Wandering through the narrow, sun-drenched streets of Valencia’s old town, the scent of fresh orange blossoms often mingles with something far more tempting—the unmistakable aroma of freshly baked bread and sugar. Just steps away from the imposing Valencia Cathedral, a world of culinary tradition awaits those willing to follow their noses.
While the Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the surrounding plazas and alleyways are home to some of the city’s most cherished artisanal bakeries. For locals, these establishments are not just shops; they are vital social hubs where daily life revolves around the morning tostada or the afternoon sweet.
Finding an authentic pastry shop in a heavily touristic area can be tricky, as not all gold glitters. You want to avoid mass-produced tourist traps and find the places where locals actually queue for their daily bread.
To help you navigate this gastronomic landscape, we have curated a list of the finest spots to satisfy your carb cravings. These are venues known for their quality ingredients, traditional techniques, and proximity to the Plaza de la Reina.
Whether you are craving a flaky croissant, a traditional Valencian fartón, or a crusty baguette for a picnic in the Turia Gardens, there is a perfect spot nearby. Here are the 12 best bakeries near Valencia Cathedral.

The pistachio cheesecake is absolute perfection! I fear I will never enjoy cheesecake in the US again! The chocolate chip sea salt cookie was so delicious! Beautiful bakery and the owner is so kind. A must visit!

The owner was very nice. We came on my first day in Valencia, tried different pastries and some dates stuffed with peanut butter and chocolate. The next day, we came back to have the dates again. Everything was amazing, we will definitely come again.
Ganna P.★★★★★
Very warm and friendly owner of this small pâtisserie. We tried several cheesecake flavors and a banana brownie — everything was delicious. Our favorite was the Kinder Bueno cheesecake, and the coffee was absolutely amazing. Definitely a place worth stopping by to try all the sweet treats.

Everything looks so amazing that it's hard to make up my mind. Cheesecake is my favourite, so I went for the one with caramel and popcorn topping. It was definitely worth trying! Plus, the staff is super friendly.

The best crookie I’ve ever had by far (and I’ve tried many all over the world). The rest of the pastries are just as perfectly delicious, and the staff are truly kind and welcoming. I 100% recommend this place.

I highly recommend this cafe for its amazing coffee, fresh pastries, and cozy atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxed breakfast or a sweet treat. Don’t miss the desserts! I can’t wait to come back to Valencia and try more of them!

I visited Dulce de Leche Café and honestly, it was a disappointment. The place is beautiful and very Instagrammable, and the service was impeccable, but I genuinely don’t understand the hype.
We ordered eggs with avocado on toast, and the eggs arrived cold. The presentation looked perfect, but the dish itself lacked warmth, which made it quite underwhelming. The pastries were also nothing special — they didn’t look or taste fresh, which was surprising given the reputation of the place.
The coffee was another letdown. It didn’t stand out in any way and definitely didn’t meet expectations for a café that seems so popular.
Overall, while the aesthetics and service are great, the food and coffee did not deliver. I wouldn’t recommend it, and I wouldn’t go back. Overrated for sure 😞

We loved it here. We went there 2 times and I think we will go at least once more. Good coffee, a lot of breakfast choices and the staff is very nice.
Laurel Ellis★★★★★
Polite and friendly staff, excellent selection of pastries. A very convenient breakfast location to our hotel. This croissant was custard and jam, which wasn’t the cheese and bacon I was expecting down to my poor Spanish. I hit my head on bathroom light which is very low hanging.

Place for sugar lovers 😀
Many different sweets and coffee.
Ordering felt a little bit difficult- no serving at tables, so you have to order at one place, take your order from another 😅
But staff was nice, cake fresh and delicious, coffee good and prices friendly, so if you like desserts- worth to visit.

Absolutely delicious croissants 😋. We took 3 different kind and they all were super tasty. I gave 4 stars because we could not sit there and enjoy them inside with coffee. They only do "take away". It would be wonderful to enjoy the place because it's beautiful inside with those delicious desserts around you. Hopefully next time we are in Valencia ❤️ they will have a spot with sitting.

If you're in Valencia, Sukar pastry shop is an absolute must-visit! Their desserts are not only delicious but also incredibly creative, featuring stunning presentations that elevate each treat into a work of art.
Each bite feels like opening Pandora’s box, revealing a delightful blend of unique ingredients and flavors. Remarkably, they manage to strike the perfect balance by keeping the sweetness in check, making these desserts indulgent yet enjoyable without being overwhelming.
During my six-day stay in Valencia, I couldn’t resist making a daily pilgrimage to Sukar. I often found myself trying two desserts at a time because they were simply that good. Every visit was a highlight of my day, and I genuinely looked forward to experiencing their latest creations.
I highly recommend Sukar to anyone with a sweet tooth—it's worth savoring every calorie! You won’t be disappointed.

