While Marseille is globally celebrated for its sun-drenched Mediterranean coastline and the fragrant, saffron-rich allure of bouillabaisse, the city’s culinary identity runs much deeper than seafood stew. Tucked away in the bustling Vieux-Port and the vibrant, multicultural districts that spiral outward from the center lies a profound appreciation for high-quality meat.
The Provençal capital has quietly cultivated a robust steakhouse culture that rivals the traditional brasseries and fish markets that dominate the tourist trail. For the discerning diner, Marseille offers an intriguing paradox: a port city where the catch of the day is always tempting, yet the sizzle of a perfectly seared cut of beef is just as integral to the local dining scene.
The influx of international influences, combined with France’s historic reverence for bovine breeds like Charolais, Limousine, and Aubrac, has created a dynamic market for meat lovers. Whether you are seeking a refined French dining experience or a rustic, wood-fired grill, the city delivers.
Navigating the culinary landscape of France’s oldest city can be overwhelming, especially when your palate is set on a specific craving. You might be looking for a power lunch in the business district, a romantic dinner overlooking the water, or a casual spot to enjoy a hearty entrecôte with friends.
The diversity of venues means that the quality of beef, the expertise of the grill master, and the ambiance can vary dramatically from one arrondissement to the next. A great steakhouse is defined not just by the provenance of its beef but by the precision of its cooking and the quality of its accompanying sauces.
In Marseille, you will find chefs who treat a cut of Simmental or Galician blonde beef with the same respect a sushi master gives to tuna. They understand the Maillard reaction, the importance of resting the meat, and the magic of a sauce au poivre or a simple, high-quality fleur de sel.
This guide has been curated to cut through the noise and lead you directly to the best tables in town. We have evaluated these establishments based on the quality and sourcing of their meat, the skill of their kitchen, the depth of their wine lists, and the overall atmosphere that makes dining in Marseille so unique.
From dry-aged masterpieces to classic bistro fare, there is a perfect steak waiting for you. Below is our definitive selection of the top venues where the grill is king and the beef is always the star of the show.

This isn't a steakhouse; it's just an ordinary restaurant. A quintessential tourist restaurant. completely unnecessary It was the worst meat I've ever eaten.

We came to the restaurant in the middle of a flash flood and the staff were absolutely incredible - the road flooded and all the waiters build a bridge of chairs to help people leave. The food was great and the staff have a lovely family feel - they made an extra effort with us to speak some English and help us with some French! Definitely recommend, thank you again!

Marseille has been the friendliest place i have visited. This was our last meal before leaving for Nice, and again, the friendliest service. The food is what I expected, no nonsense, steak fries and salad. The only difficulty, to have a steak each, or to share, the gluttony took over and opted for one each. No regrets, I finished my steak, my partner, left only a small amount of steak. If you love your steak, come to Maison Carne, treat yourself.

Great experience at Maison Carne in Marseille. We mixed up our reservation and showed up a day early, but the waiter was super accommodating and got us seated without any issue. From start to finish, the service was friendly, relaxed, and attentive.
There’s no menu here, the waiter just asked how we like our steak, and that was it. He kicked things off with foie gras and bread, which was a great surprise.
We ordered our steaks medium rare, and they came out perfectly cooked. Great crust on the outside, juicy and tender inside, and full of flavor. The kind of steak that doesn’t need anything extra. It comes with crispy, well-seasoned fries and a simple salad that pairs really well with the meat.
They also have a really cool wine concept, you pay €1 per centimeter in the glass, so you choose exactly how much wine you want. Fun, different, and perfect if you don’t want a full glass.
We loved it so much we’re already planning to come back later this month with our kids. Can’t wait to return. Highly recommend if you’re in Marseille and want a great steak without the fuss.

The steak was cooked exactly right - tender, juicy and full of flavors! Loved their service, very friendly and welcoming! Will definitely come back:)

Staff were immediately super friendly and seated us without a reservation. They spoke good English and were happy to explain everything. It is a set menu with a starter of terrine and bread, which we really enjoyed. Then comes the star of the show, the steak, and it was divine. As it was lunchtime we shared this and it was more than enough for 2 people. It was well charred but still medium as requested, accompaniments of French fries and salad were good and we had ordered bernaise sauce which was delicious. We rounded off the meal with a creme brulee to share and a coffee and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

