Nestled in the heart of Cádiz province, Jerez de la Frontera is a city that seduces the senses with the scent of sherry, the rhythm of flamenco, and the elegance of purebred Andalusian horses. While the city itself deserves days of exploration, its strategic location in western Andalusia makes it an exceptional base for discovering the region’s diverse landscapes and historic treasures. From rugged mountain ranges to sun-drenched Atlantic beaches, the area surrounding Jerez offers a remarkable variety of experiences within a short drive.
Many travelers use Jerez as a convenient hub due to its excellent road connections and proximity to both the coast and the interior. Whether you are a history buff eager to trace ancient civilizations or a nature lover seeking dramatic cliffs and pine forests, the options are nearly endless. The beauty of staying in Jerez is that you can enjoy its authentic, non-touristy evening ambiance after spending your day exploring the wider province.
Unlike the crowded resorts of the Costa del Sol, the destinations around Jerez retain a distinct, unspoiled Andalusian character. You can drive through rolling vineyards one moment and find yourself standing on a windswept beach the next. This geographical diversity allows for a truly varied itinerary, ensuring that no two days of your trip have to look the same.
For those who prefer to travel without a car, many of these excursions are accessible via the region’s reliable train and bus networks, though driving offers the most flexibility. The distances are generally short, often under an hour, allowing you to maximize your time experiencing the destination rather than sitting in transit. This makes spontaneous detours and leisurely lunches a central part of the adventure.
This guide focuses on the most rewarding escapes, balancing iconic must-sees with hidden gems that offer a deeper connection to the local culture. You will find everything from Roman ruins and whitewashed villages to wild coastal parks and bustling port cities. Each suggestion has been selected for its unique character and ease of access from Jerez.
As you plan your journey, remember that Andalusian life moves at a slower, more deliberate pace. Many shops close for siesta, and lunch is often a long, social affair. Embracing this rhythm will enrich your experience, allowing you to truly soak in the atmosphere of each unique stop along the way.
Here are the best day trips to take from Jerez de la Frontera.

There are travel advisors, and then there are those who create truly unforgettable experiences. Working with Ivan was an absolute pleasure from beginning to end.
Our multi-city journey was flawlessly planned, with every detail thoughtfully curated and perfectly executed. From beautiful accommodations to seamless transfers and exceptional recommendations, we never had to think about anything except enjoying the experience. We went with our two young children and everything was tailored perfectly to include our children while still allowing us to enjoy our own activities and truly see Portugal. We had an amazing cooking class, wine tastings (with juice tastings for the kids, and a phenomenal sailing trip...just to name a few). It was the definition of effortless luxury.
Thank you for creating a journey that exceeded every expectation. Ivan's professionalism, impeccable taste, and genuine kindness transformed a wonderful vacation into a collection of lifelong memories. We are so grateful for everything he did and cannot wait to plan our next adventure with him.
If you're looking for someone who delivers exceptional service, meticulous attention to detail, and a truly personalized luxury travel experience, we cannot recommend Ivan highly enough.

Amazing trip to Spain with Genuine Andalusia!
We recently returned from a 2 week trip to the Andalusia region of Spain in October and it was a fantastic trip and experience. Iván did an excellent job of arranging an itinerary that met our interests of seeing architectural and cultural highlights as well as experiencing great food, beverages, and getting to know locals.
This was our first trip to Spain and we absolutely loved it. The landscape is varied and beautiful, the architecture is amazing (Alhambra, Generalife, Alcazar and Seville Cathedral, Cordoba Mezquita), the history is complex and interesting, the food/wine/sherry is delicious, and the people are lovely.
We stayed in Granada, Ronda, Cadiz and Seville, with a final night in Madrid. We also had day trips to the Costa Tropical, the Genal Valley, Antequera, Grazalema, Jerez, Trebujena and Cordoba.
It was invaluable to have someone with local knowledge put together an itinerary that really highlights great local experiences. We would not have found or had access to many of these experiences on our own, and those interactions really enriched our trip. There were hidden gems throughout!
The local guides also greatly enhanced our experience, they were all very knowledgeable in their areas and they were also delightful people to spend time with. We had many good conversations with our guides, both on the itinerary subject of the day as well as general life experiences. It’s clear Iván focuses on selecting guides who are really interested in engaging with guests and sharing the experiences of their country.
And what a treat to have all of logistics taken care of, that helped us be able to just sink in and enjoy the experience. All of the hotels were spot on to what we were looking for and the drivers and their cars were professional, friendly and comfortable. It was also really nice to have restaurant recommendations for each location. We tried several and all were very good and offered a more local experience than the typical tourist area restaurant.
We also had the pleasure of being able to meet Iván in person and it is clear he has a passion for giving people a genuine experience of Spain and the local communities.
When (not if!) we go back to Spain, or Portugal, we will definitely work with Iván and Genuine Andalusia.

