15 Best Coffee Shops in Madrid

Madrid runs on a rhythm of long lunches, late evenings, and a deep cultural reverence for the café. Here, coffee is rarely an afterthought grabbed in a paper cup while rushing to the metro. Instead, it is a ritual of connection—a pause to read the newspaper, a debate with a neighbor, or a quiet moment of observation at a marble counter.

Navigating the city’s coffee scene means understanding its layers. You have the historic, wood-paneled institutions that have served café solo and churros for over a century, standing proudly alongside a new wave of specialty roasters obsessed with single-origin beans and precise pour-overs. Madrid does not force you to choose between tradition and innovation; it simply offers both with unpretentious confidence.

For the visitor, finding the right spot can be overwhelming. Tourist traps often serve burnt espresso at inflated prices, while some of the best brews hide on quiet residential corners or inside bustling neighborhood markets. To drink coffee like a local is to know where to stand, what to order, and when to go.

This guide curates the essential stops for anyone seeking quality, atmosphere, and authenticity. From the literary haunts of Huertas to the trendy, plant-filled spaces of Malasaña and the artistic energy of Lavapiés, we have mapped the venues that define the city’s caffeine culture.

You will find places steeped in history where the waiters wear crisp white jackets, as well as minimalist spaces where the baristas discuss tasting notes like sommeliers. Whether you crave a thick Spanish café con leche, a velvety flat white, or a rare Geisha pour-over, Madrid has a seat waiting for you.

We have considered not only the quality of the bean but the texture of the experience—the acoustics, the pastries, the light, and the crowd. These are the places that make you want to linger for a second cup.

Below is our curated selection of the fifteen best coffee shops currently operating in the Spanish capital.

Homely atmosphere and solid coffee. It seems to me that not much has been invested in the interior, they are in a nice location and in a beautiful building.
Jackson Gold★★★★★
Absolutely incredible service, I was welcomed very warmly and everything I ate and drank here was amazing. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner! 10/10.
Gustavo Garcia★★★★★
Amazing team running this coffee shop! Service is one of the best in the area. While it is a very touristy location, many of us that live around here frequent it for our daily coffee/breakfast. They have amazing food options and coffee. If the weather is nice you can also sit outside. They are very flexible and accommodating if you need to work a bit on your laptop and they are also dog friendly!

They clearly have preferred customers, and if you’re not a local, they make it obvious. I’m not reviewing the food, but the service. Our first visit was good, which is why we came back. It was busy, so we chose to wait for a table. We asked the staff if we could reserve a table once one became available, but we were told no and that we had to wait until a table was free. So we waited outside the restaurant for about half an hour. When a table finally became available, we sat down. The same staff member then came over and told us the table was actually reserved. He had been holding it for two women who arrived after us and were seated inside. Another table was about to become free, so I went to move there. At the moment I was sitting down and my partner had gone to the restroom, a woman from a nearby table came over and took a chair from our table. The staff did nothing about it, said nothing to her, and only apologized to us, telling us to wait another 20 minutes until something else became available. So after waiting for more than half an hour and seeing two tables become free, we still didn’t get to eat. I would have appreciated a better approach from the staff. If you say that tables cannot be reserved, you shouldn’t then ask me to leave a table I’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, a big disappointment.
Happy Dust★★★★★
A charming little spot in Madrid that offers a sweet escape for weary travelers. The Pistachio Espresso is their signature menu, and it’s the perfect treat to recharge your energy. I’m truly sad that I didn't get to visit more than once during my stay.

Cozy and aesthetically pleasing place. There’s no Wi-Fi or phone service, which can be inconvenient but it also encourages you to disconnect and actually connect with the people around you. The cheesecake was delicious, but the red velvet cake was the standout. we loved it so much that we ordered another one.

Lovely cafe. Very beautifully decorated. I ate a toast that was amazing. 10/10 Great vibes, calm and comfortable.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t satisfied with my experience here. When we arrived, the upstairs area was full, so they suggested we sit downstairs. We agreed, but the downstairs area had a very strong artificial air freshener smell, probably because of humidity or something nearby. The smell was overwhelming and honestly uncomfortable to breathe. The lighting downstairs was also extremely dim and unpleasant. Most of the chairs and sofas didn’t feel very stable or comfortable either. I actually had to change my chair because it felt loose and unsafe. The coffee arrived spilled into the saucer, and the sugar packet next to it was wet and unusable. The staff also didn’t really speak English, which made communication a bit difficult. On top of that, the cake I ordered arrived much later than the coffee, so by the time it came, my drink was already almost cold. That said, the cake itself and the nachos we ordered tasted good. But unfortunately, the coffee was not memorable at all, and overall the experience was disappointing.

amazing place! very cozy and picture perfect! we ordered brunch set menu and we loved it!

