Walking through the streets surrounding Plaza Mayor, the scent of sizzling garlic and cured jamón drifts from crowded doorways, pulling you toward some of the most authentic dining experiences in Madrid. While the main square is a spectacle of history and architecture, the real soul of the city often lives in the narrow cobblestone lanes just beyond its arches.
Finding a genuine tapas bar in such a tourist-heavy district can be a challenge, as flashy menus and pushy waiters often overshadow quality. However, if you know where to look, you can still find family-run establishments that have been serving traditional recipes for generations.
The key to eating well near Plaza Mayor is to step slightly off the beaten path and look for places filled with local Madrileños rather than just visitors. A good tapas bar is identified by the noise level, the presence of cured ham legs hanging from the ceiling, and the speed at which the bartenders pour the vermouth.
Whether you are looking for a quick standing bite at the bar or a leisurely evening of sharing plates, this area offers a diverse range of atmospheres. From historic taverns with tiled walls to modern gastro-bars reinventing Spanish classics, the surrounding streets cater to every type of food lover.
In this guide, we have curated a list of the best options to help you navigate the culinary landscape surrounding the capital’s most famous square. Each recommendation balances quality, atmosphere, and value to ensure you experience the true essence of Spanish gastronomy.
By the end of this article, you will know exactly where to go to avoid tourist traps and eat like a local. Prepare your appetite for crispy croquetas, spicy patatas bravas, and perfectly chilled cañas.
Below is our curated selection of the top establishments in the vicinity, chosen for their consistency and commitment to traditional flavors.

Great atmosphere, but the service was terrible, we had two servers come up to us that were so rude for no reason. Rushed us to order and was rude about it, didn’t go over the menu or say anything after forcing us to order. Andres was amazing!! He was so kind and wonderful and made our experience!

Great view right on plaza mayor! Food was good and decently priced!

Amazing place to sit and have a few drinks. The food was okay and the drinks were great. The best part was sitting and watching the people and the view. The service was great and servers were attentive.

After our lunch at San Miguel Market, we strolled for just 5 minutes to reach Cafe Bar Zarra located inside Plaza Mayor. It was a perfect spot for people watching while enjoying a relaxing afternoon sangria. We opted for some small dishes to accompany our drinks. It was decent, not too pricey and had a pleasant atmosphere. Overall, it was a nice stop for a casual drink and snack.

You’re paying for the view. Don’t expect hot food, good drinks or good service. It’s fine if you know what this place is. This afternoon we ordered sangria and fried anchovies. The anchovies were fresh but very cold as they had likely been sitting out waiting to be served. The sangria was nothing special. We wanted to order dinner but opted out after it took over an hour to get what we did get. The only server I saw that was providing excellent service was the gentleman in a hat. We weren’t fortunate enough to get him as our server.

El Minibar is an absolute gem in Madrid! The food is wonderful, offering creative and delicious tapas like the award-winning Tapa Bretón. The atmosphere is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home instantly. On top of that, the space is beautiful, cozy, and full of character. It is the perfect spot for a casual yet memorable dinner. Highly recommended!

A small place near central Madrid. Air conditioned which was a savior today at 98degrees. Had a tomato and lettuce salad, gazpacho, spiced potatoes and fried cod with shrimp. Everything was excellent and in tapas portions was more than enough for two people. All washed down with beer. The menu is larger and varied and portions can be tapas sized or larger for sharing with a bigger group. Definitely worth a lunch or dinner stop.

Excellent tapas experience in Madrid. I came here on a Sunday afternoon around 1:00 PM right when they opened, and within a few minutes the place filled up quickly. I didn’t have a reservation, but since I was dining solo they were kind enough to seat me. You may want reservations if you’re coming during busy hours.
I had the melted goat cheese appetizer with what tasted like fig jam and a balsamic glaze, paired with the bread they served, absolutely delicious and very rich in the best way. I also ordered the ham croquettes, which were excellent as well. Between those two dishes and two Cokes, it was more than enough food for one person.
The atmosphere is quaint and very Madrid. The staff was efficient and friendly. I read many great reviews beforehand and after eating here I understand why. A local favorite. Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic tapas in central Madrid.

