Tarifa feels different the moment you arrive. The light is sharper, the Atlantic wind carries a hint of salt and adventure, and the distant silhouette of Morocco shimmers on the horizon. It is a town of surfers, kiteboarders, old-town wanderers, and food lovers who know that this southernmost tip of Spain offers something special beyond its beaches. The restaurant scene here reflects that unique geography, blending Andalusian tradition with North African aromas and a refreshingly laid-back coastal attitude.
Eating well in Tarifa means understanding its rhythm. Mornings begin slowly with thick hot chocolate and churros, afternoons stretch into long lunches of tuna and chilled sherry, and evenings unfold on candlelit terraces where the sea breeze cools the air. Because the town attracts an international crowd, you will find everything from rustic tapas bars to refined fusion kitchens, but the best places always share one thing in common: a deep respect for local ingredients.
The star of the local pantry is undoubtedly the almadraba tuna. Caught using an ancient Phoenician method in the waters just off the coast, this prized bluefin tuna appears on menus in countless forms, from cured mojama to grilled tarantelo. Alongside it, you will find retinto beef from nearby pastures, fresh Atlantic fish, and vegetables grown in the sandy soils of the Cadiz coastline. Knowing what to order is half the pleasure of dining here.
Location matters in Tarifa, and the best tables often come with a view. Whether you are looking out over the port, the old town walls, or the endless stretch of Los Lances beach, the setting becomes part of the meal. That said, some of the most memorable dishes are served in tiny, unassuming spaces where the focus is entirely on the plate. A good rule is to follow the locals, especially at lunchtime when the menú del día offers exceptional value.
This guide is written for travelers who want to eat with confidence and avoid the tourist traps that can cluster near the main pedestrian streets. Every restaurant included here has been chosen for its consistency, quality of ingredients, and ability to deliver a genuine taste of Tarifa. You will find a mix of classic institutions and newer spots that are pushing the local food scene forward, but all of them reward a hungry visitor.
Before you set out, remember that Spanish dining hours are later than in many other countries. Lunch typically starts around 1:30 pm and dinner rarely begins before 8:30 pm, though Tarifa is more flexible than inland cities due to its tourism flow. Booking ahead is strongly recommended during summer weekends and the high season from June to September, when the town’s population swells dramatically.
With that in mind, prepare to eat slowly, share generously, and let the rhythm of the Strait of Gibraltar guide your appetite. Here is a curated selection of the best restaurants in Tarifa for every kind of craving, from fresh seafood to wood-fired meat and everything in between.

An excellent choice for a high quality meal! Food and atmosphere is just excellent. Serjio is a wonderful person that makes the whole experience 100 times better. We will be back for sure. The meal is worth every penny!
Edit:
If there would be 10 ✨ stars They would get it. Second visit was even better than first. Wine, dine and deserts - best in Tarifa for sure!

We had a great experience at El Guapo, great reception by Sergio and an overall feeling of hospitality from all of the staff. The food was great, fresh grilled vegetables, steak tartare, dry aged entrecote.
We’ll defenitely go back again when we hit on Tarifa next time!
Thanks Sergio, best regards, Miriam and Michel

We had an amazing experience at this restaurant in Tarifa, truly a hidden gem for beef lovers! The quality of the meat was exceptional, perfectly cooked, flavorful, and tender.
What made the evening even more special was the service. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, and even accommodated us with such warmth and attention. From start to finish, everything felt effortless and relaxed.
Highly recommend this place if you’re in Tarifa!

Simply Amazing! The food is fabulous. My personal recommendation are the vegetables with burrata and the iberian pork but everything I had was a celebration in my mouth. Spend here a couple of evenings for dinner. Sergio and Garo(?) made it feel like beeing at home.

