The area surrounding the Royal Palace of Madrid is a study in contrasts. One moment you are standing in the vast, echoing Plaza de la Armería, and the next you are lost in the narrow, sloping streets of the La Latina and Austrias neighborhoods. It is an area steeped in royal history, but it is also one of the most vibrant living quarters in the city.
For visitors, the challenge is rarely finding a place to eat, but finding the right place. The streets directly adjacent to the palace can be a minefield of overpriced tourist traps serving reheated paella and bland sangria. To experience the true culinary soul of this historic district, you need to know where the locals go when they wake up hungry.
Breakfast in Madrid is a ritual, often starting light and social. It might be a quick espresso with a flaky pastry at the bar, or a leisurely late-morning feast that blends seamlessly into lunch. The Spanish have perfected the art of the mid-morning "almuerzo," a substantial second breakfast that often features the city’s iconic fried bread and chocolate.
Brunch, as an international concept, has also been wholeheartedly embraced by the capital. In the winding streets behind the palace, you will find stylish cafes serving avocado toast and specialty coffee alongside traditional bars dishing up porras and tortilla de patatas. The diversity is staggering, catering to every palate and budget.
Choosing where to eat is about more than just fuel; it is about atmosphere. You might want to sit on a sun-drenched terrace overlooking a quiet plaza, or you might prefer the standing-room-only energy of a century-old marble bar. The best spots offer a sense of place that connects you to the city’s rhythm.
We have walked these streets, sampled the menus, and observed the morning crowds to bring you a curated list of the best options. Whether you are fueling up before a tour of the palace or recovering from a late night of tapas hopping, these spots will set the tone for your day.
Below, you will find the definitive guide to the best breakfast and brunch spots near the Royal Palace of Madrid. From historic institutions to modern hidden gems, these are the places worth getting out of bed for.

Steve Pulis★★★★★
Best breakfast in Madrid. We loved everything. It tasted healthy and fresh. The coffee was good too. You won’t go wrong. We sat outside and loved the morning vibe of everyone headed to work.
Ksenia Held★★★★★
I’m starting to think all the food in Madrid is out of this world, but Scarlett really stands out. This breakfast and brunch spot is awesome! They have an amazing selection of specialty coffee and a huge variety of brunch options to choose from. Even though the place was completely full, the service was impressively fast. We tried the Benedict Ibérico and the Bagel Ibérico, and both were absolutely incredible. If you're looking for a high-quality brunch with a great atmosphere, this is a must-visit!
Cristina Mitroiu★★★★★
The place looks good inside. They also have a terrace outside. The food is good, both the eggs benedict and the chicken salad. I also had pancakes for dessert, they were also very good, the chocolate ones. The staff is friendly.
Wadad Lahad★★★★☆
A nice place in Madrid to enjoy your coffee and breakfast.
The place has an indoor and outdoor.
The place is always busy.
The service is very good and fast.
The coffee taste is good.
Their variety of toasts are delicious.
Sophia Robbie★★★★★
We stumbled upon this place while walking by and decided to give it a try. We were delighted with our decision. It’s fantastic that they serve breakfast all day. My husband opted for a breakfast meal, while I chose the chicken masala. I must say, it was an absolute delight. Unlike many other places we visited, this one offered chai lattes, which was a huge relief. I was thrilled to find a place that served chai lattes, and it turned out to be an incredible experience.

Absolutely best salmon eggs Benedict ever. The coconut smoothie was delicious as well; I drank it sooo fast. 10/10 service and cutest seating areas. Loved getting a seat by the window and being able to have brunch with a gorgeous view. Perfect place to stop by after touring the palace!