I really love the wooden interior design, it makes everything look so much fancier and cleaner in my opinion. The service at this restaurant was welcoming and polite. The chef was a bit more stone faced but he was really professional. The food itself was lovely. The meats were all really tender and juicy which was amazing. I do feel like the prices are a bit expensive though. Their staple Gold Beef veal steak was 99 euro for two people and even though it was quite delicious, I just feel like the meat was a bit overcooked which made it less good. It also didn't have a strong smokey flavour like the normal rib steak and it didn't have the tenderness and the intense flavours like the slow cooked meat. So even though their Gold Beef steak was delicious, I feel like the other options were more worth it for me. The side dishes were really good. I really like how they give smaller portions but more options to pick from. It really allows me to try more dishes and that's always a plus for me. I want to say the same for the sauces but I feel like their sauces were not good at all. Their flavours were so overwhelming and in my opinion, the sauce did not complement the food really well beside the black pepper sauce and the barbecue sauce. I however don't know if it's simply because I am not used to their flavour profiles though. All in all, the food was fantastic but the prices are leaning a bit more on the expensive side.

The rice was cold. It was nice but it was cold. The steak was also undercooked and bloody which I didn’t ask for. The staff were very nice and the atmosphere was chilled out.

The food was absolutely phenomenal. The meat came as everyone demanded, the sides wdre full of flavor and the recommended sauce was good. The baklava dessert is the best dessert I've ever had in my life. The crispiness, combined with the classic baklava taste and creamy-/sweetness of the ice cream is just unbeatable. The price is extremely rsasonalbe and the service was on point.

Best service I've received yet in a town of incredibly hospitable people. Kababs were well cooked, but it was the cheese pastry that stole the show as it reminded me of something my mom cooks. The music was on point, our glasses were always full of water, and food arrived fast even though they were busy with take out and dine in. It did seem a bit on the pricy side initially, but the portions were quite large.

I had a late night dinner. From the name, I did not realize it was a Lebanese inspired restaurant. What a pleasant surprise. Food was outstanding, tasty and authentic. Service was fabulous. Super highly recommended. Will visit again. I had the Lamb and the Lebanese Sampler.

This restaurant is absolutely amazing. The food is soooo good. My family of 4 ate so well. Wife had Duck Pasta, delicious is an understatement. My son the Lamb Skewers, tender and grilled to perfection. The au gratin potatoes were so good. My daughter had the burger and it was so big she only ate half and she loved it. I had the Grilled Beef Filet and it was amazing. Best steak I've had in France. The sauces are very good, I had the mushroom sauce. Cocktails were very good as well. Prices were excellent. 5 stars!!
NJ★★★☆☆
The lamb skewers were a bit chewy but the chicken skewers and thigh were nice. So was the beef carpaccio.
Sadly they don’t have beer or wine, only cocktails. 😢👎🏼
Service was a bit distant but could be due to the language barrier.

Worst restaurant experience ever!!
Very unsatisfied and slow service. Mixed up the dishes with every table, sides where horrible prepared, look the pic of salad and mac&cheese😂🫣🙉
Meat portion were completly different size and quality on every plates...
And to add something more we waited for more than an hour for already prepared smoked meat!!
Just very disappointing and absolutely not what we expected by reading the reviews!!
Joe Mama★★★★☆
We came in as a group of 3. We ordered our food and in came in ~5 minutes we ordered brisket and the rib.
When we finished the mac and cheese the waiters came to us and asked us if we wanted more(we ate 3 Mac and cheese plates) the cheese was strong for me but still the taste was worth it.
I wouldn't say this is the BEST meat restaurant but still an extremely good one.

Beautiful restaurant !!! What a find, we had struggled to find a restaurant to cater well for English people in Marseille and this hit the spot in every way. The food was gorgeous, steak cooked to perfection and a good choice of starters and desserts, decor lovely, service impeccable. The waiter gave us a barcode to convert the menu to English and was very helpful about recommendations for the area whilst we are staying. Will definitely be returning.

A very nice place with a wonderful atmosphere. We started with the prosciutto and melon, burrata, and artichoke appetizers, all of which were delicious. For the main course, we had the grilled octopus, cooked to perfection.
The vanilla and Tonka crème brûlée was an absolute masterpiece and the perfect way to end the meal.
We also highly recommend the Auxey-Duresses white wine—it paired beautifully with the food and was absolutely delicious.
The atmosphere was simply perfect. 👌🏻

La Côte de Bœuf. Incredible steakhouse near the Vieux-Port! We had perfectly cooked beef, crispy calamari, and a quality charcuterie board. The truffle potatoes were a highlight, and the dessert ended the night on a high note. Great service and cozy terrace vibes.
5/5 A must for meat lovers in Marseille!