This area of Tarifa is home to many bars, each with its own unique character. As you wander through the winding alleys, you’ll find people enjoying a wonderful petit “festival” of a night for themselves all around.
“El Lola” is located on the outer edge of this area, closer to the sea. Because of this?, it feels open and bright, yet at the same time has a calm atmosphere, and I thought to myself, “I’d like to have dinner at this bar tonight.”
However, it was Saturday night and nearly full. Still, there was a spot at the back of the counter, and they seated me there.
It was a prime spot where I could watch the drinks being made, pay the bill, and even see into the kitchen.
All the staff were cheerful, working nonstop with smiles on their faces. “What a fun bar this is, and what a delightful counter seat that puts me in a good mood,” I thought.
The restaurant seems to be good at seafood, but I ended up ordering mostly eggs and potatoes. On top of that, the tortilla was served whole, so there was no way I could finish it all (it was a top-quality tortilla cooked to perfection with a runny center). I felt terribly guilty—as a solo traveler, I ended up leaving about half of it uneaten.
Still, what a wonderful night it was.
Instead of heading straight back to the hostel, I strolled around the harbor and enjoyed the nearly full "blue moon" to the fullest.

Nice place in the old town. Can get busy and crowded. Even being German I liked that there were no international menus. This felt genuine and real. Food was very good, there are also some dishes, which are not mentioned on the menu. The service team was friendly and helped choose not too big sizes. The wine was good and the location is really beautiful. Would go there again to try the other rapas and dishes as well. Recommendation. We came early enough to still find a free table.
Martin Plavčak★★★★★
Very nice place with town atmosphere and great tapas and foods.
Only waiting time is very long so be prepared to go there put yourself on the list and go around until that time or enjoy some aperitif in places nearby.

The grilled dishes really stood out. The tuna fillet was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, and the grilled Iberian pork was absolutely outstanding.

Lola a must visit during your stay at Tarifa. It can be really busy, but its worth it. The atmosphere is fantastic. Service great! Good with kids. Food above standards. A good Rioja for 3 euro a glas, just perfect! Overal we enjoyed our last evening on the terrace. Take the tuna platter to share👌and the jamon croquetas👍

We had a great meal, especially with the tuna and octopus dishes, which were both delicious. The flavors were well balanced, and we really enjoyed the experience. The bar service was excellent, with a great selection of cocktails and mocktails. We'd definitely be happy to come back!

Really lovely restaurant with an amazing building and atmosphere. Our cocktails were great. Alejandro was really helpful with his food and wine recommendations, and Marta was lovely and very attentive.

My sister and I really enjoyed our evening here. We’d been in Spain for 2 weeks and this was our favourite evening so far. Guido made us incredible cocktails, and was so friendly when we spoke to him. I’d definitely recommend - especially if you can get there in time to enjoy the terrace!

The location is amazing, the wine list is more amazing. The food looks good in the pictures but in the plate is so and so. They use the same salsa for most plates, so most dishes tasted the same. The brioche with shrimps was amazing. The staff is nice but they don’t pay much attention to the tables. The bartender is pretty good.

Incredible 😳
I have lived in Spain (south of Alicante) for almost 10 years now, and then I will have to drive all the way to Tarifa to get the best meal (pr. €) and ditto personal service (anywhere!!! 🤩)
I am lost for words. I loved every minute of the nearly 2 hours I spent in this little cozy gem 🥰🤩
Irish charm, meets the best Morrocan flavours, meets the most southern tip of Spain ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Don't hesitate - just go there 👌🏼🥳✊🏼

What an awesome place. This is the best Moroccan food I've ever tasted, full of flavour and packed with quality ingredients. The service was outstanding, very friendly and extremely helpful. The place itself is great, a little bit on the small side but that seems to make it better. The price of the dishes are very reasonable for the area. I highly recommend this place.

Seriously excellent food! We are visiting from Dubai and were looking for Moroccon food and tried this spot. Very unique and great service too! Its also an art gallery, every month they do a new exposition with local artists from Tarifa which is a great idea!
Thank you for having us!