Very good breakfast and brunch with fresh, quality ingredients and well-prepared dishes. The pastries and coffee were excellent, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. A great place to start the day, and one I’d happily visit again.
Trevor★★★★★
We were rushing to get to the Royal Palace on Tuesday morning and we were in dire need of some breakfast after a long day of travel the night before. We looked up some reviews and saw this place at a 4.9 and I honestly think it should have a perfect five. We had what we thought was the best breakfast we had in our 18 days of Europe here. The food was absolutely delicious, freshly cooked, presented well, And very tasty. The service was quick and once we told the waiter that we were in a rush, we were in and out in about 40 min, which is exactly what we needed to do. There are only about 15 tables in the restaurant and it is a small intimate venue but the location is almost perfect if you're looking for a place to stop or visiting the Royal Palace of Madrid. Definitely consider it if you are in the area.
Jacky Wu★★★★★
The food was absolutely delicious and full of authentic Vietnamese flavor. The pho was rich and comforting, the spring rolls were fresh and crispy, and the service was warm and attentive. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, and everything felt clean and welcoming. I really enjoyed my dining experience here and would definitely come back again. Highly recommended!
Lars Aray★★★★★
This place is so famous in Madrid. The dishes are simply perfect, they have the right balance between softness and consistency, making them absolutely irresistible. Plus, the taste is incredible and really so high quality on the ingredients
The atmosphere is so chill, and the service is friendly. One of the best pancake experiences I’ve ever had. Highly recommended! When I return to Madrid, I’ll definitely visit again.

Austin Graff★★★★★
What a great brunch spot! Walking in during the very late morning on a Friday in September, I got a seat right away. The space is small, but they use the space well to fit a handful of small tables.
The server was very quick and friendly. He recommended the chilaquiles with beef and wow. It was excellent as was the pistachio latte. I’d definitely go back!
Jacques van Niekerk★★★★★
What a wonderful find in the heart of La Latina! Cocuiza is a charming, quaint brunch spot where it’s immediately clear that real time, care, and attention go into every dish. Everything we tried was meticulously prepared and beautifully presented, with interesting flavour combinations that were both creative and absolutely delicious.
The recommendations were excellent and made the whole experience even better. The owner was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and took the time to explain everything perfectly, which added such a personal touch to our visit.
A truly special little place with fantastic food, unique flavours, and genuine hospitality. Highly recommended — we will definitely be coming back!
Emmett Grames★★★★★
Surprisingly large portions, be ready to share if you order one of the pancake stacks. Really good food, fresh drinks, and service, the prices are a bit higher but for the quantity and quality it really is worth it. The staff were very friendly. We got there early on a Sunday, but if you plan to go mid-morning you might want to call ahead and reserve a table, they were very busy when we left, with a line out the door.
Olivia Seward★★★★★
Best breakfast place in Madrid. If you care about food…come here!! The pancakes were the best I’ve ever had in my life- perfect flavor and perfect texture. The hash browns were also great too. I will be coming back to try more on the menu. Also mentioning there’s self serve water which is great!! So happy we found this spot.
Sarah Terry★★★★★
I got the watermelon juice & sweet salty chicken. This is way better than any chicken & waffles I’ve had in the USA. Amazing. Great sauce& flavor. I like the coleslaw on it too. It was very busy so I would recommend making a reservation.

OMG. This place is so nice. Came here for Sunday brunch at 1:15pm. It was busy but there were several tables free. I was sat immediately.
I ordered a flat white with caramel, a Detox smoothie, and the French Toast. Everything was absolutely delicious and visually stunning. The server was friendly and responsive. Such a wonderful place. Highly recommend!!