Curated to perfection!
Genuine Andalusia provided a perfect 2 week experiance for our group of 7. We worked with Ivan Ricoy who was most informative, enthusiastic and organized. He really listened and came up with a great itinerary for our group who were mainly interested in history, architecture, archaeology and art.
Starting in Madrid with a special before hours tour of the Prado with an amazing art historian guide (a huge hit), we did day tours of Toledo and Segovia then began our exploration of Andalusia with stays in Cordoba, Granada, Rhonda and Sevilla with a day trip to Cadiz. Each hotel was 4-5 star with very responsive staff. Many of the restaurants we enjoyed were family owned and frequented by locals.
We visited the towns, toured archeological sites, and learned about the history of the Iberian penninsula via it’s architecture, art and gastronomy. Every single guide was top notch as were our drivers. We were trying to decide if there was a favorite but decided we liked every guide and every site for different reasons and we wouldn’t have altered any part of this trip.
This group of friends have traveled together for several decades and have been to many places and been on many tours. Genuine Andalusia was one of the best experiences we have ever had and gave us a great appreciation of Spain and it’s beautiful, culturally varied people. If you can’t guess by the tone of this review, we rated it a 5++++ star experience!

We just finished a bespoke two-week trip through Andalusia arranged by Iván Ricoy of Genuine Andalusia, and it was truly outstanding! From the very first planning call, Iván took the time to understand how we like to travel and crafted an itinerary that fit us perfectly.
Our journey included Seville, Granada, Córdoba, Ronda, and Marbella, with each destination enriched by unique, local experiences. Even the travel days between cities became highlights, as Iván included visits to smaller Andalusian towns like Antequera, Baeza, Benalauría, and Setenil de las Bodegas—each with its own charm and story. We visited a local winery, toured an olive oil mill, enjoyed home-cooked meals with talented local chefs, and were guided by some of the warmest, most knowledgeable local people we’ve met anywhere.
Every guide and driver was exceptional—friendly, professional, and clearly proud of their region. When we needed to make last-minute changes, Iván was incredibly responsive and went out of his way to ensure everything went smoothly. One change of accommodation (booked on our own) near Ronda was not ideal and could have been stressful, but thanks to his help, it turned out perfectly.
This was a first-class travel experience from start to finish—personalized, authentic, and flawlessly executed. Several guides told us how much they enjoy working with Iván’s travelers because they were “always so happy with everything”—a sentiment we now completely understand. If he could arrange trips all over the world, we’d use Genuine Andalusia every time!

I booked a 12 day bespoke trip via Genuine Andalusia to Madrid, Seville, Ronda, Granada and Cordoba, and Ivan helped me plan a great itinerary which transitioned smoothly between places.
The drivers chosen were great, safe and professional. All the private guides were excellent, with very insightful knowledge about the places they were guiding. Ivan did a great job hand picking the guides most suitable for each place.
Ivan also was very responsive throughout the trip, and was quick to answer my multiple questions during the trip.
There was a discussion over Zoom with Ivan about our personal preferences, and the resulting itinerary was well arranged with visits to some special experiences that would normally be harder to access, for example, a private meal in a villagers house that was delicious with great hospitality. Hotels chosen was also comfortable 5 star boutique hotels with great value for money.
If you are looking to plan a bespoke trip for Spain, use this great company for a one stop convenience and excellent service.