I’d give this place 10 out of 5! Super excellent experience after a walk in the windy Tarifa. Super tasty food and super nice owner. First, I want to go back to Tarifa. Second, I want to come eat at this place again. I’d say this place pretty much added to my experience of one day in Tarifa, which I really enjoyed. Hope I’m coming back in the future!

Hesitate no more. This place is everything that is right. Coziness, great service and delicious food. Whatever else you order, do not miss the degustación de tapas (sort of like a hummus variety plate) and the classic tagine, they are both great. Make sure to make a reservation given that the place is not very big and there is usually a waitlist. (No need to cross to Tanger for lunch if you magage to get a table here, top moroccan food!)

Absolutely outstanding! The flavors and creative combinations were incredible — every dish was perfectly balanced and full of surprises. One of the better steaks I’ve had, anywhere, simply because they prepared it simply and well. It was quality beef, properly seasoned, cooked over live fire. There’s not a lot of options - all the dishes come with fries and salad, but the fries are good and the salad is good. But the meat is transcendant. The wine is curated and good but very reasonable. In all seriousness, if you’re in Tarifa, go here. It’s a little on the spendy side (30€ for a ribeye steak) but well worth it.
Aleksandra M★★★★☆
It was good but as I had a lot of steaks , I wouldn’t say it’s for 5stars.
Rib eye was good quite soft and not too fat. Also little bit minus that it wasn’t medium but medium well done. But the place is nice not posh and I believe it’s the best meat in tarifa
David Coker★★★★★
The best steak we’ve had anywhere in Europe! The food was outstanding, and this is also where I was introduced to Tinto de Verano—a refreshing and delicious Spanish classic that quickly became a favorite.
A fantastic dining experience from start to finish. Highly recommended!

I’ve been to Tarifa more than once, and I always stop here to eat. There are many good cafés in Tarifa, but this one is simply perfect—the food is delicious and the portions are generous. It’s a great spot away from the city bustle; I recommend everyone visit and enjoy a tasty meal here 🙂
J Seeb★★★★★
It is hard to impress me with steak since I made steak on charcoal, gas grill, cast iron pan and pizza fire oven. But José ( chef ) did an outstanding job. He knows his cut and how long to keep it on the grill to be perfectly medium rare! What is also noteworthy that he asked the staff if the customer wants the steak to be more grilled he is happy to do so, nice chef who understands the customer and their wishes.
Food was very good, we had steak and pork secreto. Salad was nice and pastas fritas as most places do in Spain.
Service was very busy but pleasant despite the constant inflow of people. I like inside and outside but inside you get to watch the grilling in action which is very enjoyable.
See I don’t want to recommend this place because everyone wants to go and I won’t get a spot. It is a must do on your list!!!

We booked Santai after hearing people rave about the red tuna, and honestly it still exceeded expectations. Every single dish we ordered was incredible. The braised satay was packed with flavour, the Korean fried chicken was unreal, and the red tuna completely lived up to the recommendation. Even the bread with the curried butter was one of those little touches you keep thinking about afterwards.
We sat outside on the street tables and the whole atmosphere felt so romantic for me and my wife. Warm evening, amazing food, lovely buzz around Tarifa… one of those meals you don’t forget quickly.
The service was spot on from start to finish. Friendly, attentive and relaxed without ever feeling over the top.
Couldn’t recommend this restaurant enough if you’re visiting Tarifa. We’ll 100% be back.