Such a darling outdoor restaurant! We had such a lovely dinner here. A few gluten and dairy-free options. I got the seasonal veggies as side (ratatouille). The steak was delicious and definitely worth the price. The staff and sommelier were all very attentive and kind! We got a tour of the wine cellar. Definitely worth paying for! I’d definitely go back here!

On the first day in Marseille we enjoyed a wonderful dinner. Sommelier competently recommended amazing bio-dynamic wines. We had a filet of beef served with truffle/ cognac sauce. As a side vegetable dish - green beans and salad available as a pommes frittes option. Beef is being grilled on open fire in a open fire pit in the dining hall. We requested our steak medium rare and it was grilled and served to perfection as to temperature, texture, presentation and taste. We especially enjoyed the taste of grated tonka in creme brullle, grilled pineapple served with handmade ice cream and delicious coffee. We extra prolonged our stay in Marseille to have lunch here gain. Again-every dish is made to perfection. A true reason to come to Marseille again

L’Entrecôte du Quai is a good choice especially if you’re after a straightforward, classic French steak-frites meal with the added perk of a harbour view in central Marseille. It hits strong for location, the concept of the dish, and the convenience of the old port setting.
However: if your priority is exceptional fine dining, extremely high service polish, or a wide variety of menu options, you might treat this as “solid, reliable” rather than “top-tier.”
“For a hearty meat-and-chips meal in Marseille’s heart with a view—yes. For a luxury experience—maybe temper expectations.”
💡 Practical tips
• Book or arrive early: The prime location means it can fill; best to reserve or show up around opening.
• Go for the formula: Many reviews mention a fixed “entrecôte + fries + sauce” menu. That gives good value.
• Request a table facing the port: The view makes a difference. When you book or arrive ask for a terrace or view table.
• Ask about the sauce and doneness: Since the signature is the sauce and the steak, if you prefer a particular doneness request it (e.g., “saignant”).
• Check service & facilities: In one review the toilets were cited as needing improvement. If this matters to you, you may want to inspect briefly.
• Budget estimate: Depending on menu and drinks, expect a mid-range price (Steak + sides + drink) consistent with central harbour dining and location premium.
• Combine with a harbour stroll: After your meal, you can take a walk along the Vieux-Port, visit nearby landmarks or relax on a quay terrace.

You know what it was actually pretty good.
Its not the real entrecote but its pretty much the same. The thing that I don't like is that the fries are not unlimited... Bummer.
The salad was good.
My drink tho ... I ordered the bloody Mary and it was missing a little bit of flavor.
Other than that it was nice.

Lovely little spot quite close to the train station with plenty of seating and good menu options. The service staff had minimal English but the menu was online and there was no fuss. The meals were decently priced, a good size and came with either a drink or dessert included in the price. The interior is pleasant and we had little issue. We came at a quiet time while we were waiting for hire car pick up and were grateful for the air conditioning.

Disappointed by the quality of the beef sold for the pierrade. I'll go to Bec or Monoprix butchers instead, even if they're more expensive. The duck slices were also cut hastily and were thick, whereas I had asked for thin to medium. In short, we didn't get the enjoyment we were hoping for from our first pierrade of the season.

We had a great time here! Everything was excellent, and the £35 all-you-can-eat meat selection was great. My personal favorite was the barbecue chicken wings, but I also loved the beef with melted cheese, the sausages, and the turkey. Honestly, everything we tried was delicious.
I’m not usually a big salad bar person, but I really enjoyed the French fries, the roasted potatoes, and even the butter chicken with rice. We also ended the meal with the chocolate fondue, which was a great treat.
A special shout out to our waiter, Aissatou. She was incredibly kind, attentive, and took such great care of us throughout our meal. She really made the experience even better.
The only downside was that the restaurant felt extremely warm, almost like a sauna. A little more air conditioning or better ventilation would have made the experience much more comfortable.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I’d definitely recommend it.

This Brazilian restaurant is amazing! 🤤 Everything was absolutely delicious!
They have an unlimited buffet with fresh salads and appetisers, and I honestly loved everything I tried.
Don’t miss the salad with watermelon-feta-cucumber-mint!!
Then they come to your table with skewers straight from the grill, and you simply choose the meats you want.
I had the smoked turkey with honey and cheese, spicy chicken, picanha, and the beef of the day with cheese. Every single one was juicy, perfectly cooked, and full of flavour!
The staff is incredibly friendly, and Aissatou took the time to explain everything with a huge smile, making the whole experience even better.
If you love meat, this place is a must-visit. Great food, great service, and a really fun dining experience.
I can’t wait to come back!