We booked our honeymoon with them, and it was one of the best decisions we made. From the very beginning, Rocío made things easy for us, both with payments and the itinerary, which she perfectly tailored to the places we wanted to visit. She also gave us great advice on how to end our honeymoon. We have no doubt that if we plan another big trip, we'll book with them again.
Marta Pantoja Moreno★★★★★
We chose Zafiro Tours to organize our honeymoon trip, and it was a fantastic decision. Due to work commitments, we had to organize the trip in a hurry to fit it into our vacation dates. It was our first time traveling outside of Spain, and we decided to go for a cruise. Rocío organized the entire trip for us in no time. She advised us on which cruise lines to choose, both for the fleet (we chose MSC) and for the excursions. She selected a cabin for us in a great location (near the smoking area and the elevators) with a balcony, which we loved, as we didn't feel cramped at all and we enjoyed the views every morning. She recommended the fantastic MSC experience, which offered the best value for money. Rocío scheduled a meeting with us a few weeks beforehand to explain everything in detail, which was very helpful and reassuring since we were very inexperienced when it came to traveling. We felt very supported by the agency at all times. We highly recommend it and want to repeat the experience as soon as we can.

I 100% recommend this travel agency. We booked our trip to Punta Cana with Vero and it was a fantastic choice, at the best price and, above all, with the best service. Our experience with Kasai organizing our honeymoon to Sri Lanka and the Maldives was excellent. From the very first moment, Fernando greeted us and assisted us that summer afternoon when we went to request information. He attended to us impeccably, demonstrating great professionalism while advising us on all our questions. Fernando was always attentive to us throughout the entire process, and we especially want to highlight his involvement before and during the trip. During the trip, an unforeseen event arose with an excursion we had planned, which ultimately couldn't take place due to weather conditions. After speaking with Fernando, he found us a very similar alternative to what we had planned so we could continue enjoying our honeymoon.
Thanks to Kasai's attention, personal touch, and dedication, we were able to experience an unforgettable honeymoon with the peace of mind of knowing that we had someone on hand if anything happened during the trip. Without a doubt, we recommend Kasai and, in particular, Fernando for his excellent work and for making it possible for us to fulfill our dream of going to Sri Lanka and the Maldives for our honeymoon. We'll definitely travel with them again on our next trips!
Thank you so much for making this trip so special! ✈️🌴💕

Very pretty complex with lots of information in multiple languages. Super Quiet when we went. Both agreed we wouldnt say its worth the €5 pp however they honoured our student status for the €1.80 pp and that was definitely worth it. Super glad we got to see it. Would recommend if youre in Jerez for more than a day but potentially some other spots could be more value for money.
Andrew Long★★★★★
The Alcazar is a must visit destination in Jerez and unlike it's cousin in Seville - this was really quiet when we visited in early March. We went around on a guided tour and tickets were included. There is plenty to see although it doesn't have the wow factor of the Seville. There is a lovely mosque, fantastic gardens and a bath complex. There are also state rooms where clean toilets can be located. Certainly worth a visit if not to contrast with the Seville version.
Seimen Burum★★★★☆
Impressive Alcázar and one of the most important Almohad fortresses in Andalusia, dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. It was both a military stronghold and a seat of government and most of the current structure was built in the 11th and 12th century as a city within a city.
After the Reconquista of 1264 it became a Christian palace and military base.
When I visited the interiors were closed but the gardens with the remains of the Arab Baths were open.
The gardens were nice and there were interesting details in the buildings
Liam Sherlock★★★★★
Excellent place. Suggest you have a guide to describe the various locations. There is a camera obscura which provides a good guide to the city.
Marcel van Kampenhout★★★★☆
A beautiful fortress / palace from Moorish times and after taken over by the Christians. Unfortunately no Moorish decorations have remained. All walls are bare. Still it gives a good impression about the different buildings inside with texts in Spanish and English on boards and with more languages on the audioguide.