What a fantastic culinary experience at Santai Tarifa!
We had the tuna steak and the beetroot tartare, both dishes were absolutely brilliant. The flavors were perfectly balanced and clearly prepared with great care and skill. A true treat for the taste buds.
The staff also deserves a compliment: friendly, helpful, and they spoke excellent English, which made the experience even more pleasant. The atmosphere was relaxed and stylish. exactly what you want for a gastronomic evening out. Highly recommended for anyone looking for refined food and top service in Tarifa. Hola! Walking around the city center we came upon this location and the chef saw us walking by and invited us in. We started with some semidulce wine and olives. The starter olives were delicious! We had menu questions and the chef came over and gave us information on everything we had questions on. He even recommended some cheeses that were not on the menu but he had received them. The service was top notch! They all worked as a team to make sure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere was great and the food was delicious! The only complaint was the empanada was a little too fishy for my taste but that’s a small thing and did not ruin the whole experience. The semi dry white wine was also delicious (for my wine drinkers!). Last thing, if you have to go to the restroom make sure you watch your first step going down! All in all it was a great experience and I would highly recommend La Candela!

We had the extraordinary pleasure of dining there.

The food, the wine, and, last but not least, the service. Everything is absolutely excellent.
I recommend it.

One of my favorite spots in Paris: La Candella!
The atmosphere is incredibly warm and welcoming, with a rustic Tarifa-style decor (wooden beams, cozy vibe) that makes you feel right at home.
The tapas are delicious — especially the croquetas and the tuna empanada — but the real highlight is the desserts, which are absolutely amazing and not to be missed!
Service is fast, friendly, and always with a smile. Great value for money, and a fantastic selection of spirits… that can go to your head pretty quickly 😄
You can really feel the soul of this place. I always come back with pleasure — highly recommended!

My wife and I had breakfast here as part of our stay. One of the best spreads we have seen in our numerous stays throughout Europe. Some items were even a first - a vegetable juice making machine and a fresh hazelnut spread dispenser 🤯. Everything is so beautifully laid out. A very wide selection for every choice. I may have had more choices in other locations, but the "artful" layout is very impressive. Thank you very much for such a great breakfast experience 😀🍽👍.

Really great place for dinner! We came with four people and had the shrimp croquettes (great), tuna tartare (super fresh), the oxtail cannelloni (delicious) and the caramelized salmon. The salmon was everyone’s favorite, even though some of the company aren’t the biggest salmon fans. So that’s a big compliment!!
Also for dessert, don’t hesitate and just take the apple tart. It’s one of the best we ever had.
Service kind as well.

We had a wonderful dining experience at Malcriado in Tarifa. The food was excellent—beautifully prepared and full of flavour. The restaurant has a cool, chic atmosphere, with tasteful décor that makes it feel both stylish and welcoming. Tucked away in a small alley, it’s one of those hidden gems that’s well worth seeking out. We also really appreciated that it’s dog-friendly, which made our visit even more enjoyable.
The only thing that could make the experience even better would be a warmer and more attentive approach from the staff. A simple greeting, a smile, or checking in before clearing the plates would add a more personal touch and match the high standard of the food and the setting.
Overall, a fantastic place that we would happily recommend to anyone visiting Tarifa.

The food was exquisite ! All the carefully chosen flavors made it an amazing dining experience. I can recommend the burrata with tomatoes, but especially the artichoke with truffle oil and almonds are worth a try. The service was very warm and welcoming, with the staff paying attention to detail. The bathroom was very clean. The restaurant is dog friendly and the dogs get fresh water.

Hidden Gem with Amazing Food and a Love for Dogs
This restaurant is a bit hidden, but absolutely worth finding! The food is incredibly delicious, with high-quality ingredients and a slightly higher price point – but well justified. What really stands out is the dog-friendly atmosphere: the walls are covered with charming dog photos, giving the place a warm and welcoming vibe. The staff is super friendly and attentive. Overall, it was a fantastic experience – highly recommended!

We ended up in Malcriado by coincidence and we discovered traditional Andalusian cuisine at its best! This restaurant is a hidden gem. Beautifully decorated, great atmosphere, great warm-welcoming host and the food nothing less than outstanding with a wine list containing all Andalusian wines. We were so amazed by the high quality, delicious and beautifully presented dishes, that went there both evenings we spent in Tarifa. A place you can’t miss if you appreciate fine dining in a relaxed and warm ambience.

