12 Best Beaches and Coastal Walks in San Sebastián

San Sebastián is a city that doesn’t just sit beside the sea, it lives and breathes it. Cradled by the Bay of Biscay, this Basque Country gem is framed by three distinct urban beaches and a rugged coastline that stretches out toward the horizon. Whether you’re drawn by the soft crunch of golden sand or the dramatic cliffs that disappear into the Atlantic, the city offers a rare balance of cosmopolitan energy and raw, untamed nature.

Unlike many coastal destinations where the shoreline feels separate from daily life, San Sebastián’s beaches are woven directly into its urban fabric. You can step from a Michelin-starred restaurant straight onto the sand within minutes. The coastal promenades connect neighbourhoods, fishing harbours, and wild headlands, making it easy to explore the shoreline on foot without ever needing a car.

For locals, the coast is both a playground and a sanctuary. Surfers paddle out at dawn before work, families gather for afternoon swims, and older residents walk the same seafront paths they have known since childhood. This deep, everyday connection to the ocean gives San Sebastián an authenticity that feels increasingly rare in Europe’s more polished resort towns.

The geography here is remarkably varied for such a compact city. To the east, the beaches face the open swell of the Atlantic, creating powerful surf and wide tidal shifts. To the west, the shoreline softens into sheltered coves where the water turns glassy and calm. Between them, Mount Urgull and Mount Igueldo rise like green sentinels, offering panoramic views that stretch from France to the cliffs of the Basque coast.

Walking is the best way to understand this landscape. The city’s coastal paths range from flat, accessible promenades to steep, rocky trails that climb over headlands and dip into hidden inlets. Each route reveals a different character, from the lively energy of La Concha to the wild solitude of the cliffs beyond the city limits.

This guide brings together the finest beaches and coastal walks in and around San Sebastián. You’ll find practical details on access, difficulty, and what makes each spot unique, along with insider advice on how to experience the coast like a local rather than a passing visitor.

Whether you have a single afternoon or an entire week, these twelve coastal destinations will show you why San Sebastián is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful seaside cities.

It's a beautiful beach at any time of day. We love to go in the morning before it gets too busy and when there is plenty of shade. The City Council keeps the beach immaculately clean and there are good toilet and feet washing facilities. The water is lovely and the platforms some way out where swimmers can rest are a lovely touch. The beach's strong reputation is well deserved!

La Concha Beach in San Sebastián is honestly one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. I have traveled to many places before, but this one feels truly different in a special way. The first thing that caught my attention was how clean everything is. The sand is soft and smooth, and the water looks like crystal, so clear and calm that you just want to stay there forever. There is something about the atmosphere that gives you positive energy. Maybe it’s the combination of the sea, the mountains around it, and the peaceful vibe. It makes you feel relaxed and happy at the same time. Even just walking along the beach feels like a nice escape from everything. One of my favorite things was watching the people who draw on the sand. They are incredibly talented and creative. Their art is so detailed and beautiful, and it really brings joy to everyone around. You can see people stopping, smiling, taking pictures, and just enjoying the moment. La Concha is not just a beach, it’s an experience. It has a unique charm that makes it stand out from other places. I would definitely love to go back again because it left such a strong and happy impression on me.

Hard not to love this fantastic beach, especially in the week. We came in mid June which is still a bit before high season & found that the beach was clean and spacious & well maintained. Excellent promenade, beautiful attention to detail on the railings all the way across the bay, lots of trash / recycling cans, changing and toilet facilities. Water is clean and perfect for swimming, in addition there are pontoons you can swim to with a slide on. We did find that during the weekend the beach got quite busy especially on the east side near old town with too many (crying) kids. Head to the other side if you're not about that life. Beds and umbrellas are available to rent. Be aware that the sea level changes A LOT with the high tide and the section west-of-middle to the rocky outcrop with the walkway will disappear completely under water so mind your stuff!

Gorgeous boardwalk by the sea. Very very picturesque🤩 Definitely worth a walk if you're in San Sebastiam

This is one of the most stunning beaches in Europe. You can walk around this massive cove in around an hour, and if you end up in the west, then take a funicular to the top of that mountain. The opportunities for just bobbing in the ocean are outstanding; I spent longer doing that here than in dozens of other places I've tried it. Golden sands, no gimmicky seafront nonsense, and a sense of pure class all round.

Beautiful mountain trails that are very safe and quite well marked. I followed Komoot as Google maps doesn’t have all the paths.

