Traveling through Barcelona often means walking for miles between Gaudí’s masterpieces, historic Gothic alleyways, and sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches. While the city’s energy is infectious, unexpected health issues—from blisters and sunburn to allergies or a sudden fever—can derail an otherwise perfect itinerary. Knowing where to find reliable pharmaceutical care without venturing far from the main sights is essential for a stress-free trip.
Barcelona’s pharmacy system is excellent, but it operates differently than in many other countries. You won’t find aspirin or cold medicine in supermarkets or convenience stores; all medication is strictly regulated and sold exclusively at farmacias. Fortunately, these are abundant, easily identified by their bright green neon crosses, and staffed by highly trained professionals who often speak enough English to assist international visitors.
When you are navigating the crowded streets around Sagrada Família or exploring the winding paths of Park Güell, the last thing you want to do is search endlessly for a chemist. This guide focuses specifically on pharmacies located within a short walking distance of Barcelona’s most popular tourist attractions. It ensures that you can quickly resolve a medical need and get back to enjoying the tapas, architecture, and vibrant culture.
Understanding how Spanish pharmacies operate will save you time and frustration. Many operate on standard retail hours, typically from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. However, a rotating system of "Farmacia de Guardia" (duty pharmacies) ensures that there is always a location open 24 hours a day, every day of the week, including Sundays and holidays.
The pharmacists in Barcelona are highly qualified healthcare providers. Unlike in some countries where a pharmacist simply dispenses medication, Spanish pharmacists are empowered to assess symptoms and recommend over-the-counter treatments for minor ailments. If you have a minor cut, a headache, or an upset stomach, they can often provide a solution without requiring a visit to a doctor or a hospital emergency room.
Before you set out for a day of sightseeing, it is wise to note the locations of pharmacies near your planned route. Having this information at your fingertips prevents panic if a child spikes a fever or a traveler realizes they have left essential prescription medication at home. The following list highlights accessible, well-reviewed pharmacies strategically positioned near the city’s major landmarks.

I was visiting Barcelona and fell while running to catch the bus on Passeig de Gracia. Luckily I was right next to this pharmacy. I walked in and Mari cleaned the wound on my arm, disinfected, and put a bandage on it. All for free! She was so kind and helpful. We also had our baby with us and were able to find her favourite pacifiers and some great diapers too. I highly recommend this pharmacy for how amazing the staff is!

Prices were not labeled in the product, it was expensive than we thought so we went back for refund on one item but the staff were very rude.
At first we mistakenly show her wrong receipt but we found correct one. But,
She said it was not theirs with not trying to look at the receipt!!!!
We show it to her, she somehow refused to check
We persuaded her and FINALLY done it.
Is this because she was not in the good mood?
Is it because we are not local?
I really hate to think that it is because we are asian……….
It is not good memory of Barcelona… really…. Sad..
Hope her mood is okay and no other tourist experience the same……….
M ZN★☆☆☆☆
Disrespect with consumers as they charge whatever their system says instead of what is shown in the product, just saying that it lacks a price update and the only solution was leave it or buy it, and they never considered honoring the price informed in the product. And they say that Barcelona is one of the first world City. I guess not, neither some stores employees that lack basic knowledge in consumer law.

As a Chinese tourist who do not speak Spanish, I would highly praise Farmàcia Catalunya for their excellent customer services. Their staff are friendly, helpful and can speak multiple languages. So firstly, there is no communication barrier, and secondly, they can understand my problems and needs, and are able to provide good suggestions. I have been to a few other pharmacies in Barcelona and could not find the product I want. Staff in Farmàcia Catalunya walk the extra mile. They make enquires for me, check their stock, compare different products, and suggest alternatives. They are so smart that I can even WhatsApp with them anytime to follow up on our conversation and place order for the product after I make up my mind. No deposit is required. Response from their staff is amazingly fast. Delivery is on the same day, which is very efficient. My special commendation goes to Elisa who is so nice and pleasant. She has spent much time and effort to help me find the right product that suits me. I feel like talking to a friend rather than to a sales person. It is a small shop at the corner of Plaça de Catalunya but it is very welcoming. Well done!