Ron Scozzafava★★★★☆
My son and I visited Bodega Tío Pepe as part of our day in Jerez, and overall, it was a solid experience.
The setting itself is quite impressive. The grounds are well maintained, and there is a real sense of history and scale. You can tell this is a well-established operation with a strong legacy in sherry production. Walking through the cellars is interesting, and the explanation of the aging process is clear and accessible, especially for those less familiar with sherry.
That said, the experience felt somewhat standardized. The tour runs efficiently, but also a bit mechanically, clearly designed to handle large volumes of visitors. There wasn’t much room for deeper discussion or exploration beyond the set narrative. For someone with a stronger interest in winemaking or fermentation, it may come across as somewhat surface-level.
The tasting at the end was pleasant. The sherries were decent, but overall felt rather average and didn’t stand out in any meaningful way. The presentation itself was basic and didn’t add much depth or context, and the tapas—just a plate of cold cuts and nuts.
In short, it’s worth a visit if you’re in Jerez and want a structured introduction to sherry making in a historic setting. Just don’t expect a highly personalized or particularly memorable tasting experience.
fiorella★★★★★
Our visit to Bodega Tio Pepe was an unforgettable experience! As soon as we stepped inside, we were enveloped by the rich aromas of aging wine and the sight of countless barrels lined up, each telling its own story. The sheer scale of the bodega was impressive, and it was fascinating to learn about the traditional process of sherry production.
Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, sharing insights about the history of Tio Pepe and the unique characteristics of their wines. Walking through the barrel room felt like stepping back in time, and we loved hearing about the craftsmanship that goes into each bottle.
The highlight of the tour was definitely the tasting session. Sampling the different sherries was a treat, and we appreciated how the guide explained the nuances of each variety. The pairing with local tapas was a delightful touch, enhancing the flavors and creating a perfect pairing experience.
Overall, our time at Bodega Tio Pepe was both educational and enjoyable. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it easy to relax and soak in the experience. I highly recommend this visit to anyone who enjoys wine or wants to learn more about sherry in a beautiful setting!
Máté Mónus★★☆☆☆
The overall experience was pleasant, but the wine tasting was awful. The workers left after we got our wines and didn’t say a single word. My 16 year old son didn’t get anything to drink and when we tried to get him something we couldn’t find anyone. The wines were barely drinkable and no water was included in the 35€ price. The tour was nice, but rather
a show about a vinery than an educational tour.
Rajesh Nair★★★★★
Very traditional bodega , good selection of sherries from very young to aged 30yrs. Excellent brandy. Lot of history , established 18th century. Informative tour and tastings
Thomas Lönngren★★★★★
Great tour around the premies of Bodega Tio Pepe and the González Byass Sherry house. Started with a train ride around the park and buildings and then a guided tour in a lot of the historical buildings of the wine yard. We ended with a Sherry tasting with some small tapas. I recommend the large package to experience it all, it was so interesting. In the end you passing thru the gift shops with the full sherry assortment and more. I would definitely come back if I’m visiting Jerez again.

This is a nice and clean little zoo with a decent assortment of animals. They seem to have a heavy concentration of different monkeys and birds, but they also have some larger mammals and some reptiles as well. The park is easily walkable and you could probably see everything in about an hour. It is very well shaded with lots of trees to help shade you as you walk around. There is a parking lot right next door that cost €1. The signs are not in English but that did not detract from us having a good time.

Nice place, many interesting animals, enough trees and shadow (now it's +37c). But not all animals have water (empty pools and drinking pools), many cells are too small.

I want to sincerely thank Nuripaz for making the unforgettable cruise we just finished possible. And especially Elena for being the fantastic organizer and guide of our cruise. It was admirable how she managed such a large group of 110 people with such calm and dedication, resolving every detail on the spot and always attentive to everything: turning off data, a note here, another there… and always with her characteristic “fantastic and wonderful.”
The only thing I regret a little is that, while we were enjoying so many parties and shows, she was working tirelessly to ensure everything went perfectly. Every night, she went from table to table to make sure there were no problems and to explain what we had to do the next day. That constant attention made all the difference.
Thanks to her dedication, the trip was unforgettable. Everyone came back thrilled and keeps sending me lovely messages thanking me for how well everything went. You must be very proud to have such professional and dedicated people like Elena working for you. People like her make any trip shine.
I have no doubt I'll travel with you again, because everything is guaranteed to be a success. ❤️❤️🥂🥂

This is, without a doubt, the worst travel agency I've ever encountered, and I've booked with my fair share of agencies. My experience with them felt like a complete rip-off.
They called me around March offering a deal of 30 nights for €290. I booked it, and initially, I could go to their office to make the reservations. I was able to do so a couple of times, but on the third visit, they told me I could no longer book there and that I had to do it by phone.
And that's where the problem started. I have the call logs and can prove it: for three or four days straight, I called more than 15 times a day and couldn't get through or get them to return my calls.
After spending the entire summer unable to enjoy even a single night of the hotel rooms I had already booked, I requested a complaint form. At that time, I spoke with someone who introduced herself as the manager, whom I had previously contacted. She told me that from then on, I could contact her directly via WhatsApp to make reservations, giving her advance notice.
Well, yesterday I tried to book for September, two or three weeks in advance, as instructed, and a new woman I didn't know answered. She told me she couldn't manage the reservation via WhatsApp and that I had to call the number again, which, as I've already explained, is practically impossible to get through to.
What infuriates me most is the difference in treatment. To offer you the promotion, they call you repeatedly. They also ask for contact information and, from what I've seen, they subsequently contact those people repeatedly to offer them the same deal.
However, once you've booked and paid for the nights, it seems you're the one who has to waste entire days trying to contact them to enjoy something you've already booked.
After months of trying to use my offer and only being able to enjoy three or four nights, my experience with this agency has been completely negative. I do not recommend booking with them, and I certainly wouldn't do so again.