My dining companion and I were looking for a quick drink and snack after touristing hard. We found this cozy place right off the main drag. We ordered drinks, and food, tuna tataki, and the duck confit. Both delightfully tasty, savory, and rich. What a treat! Our appetite satiated, we once again took to the crowded streets of Madrid.
Josh Siu★★★★★
Food was good. Service was good (although we heard one of the servers be a bit curt with the next table about having to buy food to sit at the table, not just drinks). They offered a free little tapa while we waited for our food. Space is a bit smaller so you might be at the bar during a busy time.
My spouse wanted lemonade but they didn’t have any. When asked for water with lemon and they cut an entire lemon to add to her water - awesome!
What to got:
- ham croquettes
- shrimp croquettes (a hint of spiciness)
- crispy wild boar (in a spring roll deep fried outer layer)

Absolutely amazing experience! The food was outstanding—fresh, full of flavour, and beautifully presented. Ricardo provided exceptional customer service, making us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived. He was friendly, attentive, and went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. Highly recommend, and we’ll definitely be coming back!

Delicious food, we had chicken and vegetable paella, and the spaghetti carbonara, with a glass each of tinto de verano (red wine and lemon soda, very refreshing). The drinks came with complimentary olives which had a lovely, slight spicy edge. We sat in the underground dining room, it was beautiful and cool, with great music. We're tourists and ate at about 6.30pm so had the place entirely to ourselves. Highly recommend!

The place was quite ok. The food was good but nothing that I blew my socks off. I felt like the restaurant itself was a bit touristic. Staff was accommodating and nice.

Incredible restaurant! The food tasted extremely fresh and authentic and was served quickly. Marci (I believe he’s the owner) was incredibly kind and accommodating. Even though there wasn’t a table available for my party when we arrived, we only had to wait for less than 10 minutes.
Now about the food. Each bite kept getting better and better! We ordered the Jamon Imperico, Bull Tail Gyoza, Honey Eggplant and the Crispy Fried Pig Ear and all of them were delicious! This was also enough food for 4 people. The jamon especially was some of the best we had during our trip. We would definitely come back!
Anastasija Damjanovska★★★★★
Great place for tapas. There might be a bit of a wait, but totally worth it. Everything was super delicious, staff was nice.

Although the atmosphere seemed inviting, we were disappointed in the end.
First, the service was a bit slow. And not the friendliest we had encountered while on our trip. So not a good start.
When reviewing the menu, we ordered several tapas for the table. Once they arrived, we sampled all and felt the food lacked freshness compared to all the others we tried over the last several days.

Yummy food! Good portions! Good drinks! Nice small place with good service. The guys are funny too. Gave us Americans some shots and recommendations for churros as they were closing late on a Sunday night. Awesome experience! The area outside is very nice too. I visited Arrabal Madrid for breakfast, and it was a great experience. The restaurant is located right in the middle of Plaza Mayor, making it a perfect place to enjoy the atmosphere.
I ordered the English Breakfast, which included a fresh juice and a coffee in the price. I don’t drink coffee, so the waiter kindly offered me extra juice instead. It wasn’t necessary, but I really appreciated the gesture. I also ordered a large salad with eggs and olives, and it was absolutely delicious.
The waiter spoke excellent English and was friendly, attentive, and very helpful throughout my visit. This is exactly how great service should be. Thank you for the wonderful experience, and I wish you many happy and satisfied customers.

Sitting out on the terrace overlooking Plaza Mayor is definitely a bit touristy, but it makes for a nice way to spend an evening. Arrabal is known for cachopo and it was definitely worth ordering. Be warned - it is a huge portion and definitely enough for two people. The oxtail tacos and the fried eggplant were also tasty: however, the chocolate cake may have been the star of the evening. Daniel and Antono took very good care of us.

Nice location in the plaza. Clean table and nice cooling water spray in summer. The staff named Angelo was very kind and the food was great. We had a good meal.

Had a very enjoyable dining experience at Arrabal. The restaurant offers a vibrant yet elegant atmosphere, combining modern style with the lively energy of central Madrid.
One of the highlights is the ambience and interior design. The space feels stylish, modern, and welcoming, with a comfortable setup that works well for both casual meals and social gatherings. The atmosphere is lively without being overwhelming, creating a pleasant and relaxed dining environment.
The food was excellent, with dishes that were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. I especially appreciated the creativity of the menu and the quality of the ingredients. The combination of traditional Spanish influences with modern presentation made the dining experience feel refined yet approachable.
The drinks and overall presentation also added positively to the experience, making it a great place not only for dining but also for enjoying the social atmosphere of Madrid. The service was attentive, professional, and friendly throughout the visit. Staff members were welcoming and ensured that everything was handled smoothly.
Another positive aspect was the location, which is convenient and surrounded by the lively atmosphere of central Madrid, making it easy to include as part of an evening out.
Overall, a memorable and satisfying restaurant experience with quality food, modern atmosphere, and excellent service. Arrabal Madrid Restaurante is highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy stylish dining in Madrid.