I had a great experience at this pharmacy. Every time I ask for Anna Lisa, she is incredibly patient, kind, and helpful. She speaks excellent English and always goes above and beyond to provide the best possible service.
Whenever a product isn't available in the pharmacy, she thinks outside the box and does her best to find a solution, even ordering it from suppliers when possible.
This has genuinely been my best pharmacy experience in Spain. Thank you so much, Anna Lisa, for your kindness, professionalism, and outstanding customer service! 😊🙏

Was feeling unwell and I asked the woman at the till in Spanish if we could speak in English, she agreed and first tried to upsell me even though I had requested the generic version. I then asked for the cheapest version. She said it was 10 euro - I handed her fifty and I watched as she was preparing my change. She gave me a twenty a ten, a five and some coins at first I thought the coins would make up the remaining 5 euro I was owed. I said thank and turned away without the receipt and realised she had short changed me of 4 euros. In that moment I knew a mistake had been made but I was so shocked she did it infront of my face and I sensed that she would argue with me if I confronted her and was feeling so unwell I didn’t bother. After now reading all the other reviews I’m positive it was on purpose but honestly I know I don’t look Spanish but I don’t look like/ am not a wealthy tourist either and considering I asked for the cheapest option and most people attending pharmacies are in need of help, I find this an extremely immoral shakedown.

Just horrible...One of the guys, I assume it was the owner since the rest of the staff asked him about every little thing, was just rude! He didn’t take the time to even listen to what I needed (a specific kind of flu medication) and seemed just bothered for any question. Treated all the costumers the same. At the end, he gave me a box of paracetamol at a very high price and said that it was the only thing for flu they had. Go somewhere else and save both your money and time!

AVOID! It's a tourist trap, not a pharmacy. They try to sell you overpriced useless stuff instead of listening to understand you and see what you would genuinely need for your symptoms. I was in shock at the lack of basic understanding of simple symptoms. They wanted to quickly sell you something and go back to their gossiping. Terrible, terrible representation of health proffessionals. This pharmacy should be ashamed of their workers

Disappointed and Upset. Unprofessional.
I went in an bought medication. I asked to have my blood pressure taken. They had a sphygmanomonoter to do this an they agreed. As I was sitting waiting for assistant another worker told another customer to sit beside me a tiny table for blood pressure taking at same time I was there having blood pressure. The other person had a minor cut to finger but had dripping blood and was acting hysterically waving her finger. I asked to wait as I couldn't relax having blood pressure at same time. They refused to wait and then pulled monitor off my arm and refused to take reading. Staff were absolutely horrible and ignorant. Then immediately after realising I bought wrong medication they refused to take back even suggesting I drop it in a box for returned medication at the shop ( without refund). Then they couldn't speak English when it suited them. Awful experience.

We were quoted €180 three separate times, and charged over €200 at the moment of pickup, with zero apology or empathy when we raised the issue.
My partner called this pharmacy to ask for the price of Atopica, a medication we urgently needed to start a treatment for our dog’s autoimmune disease. He was told €180 over the phone. Since Spanish is not his mother tongue, I called the next day to double-check, and the same price was confirmed. Later that day, I went in person with the prescription, and again, the price was confirmed as €180. They had to order it, and asked me to come pick it up the next day.
When I returned to pick it up, they told me the price was over €200. I asked them to confirm, and after checking, they said that was the final price, that their colleague must have made a mistake, and that there was “nothing they could do”. The woman at the counter was dry and visibly annoyed, and offered no apology or empathy. She insisted I didn’t have to buy it, as if I had a choice. This was urgent, and we’d already waited two days.
To make matters worse, when my partner left a review explaining the situation, the pharmacy replied with a message that subtly blames us, denies the problem, and frames it as if we were just being unreasonable. No acknowledgement, no apology, no sense of accountability.
It's okay to get a price wrong, that happens. But what made this frustrating and frankly disheartening was the complete lack of responsibility or basic kindness, especially when you’re dealing with health-related products. When you work in a pharmacy, a little humanity goes a long way. A kind word, a simple apology, a moment of honesty... these are not luxuries. They are the minimum.