We explored wonders like Chichen Itza, which left us breathless with its history and majesty. We sailed to Isla Mujeres, with its crystal-clear waters and Caribbean charm, and immersed ourselves in the natural magic of the cenotes, which seemed like something out of a dream.
Each day was filled with laughter, wonder, and shared moments that will remain in our hearts forever. It was a trip that strengthened our bond and gave us eternal memories.
The Riviera Maya stole our hearts, and with Visol Tour, everything is even better!

We had a relaxing evening in a small bodega just outside Jerez. It felt like enjoying some delicious sherries with friends while having a nice chat. Andreas shared lots of informative details about winemaking and sherrie production. It was definitely nothing like the mass events at the big bodegas, and I highly recommend this "discovery" to everyone!

Andreas was a fantastic guide who made the tour truly special. He provided just the right amount of information and explained everything brilliantly! The selected sherries also gave a great insight into the diversity of this exceptional wine – I highly recommend this tour to everyone! It was a real pleasure listening to Andreas and exploring the world of sherry with him! The bodega we chose was perfect too!

A very engaging and enjoyable tour.
Andreas' knowledge and expertise made the sherry truly appealing. We also learned valuable information about Jerez, the region, and its people.
Guided tour in German, small group (there were only two of us), highly recommended.

One of the best guided tours we've ever taken! Andreas is friendly, calm, and pleasant, and possesses comprehensive, solid expertise in both the history of the region and current events in Jerez. Andreas speaks without unnecessary self-promotion, explains exactly what you want to know, and even offers tips for other things to do in Jerez upon request.
Practical Tips for Your Day Trips from Jerez
To make the most of your excursions, a little preparation goes a long way. The following advice is designed to help you navigate the region efficiently, stay comfortable in the Andalusian climate, and experience the local culture with the respect and ease it deserves. Whether you are driving or using public transport, these insights will help you avoid common pitfalls and enhance your overall travel experience.
Start early to beat the heat and the crowds. The Andalusian sun can be intense, especially between June and September. Leaving Jerez by 9:00 AM allows you to explore outdoor sites like Roman ruins or coastal trails during the cooler morning hours, leaving the peak heat for a leisurely lunch or the drive back.
Book tickets in advance for popular attractions. While spontaneity is wonderful, certain sites such as the bodegas in Sanlúcar or specific cultural monuments can fill up quickly, particularly on weekends and during local festivals. A quick online reservation ensures you won’t miss out on a key experience.
Pack for microclimates. Even if it is sweltering in Jerez, coastal towns like Cádiz or Tarifa can be significantly windier and cooler, especially in the afternoon. Always bring a light layer, such as a windbreaker or pashmina, and carry sunscreen regardless of the cloud cover, as the UV index is high year-round.
Carry cash for smaller villages and tapas bars. While credit cards are widely accepted in larger cities, many of the charming ventas (roadside restaurants) and shops in the white villages or rural areas operate primarily on cash. Having €20–€50 in small bills will save you from searching for an ATM in a tiny mountain town.
Respect the siesta schedule. Plan your day around the local rhythm. Most shops and some churches will close from roughly 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Use this time to enjoy a long, multi-course lunch, as the locals do, before continuing your sightseeing in the late afternoon when the light is beautiful and the streets come alive again.
Exploring the region around Jerez de la Frontera reveals the true soul of Andalusia, far removed from the high-rise hotels and crowded promenades of mass tourism. Each town and natural park has its own distinct identity, shaped by centuries of history and the raw beauty of the landscape. Returning to Jerez in the evening, you can unwind with a glass of amontillado and reflect on a day spent wandering through ancient streets or breathing in the salty Atlantic air.
Whether you choose to spend your days chasing the horizon along the coast or delving into the mountainous interior, the memories made here will linger long after you return home. The key is to travel slowly, remain open to the unexpected, and allow the warmth of the Andalusian people and their land to guide your journey.