I had a lovely breakfast at Le Praliné Brunch. The food was absolutely delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. Everything we ordered was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. The service was also excellent ,the staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. The atmosphere was cozy and perfect for a relaxing brunch. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great breakfast spot in Madrid, and I’ll certainly be coming back!
Madalina M.★★★★★
Great place for brunch, will go again. The food is really good, the ingredients are fresh and high quality. The staff is nice, very polite. The atmosphere is typical brunch place, full around the time we went, 11-12, but no wait time as 1 table seem to always be free as soon as new people came. I would also like to mention that the coffee is surprisingly good, most brunch places have average coffee, but this one has such good coffee you would think it's the main product. Congrats to the entire team for the work ethic and attention to details. P.S. They have pictures for the food and it comes looking exactly like the pictures.
Katie May★★★★★
The BEST brunch spot! The special for 20€ had so much food that you could probably share with another person. Everything was so fresh, portions were great, and coffee was fantastic.
Alexandra Carremans★★★★★
Lovely place for brunch, I had the kimchi bagel with chicken. Best bagel I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot. On the menu you can scan a Qr code for pictures of each dish, and it will come out looking as beautiful as on the picture. 10/10 recommend.

Very friendly and attentive service. We were served by Noelia, and we really appreciated her warmth and cheerful attitude. The food was good, although we would have appreciated a wider selection of savoury options.
דוד משה★★★★★
We highly recommend Billy Brunch if you're in Madrid!
The food was absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere was really cool, warm, and pleasant. The whole experience was great from start to finish. A special thanks to Yuri, who was incredibly friendly, spoke excellent English, and made us feel comfortable throughout our visit.
We really enjoyed our meal and would definitely come back. Highly recommended!
Mona Le★★★★★
I was looking for a brunch place in Madrid that had outdoor seating so I can take in the views of the city. This was such a cute brunch place, great vibes, and the food was delicious. My server Alexis was very helpful and attentive. He served me water and made sure I was comfortable while I waited for my outside table, and he had it ready for me as soon as they were done eating. Highly recommend this place 🙂
Nazz★★★★★
Searched online for the best pancake stack and this one came up on top with 4.9 stars. Quaint place with some cool and unusual art decor, creating a warm and comfy space. We only ordered 2 pancake stacks and a coffee, which were delicious. Our waitress was Romina, and she was friendly and accommodating despite our lack of spanish. Our food took very long to come out despite the place being quiet. The bright side to this is thay we did not feel rushed at all. Another cute thing they do, is to present the bill in an egg box. Loved that. A very memorable experience.
Winnie Li★★★★☆
It’s a really cute cafe, I like the Egg Benedict, especially the potato inside! You can enjoy a good time here. Only small improvement is that for the mushroom toast is a bit dry for me. Overall it’s highly recommended for relaxing here~
Thank you the staff, Alan, is really nice ✨ providing the good service.
We have a good time here.

Wonderful decoration. Impressive latte art which is copying my friend’s outfit!! Very sweet coffee of course. They make fresh juices from the squeezing machine. Food looks good and tastes good.
Highly recommended.
Rabia Mehmood★★★★★
Cutest cafe. Very welcoming. The coffee was yum and we got the most adorable designs on the coffee. We also asked for a personalised one as a memory for our girls trip and were surprised with an amazing design. Definitely recommended if your in Madrid 🤌🏼

One of the best eggs Benedict I’ve had! Perfectly cooked poached eggs. The miso and sichuan oil were a great combination and can’t miss it. We also had the avocado toast with truffle sauce which was great as well. The açaí smoothie was fresh and refreshing too. We ended with an almond cake which was awesome, highly recommend this place!
Kremena Ivanova★★★★★
Absolutely loved this place! The atmosphere was wonderful, warm and welcoming, and our waitress was absolutely lovely and made the whole experience even better. She was so friendly, attentive and kind.
I had the bacon sandwich and it was absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful and perfectly prepared. I would definitely come back and highly recommend this place! ❤️
Kamakshi Matai★★★★★
Thanks Jason for the brilliant service. The Cantonese style scrambled eggs were some of the best I’ve ever had and the ‘soft’ cortado as this cafe cutely calls it was perfection. Brazilian coffee beans brewed just right. Come a bit earlier in the day so you don’t need to wait in line. Interiors are also so charming.
Brianna Pedraza★★★★★
Busy restaurant and there can be a line, but don’t stress and don’t let that deter you from waiting. The wait doesn’t take long! The service here is fantastic, quick and genuine. Very good food and coffee as well. We were very happy with this place and would came back! Thanks to server Cami for helping us have a good experience here
Iryna Shaitanova★★★★☆
Beautiful place with a truly magical atmosphere. I absolutely loved the interior design, the vibe, and the overall feeling of the space. It is one of those places where you instantly feel relaxed and want to stay longer. The staff and service were also excellent, very friendly and attentive.
We especially loved the matcha with coconut water. It was delicious and definitely something I would order again.
As for the food, it was just okay. We tried the scrambled eggs with avocado and the eggs Benedict. The brunch dishes were decent, but not particularly memorable. Still, I would definitely come back for the atmosphere and would love to try some of the pastries or cakes next time.