Incredible aroma when you walk through, pastries are a little higher in price than other places within Valencia - however, you pay for what you get which was the freshest and most delightful cakes and pastries.
Andzej★★★★☆
We tried three pastries: a pistachio bun, a brownie bun, and a tiramisu bun.
The pistachio bun was the best — very tasty with a strong pistachio flavor, but not overly sweet.
The brownie bun was a bit strange. There was an actual piece of brownie inside, which made the texture heavy and dense. It felt like having a dessert inside another dessert. A brownie-flavored filling would probably work better than putting a full brownie inside the bun.
The tiramisu bun was good, but nothing special — I wouldn’t order it again.
Overall, the bakery was a bit disappointing. I expected something more refined and balanced. The pastries feel designed more for social media — lots of fillings and dramatic visuals — rather than elegance and flavor.
Another surprising thing is that, despite the premium prices (€5–€7 per pastry), there’s no place to sit and enjoy them with a coffee — both locations are basically takeaway only, which feels a bit odd for a bakery at this price level.
For comparison, if Hoffmann in Barcelona is a 10, this place would be around a 6 for me.
Danko Loncar★★★★★
This pastry shop is seriously amazing!
They have such a great variety of beautifully crafted pastries.
Sukar is all about these huge filled croissants that are to die for.
It's in the Old Town and they have some seriously delicious treats like tiramisu croissants, pistachio-covered doughnuts, and even peanut and salted caramel cruffins.
If you don't want to wait forever, make sure to get there early.
And let me tell you, the almond croissant will blow your mind! 😋

We stopped in to grab an empanada or two for lunch and I didn't leave without choosing which empanadas I would eat tomorrow when I returned! We had the chicken and mushroom, mushroom and cheese and onion and cheese and every bite was incredible. Its a small shop with a few bar stools at the back where a few locals were eating when we got there. As were choosing what we would come back for, the kind woman helping us gave us recommendations we couldn't refuse. The almond cookies were really moist in the middle and the sweet potato and pumpkin filled cookies were amazing. We also got a pistachio croissant. We recommend them all!

A. K.★★★☆☆
I’m giving this place 3 stars because, while the quality of the food is undeniably good, the overall experience left me with mixed feelings.
The products we tried were genuinely tasty and fresh – I can see why many people praise the bakery for its quality. The atmosphere inside the market is vibrant and charming, and the stall itself has a cozy feel. It’s clearly a popular spot, and with a solid reputation and an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 based on hundreds of reviews, it's obviously doing something right.
However, there are two major issues that really bothered me. First, the prices are genuinely too high for what you get. I understand that you're paying for quality and the central location, but it still felt overpriced.
Second – and this was the biggest disappointment – we were charged €0.75 for plastic forks and knives. Charging extra for basic disposable cutlery felt completely unnecessary and left a bad taste in our mouths. If you're going to charge for plastic cutlery, you might as well charge for the plate too! It's such a petty extra that it ruins the experience, especially when you're already paying premium prices.
Overall, the food itself is tasty and the stall is charming, but the pricing policy and the ridiculous cutlery charge are hard to ignore. Would I come back? Probably not – there are other great options in Mercat Central that offer better value for money.

Very good and fresh bakery. Everyday you can find something sweet or salty to take to go. Everything is high quality. We came back a few times a it was top of the top. This place is incredible! Stumbled across it on the way to another breakfast place and decided to go back here. So happy I did. The pastries are delicately made and they have interesting offerings that I haven’t seen in other bakeries. They even accommodated my extremely pathetic attempt to speak Spanish when ordering and (PSA to those for whom it really matters) they can speak a little English when needed. Probably gonna go back multiple times.

15 years ago there were countless small bakeries producing excellent bread. I used to go out at 7am to get a fresh loaf. Then things started to change. Petrol stations would have an oven to finish off factory made dough. On this trip to Valencia I have found a few good old school bread makers and none better than Alfonso Martinez. They are opposite the central market so easy enough to find. The bread was just as I remember it: light, crispy, delicious. A baguette here cost €1 and you can get one from carrefour for 45c. But I promise Alfonso’s bread is worth the extra.

