As the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife often surprises visitors who expect only a bustling port and commercial center. Yet, woven into the urban fabric of this Atlantic city is a remarkable network of green spaces, coastal promenades, and subtropical gardens. For locals and travelers alike, these outdoor areas provide a breath of fresh air, a place to exercise, or simply a scenic spot to watch the world go by under the Canarian sun.
The city’s unique geography, rising from a busy harbor to the rolling hills of the Anaga massif, allows for a diverse range of park experiences. You can walk among towering tropical palms in the morning and hike through native laurel forests by the afternoon without ever leaving the municipal boundaries. This contrast between the urban and the wild is part of what makes Santa Cruz a genuinely fascinating destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Beyond the famous landmarks, the parks of Santa Cruz de Tenerife serve as the city’s living rooms. They host weekend family gatherings, open-air concerts, and quiet moments of solitude. The local government has invested heavily in maintaining these spaces, ensuring that accessibility, safety, and biodiversity are prioritized so that everyone can enjoy the mild climate year-round.
Whether you are looking for a playground to entertain children, a flat path for a jog, or a botanical garden to admire endemic flora, the city has a spot for you. Many of these areas are seamlessly connected by pedestrian-friendly routes, making it easy to explore multiple parks in a single day. This guide highlights the most essential outdoor spaces that define the character of Santa Cruz.
When visiting these parks, you will notice a distinct respect for the environment. Water features are designed to be sustainable, and many plant species are labeled to educate visitors about the unique ecology of the Canary Islands. It is this blend of recreation and education that elevates the outdoor experience in the capital.
From the iconic Plaza de España to the hidden trails of the surrounding ravines, these green spaces offer a reprieve from the heat and the noise. As you plan your itinerary, be sure to include these natural respites to experience the authentic rhythm of local life in Tenerife.
Here are the most highly recommended parks and outdoor areas in Santa Cruz de Tenerife that you should not miss.

It is a lovely park and a wonderful place for a relaxing walk in Santa Cruz. Although not very large, it is beautifully maintained and exceptionally clean.
The park is home to many beautiful plants and mature trees, creating a peaceful atmosphere and plenty of shaded areas to enjoy. Everything is clearly well cared for, making it a pleasure to explore.
Whether you're looking for a quiet break from the city or simply want to admire the gardens, this park is definitely worth visiting.

The most amazing park in the city, definitely worth a stroll around, sit on a bench and just enjoy the different types of plants here. It's an open botanical garden, something is always blooming to appreciate.

Every corner reveals something new — exotic plants, hidden paths, fountains and peaceful spots to relax. An absolute must-visit when in Santa Cruz de Tenerife 💚

The park is small but very green. There are two playgrounds and two fountains, as well as several ponds. The paths are paved, and the park is lit in the evening.
Parking near the park is very difficult, so don’t count on finding a space there.
The park is accessible, with entrances from all sides. Where there are level changes, there are ramps. There are two regular restrooms and one portable toilet, but none are accessible.

Beautful park, well maintained and shaped. Some great plants and flowers to photograph. Enjoy a lovely stroll through this picturesque park. Two tranquil fountain areas to take the weight off your legs.. Well worth visiting the park top to bottom and left to right.

This park is not so small, and it has everything you need for a peaceful break. There’s a skate park, where you can often see kids and teens practicing tricks.
If you’re more into relaxing, there are plenty of benches under the shade of large trees — perfect for enjoying the calm atmosphere and listening to the birds.
What really caught my attention here are the beautiful big trees. You can find them all over the city, but somehow in this park they feel especially charming. They create a special mood and make the whole place feel peaceful and inviting.
The paths are covered with soft sand-like gravel, making them very pleasant for walking or jogging.
Lush green grass and tall trees create plenty of shade, making this park a great place for a picnic or a quiet day outdoors.

Lush greens with lots of shade. Saw many cute dogs walking around. The chirping of birds was very soothing. I enjoyed there was an area for skaters, and lots of space for seating as well.

The park is clean and has playgrounds for kids, but it’s very small and built on a slope. I also feel like there won’t be much shade in the summer since there aren’t many trees. So it’s nice for a quick walk if you’re already nearby, but I wouldn’t make a special trip just for this park.

