Casa Carmin was an absolute highlight of our trip! We originally stopped in just for a quick glass of wine and a couple of tapas, but after seeing the incredible dishes being served to neighboring tables, we had to dive full in. Everything we ordered was exceptional—delicious, high quality, and fantastic value for the money. The menu and wine selections are outstanding. What truly elevated our experience was our server, Emily. She was so personable, warm, and easy to chat with. She gave us perfect wine and food recommendations and struck the ideal balance with her hospitality—engaging and attentive without ever feeling overbearing. It was so refreshing to connect with her (and hear about her sweet dog, Deminoir!). If we were staying in Madrid longer, we would easily be back every night. Highly recommended!

Lovely meal! Walked in at 12 for lunch on a Sunday and had a nice impromptu meal. Ordered the Japanese gyoza, salmon, and tuna salad. All was pretty good in taste, and the restaurant itself was comfortable and with good service. Leticia was our server and did a nice job with the meal. She even arranged for a candle for my wife’s birthday. All in all I recommend this place if you are in the area, not to travel from far, but convenient and nice if nearby.

Overall a great experience in an elegant setting with delicious food. However, the service left something to be desired - we could hear shouting from the kitchen, staff were joking around loudly, and our order took much longer than expected to arrive. A bit more professionalism would have made the experience truly outstanding.

We went in thinking this would be a nice restaurant with great service but we were very wrong. The atmosphere is nice but the service and the food are unremarkable. First of all, we asked for bread for 2 persons, which you pay for. This was not brought and we had to ask again the same server who eventually brought them right before our food arrived, with no butter. We asked another server for butter, which they never brought and we ended up eating just plain bread. For the food we ordered the Carmen Burger and Tartufo Tagliatelle. The burger was not bad, but the tagliatelle was tasteless, and the pasta was way too overcooked. Not even a bit beyond al dente. Literally pasta cooked for a 90 year old, for like 30 minutes. Do not recommend this place unfortunately.

We sat outside in the patio tonight (Feb 26) and weather was comfortable. No heater needed. Served was attentive. We ordered burratina Fresca con pesto (salad), patatas bravas and nidos de lechuga (lettuce wraps) which were so good. We ordered a second time for a larder ration. We definitely recommend the patatas bravas and the lettuce wraps. For dessert, we ordered torrija caramelizada (French toast with caramel) and vanilla ice cream. It was delicious. Hit the

Amazing place! Great food and atmosphere, good deal for a “menu of the day”

A very nice place near the Retiro. It is spacious with a terrace perfect for spring. They serve typical Spanish food of tapas, salads, fish and meats but with a modern twist, like the duck rolls or the spicy salad with goat cheese. We ordered everything to share: Russian salad with tuna belly and prawns, very tasty, a salad of seasoned Iberian tomato, a little bland, the duck rolls were very good but small, and the grilled octopus to share, spectacular, seasoned with a vinaigrette. For dessert we ordered the lemon and meringue tart, impressive! The service was very attentive and friendly, they were quick and gave us good recommendations! 😇

Highly recommend this restaurant. Avoid going after 9pm as the line gets long. All the tapas we choose were so so delicious and they produce the desserts there as well and it’s so nice to see, very comfortable space as well and the staff was nice, it’s a walk in place

Beautiful simple food done right. Each tapas was full of flavour and the team here full of passion. Thank you

Service and food were great! We came without a reservation during lunch time and they kindly managed to seat us. Best batatas bravas and croquetas we had in Madrid!

Super nice service. The food is so tasty. Quite big inside, 3 levels. Makes the wait time acceptable without reservation.

Excellent place! The deserts were spectacular. Our favorite was torrija and churros with chocolate. The service was splendid. We highly recommend it. If you are ever in Madrid, you have to visit them! 😊

We randomly found this restaurant for lunch and it was a wonderful surprise. The waiter was extremely polite, attentive, and guided us through the menu. We tried foie gras pâté (better than in Paris!), tasty tuna tacos, a bruschetta with sardines, and a large tuna main course with a refined, fresh flavor — the portion was so big we couldn’t finish it. Desserts were also great. The interior feels a bit outdated in style, but the place is spotless and the clientele was elegant, which created a very pleasant atmosphere. Overall, excellent service and high-quality food.

Excellent!!! Top rated! You won't be disappointed, we ordered the Goloso menu and it was a lot of food so better be hungry. Awesome attention, will come back. Please try the cheesecake it's the best I've ever had. Also dont forget to try the canelones or the wagyu crepe.

top class seafood ! Foie gras was a work of art and the tuna dish done 2 ways was great. Cannelloni was rustic and the wine selection was great. the dessert - Tarrrha ( not sure about the spelling ) was heavenly

Nice evening with good service, food and wine. There were two set menus to choose from (with wine and without). Prices were upper side but plates were delicious and surprisingly large size portions. We couldn’t finish two plates each. We loved especially Tuna tataki and langostino salad

Another gem in Madrid! Was worried that since it’s a “chain” restaurant it wouldn’t be good enough but I’m very happy I was wrong! Each dish was a delight! Service was good and the atmosphere was also brilliant but do bring a long sleeve if you are a cold typed AC is on full Blast! We had about 10-11 dishes between the ; of us and can’t fault any! A real treat for a casual meal for lunch or dinner!