Stumbled across this place on the hunt for dessert…. It just soo happened to be the donut day! (Día de la berlina) apparently the only do this twice a year, one day in June and the 18th of December!
I can only talk about the donuts they served, they were all delicious. We’re had Lotus Biscoff, Ferrero Rocher and Oreo!
They had so many different flavours, I wish I could have tried more.
In terms of the staff, they were a bit chaotic, it was very busy though - however they still had a chat with us as we were paying our bill.

Sweet tooth officially satisfied. Chök had some of the most amazing desserts and a sleek modern atmosphere that made the whole experience even better. Every bite was beautifully made, rich in flavor and almost too pretty to eat. This place is awesome! Finding gluten free food is difficult, especially when you're looking for gluten free food thats actually tasty. Here at chök they actually managed to do that! Nice place with huge variety of cakes and desserts. I love the smell in this place — they cook stuff there and the smell is so creamy and milk — I dunno just liked so much 🤤

That’s why 4/5 stars

There are some vegan/dairy free options too, so just ask. We heated up our cookies at home last night and they were incredible.

THE OG SPOT FOR VALENCIAN HORCHATA! Cool spot to have an horchata and farton (slightly sweet , doughnut like , bread stick). The horchata was just a little too sweet for my liking . But very nice spot and quick service. Their fartons were some of the better ones we had in all of Valencia .
Melissa & Jamie★★★★★
Came to Horchatería de Santa Catalina for churros and they were some of the best we had in Valencia. They were served fresh with a crisp outside and soft centre. The hot chocolate was just right too. It was rich enough to enjoy with the churros without being overly heavy. A big thank you to Naomi who looked after us. She was friendly and made us feel really welcome.

Came here as recommended by my tour guide that this place is one of the original horchata places - I personally enjoyed the horchata with the farton and dipping that into the horchata. It wasn’t too sweet which is what I prefer, I even ended up ordering two portions. Service was really quick and you pay as soon as you get your order.
Dario Fiorucci★★★★★
A historic institution in Valencia that is an absolute must-visit. The interior is charming, decorated with traditional ceramics that create a wonderful old-world atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to try authentic, chilled horchata, paired with traditional fartons for dipping. A delightful, classic stop right in the heart of the city.
Hande Demirci★★★☆☆
Honestly, I found it quite overrated. The dough was okay, but the chocolate didn’t have a rich or deep taste and was below average for me. We went because of the hype, but I wouldn’t personally recommend it.
The horchata was also not really for me. I understand it’s a unique and traditional taste, so I don’t think it’s necessarily the place’s fault - I just didn’t enjoy it.

Tips for Choosing the Right Bakery in Valencia
Navigating the bakery scene in Valencia requires a bit of local knowledge. While almost every corner offers something edible, distinguishing between a genuine artisanal oven and a reheated frozen product will define your experience. Here are a few practical tips to ensure you taste the best the city has to offer.
1. Look for the Wood-Fired Oven
The heart of any traditional Valencian bakery is its oven. If you can see a large, stone or brick oven—often wood-fired—you are in the right place. These ovens produce bread with a thick, crispy crust and a soft, airy interior that is impossible to replicate with industrial electric ovens. The slight char on the bottom of a loaf is a badge of honor here.
2. Follow the "Hora del Almuerzo" Crowd
Valencians take their late-morning snack, the almuerzo, very seriously. Between 10:30 AM and 12:00 PM, watch for the rush of locals ordering sandwiches. If a bakery has a steady stream of workers and residents buying bocadillos stuffed with tortilla or jamón, you have found a spot with fresh, high-quality bread.
3. Prioritize Seasonal Specialties
The best bakeries rotate their menus based on the calendar. Depending on the time of year, you should look for specific items. During Fallas (March), look for buñuelos de calabaza (pumpkin fritters). During Easter, seek out mona de pascua. If a shop sells the same identical pastries year-round without variation, it is likely catering to tourists rather than locals.
4. Ask for the "Pan del Día"
If you are buying a loaf of bread, always specify that you want pan del día (bread of the day). While it might seem obvious, some bakeries also sell "rustic" breads intended to last for days. Asking for the daily bake ensures you get the freshest product with the best texture, ideal for dipping in olive oil or making a sandwich.
5. Observe the Coffee Pairing
A true Valencian bakery understands the relationship between pastry and coffee. Look for places that offer a proper café con leche or cremaet (flamed rum coffee) to accompany your sweet. If the establishment takes pride in its coffee bean selection and preparation, it is almost certain they apply the same care to their dough.
6. Go Early, Go Often
The early bird catches the warm bread. Bakeries in the old town typically bake in the early hours of the morning. By 1:00 PM, the best items are often sold out. For the widest selection and the chance to eat something still warm from the oven, aim to visit between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.