The mixed tuna platter was an absolute dream – a must-try! Same goes for the black croquetas – insanely delicious.

Fantastic seafood and friendly service. Fresh fish and shellfish viewable in the counter prior to selecting your dish! We like to select a variety of dishes and share between us. Our server was more than happy to see our choices and ensure the right amount of food was chosen. Everything was freshly cooked and cooked to perfection!
A cappuccino like no other was the perfect finish to a wonderful meal and experience!

Fresh fresh fresh-
We have visited Tarifa twice and both times have dined at El Ancla! It is a cute homey restaurant right by the water (port of Tarifa). The service is unbeatable as the wait staff is extremely attentive and the owner is there to ensure everything is running smoothly. The seafood is absolutely fresh and feels as though it was JUST fished out of the ocean. I would definitely recommend making a reservation before visiting as it gets very busy, particularly during the summer (High season).
Insider Tips for Dining in Tarifa
The difference between a good meal and a great one in Tarifa often comes down to timing, ordering, and knowing where the locals go. These practical tips will help you navigate the town’s dining scene with confidence, avoid common mistakes, and discover the flavors that make this corner of Andalusia so distinctive.
-
Order almadraba tuna in season. The bluefin tuna season runs roughly from late April to early June, when the fish are caught using the traditional trap method off the coast. Outside this window, many restaurants still serve excellent frozen or preserved tuna, but the fresh almadraba cuts are a revelation. Ask for tarantelo, morrillo, or ventresca for the most prized parts.
-
Embrace the late lunch. The menú del día, offered at lunchtime on weekdays, is the best value in town. For a fixed price, you usually get a starter, main course, dessert, and a drink. It is how local workers eat, and it gives you a chance to try home-style cooking without the evening crowds.
-
Book ahead for sunset dinners. Restaurants with terraces overlooking the beach or the port fill up quickly around sunset, especially in summer. If you want a table with a view, call or message the restaurant a day or two in advance. The light fades fast, but the atmosphere lingers long after dark.
-
Try the local sherry and vermouth. Tarifa sits at the edge of the sherry triangle, and the region produces some of the finest fortified wines in the world. A chilled glass of manzanilla or amontillado pairs beautifully with fried fish and tuna. Local vermouth, served over ice with an orange slice, is the classic pre-lunch aperitif.
-
Don’t skip the Moroccan influence. Just fourteen kilometers across the water, North Africa has left a deep mark on Tarifa’s cuisine. Look for dishes with preserved lemon, cumin, couscous, and harissa. Several restaurants in the old town serve excellent Moroccan tagines and mint tea, offering a delicious reminder of the town’s cross-cultural identity.
-
Carry cash for smaller tapas bars. While most restaurants in Tarifa accept credit cards, some of the older, family-run tapas bars still operate on cash only. It is worth keeping a few euros in your pocket, especially if you plan to hop between places for a tapeo crawl through the old town.
-
Be flexible with the weather. Tarifa is famous for its wind, which can shift the dining mood from a breezy terrace lunch to a cozy indoor dinner in minutes. If the levante is blowing hard, choose a restaurant with protected indoor seating. Many places have retractable awnings and glass screens, but it is wise to check before committing to an outdoor table.
Tarifa rewards the curious eater. Walk the narrow streets of the old town without a rigid plan, peek into the small bodegas and family kitchens, and let the smell of grilling fish lead you. Some of the best meals here are not found on any list but discovered by accident on a quiet Tuesday afternoon when the wind drops and the town slows to a gentle pace.
Whether you are refueling after a long kiteboarding session, celebrating a sunset with friends, or simply exploring the culinary crossroads of Europe and Africa, Tarifa’s restaurants offer a genuine sense of place. Eat well, linger a little longer, and let the town’s flavors become part of your journey.