I’m going to be so honest, I do not understand what all this hype about this sandwich was. I read all the good reviews and expected to be met with a tasty sandwich but once I sank my teeth into the sub, it told a different story. The bread roll was cold, the calamari was bland and you could tell it was not freshly fried, and to top it all off, the sandwich was dry. I understand that this might be the traditional way to serve the sandwich but I must be honest, it was not that enjoyable. Patatas bravas was alright, a pretty sizable portion, definitely more flavourful than the calamari sandwich 🤷♀️🤷♀️ As a tourist, I’d say try it to say you’ve tried it, but it’s not the end of the world if you don’t, because it’s a mediocre sandwich
Tj Gross★★★★☆
A hidden gem. This place does one thing and one thing well. If you want to eat inside. Line up behind the red felt poles. If you want take out go the the door to the right. Once in they will tell you where to sit. You will then need to read the menu on the wall and walk up to the counter and order. Definitely get the El bocadillo de calamares. (Calamary Sandwhich) ask for a lemon wedge and get some olives as well.
Pamela★★★★☆
I first came across this place in the Spain edition of Lonely Planet, which described it as “a spot worth trying.” So after visiting a museum one afternoon, we decided to check it out. The menu is simple—the most famous item, of course, is their fried calamari sandwich. I also ordered the patatas bravas after noticing almost every table had them. A small portion of olives was served on the side.
Overall, the sandwich that caught our interest truly lived up to its reputation. The calamari rings were fresh and pleasantly chewy. Although it’s called a sandwich, it’s actually closer in size to a small baguette—quite a generous portion for a very affordable price, offering great value. The only catch is that the sandwich doesn’t come with sauce by default; it relies on the seasoning of the calamari itself (salted, and slightly on the salty side). If you’d like extra flavor, you can ask for condiments like fresh lemon, mayo, or the same spicy sauce used on the patatas bravas. The bravas themselves were decent—nothing extraordinary, but they did the job. The olives were a nice touch, helping cut through the oiliness. That said, the sandwich can be a bit dry, so pairing it with a drink is definitely recommended. All in all, a place well worth a visit!
P.S. They also offer takeout service, though the line for that can be a bit long.
Chi Fung Lau★★★★★
An absolute must-visit in Madrid! We arrived around 12:30 PM and were pleasantly surprised that we only had to wait a few minutes to get a spot, which is impressive given how popular this place is.
We ordered the classic fried calamari sandwich (bocadillo de calamares) and the pimientos, and both were fantastic. The calamari was fresh and perfectly fried, and the peppers were a great accompaniment.
Between the excellent food quality and the fair prices, it’s easy to see why this spot is a local favorite. Definitely worth a stop for an authentic taste of the city! 👍
Emily — Emily Eats Everywhere★★★★★
You MUST try the fried squid sandwich from La Campana. This iconic sandwich is typical Madrilenian cuisine, and it’s just so good.
Juicy and perfectly-tender breaded and deep-fried squid rings are packed into a small baguette. It’s served right away, so it’s fresh and warm. Top it with lemon juice and—of course—alioli (delicious Spanish garlic mayonnaise), and it’s just divine.
Know that this place is always packed. Whether you’d like to dine in and enjoy a vintage Spanish bar experience or get it to go, be prepared to wait in line. But, once you order, the sandwiches come super fast.
With fantastic sandwiches that cost less than 5 euros each, you’ll want to come back to this place again and again.