Elena Sandru★★☆☆☆
We went there as a couple only looking for some great cocktails (one of their strongest points) and sweets.
Ainoha who served us was very accommodating and willing to go above and beyond. 5 stars for her.
What we did not appreciate - hence my low rating:
- we had to wait at least 20 minutes. For good restaurants that’s understandable. However there were 4 seats available upstairs (two at the bar, two at a free table). 5 people waiting before us, none of them seated - nor us - at these free seats. When we finally got seated downstairs there were two other free tables with 4 more free seats.
- the cocktail guy (or girl 🤍) was free today. So they had no cocktails. Unacceptable for such a busy place in the middle of Madrid
- we had two of the menu’s stars: the pistachio pancakes and the cinnamon rolls. The pancakes were a disappointment for me - three pancakes, good looking, with a bit of pistachio frosting and icecream on top. But tasteless otherwise. I would not recommend. I appreciated the roll - very sweet for my husband yet ok for me.
- very difficult to drink coffee out of the very nice looking cups
I would definitely not recommend nor come again.
Pauline Philippi★★★★★
This breakfast spot was absolutely incredible!! We just needed a place that opened early before we left for the airport, and we were very happy for an 8am opening. My daughter had the burger (yes, for breakfast, and she wasn’t the only one!) and I had the French toast. I didn’t get to taste the burger because it was completely gone before I had a chance to ask for a bite. But the French toast, besides the beautiful display, came with a little scoop of ice cream that nicely replaced the need for syrup, plus fresh strawberries and blueberries and a caramelized banana. The details were so nicely done. Even my cappuccino was so beautifully crafted! I cannot recommend this place enough. Every food item that came out to other tables looks delicious and I’m sending my other daughter here when she studies in Madrid next semester!
Juan Campo★★★★☆
It’s a popular tourist spot, so it’s usually bustling with visitors, partly because of its reputation and the hype surrounding it. The atmosphere is lively, but it definitely feels quite touristy.
The food is decent overall, although the menu leans heavily toward desserts. One thing I didn’t particularly like is their practice of encouraging customers to leave a five-star review at the end of the meal. When it seems to be a standard part of the experience, it takes away some of the authenticity and usefulness of the reviews when deciding whether to visit. The approach to tipping also felt a bit excessive.
Overall, the food is decent, but considering the crowds and potential wait, I’m not sure the experience is worth the hype.
Sarah Dettmann★★★★★
Brunch here ! Such a good spot. Amazing food, service, and I loved the vibes/ decor.
The salmon Benedict was super fresh, and the potato waffle with truffle mushroom is a must if you love mushrooms. The Pistachio Obsession café was creamy, aesthetic, and honestly so good.
Alejandro gave great service, friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Would definitely go back.
The Foodie Crusader★★★★★
This place had a bit of a wait, but i think it was worth it. Its very nice and cozy inside. The staff is nice and friendly. The food was excellent. The latte was delicious. The Spanish omelet was super yummy. It basically reminds me of potatoes au gratin wrapped with a thin sheet of egg. I got mine with pork belly and it was delicious and filling for me. We ordered the French toast by mistake but it worked out for us. It was absolutely delicious. The toast was soft, sweet, and flavorful, the ice cream and fresh berries made it all come together nicely. The prices are reasonable. I would definitely come back, and i would make this a must visit.