This hiking trail zig zags along the cost and features spectacular views of rocky coves, open waters and steep cliffs in the Bay of Biscay. My niece, wife and I did the 5.8-mile trek on a recent August day, accessing the trail in the hills above Donostia’s Gros neighborhood and making our way to the long inlet that separates the twin historic fishing and port towns of Pasai San Juan and Pasai San Pedro. It can be tricky finding Arbola Pasealekua, the narrow and steep street that takes you to the trailhead on the side of Mount Ulia. The best way is to put “Mount Ulia trailhead” in Google Maps—about a 20 minute walk from the Kursaal building on Zurriola Beach. As you climb up the street you will see old stone stairs. This long flight of stairs is the steepest section to climb if you are starting from Donostia. Follow the stairs to the trail, where you will see a sign post. Head toward Pasai San Pedro. This is near a fork in the trail. Stay to the left on the side closer to the coast. As we worked our way along the trail, we continuously marveled at the natural beauty: quiet rocky coastline, isolated coves and panoramic ocean views. We started around 11 a.m. and hiked at a casual pace, finishing in just under three hours. At times, the trail took us along a few steep stretches amid thick forests and fern-covered mountain sides. A portion of the trail comprises the Camino de Santiago, and we saw lots of hikers headed in the opposite direction of the famed pilgrimage route, speaking all kinds of languages. There are sign posts along the way as well as trees, their trunks marked with small white, green and red lines—the colors of the Basque flag. Follow these and you’ll be OK. Eventually you will end up on a bluff overlooking the large inlet that separates the two historic port towns. Then you’ll climb down a long flight of stairs that hug the mountainside and feature sweeping views of the water. We paid 1.20 E to have a small boat take us across the inlet to Pasai San Juan, which has more restaurants, and we enjoyed a great lunch on a plaza overlooking the water. Afterward, we rode the boat back to Pasai San Pedro, where we took advantage of the region’s good public transit network. We caught a Lurralde Bus back to Donostia. The fair was about 1.80 E. Make sure you have cash because this bus system, unlike the one in Donostia, does not take credit cards. We were back in our apartment in less than 45 minutes—totally stoked from this amazing adventure!

What a pleasant trail! Along the cliffs through the woods and enough of a climb to work up a sweat. Some great views of the cliffs and coast. Finished it off with at a bar near the start / finish down by the beach.
Sal FromCal★★★★★
This trail head is close to San Sebastian and there are several trails that can be taken from here. We took the white/red and found the trail to be well maintained and having some awesome views. The trail has a far amount of elevation but nothing too much and well worth the time and effort.

Beautiful park in San Sebastian. The surrounding it's amazing and there you can feel the vibe of the city. In spring and summer there are a lot of flowers, and the tulips are particularly beautiful. It's easy to get there. There is a carrusel for kids that it brought you to your childhood. Close to there, there is a touristic train and also the ferry to the island in front of the beach.

Walking from San Sebastián City Hall into Alderdi Eder Park feels like stepping into a garden by the sea. Bright, vivid flowers line the pathways, bringing life and color to the already beautiful coastal setting. It’s a different kind of charm—peaceful, elegant, and full of small details worth capturing.

If someone wants to experience the real nature then you must visit this place. There are ferries going everywhere hour to this place. There is a lot of flora and fauna to see as well as the light house at the top is a beauty in itself. The island is so quiet and it has a lot of spots for picnic as well as relaxing. I definitely recommend going here. THE best place in San sebastian.

It truly is maybe the best urban beach in Europe. The beach, the water, the view, the ambient, make this an excellent place to spend a relaxing time, enjoying mostly the clear relaxing ocean.

This is one of the most popular beach destinations in the northern Spain Basque country. Located in the city of San Sebastian. Amazing location. Loved the color of the blue sea. Usually crowded with both local and foreign tourist coming for sun bathing. Great location to chill.

Easily one of the best beaches in Europe. It offers some breathtaking view worth a visit. The beach is always happening at whichever time you may visit. Lots and lots of cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants located across the coast. The vibe here is crazy. This has to be a photographers heaven. The connectivity of public transport to the beach is excellent. You can see a couple of mountains at the back drop which makes it picture perfect. One must surely not miss visiting this beach.

One of the most beautiful urban beaches I’ve visited in Europe. La Concha Beach has an amazing combination of ocean views, elegant architecture, and a relaxing atmosphere. The promenade is perfect for walking, especially during sunset. The beach is very clean, peaceful, and well organized. A must-visit place in San Sebastián for both relaxing and photography.

Beautiful place to capture the entire city of sans Sebastien. If you are coming to visit the aquarium in San Sebastien, take few more steps up and go take some snaps on this this spacious and big terrasse. There is an elevator if you dot. Little thorny of a hike, but not many people there. I was the only one. One note, when accessing from the road, go down the path from the parking lot and veer right at the fork. I went the other way and it wasn't correct

To go down to the spot, go to eder leku hotela parking and the go down on the pathway staying on the right of the parking. It takes like 30 Min to get down but down it's cool

It's a bit tricky to get there because there are no signs indicating the way, and Google Maps literally tells you to jump off the cliff. Anyway, you have to go to a parking lot, and next to it there's a path. Then you'll come to two paths; take the right one, all the way down. It's about a 20-minute walk. It's definitely worth the trip.
Rafa A★★★★★
I drove down in the mid-80s. In 1992, I went by motorbike. Today, I only go on foot, not even by bike. I think there's an unfenced vertical air vent on the path down; perhaps it's a hole in the tunnel.

