Finding a reliable pharmacy is an essential part of daily life, whether you are a resident managing a chronic condition or a traveler who has just arrived in a new city. In Spain, the pharmacy system is highly regulated and trusted, serving as a primary point of contact for healthcare advice. Unlike in many other countries, Spanish pharmacists are trained to offer clinical guidance for minor ailments without requiring a doctor’s visit.
Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia, is a city of immense historical significance and modern vibrancy. As the final destination of the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, the city welcomes thousands of international visitors every year. This constant influx of people creates a high demand for accessible healthcare services, including well-stocked pharmacies that can cater to blistered feet, travel sickness, and general medical needs.
Navigating the winding, ancient streets of the Old Town can be challenging, especially if you are feeling unwell or need a specific medication urgently. While the city is compact, knowing exactly where to go saves valuable time and reduces stress. Spanish pharmacies operate on a strict rotation system for after-hours service, known as "farmacias de guardia," which is crucial information for anyone needing medicine late at night.
The local healthcare infrastructure in Santiago is robust, with pharmacies strategically located to serve both the residential population and the transient pilgrim community. Many pharmacists in the city are accustomed to dealing with international visitors and often speak English, particularly those located near the Cathedral or the main transport hubs. They can provide advice on treating common walking injuries, sun exposure, and stomach upsets.
This guide aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the pharmacy landscape in Santiago de Compostela. We will highlight some of the most accessible and well-regarded locations to help you find what you need efficiently. Whether you are looking for prescription medication, high-quality skincare, or baby formula, these establishments offer professional service and high standards of care.
Below, you will find a curated list of notable pharmacies located throughout the city, from the historic center to the modern residential districts. These locations have been selected for their accessibility, reputation, and ability to serve a diverse clientele effectively.

We went here late at night - 23:30 and the pharmacist was super nice and very helpful. The medication was much cheaper than we expected and it was super fast. There is a walk-up window even though the place might look closed. Great place!
Iván Caballero★☆☆☆☆
My worst pharmacy experience ever.
They push the most expensive product on you without even asking.
Besides, the pharmacist's job is to guide and advise. If a customer asks about a medication or mentions a pain or discomfort, they should recommend the best option.
Here, none of that happens. You ask for something, and they push the most expensive product on you.
María Cantelar Calvo★★★★★
Whenever I went, they treated me very kindly, even one day in the summer they didn't have the medication I urgently needed and they helped me find the pharmacy on duty. But I especially want to thank the pharmacist who treated me today in the early hours of March 2nd at around 3 am. I had just spent a few hours in the emergency room collecting the medication they had given me. The doctor forgot to prescribe it and even though it was loaded, they couldn't give it to me without a prescription. The pharmacist personally called the hospital to solve it and in a short time she gave me the medicine. Kindness in times when someone is feeling unwell is even more appreciated. All my thanks to this pharmacist.

The staff were very kind tonight. The one who helped me even explained the precautions I should take with the medication. Their professionalism is evident and this kind of service is much appreciated.

The worst customer service ever! They can't even give you a price for a product. They bill without warning and are incredibly rude. They should find a job that doesn't involve customer service. A complete disaster.

5 out of 5 stars. I was in Santiago recently for vacation and came down with food poisoning. I visited this pharmacy to get probiotics and the pharmacists were incredibly helpful. They also spoke English which was nice as my Spanish is not quite up to par when it comes to medicine. Thank you Farmacia Castiñeiriño team! If you are looking for a pharmacy in Santiago, come here

I ordered online and I'm thrilled. It arrived super fast and you can tell how much care went into preparing it. The packaging, the smell when you open it, the samples 😍. I really like their Instagram; I love everything they recommend. I'll definitely order again.
Maria Novoa★★★★★
I placed an online order and everything arrived perfectly. It even included some samples, a toiletry bag, and some Naps wipes as a gift. Plus, the box smelled amazing! The prices are reasonable, and some items are even cheaper than at other pharmacies in Santiago. The in-person service at the pharmacy is also excellent; they always offer advice and answer any questions about medications, cosmetics, etc. And they have parking right across the street! 👏