Hi , the place is new and looks great , the food is good but the service and manager not friendly at all , we were 3 and he refuse to give us table for 5 , and we have to sit on high tables at the bar , if they need a good business they need to find a new manager with a different attitude.

One of our best food experiences in Madrid. Tortilla de Patatas fantastic. Mussels great. And the cheese cake, out of this world. Alejandro was our great host. Thanks a lot

Between City★★★★☆
The food was okay, and I’d skip the coffee. But for some reason, I keep coming back—for the drinks, catching up with friends, and a bit of people-watching. It’s in a great location near one of Madrid’s iconic landmarks, making it an easy place to stop and linger. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the service is always friendly and welcoming. A lovely spot to unwind and enjoy the city passing by.
Ognian Dimitrov★★★★★
We were staying at the adjoining hotel Hospis Puerta de Alcala and visited the restaurant twice for dinner and for cocktails. The place is very good with a view of Puerta De Alcala, there is a very nice outside garden. The service was excellent, with staff trying to accommodate the customers' every whim. The food was excellent, with low waiting time, I especially want to mention the cocktails and the excellent bartender. Prices were reasonable for central Madrid. I recommend it.
Mahdi Bentaleb★★★★★
Great service and location, food was good. I ordered pad thai de pollo de corral, it tasted sweet with bit of sour. The view and atmosphere at night is amazing. They have a very good cocktail and lemonade. The price is reasonable for the service and location.
R N★☆☆☆☆
The place is located near a very busy roundabout and on a street with heavy foot traffic, so it’s fine for drinks but not ideal for a relaxed dinner. The ambience also wasn’t as nice as it looked in the pictures — the interior is filled with fake plants, which made it feel less authentic and cozy than expected. What was most disappointing, though, was that they allowed some guests to smoke cigars, and the smell was extremely annoying. They should be more considerate and respectful of other customers who are trying to enjoy their meal and the atmosphere. Food is basic, too.
Maria Thi Mai★★★★☆
Conveniently located outside the front door of our hotel, this was an easy choice after a long day of traveling. We wanted a small nibble so just ordered a pizza, salad and fried artichokes. The artichokes were the best we found in Madrid; not too oily or salty and cooked to perfection. We were full before the pizza arrived so took it home. All were filling.

Decor and ambiance A+ Food is beyond believe. We ordered the chicken wings, calamari, padron peppers, Jamon iberico, ham croquettes and the Fabada. The food was way superior to any other food we have visited in Europe in our current 21 days European trip. We arrived and we were able to get a table within seconds. The wood seats was a little hard, but it went well with this restaurant vibe and you will forget about it as soon as you start eating your food. We have no clue how big each item was, but we were able to take it home for a round 2 tomorrow. I have not seen the amount of food each dish has in any of the restaurants we have visited in Europe. Be very hungry! Everything was really good, however, Fabada deserves, not 5 stars, but really a whole galaxy of stars. I was speechless and in another dimension. Really! Ask for Juli. She was attentive, friendly, smiley and knowledgeable of all dishes we ordered. Also, Juli made me feel like I was home talking to a relative as I enjoyed my meals. Outstanding work, Juli. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the great memories we created at La Fragua de Vulcano. I will be back!

Nestled in the walking distance of tourist attractions such as Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real de Madrid, Teatro Real and many other beautiful streets and buildings. Wonderful atmosphere (during world cup period) as there was Mundial on the big screen. I enjoyed the Jamón Iberico and the Grilled Prawns. Very nice hospitaly from the staff especially for a restaurant in the city centre 👍🏻

Nice, casual tapas place with a neighborhood atmosphere. They have a lot of the standard tapas but the servings seem generous and perfect for groups. We had the Cocido Madrileño and it was lovely. The space is lively and fun.

Excellent fresh food and cozy vibe. I had the halloumi salad, Shashuka + avocado, fruit salad. Sadys, Gonza, Jenny were very helpful to explain the ordering process and provide suggestions about the food.

The place was quite pleasant, but a lot of things off the menu were not available as their kitchen was already closed (at 4pm on a working day). They had some pastry options available on the window shop, so I had a ham and cheese toast (as shown in the photo). It was decent but nothing extraordinary. The matcha latte was also okay, although not as sweet as my preference would be. The interior was marvellous though and I loved the vibe indoors. The person I ordered from didn't know English, so I had to practice the little Spanish I know. Perhaps not ideal to have staff that doesn't know English since this spot is right across the popular Retiro park which gathers lots of tourists around.
Beatriz Ruiz de Azcarate★★★★★
We had an early lunch (menú del día) . The waitress was very helpful, friendly, and had the perfect pace to serve the different dishes. She also prepped an impromptu Clara with lemon which we were very grateful for. The terrace is sunny but loud. Inside is very nice. Only thing to improve: the bathrooms need an urgent upgrade and fixture.