Aleksandra Stojanović★★★★★
This is a great place for the families, there is a pool filled with soft small balls that kids can jump in to play. It's so fun, if I were to have children I'm sure they would have great time here. They also provide some colored pencils and books for kids when they're seated at the table. As for service and food it was great, and fast as well. They all speak English, we got properly seated and Dani made sure to serve us properly, even asked for any allergies which I don't remember the last time someone made sure of restrictions while ordering. Portions are big, food and drinks delicious. We are actually already planning on coming back for some pancakes as well!
Diana V★★★★★
Great place for breakfast or brunch. I had the avocado toast with a poached egg on top and was amazing! The guys taking the order were really nice and friendly. Overall, great experience and would recommend 100%!

He had a wonderful breakfast in the Brunch colors opera. Great atmosphere . Love the decoration. The food was delicious!
The down side for us that there wasn’t any high chair for our little kids so in was less comfortable for us.

Everything was perfect! We sat at this beautiful place , it was amazing. The food was good too! And The service was so so nice! The pancakes could have been better though, they were a little dry.
Björn Nowack★★★★★
We have been here for breakfast and it was just delicious. Music was great as well and our waiter. Check out the smoothies. So good with coconut water 🙃
Aleksandra Kureń★★★★★
A beautiful place and a great spot for breakfast/brunch in Madrid. The restaurant offers great options for people who like to have both savory & sweet breakfast for a good price. We’ve had amazing toast with avocado and hummus, acai bowl with fruits and chocolate, freshly squeezed orange juice and tea, all for 17€. The owner is really kind and has a great vibe. We’ve been really sorry we couldn’t squeeze in another breakfast in this place because of an early flight. 10/10, would definitely recommend!
Jem★★★★★
We got the jam toast and the salmon toast, very well executed, super tasty! Service was awesome, our server was super friendly!
Essential Tips for Breakfast Near the Royal Palace
Navigating the morning dining scene in Madrid requires a little local knowledge. The timing, the ordering etiquette, and the choice of venue can drastically alter your experience. To ensure you eat like a local and avoid the common tourist pitfalls, keep the following advice in mind before you head out.
First, adjust your internal clock. If you arrive at a breakfast spot at 8:00 AM, you will likely be dining alone with the early commuters. The true breakfast rush for locals happens between 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM, and brunch usually peaks even later, often starting at 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM. Second, understand the difference between "desayuno" and "brunch." A traditional desayuno is usually quick and light, often consisting of a coffee and a pastry or toast with tomato. If you want a heavy meal of eggs, pancakes, or burgers, look specifically for a "brunch" menu.
When ordering coffee, be specific. "Café con leche" is half coffee, half milk; "cortado" is espresso with a splash of milk; and "café solo" is a straight espresso. For a cold option, "café con hielo" is very popular. Regarding the star of the show—churros—remember that the thicker, doughier version is called "porras." Both are traditionally dipped in thick hot chocolate, which is meant for drinking, not just sipping.
Finally, be mindful of seating. In many traditional bars, standing at the bar is significantly cheaper than sitting at a table on the terrace. If you are on a budget, do as the locals do: order at the counter, stand, eat quickly, and enjoy the energy of the room. It is the authentic way to start the day.
The streets surrounding the Royal Palace are best explored on foot, and a good breakfast is the perfect foundation for that exploration. Whether you choose a historic café that has served royalty or a modern brunch spot that caters to the Instagram crowd, the area offers a remarkable depth of flavor.
Take your time, soak in the atmosphere, and don’t be afraid to step away from the main thoroughfares. The true magic of Madrid’s morning culinary scene is often found in the quiet corners and unassuming doorways. With a full stomach and a good coffee, the history and beauty of the palace will feel even more magnificent.