It was really bad, to be honest. The girl couldn't care less, and for a cortado on the terrace, it was €180, when you go to the bar and they charge you €1.30 for a coffee. I guess I'll just pay for it myself. On top of that, the woman doesn't even acknowledge you. It's a disgrace.

Beautiful beach on the coast of San Sebastian. At that time, my colleagues and I were visiting and there was a business trip in Bilbao for a few days at the end of 2022. This beach meets the river and sea water in one corner.. so amazing when the waves hit the pier and some enter the river channel. The white sand is very wide stretching along the beach. It was quite cold at that time because of the strong winds approaching Christmas, but it is highly recommended to visit. Recommended places to visit in San Sebastian. Warm greetings from Indonesia, TH

It's a great hike up around the hill to see both San Sebastian and the Atlantic Ocean! Most of the hike is pretty gradual, although there are a few steep spots. There are stairs at various points on the upper trails. The views though are great. At the Bateria de las Damas, you get a gorgeous view of San Sebastian and the beach, while on the Atlantic side, you get fantastic views of the waves crashing against the unique rock formations.

The famous clocks on La Concha Promenade in San Sebastián are one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Located in the central area of the promenade, these classic and elegant clocks not only serve as timekeeping instruments but have also become a symbol of the city's sophistication and history, an unmissable point of reference for both locals and visitors.

The La Concha Clocks are a symbol of this famous beach; they are a clock and a barometer manufactured by the Swiss company Patek Philippe, adding a lot of elegance to this already beautiful promenade.

Tips for Enjoying San Sebastián’s Beaches and Coastal Walks

A little local knowledge goes a long way when exploring this stretch of the Basque coastline. The Atlantic weather can change quickly, the tides reshape the beaches daily, and certain paths are far more enjoyable at specific times of day. The following tips will help you plan your coastal adventures with confidence and avoid the common mistakes that visitors often make.

1. Check the Tide Times Before Setting Out

The Atlantic tides in San Sebastián are powerful and can transform the coastline within hours. Some beaches shrink dramatically at high tide, while certain coastal paths become impassable or dangerous when the water rises. Always consult a local tide chart before walking to remote coves or exploring rock pools, and plan longer coastal hikes around low tide when possible.

2. Pack Layers Even on Sunny Days

San Sebastián’s coastal microclimate is notoriously unpredictable. A warm, sunny morning can turn cool and misty by late afternoon, especially on exposed headlands and clifftop paths. Bring a lightweight windproof jacket and an extra layer, even in summer. The sea breeze can feel surprisingly cold once you leave the sheltered bay.

3. Wear Proper Footwear for Cliff Walks

While the urban promenades are fine in sandals or casual shoes, the rougher coastal trails require sturdier footwear. Paths around Mount Urgull, Mount Igueldo, and the wilder western cliffs involve uneven stone steps, loose gravel, and occasionally muddy sections. Trail runners or comfortable walking shoes with good grip will make a significant difference to your comfort and safety.

4. Swim at Guarded Beaches During Summer Months

From June through September, the main urban beaches have lifeguards on duty and clearly marked swimming zones. Outside these months, the sea can be rougher and the water temperature drops sharply. If you’re not an experienced open-water swimmer, stick to the supervised areas and always respect the flag system, which indicates water conditions at a glance.

5. Start Early to Beat the Crowds

San Sebastián’s most famous beaches, particularly La Concha and Zurriola, become extremely busy between 11am and 6pm in summer. Arrive before 9am to enjoy the soft morning light, secure a good spot on the sand, and experience the shoreline the way locals do. Early mornings are also the best time for photography, when the light is golden and the promenades are nearly empty.

6. Bring Water and Snacks for Longer Walks

While the city beaches have plenty of cafés and kiosks nearby, the more remote coastal paths offer limited facilities. If you’re planning to walk the full route from Ondarreta to the western cliffs or hike around Mount Urgull, carry water and a small snack. There are few places to buy supplies once you leave the central bay.

7. Respect the Natural Environment

The Basque coastline is a fragile ecosystem, and many of the cliffs and coves around San Sebastián are protected areas. Stay on marked paths, take all rubbish with you, and avoid disturbing the local birdlife that nests on the cliffs. The city’s beaches are cleaned daily, but the wilder stretches rely on visitors to leave no trace.

The beauty of San Sebastián’s coastline is that it rewards both the casual visitor and the dedicated explorer. You can spend a lazy afternoon on La Concha without walking more than a few hundred metres, or you can spend days tracing the cliffs, coves, and headlands that stretch in both directions from the city centre. Either way, the sea is always present, shaping the rhythm of the city and the lives of those who call it home.

Take your time, follow the paths less travelled, and let the Atlantic dictate the pace of your days. Whether you come for the surf, the swimming, or simply the pleasure of walking beside the ocean, San Sebastián’s coast will leave an impression that lingers long after you’ve left the shore.