Lovely ambience,, in one of the best areas in Madrid ,, the egg dish was well cooked ,,, however the sweet items were just basic and the coffee is unfortunately not drinkable ,, we tried 2 different types and we couldn’t go for a second sip

A very nice Mexican restaurant in the heart of Madrid. Sit inside as outside there is a big road. We had delicious food and great wine. What is truly outstanding is kindness of all the staff as well as the owner. Very attentive, professional and welcoming. Thanks for a wonderful evening.
Adam Layman★★★★★
I stumbled into this place completely by accident. I was walking across the city to run an errand, noticed how charming the storefront looked, and decided to stop for a beer. I'm so glad I did, because it turned into one of the best stops of my entire trip to Spain. I ended up sitting outside on the sidewalk in the sun, watching the city stroll by, and the food absolutely blew me away. I had the red tuna tartare served over a roasted marrow bone, and it came out looking like a work of art: ruby-red bluefin, avocado cream, fresh micro shoots, all plated on a wooden board over newspaper. It tasted even better than it looked. Back home a dish like this would cost three times as much and not be half as beautiful. The Old Fashioned was excellent too, finished with a fresh strip of orange peel. But what really made it was the people. There was a real language barrier, my Spanish is nonexistent, and the staff were patient, warm, and genuinely kind the whole time, going out of their way to make sure I had a great experience. You can tell this place is run with real care. If you're anywhere nearby, stop in. Five stars, easy. I can't recommend it enough, and I wish the whole team great success!

Don't waste your money on food in this place. Two out of four dishes came over cold even though it wasnt busy at all. None of the staff appologised about it, they were not inviting from the start. The food was really appauling, didnt feel fresh and its not worth it. I gave it 2 start just because the guy from the bar was nice, otherwise its not worth even 1 star. Better spend your money elsewhere.

We visited Castizo Canalejas several evenings for wine and appetizers and had a full dinner one evening. Lincoln helped us twice and he was amazing. Very attentive and friendly- remembered us both times. He is the reason we visited again for dinner!! The chicken was so juicy and delicious and we loved to artichokes as well. Great place to stop in for a small bite or full dinner. Super cute and chic, feels very relaxed, warm, and comfortable.

Practical Tips for Dining Near Puerta de Alcalá

Dining in this prestigious area requires a bit of local knowledge to ensure a smooth experience. The neighborhood operates on a distinct rhythm that differs from other parts of Madrid, particularly regarding meal times and reservations. Understanding these nuances will significantly enhance your visit and help you dine like a local rather than a lost tourist.

1. Adjust to Local Meal Times

Madrid runs on a late schedule. Lunch (la comida) typically starts at 2:00 PM and can run until 4:00 PM, while dinner (la cena) rarely begins before 8:30 PM or 9:00 PM. If you arrive at a restaurant at 6:00 PM, you will likely find the kitchen closed between services. Plan your sightseeing accordingly and embrace the late dining culture.

2. Book Ahead for High-End Venues

The restaurants closest to the Puerta de Alcalá and the Salamanca district cater to a wealthy clientele and business crowd. The most sought-after tables are often reserved days in advance, especially for dinner on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. A quick phone call or online reservation can save you from being turned away.

3. Understand the "Menu del Día"

If you are looking for value during the weekday lunch rush, look for the "Menú del Día." This fixed-price, three-course menu (including bread and a drink) is a Spanish institution. While some tourist spots inflate the price, many quality restaurants in the area offer an excellent menu del día for between 15 and 25 euros, providing a high-end experience at a fraction of the à la carte cost.

4. Don’t Skip the Tapas Bars

While the area is known for fine dining, you do not need a white tablecloth to eat well. Many traditional taverns and bars serve free or low-cost tapas with a drink purchase. Standing at the bar is not only cheaper but offers a more authentic, social experience. Look for crowded bars with loud chatter; that is usually the sign of good food.

5. Dress the Part

This is one of the more elegant areas of Madrid. While most casual spots welcome tourists in sneakers and t-shirts, upscale restaurants and rooftop terraces may enforce a smart-casual dress code. To avoid feeling out of place or being denied entry to a lounge, leave the beachwear at the hotel and opt for neat, polished attire.

The area around the Puerta de Alcalá is a gastronomic playground waiting to be explored. Whether you choose a historic tavern that has served vermouth for a century or a modern bistro with a creative tasting menu, you are participating in a culture that values food as a celebration of life. Take your time, order a good bottle of Spanish wine, and enjoy the view of one of Madrid’s most beautiful monuments as the city buzzes around you.