We love parque las mesas. Amazing view of Santa Cruz. Good picnic areas.
It’s nice to go in the afternoons during the week when the sunshine is still out and the park is empty. It’s busier on weekends but there’s still plenty of room.
Bring plenty of water though, the last time we were there there was no running water in the taps.
Marina Dunn★★★★★
Great spot for a picnic/gathering with friends with a wonderful views right outside of the city. The walk from the bus stop is not terrible, but would recommend driving if possible.
Nina P.★★★☆☆
This either used to be a beautiful park, or was planned as a beautiful park and got abandoned before completion of construction work. Either way, most paths are still walkable and at the end you can enjoy a beautiful view (north east). If you are closeby, I recommend you pay this place a visit. You can drive all the way up to the park and park your car nearby. It would, however, be a disappointment if you drove all the way from another part of the island just for this place, because of the current state of this park.

Plenty of free parking spaces and a large, spacious park. There’s a restaurant inside, and for €15 you get entry plus two sunbeds, which is a great deal. The water is unfortunately quite cold, but the place is clean and well-maintained, including the toilets. Overall, a nice spot to relax and spend a few hours.

A lovely and peaceful park in the center of Santa Cruz. We visited in the afternoon and really enjoyed the shaded paths, tropical plants, and calm atmosphere. The place is very clean and well maintained. There are lots of benches, beautiful fountains, and even a small café for a quick coffee.
What really stood out were the amazing public swimming pools nearby – very clean, spacious, and perfect for cooling off on a hot day. Great for both adults and kids. A perfect mix of nature and relaxation right in the city. Highly recommended if you’re spending time in Santa Cruz!
Simon De Klerk★★★★☆
Amazing big pools and lovely nature. We got here at 14.00 and there were still tickets and sun beds available! Cool lookout on the opera house and sea as well. A bit pricey, but reasonable.
Jack Jack★★★★★
Parque Marítimo César Manrique was one of the highlights of our trip to Tenerife and is absolutely worth visiting. The entire complex is beautifully designed, with stunning sea views, palm trees, plenty of space to relax, and several large saltwater pools that are kept very clean and well maintained. You can easily spend an entire day here swimming, sunbathing, reading, or simply enjoying the atmosphere.
The facilities are excellent, with plenty of sun loungers, clean changing areas, showers, and places nearby to grab food and drinks. Despite being a popular attraction, it never felt overly crowded because of how spacious the complex is. The setting right next to the ocean makes it even more special, especially on a sunny day.
A couple of things to note for first-time visitors. Parking can be a bit of a challenge during peak times, so be prepared to spend around 15 minutes plus driving around the car park waiting for a space to become available. Arriving earlier in the day would probably make this much easier.
Also, visitors from countries that are less used to European beach culture should be aware that the atmosphere here is very relaxed, and it isn’t uncommon to see some ladies sunbathing topless. It didn’t bother anyone and is simply part of the laid-back holiday environment.
Overall, this is a fantastic place to unwind and enjoy a day by the water. The combination of beautiful surroundings, excellent facilities, and relaxed atmosphere makes it a must-visit attraction in Santa Cruz. We would definitely return on our next trip to Tenerife and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing and enjoyable day out.

The Palmetum in Santa Cruz is a fantastic botanical garden and well worth a visit. It's the perfect place for a relaxing walk, and you can easily spend a few hours exploring the grounds.
The ticket price is very reasonable at €6 per person, and parking is free. The gardens are beautifully maintained, with an impressive variety of plants from around the world. The different sections are organised into themed zones, making it interesting to explore and learn about the various species.
The paths are well maintained, and everything is clearly cared for to a high standard. Along the way, there are several lovely terraces offering beautiful views, making it a great spot for photos or simply taking in the scenery.
There is also a small kiosk where you can grab a drink or a snack, which is a nice addition if you're spending a few hours there.
Overall, a peaceful, well-kept, and fascinating botanical garden that offers excellent value for money. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Santa Cruz.
Zala★★★★★
I definitely recommend visiting the botanical garden; it was a surprisingly pleasant experience. Although finding parking nearby is practically impossible, I suggest parking in the garage beneath the auditorium. It isn't too expensive, and your car will stay cool. I definitely recommend visiting in the morning. While there is plenty of shade in the garden, I wouldn't visit during the peak heat of the day. The park is beautiful and well-maintained; practically all the plants are labeled and carefully tended. It is fascinating to see so many different plants from various parts of the world. I highly recommend a visit.
Ole Gray★★★★★
I really like this park. It’s full of unusual and exotic trees, and the section along the ocean is particularly scenic. There are several viewpoints and plenty of benches where you can sit and enjoy the view.
Palmetum sits on top of a hill, so the views from the lookout points are genuinely impressive. You get a great perspective over the city, the port and the ocean.
Entry isn’t free, but it’s reasonably priced. There are discounts for children, disabled visitors and Canary Islands residents. Roughly in the middle of the park, there’s a small, simple cafe selling drinks, ice cream and snacks. Nothing fancy, but perfectly adequate for a quick break.
Parking is easy. There’s a very large car park next to the park, or rather two large parking areas. Finding a space is rarely a problem.
The entire park is accessible. You can even hire a mobility scooter there. Toilets, including accessible toilets, are available both near the entrance and in the centre of the park.
The park is built on a hill, but it’s easy to get around in an electric wheelchair. On the way back, you can either head down the paths or take the lift instead.
Jo Foulke★★★★★
The Palmatum is well worth a visit and was €6 per person at the time of my visit.
I loved it; it's an oasis of tranquility next to a busy city and the fact that it is built on what was a rubbish dump makes it truly amazing.
There are palms from across the globe and it is split into zones. There are numerous viewpoints with benches to spend a reflective moment.
There is a catering trailer offering snacks, hot and cold drinks and ice-creams and the prices are reasonable.
Darren Roberts (DarrenRobertsMusic)★★★★★
I was here mainly for the endemic birds and less so for the plants. There was an incredible array of palm trees, my wife enjoyed these while I looked for the wildlife. We both had a fab time despite the 30c heat.