This was our first meal on Madrid soil and we wanted to make it as authentic as possible!
In the heart of the old town, cozy cobble streets and 200 year old buildings is this wonderful place!
Owner personally serves us with big smile! Old brick arches added to the vibe and we loved it even before food came!
We opted for few options including shrimp, potatoes, anchovies, octopus, crockets and some beer on tap. We tried everything and while i didnt love everything and skipped anchovies we were all full and happy! To send us off the owner brought us all a complimentary shot!
Highly recommend this place for a quick bite!
Thank you for bringing Montreal vibe to us

El Mesón del Boquerón feels like stepping into an old Madrid postcard — the kind that’s still alive and full of character. The service was excellent, genuinely friendly in that effortless, local way that makes you feel at home right away.
We had pulpo a la gallega, boquerones, and morcilla — everything was spot on. Fresh, perfectly cooked, and served with that classic charm you can’t fake.
It’s a small place with a big soul, where even the stools feel like they’ve got stories to tell. A truly special corner of Madrid that reminds you why these traditional spots matter. 🐙🍷✨

U can tell the history of this tapas tavern by its interior and the 3 stars serving at the place. 😄 though I was traveling alone, I still ordered 3 tapas and took away some for breakfast 😅. The food was great, and the people were super nice and friendly. Interior is a bit worn but I see it as history. This might be the reason that its entrance is not as appealing as the other taverns nearby. Also, air conditioning is kind of weak but it is rather common in the old shops there. It was all in all a very enjoyable dining experience. A recommended eatery in Madrid.
Rachel Xenophon★★★★★
My husband and I randomly found this place while exploring and I'm so glad we did. It is such a gem of a place. We got patatas bravas, chorizo and some tortilla and loved every single bite. We also completely loved the wonderful gentleman who waited on us and introduced us to an incredible white wine from Portugal where he told us he was from. The food, wine and waiter were so great that we came back a second time on our last day of a 5 day trip just to see him and eat the food again. There was a language barrier for sure so we couldn't talk to him as much as we would have liked to, but he made us feel so welcome and even joked around with us (because we were in Real Madrid jerseys and he likes Atleti). I used Google translate (English to Portuguese) before we left to tell him what a great impression he and his establishment made and that we would remember it and him forever and hope to come back one day.

I went here randomly with my friend, and the owner welcomed us so kindly. The place was so cozy and classic, and the food was really good. I'll recommend it to everyone who visits Plaza Mayor. Qué rico!
Tips for Choosing the Best Tapas Experience
Navigating the dining scene near a major landmark requires a bit of strategy to ensure you get the best value for your money. While the list above provides excellent starting points, understanding the local customs and timing can significantly enhance your culinary adventure. The following tips will help you blend in with the locals and taste the food at its absolute best.
Time Your Visit Strategically
Spanish meal times are later than in many other countries. Lunch typically starts around 2:00 PM, while dinner rarely begins before 9:00 PM. If you arrive earlier, you will often find empty restaurants or limited menus. For the best atmosphere, visit during the "vermú" hour around 1:00 PM or join the late-night crowd after 9:30 PM.
Look for the Napkins on the Floor
In traditional tapas bars, cleanliness is not always next to godliness. Seeing a scattering of used napkins and toothpicks on the floor is actually a sign of a great bar. It indicates high turnover, lively conversation, and a focus on food quality over constant sweeping.
Order the House Specialty
Every reputable tapas bar has a signature dish that keeps people coming back. Before ordering, look around to see what other tables are eating or ask the waiter, "¿Cuál es la especialidad de la casa?" This is usually the freshest and most authentic item on the menu, often prepared in large batches.
Stand at the Bar for the Best Price
In many Spanish establishments, the price of food and drinks changes depending on where you consume them. Standing at the bar (la barra) is often significantly cheaper than sitting at a table (la mesa) or on the terrace (la terraza). If you are on a budget, stand up and eat like a true local.
Embrace the "Ración" vs. "Tapa" Distinction
Understanding portion sizes will save you from over-ordering or leaving hungry. A "tapa" is a small, often complimentary or cheap portion served with a drink, while a "ración" is a full plate meant for sharing. For a group, order several "medias raciones" (half portions) to sample a wider variety of flavors.
The beauty of Spanish tapas culture lies in its spontaneity and social nature. It is not just about eating; it is about the ritual of moving from bar to bar, sharing plates, and engaging in loud, passionate conversation. While the area around Plaza Mayor can be overwhelming, taking the time to find a quality establishment is always worth the effort.
As you wander through the historic streets, let your senses guide you. Follow the sound of clinking glasses and the aroma of olive oil, and you will likely stumble upon a memorable meal. Enjoy the journey, and "¡Buen provecho!"