I want to highlight the excellent service provided by Silvia, a true professional at Farmacia Castiñeiriño. She always attends to you with exceptional kindness, patience, and dedication, taking the time to advise you and offer the best advice.
In addition to her extensive pharmaceutical knowledge, I want to emphasize her ability to easily resolve any situation or problem that may arise with medications, treatments, or any related questions. Her advice goes far beyond the basics, as she also has broad dermatological knowledge, which is greatly appreciated when you're looking for comprehensive and reliable guidance.
It's a pleasure to encounter professionals like her—so approachable, resourceful, and genuinely committed to helping.
Thank you, Silvia, for your excellent work, your dedication, and your consistently impeccable service.
How lucky I am to have met such an outstanding professional.

I needed to get something here for my leg. I looked up the item on google translate and showed a staff member. they were so helpful to me and made the whole transaction really simple as they were so friendly. They even used some English once they realised I was an English speaking tourist which was a great comfort to have.

This is my first order, and besides receiving it super fast, it came wrapped in scented paper, with lots of samples and a note with treatment recommendations. It's a nice touch that shows the care they put into their customers and their service, which is much appreciated and encourages me to buy again. Thank you so much!!
Sheila T. Arribas★★★★★
I'm from Madrid and I started buying online from them as a way of "rewarding" Fatima for her social media videos, which I find incredibly helpful.
But aside from that, every time I buy from them, they shower me with all sorts of samples, and they even write me a personalized note based on my order and the samples they send. It's truly a fantastic experience buying skincare here.
I also had a personalized consultation with Fatima, and with the products and adjustments she recommended, my skin is even better in just three weeks.
For me, it's a pharmacy I can trust. Even though they're so far away, I feel close to them ❤️

Today I went to buy a prescription medication, and the woman who dispensed it made a point of advertising it. This behavior, besides violating my right to privacy, could constitute a crime under Article 197.5 of the Spanish Penal Code, since it involves health-related data, and therefore confidential personal information related to the patient's medical history. We are not talking about a medication that can be dispensed without a prescription. The penalties can reach up to five years in prison. The relationship between patient and pharmacist must be confidential, as the pharmacist is involved in the patient's treatment process.

Honestly, the purchase and delivery process went smoothly and was very quick. However, I have to say that I bought two "lice repellent" products a few days ago, and supposedly they're meant to be used for a long time, at least a school year... and I checked the expiration date, and it's in February! I don't think it's right that a product like that is being sold when it's only two weeks away from expiring.
So I have 200ml to use up in 15 days...😡

One of the best pharmacies in Santiago. Good prices; some over-the-counter items are cheaper than elsewhere.
The service is always excellent.

I visited this pharmacy and had a very negative experience. The price of the cream I wanted to buy was displayed, but at the checkout, the cashier tried to charge me three euros more. When I pointed out the discrepancy, he tried to convince me that the label didn't match the product, but it did. Then, the manager came up and, instead of offering a solution, told us that if there was no other option, she would give it to us for 16.95. I corrected her and told her that the label said 15.95. She said that she was already giving me a one-euro discount (which is a lie, since she was actually raising the price by one euro compared to what I had seen). I emphasize that the real price was 18 euros and that she was already giving it to me for one euro less (which is very unfair, by the way, since it's not my problem that they made the same mistake twice; I don't know what she meant by that). So, when I told her that in these cases the price should be honored, she decided she wasn't going to complain over a euro, which she did.
All of this is missing the part about the looks on their faces.
I see a lack of ethics and professionalism. As the manager, she should know that they, not the customers, should pay for their mistakes. Nowhere else would they make such a fuss; they would simply do what they should have done from the beginning. When a customer finds a product at a certain price, it has to be sold at that same price (as stipulated in the general law for the protection of consumers). And the worst part is that this had already happened to us a while ago with the same cream, which was €3 cheaper, but when we got to the checkout they charged us €18. Once is enough, twice is not...
And they forgot to apologize.
I won't be back. They've lost two regular customers, not because of the mistake, but because of their attitude and lack of professionalism.