Sonja Macher★★★★★
This hike honestly felt like stepping into another world.
From the very first meters, the trail pulls you straight into a real enchanted forest — not the metaphorical kind, but the actual kind where your brain starts whispering: “Okay… elves could totally live here.”
You walk through a dense laurel forest of true laurel (Laurus nobilis) and tree heath (Erica arborea), growing wildly in all directions. The trees twist, cross each other, lean low over the path, and are wrapped in thick, velvety moss like something out of a fantasy novel.
And then the ferns — everywhere. They line the trail, frame it, soften it, and together with the constant humidity create this lush, breathing green tunnel. Because of the moisture, this is also a dream spot for mushroom lovers. If you enjoy spotting fungi, slow down — there’s so much to discover.
Some facts: it is a moderate circular hike of about 6.4 km, taking roughly 2.5 hours, with around 570 m of ascent and descent (don't underestimate it). A permit is required, which already tells you how special and protected this area is.
Now, a very honest heads-up:
The trade winds often push clouds straight through the forest. That means hiking inside mist, cool air, damp clothes, and a ground that can turn seriously muddy. It’s magical, yes — but also slippery.
White sneakers? Please don’t.
This is absolutely not the place for fashion footwear. Proper hiking or mountain boots with good grip are a must — and I’d recommend them without hesitation.
This hike isn’t about big open views or dramatic peaks (even though there are some spots). It’s about atmosphere, texture, sound, moisture, and stillness. It’s about feeling small in the best possible way, surrounded by one of the last remnants of Europe’s ancient laurel forests.
If you love forests that feel a little wild, a little mysterious, and deeply alive — this one will stay with you long after you leave.
Reuben Dooben★★★★★
I can see why the permit is necessary. It’s beautiful and isolating (in a good way). Went as a solo hiker in late November and a lot of wet tracks, be prepared for your shoes to get absolutely bogged during wet spells.
The route (TF-123) up is incredibly windy so prepare against motion sickness if that afflicts you. Also some sections are really narrow so having a smaller car really is a benefit.
Parking in the morning was easy but it does pick up in late morning/afternoon significantly.
Worth it.
Karola★★★★★
Amazing trail. A bit muddy. Takes approx 2.5h. Moderate difficulty level. Permit is required to access the trail - 600 EUR penalty
Romy Nieuweboer★★★★★
Absolutely stunning hike — the views are out of this world! You do need a permit, so be sure to plan ahead. The trail is doable if you're moderately fit; we completed it in about 2 hours and 45 minutes with a few short breaks.
Make sure to pack enough water and wear good hiking shoes — some sections are narrow and can get quite slippery. Overall, a beautiful and rewarding experience!
Joanna Nakonieczna★★★★★
Very nice forest trial. Although you need to reserve a permissin it is worth it, as it's lovely walk. Car park options are limited, but you can park a bit further away and walk to the start. Very easy to navigate, just follow the path.

During my visit to Tenerife, I found this place for playing sports. It's primarily a children's park with areas for children of different ages. But it also has running tracks.
Daniela Gil★★★★★
A large park where you can spend an afternoon stroll with your children or exercise. It has a basketball court, a soccer field, and other play equipment for younger children. It's quite spacious. What I missed was a covered area; I think it's impossible to take your little ones to play ball during the hottest hours of the day. Also, the park hasn't been open very long, and many things are already in poor condition. They should have some weekly maintenance to fix these issues and prevent the park from deteriorating.