I’m so happy I stopped by! I got the picanha, frango tropical, and abacaxi. Everything was so well seasoned and tasty. Aissatou and Sayidina took excellent care of me and answered all my questions. ❤️

We ordered the 4-skewer deal today and had a great experience, thanks in large part to our server, Aissatou. She took the time to walk us through the different skewer options and made some helpful suggestions, which made choosing much easier. Throughout the meal she was attentive, friendly, and very helpful.
The food was excellent and the service really made the visit stand out. Overall, a 10/10 experience. I’d definitely recommend stopping by if you’re in Marseille.

I honestly don't know how this place has so many good reviews. Our experience was awful. To start, they brought us less food than what was stated on the menu. When I pointed out that we didn't receive everything we paid for, the waiters were incredibly sarcastic, and one of them actually argued with us with a terrible attitude for five minutes straight.
Aside from the picanha, the food was completely mediocre. To make matters worse, we saw a cockroach crawling inside the restaurant. They literally ruined our night—save your money and your time.

Food was okay although the portion was not enough.
Service is too long to arrive with regards to our order. The waiters also forgot some of the orders.
The place was okay although the seats aren't comfortable

This is my favourite steakhouse in France and the Hippopotamus Marseille La Valentine proved no exception. The poached egg in chorizo sauce was divine and our steaks zmwere heavenly. Our maître d Clarice was so welcoming and professional. The highlight of our holiday

An absolute hidden gem in Marseille! Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you—the food here is truly superb. I had the lamb followed by the crème brûlée, and the rest of my family thoroughly enjoyed their dishes as well. Everything was top-notch. What really stood out, though, was the service: warm, attentive, and exceptionally professional in a way that is rare to find nowadays. Highly recommended!

Delicious food, especially the bone marrow. Great mains, fantastic service. This place deserves to be the busiest spot on the block.

Last meal in Marseille, and the best one. We both had the lamb shoulder special which was amazing. Lovely relaxed atmosphere and the hostess (dark haired, english speaking) was great - friendly and welcoming to tourists

Essential Tips for Choosing the Perfect Steakhouse in Marseille
Before you make a reservation, it is worth understanding a few nuances about ordering beef in France to ensure your dining experience meets your expectations. Unlike the American or British steakhouse traditions, French service often involves specific sauces and particular doneness levels that can catch first-time visitors off guard. Keeping a few local customs in mind will help you order with confidence and enjoy the meal exactly as the chef intended.
1). Understand French Doneness Levels
French cooking temperatures differ slightly from international standards. If you usually order “medium rare,” you should ask for à point, which translates to perfectly cooked but is often closer to a medium. If you want a true medium-rare with a warm red center, request saignant. Ordering bleu will get you a steak that is essentially seared on the outside and nearly raw inside.
2). Look for the Breed and Origin
The best steakhouses in Marseille proudly display the origin of their beef. Look for menu items specifying French breeds like Bœuf de Charolles, Limousine, or Aubrac. If a restaurant simply lists “steak” without a provenance, it is often a sign of lower quality. Premium venues will also mention maturation periods, such as dry-aged for 30 or 45 days.
3). Embrace the Sauces
While a great cut of beef needs little more than salt, French steak culture is deeply intertwined with sauces. Don’t shy away from the classics. A sauce au poivre (black pepper cream), sauce béarnaise, or a sauce roquefort can elevate the dish and provides a distinctly French dining experience that differs from a simple butter baste.
4). Don’t Skip the Entrée
In many traditional French steakhouses, the meal is a marathon, not a sprint. While you might be focused on the main event, taking the time to order a starter—perhaps a charcuterie board or a bone marrow dish—allows the kitchen to pace the meal properly. It also gives you a better sense of the chef’s overall skill before the beef arrives.
5). Pair with Regional Wines
While Bordeaux is the classic pairing for red meat, you are in Provence. Do not overlook the robust reds from nearby appellations like Bandol, which is just a short drive from Marseille. A Bandol made primarily from Mourvèdre offers the tannic structure and dark fruit notes necessary to stand up to a rich, fatty cut of beef.
Marseille’s dining scene is a vibrant tapestry woven from its maritime roots and its deep connection to the terroir of Southern France. While the harbor may lure you toward the day’s fresh catch, the city’s steakhouses offer a hearty, indulgent alternative that showcases the best of French livestock farming and culinary technique.
Whether you find yourself in a chic dining room near the Opéra or a cozy bistro in the Cours Julien, the respect for the product remains the common thread. Ultimately, the best steakhouse is the one that matches your desired atmosphere, whether that is a lively, family-run institution or a sleek, modern grill room.
By following this curated list and remembering the local dining customs, you are well-equipped to enjoy one of the most satisfying meals Marseille has to offer. Bon appétit.