The best pharmacist works at this pharmacy. He dedicates time to me, helps me, cares about me, and gives me advice, in addition to dispensing my medication.
I want to share a song I think he might like: "Ultramedicado" by Arnau Blank.
And to everyone who sees this review, mental health is the most important thing. Please work on it.
Thank you, pharmacist ✨

My review is specifically for Diego. This young man's professionalism is impeccable. I asked him for artificial tears for my son, and instead of selling me the most expensive ones that EVERYONE else is selling, he asked us what the real problem was, whether it was simply dry eye or if there was an additional issue. We explained the situation, and he recommended some specific ones, explaining why he chose those particular ones. The same thing happened with vitamins. Every year, when autumn begins, I buy the same ones, the most well-known brands, but he recommended others, explaining the differences between them.
On the way home, my son and I were talking about how wonderful it is that there are still people who work out of vocation, like this young man. We stopped by chance, but I think we'll be going to this pharmacy more often than I ever imagined. My congratulations to Diego.

I love going to this pharmacy. There's always parking right outside, the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, and they're always ready to advise you. Plus, they have their own brand products at much better prices, and they work wonderfully.
Isabel Galego★☆☆☆☆
It's a very convenient pharmacy; whenever I need something, I go there. Yesterday, during the blackout, I went into the pharmacy hoping to buy some Imodium or something because I suddenly came down with terrible gastroenteritis and didn't want to overwhelm the hospitals given the situation.
My plan was to take Imodium and see how I felt before going to the emergency room and overloading the emergency services. The gastroenteritis wasn't mild, and despite feeling unwell, I made a point of getting to a pharmacy since I was completely alone.
The moment I walked in, I was told in a rather unpleasant tone that they couldn't sell me anything. I asked if I couldn't pay in cash, and they said, "No! Can't you see that nothing's working?!"
They didn't even bother to talk to me for a minute to see what was wrong, whether it was urgent or not. I'm worried that I might be a person with a heart condition, a diabetic, or anyone with a serious illness, and not be treated.
I'm very disappointed with the treatment I received, as I'm a reasonable person, someone you can talk to. I didn't want to make a scene, so I went home to continue suffering without saying a word.
It makes me very sad because until yesterday, the service at this pharmacy had always been wonderful…
I think it's a huge lack of empathy when you're in a job like that, and many people don't go to a pharmacy just for sunscreen, a band-aid, or something else trivial.

100% Recommended. It's been my go-to pharmacy for 3 years now because they have qualified staff and provide excellent service. They advise you on anything you need, and if they don't have something, they order it and you get it very quickly, even the same day. The pharmacy is large with a wide variety of products, including cosmetics. I've tried their brand of sun care products, which are good and reasonably priced.

Very bad experience. With a prescription for a single-dose box, they sold me a box of three doses, which, when added together, would have been the correct dose. They sold it to me without any prior notice. I only realized it when I got home and checked my medication. I won't be back.

I felt very uncomfortable with the attitude of the girl who served me. Her facial expressions and gestures during the conversation made the moment quite awkward, to the point where I felt judged for not remembering the exact name of a product.

Good afternoon. My husband discovered this pharmacy about a year ago. We've been going to the doctor in Santiago for 18 years. And one day, while looking for over-the-counter medication, we were surprised to find it was the cheapest place. Since then, whenever we go to Santiago, we stop there. And we're from Moaña!
The pharmacists are always incredibly attentive and have a smile on their faces. They also offer advice if you ask them anything. With every purchase, they always include a little something, like a bag from their pharmacy or something else. While it might not seem like much to most people, it's always a nice touch for us. Keep up the good work! Thank you for all your kindness. Best regards

With a prescription from the ophthalmologist, and since they prescribed antibiotic eye drops, they told me they were keeping the prescription. For a few drops, come on. I'm never going back.
It's a shame I wasn't quick enough to tell them to give me back the prescription because I was going somewhere else; nothing like this has ever happened to me. My opinion of you won't change. And since it's a very contagious viral conjunctivitis, the prescription is very helpful.