A really nice, humid walk through the forest in the clouds. The whole area of Parque Rural de Anaga feels almost otherworldly — mist hanging between the trees, lush green vegetation everywhere, and constantly changing visibility as the clouds move through the mountains.
It’s a peaceful and refreshing experience, but also a bit surreal at times, like walking through a living, breathing cloud forest. The trails are well marked and there’s a great sense of being completely surrounded by nature.
Definitely one of those walks you don’t forget easily — calm, atmospheric, and very different from the coastal parts of Tenerife.
Sharon Sheady★★★★★
I joined a group with a guide who made it an excellent day out; a fairy tale tour through laurel forest on the edge of the rain forest.
I am glad I booked with a guide as I would have absolutely got lost on my own. Our hike was for 3.5 hours and it was stunning; beautiful walks and beautiful views. The weather was great and I wore a t- shirt and hiking pants which was perfect for the day in April. Definitly need good walking shoes and wet weather gear just in case.
Lucas Martin★★★★☆
Parque Rural de Anaga is an incredible place for hiking, with multiple well‑marked trails starting right from this area. The scenery is lush, green, and truly unique, making it one of the most beautiful parts of Tenerife.
The parking lot itself is quite small, but the number of visitors is high, especially during peak hours. It’s definitely worth arriving early to secure a spot and start your hike before the crowds. This area serves as the main starting point for several popular routes, so good timing makes a big difference.
A must‑visit for anyone who enjoys nature and hiking.

Gorgeous on a dry sunny day.
The mature gentleman at the Visitors Center was very helpful in helping us select the right trail.
He was also quite jovial and welcoming 🙂 and provided good ideas for other viewpoints and towns to visit in the park after our hike.
Be sure to get the trail map from him.
We hiked the Enigma trail (red markers), approximately 5km and about an hour to complete.
The rains the previous days had made the trail slippery in certain parts, but no issues if you’re paying attention.
The incline/stairs in parts can be steep but eminently doable at your pace.
Be sure to dress in layers as you can be cold at the beginning and then hot when you’re going up the steep incline/stairs.
Parking was already a zoo by 10am. Come early.
Tips for Enjoying Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s Outdoor Spaces
To make the most of your time in the city’s natural environments, it helps to know how the locals approach their time outside. The climate here is famously pleasant, but the sun can be intense, and the terrain varies significantly from paved promenades to rugged hillsides. Keeping a few practical tips in mind will ensure you stay comfortable, safe, and ready to explore everything these green spaces have to offer without missing a beat.
- Wear proper footwear: Even in urban parks like Parque García Sanabria, you will encounter cobblestones and slight inclines. If you venture toward the Anaga trails or the ravines, sturdy walking shoes or hiking sandals with good grip are essential to navigate the volcanic terrain safely.
- Carry water and sun protection: The Canarian sun is strong year-round, even when the breeze makes it feel cool. Always bring a reusable water bottle, apply high-SPF sunscreen, and wear a hat or sunglasses, particularly between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM when the UV index is highest.
- Plan around the shade: While many parks boast lush canopies, some open promenades offer little protection from the midday heat. Locals typically enjoy outdoor exercise in the early morning or late afternoon. Aim to visit open areas before 11:00 AM or after 5:00 PM for the most comfortable temperatures.
- Check local event calendars: The parks in Santa Cruz often host free cultural events, from Carnival rehearsals to jazz festivals and artisan markets. Checking the city council’s agenda or local noticeboards can turn a simple park visit into a vibrant cultural experience.
- Respect the biodiversity: Many plants in these parks are endemic to the Canary Islands and are part of delicate conservation efforts. Stay on marked paths, avoid picking flowers or disturbing wildlife, and always dispose of trash in the designated bins to help preserve the beauty of these spaces.
Exploring the parks of Santa Cruz de Tenerife offers a deeper understanding of the city’s soul. It is a destination where the man-made and the natural coexist harmoniously, providing endless opportunities for relaxation and discovery. Whether you are pausing to admire a dragon tree or watching the ferries glide out of the harbor from a shaded bench, these outdoor areas allow you to experience the capital at its most authentic and unhurried pace.
As you wander from the vibrant city center to the tranquil edges of the Anaga foothills, you will quickly realize that the outdoors are not just a backdrop here—they are a way of life. Taking the time to sit, breathe, and observe in these spaces will likely be one of the most memorable aspects of your visit to Tenerife.