While visiting Barcelona I needed sunscreen and stopped by this pharmacy to pick it up. My Spanish is passable but the pharmacist offered to speak in English, which was very accommodating. She found me a bottle of sunscreen and rang it up. Only after I had paid for it was I astonished to find it had cost 22 Euros. 22! That's $36. I was appalled.
I went back the next day to return it. Unopened with the receipt. The same pharmacist helped me, only she refused to speak English and spoke Spanish purposely too fast and when I asked her to repeat herself, she was condescending and rude. Needless to say, she refused to refund my money and I was left feeling insulted. In the end I had to leave the sunscreen at the hotel because I couldn't take it on the airplane.
I encourage you to avoid this pharmacy and it's rude pharmacists altogether.

I went to this pharmacy and asked for Ibuprofen (Advil). The pharmacist behind the counter produced a box with ten 400mg tablets and said it would be 7€ and 20 cents. I asked him if the 7€ price for 10 pills was correct and he said yes, so I left. I walked 3 minutes away and was sold a box of forty 600mg ibuprofen for 2€.
Either the store has outrageous Advil pricing or they try to scam tourists. Either way, this is not a good business.

These people came front different regions of Barcelona to get the medicine, so ist was already expected.
The stuff are very friendly and speak english very well. I was being provided with different options as the methods of cure. Therefore the customers have a degree of freedom to choose one.

The one good thing about this place is it opens 24/7. I was for the first time there to get some sunscreen products and saw the placard saying do not touch so I did not, I was asking the young pharmacist if I need her assistance to get these or can I grab and pay. She treated me like I was about to cut the line for the service, the way she answered me was extremely rude.
The reason I asked bc of the Do not touch sign and I saw the line was long so maybe I can just grab the sunscreen and pay, it was my first time so I wasn’t sure how it works that’s why I only asked a one simple question and the answer from her was ‘WHAT!!!!’
I have no intention to cut the line or disturb her conversation with anyone. If she can simply answer my question that I need her assistance to get those items from the rack I would just go and be in the line.
However after I discovered that I need pharmacist assistance for those items I went in line and was assisted by the nice lady.
With the first young lady i am not sure if it was just her being racist against me. Her behavior says so.

Practical Tips for Using Barcelona Pharmacies
Navigating healthcare in a foreign country can feel daunting, but utilizing a Spanish pharmacy is generally straightforward and efficient. To ensure you receive the best possible care and avoid common pitfalls, it helps to understand the local etiquette and rules. The following tips are designed to make your experience seamless, whether you need emergency contraception, antibiotics, or simply a bottle of water-resistant sunscreen.
- Look for the Green Cross: Pharmacies are marked by a bright green, often illuminated cross. In busy tourist areas, you might walk past several without noticing them. If you need one urgently, ask a local "¿Dónde hay una farmacia?" or check Google Maps, which accurately lists their hours and locations.
- Prepare for the "Farmacia de Guardia" System: If you need medication late at night, on a Sunday, or during a public holiday, you must find the designated duty pharmacy. Regular pharmacies will post a sign on their door listing the nearest open locations, or you can search online for "farmacia de guardia Barcelona hoy."
- Bring Your Passport and Insurance Details: While you do not need a passport to buy over-the-counter drugs, you will need identification if you are picking up a prescription. Having your travel insurance details handy is also useful if you need to file a claim for more expensive medications or medical devices.
- Describe Symptoms, Not Just Products: If you are unsure what you need, don’t just ask for a specific brand name you know from home. Explain your symptoms to the pharmacist—for example, "I have a dry cough and a sore throat." They are trained to recommend the most appropriate and effective local equivalent.
- Know the Difference Between Farmacia and Parafarmacia: A "Parafarmacia" sells non-medicinal health products like cosmetics, vitamins, baby food, and herbal remedies, but they cannot sell actual drugs. If you need real medication, ensure you are entering a proper "Farmacia," not just a health store.
Understanding these small nuances can significantly reduce the stress of dealing with an illness while abroad. The staff at Barcelona’s pharmacies are accustomed to helping tourists from all over the world, so do not hesitate to ask for help. They can often advise on whether a condition requires a visit to a nearby Centro de Atención Primaria (CAP) or if an over-the-counter solution will suffice.
By planning ahead and knowing that high-quality pharmaceutical care is never far from the Sagrada Família, Las Ramblas, or the beach, you can travel with greater peace of mind. While we all hope for a healthy vacation, being prepared ensures that a minor medical hiccup remains just that—minor—allowing you to focus on the unforgettable experience of exploring Barcelona.