I went to buy 650mg paracetamol (generic) and they tried to sell me a similar medication (Dolostop) that costs much more, claiming they "aren't allowed to sell the generic." They couldn't tell me who was preventing them from doing so. I imagine they make more profit on the generic than on the generic, but it seemed like a rip-off to me. Needless to say, I bought it at the next pharmacy. And I don't plan on going back to this one.

Since the change in management, the difference is enormous. The service is friendly and professional, and you can tell they genuinely care about helping you, taking their time and explaining everything clearly. It's wonderful to find a place where they listen to you and look for the best solution for you, instead of just trying to sell you a product.

Master Commander★★★☆☆
The service from the two young pharmacists was excellent. The assistant was fine, although she should refrain from making disparaging comments about the doctors, such as "the doctor didn't feel like working..." It's not a problem being a vocational training assistant with basic education, but it's not smart to make those kinds of comments, typical of someone with an inferiority complex, as they risk being criticized by others for their level of training as an assistant.
I am surprised to read comments about the head pharmacist, presumably an adult, since she is the one most interested in providing quality service. I will shop there again, as the service, at least from the younger staff, is good, so I'm leaving this review to help improve those aspects of the service.
Tips for Using Pharmacies in Santiago de Compostela
Understanding the local nuances of the Spanish pharmaceutical system will ensure you get the care you need without unnecessary complications. Whether you are a pilgrim walking the Camino or a local resident, these practical guidelines will help you navigate the process smoothly and effectively.
Know the "Farmacia de Guardia" System
Pharmacies in Spain do not operate 24/7 like convenience stores in some other countries. Instead, they rotate night and weekend duties. Every pharmacy door displays a sign listing the nearest "farmacia de guardia" (on-duty pharmacy) for that specific day. You can also check local newspapers or ask at your hotel reception to find out which location is open late.
Bring Your Physical Prescriptions
If you require prescription medication, you must have a valid paper prescription or a digital prescription recognized by the Spanish health system. While electronic prescriptions from other EU countries are increasingly accepted, it is safest to carry a physical copy of your prescription. For non-EU travelers, ensure your doctor provides a clear, signed document with the generic name of the medication, not just the brand name.
Ask for Generic Equivalents
Spanish pharmacists are legally required to offer you the cheapest generic version of a drug unless your doctor has specifically indicated otherwise on the prescription. Do not be surprised if the brand you ask for is substituted with a Spanish generic. This is standard practice and ensures you receive the exact same active ingredient at a significantly lower price.
Don’t Hesitate to Ask for Advice
In Spain, the pharmacist is often the first point of contact for minor health issues like colds, allergies, or muscle pain. You do not need to visit a doctor for basic ailments. Describe your symptoms clearly, and the pharmacist is qualified to recommend over-the-counter treatments. This is particularly useful for pilgrims suffering from tendonitis, blisters, or heat exhaustion.
Check for the Green Cross Sign
To identify a pharmacy, look for a bright green cross sign, often illuminated or animated. This is the universal symbol for pharmacies in Spain. They are located frequently throughout the city, so you are rarely more than a short walk away from one, especially in the commercial zones and near the historic center.
The density of pharmacies in Santiago de Compostela means that professional help is always close at hand. The combination of highly trained staff and a rigorous regulatory framework ensures that the medication you receive is safe and authentic. For pilgrims, these pharmacies are a vital resource for maintaining physical health during a long journey on foot.
Ultimately, whether you are exploring the Praza do Obradoiro or resting in a quiet neighborhood, knowing where to find a pharmacy provides peace of mind. Take a moment to note the location of the nearest "farmacia de guardia" when you arrive, ensuring that your stay in this beautiful city remains healthy and worry-free.
