didn't permit us to entry to the bar because we wore sneakers. Warning: ultra stereotype dress for women and men, solid binary and formal costume to enter.

It's really my fault for ordering a Caipirinha in France. LOL not that much like the Brazilian version. I enjoyed the atmosphere and quick friendly service.

The ambience is the worst of all the other boats, also overpriced they tried to charge me more. All the staff just wants to take your money. But the worst part is one night they let you in and other night they won’t let you without any explanation. Never going back there.

By far the best vegan cafe in Lyon. I have come here every day they’ve been open since arriving here(over a week now). Every time I’ve come in, mon français is a little better and I can have a little bit longer of conversations. Super welcoming and warm environment. The matcha cookie is my favorite pastry but I loved all of the ones I tried. I always get un latte glacé au lait de coco et au sirop de vanille and it never disappoints. It’s definitely been a comfort place for me, I can’t recommend it enough.

This little cafe has only 2 dishes for lunch and several desserts, all plant-based. Dishes are inspired by Japan, and desserts are mostly French. And everything I tasted was very very delicious. 😋 Hope to visit them again in the future! 🌱

AME is my favorite vegan cafe in Lyon. But more seriously, AME is one of my favorite coffee shops for pourovers in Lyon. They serve up Juicy - literally - Coffee Roasters, and have food and pastries to keep your coffee company. (Fun fact: I've been coming here since September 2024 and have only had coffee here. One day I'll indulge in edibles.) Chic, interior. Good for a date, friend catchup, or banging out a few emails - there's always at least one person on their laptop. Welcoming, knowledgable service. Credit cards accepted. Grab their loyalty card, as you'll be back. Find AME a short walk from the Guillotiere Gabriel Péri Metro station, and just a half block from a tram (T1) stop.

Coming here with my family with young kids. There are options for everyone. Great taste and very good price for this high quality. We took Matcha latte, sparkling apple juice, vegan granola bowl and they are all delicious. 🍵 The chocolate cake with sichuan pepper is a must-try! 🍫🌶️

Didn’t expect much since it is located in a shopping mall. It was a pleasant surprise that the staff was super friendly and helpful since we don’t speak French. The food came quickly and was good. Water got refilled quickly and you can pay with a QR code.

Health food and drinks, excellent choices. Mosim was great, friendly and intuitive. Easy to order and pay.

The brunch set, with its avocado toast, offers good value, but the taste is quite disappointing. The toast is undercooked, and the avocado lacks any dressing, resulting in a rather plain dish.

A very disappointing experience. The coffee was sour and under-extracted, and the milk was just a bubbly, over-aerated foam that had been overheated far beyond the necessary temperature. Even though the shop was completely empty and there was no rush, the lack of attention to quality was obvious. I do not recommend.

The espresso we had was TOP!🎩 Reminded me all the coffee tastes of finest quality we had recently in Colombia. The owner is great. Big smile. Big warmth. It's a combo rarity in Europe 🌍!

One of our highlights of our trip in Lyon. Haider was super friendly and we had a lovely chat with him despite the coffee shop closing whilst we were there. Excellent coffee and decorated very nicely. He even gave us a gift. We’ll be back!

Tips for Enjoying the Cafe Culture in Lyon

While Lyon’s coffee scene is welcoming, understanding the local rhythms and etiquette will significantly enhance your experience. The city operates on a distinct schedule, and knowing when to go, what to order, and how to behave will help you blend in seamlessly with the locals. Here are some essential tips to make the most of your cafe hopping.

1. Respect the Meal Hours

Many specialty cafes in Lyon pivot to a lunch service between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. If you are looking to sit with a laptop during this window, you may be asked to move or order food. Plan your work sessions for mid-morning or after 3:00 PM to secure a table without pressure.

2. Ask for the “Café de Spécialité”

If you wander into a traditional bouchon or brasserie asking for a latte, you might be disappointed by a dark, bitter shot pulled from an automatic machine. To find the good stuff, search for “café de spécialité” on your map. This term indicates a venue dedicated to artisan methods and high-quality beans.

3. Embrace the “Noisette”

If you want a middle ground between an espresso and a milky latte, order a “noisette.” This is the French equivalent of a macchiato—a shot of espresso “stained” with a dash of hot milk. It is the standard order for locals who want to enjoy the flavor of the bean without the intensity of a straight shot.

4. Tap Water is Standard

In France, it is perfectly acceptable and common to ask for a glass of tap water with your coffee. Simply ask for “une carafe d’eau.” Cafes are legally required to provide it for free if you are a paying customer, and it helps cleanse your palate between different brews.

5. Look for the Local Roasters

Lyon is home to several excellent local roasters who supply many of the best cafes. If you see beans from local operations like Loutsa, Mokxa, or La Boîte à Café on the shelf, you are likely in a place that cares about freshness. Buying a bag of these beans makes for a far better souvenir than a generic mug.

The cafe scene in Lyon is a testament to the city’s ability to evolve while maintaining its soul. It is a place where tradition meets innovation, where you can sip a world-class pour-over in the morning and enjoy a rustic meal in the afternoon. Taking the time to explore these independent businesses supports a community of passionate artisans who have transformed the way the French drink coffee.

Whether you choose a sunlit corner in Croix-Rousse or a sleek counter in the 7th, the perfect cup is waiting for you. So grab a book, charge your phone, and settle in—the best cafes in Lyon are ready to welcome you like a local.