Ok Luz is a VIBE. Grandma core. Couches and mismatched furniture. Candle light energy. The cappuccino was funnnn. The toast was good. They only let you sit in the main area if you get food, but the food is good & cheap. The bar is also cute. I sat here and journaled 🙂

Your friendly coffee shop around the corner 🙂 The space is so limited so you need to early to get seat, coffee's and service is excellent. I went there 3 times (basically 3 nights in madrid) in a row and i felt like home. If you can able to pay cash you can get %6 discount on top of the bill or you can pay with your credit card. I mostly paid around 10-12 euro-ish depending my order. 1 americano coffee (with great cream) + meal. You can also order fresh cakes, croissants too. People who working in the coffee is so nice and talkative and good ambient music all day.
Laurel Johnston★★★★★
Lovely spot to stop for a latte and tomato toast. Very friendly atmosphere and they were kind when my spanish wasn’t great, haha. Around 9:30am on a Thursday I was able to sit and people-watch! Thank you. We came back twice!! Pretty small place so I recommend takeaway unless you are a party of 4 or less
Helena Fombella★★★★★
Top-tier spot in the neighborhood for a quick grab-and-go 🍵 Stopped by for a takeaway coco matcha and the execution was spot on: brilliant green hue, velvety microfoam with crisp latte art, and that balanced, clean sweetness without any gritty texture at the bottom. The space itself is cozy and well-equipped (solid La Marzocco setup on the counter, great selection of single-origin beans, and freshly baked pastries lined up) 🥐 Fast service, precise temperature, and zero fluff. Definitely a reliable daily stop if you care about beverage quality. 🍃
Łukasz Nie★★★★★
The staff were friendly, and the dishes served were very tasty. If you like good bread and coffee, this place is definitely worth checking out. I enjoyed the tomato awokado toast most! The name really charmed me as well — an extra plus for that!

We’re visiting from the US and this was a recommendation from a local. Coffee is delicious. We got the chicken sandwich to split and it was a perfect portion to hold us over for lunchtime. You have to order at the register/counter everyone is super friendly. They have an English menu which is helpful. After you order at the register/counter, you can sit anywhere and they bring the food over to you. Would highly recommend checking it out. Great vibe in here.
Donald Bell★★★★★
Tastiest cortado I’ve had in my life. Great balance. I could actually taste the brightness and acidity of the espresso. Friendly staff. Cool space to hang out in. Prices are a little high but totally worth it if you’re looking for a premium coffee experience.
Netanel Nesher★★★★★
Great coffee place for a quick coffee and a snack. Nice vibes and friendly people. The avocado toast was simple and very tasty. Good prices as well
Damian Górecki★★★★★
Our first breakfast in Madrid and it was a good choice. Both the bagel and the bread with egg were fresh and tasty. The portions aren't the biggest, but they're fine. The barista knows his coffee, was friendly and will definitely recommend good beans to anyone. Filter coffee is made using an xbloom machine, which is an interesting fact. They also have really good tea. It’s a popular place, but it’s a good one.
Oleg Shestakov★★★★★
Great place to stop for a specialty coffee near the palace. I really enjoyed the Geisha hand brew. It’s on the pricier side at around 9€, but the beans are worth it. It was ripe and full of juicy flavor. I loved it. I was too slow to take a picture of the flat white, but it was made to a high standard with great milk temperature and texture. I definitely recommend this place for coffee enthusiasts!

Lovely cafe with lovely personnel! Enjoyed a small breakfast and top of that a Patal de Nata. Which was actually good, since the person who makes them is from Porto! Coffee is great, not a lot of space and on busy days the visit could be up to 30 minutes top.

One of the best breakfasts in Madrid! Over a 5 day holiday I came here twice, and both times I was very pleased! The coffee is fantastic, service is fast and friendly, the atmosphere in the shop is great - and to top it off, the food is unbeatable! Great pastries, and delicious sandwiches! I’d recommend the Tostada Reina Pepiada - one of the best toasts I’ve had! A must visit for anyone looking for good breakfast in Madrid.
R H★★★★★
Lovely breakfast spot in Lavapies. The coffee was good too. The plaza is always lively, specially suring the street markets on the weekend.
Łukasz Nie★★★★★
The vibe of this place is truly outstanding. I really enjoyed it — it just resonates with me. The service was fine; nothing unpleasant happened during my visit. The serving time was short, and the prices for coffee and cake, considering it’s the capital city, are quite reasonable. I’m honestly surprised by the number of negative reviews. Coffe was a little bit sour for my taste but I enjoyed it. Overall, it feels soothing and cozy, a place where you naturally want to slow down and stay a little longer.
Pinar Oezalp★★★★★
Very cute café to enjoy different types of kambuchas, lattes, and delicious desserts. Cosy and nice.

The cortado and white chocolate pistachio cookie were perfect. Coffee was light and cookie not too sweet. The barista was also very friendly. Definitely check this place out if you’re in the neighborhood

i absolutely LOVE this place. the barista who is also the owner is the kindest person ever. i’ve been pursuing a cookie hunt in madrid for the past 3 months. i eat cookies literally everywhere i go to find the best one. this is definitely competing for #1 on the list!!! soooooo good that i literally take the train for 20 minutes just to go get it

My family and I are true coffee enthusiasts, and after trying countless coffee shops across Madrid, nothing has come close to the experience we had at Buna. Their coffee especially the V60 is simply exceptional, easily among the best we’ve ever tasted. We were so impressed that we even bought beans to take home with us. Their matcha is equally incredible smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced. It’s rare to find a place that excels in both coffee and matcha at this level. What truly elevates the experience, though, is Joul. His expertise and passion for coffee are immediately evident. He’s incredibly welcoming, highly knowledgeable, and takes the time to craft each cup with precision and care. I personally loved chatting with him while he prepared our drinks it added a unique, personal touch to the whole experience. If you’re a coffee lover or even a matcha fan searching for something special, this place is an absolute must-visit.
Max Klein★★★★★
Absolutely fantastic cafe! The coffee was great and amazingly they have the new Coconut ROA as well. Super friendly employees, Joel was super kind. Will be coming back!
Kaya★★★★★
Finally found a decent coffee place in Madrid, also serving delicious cookies that are soft but not overly crumbly! If you are into having lattes that taste like coffee more than milk, consider Buna! Do note this place supports takeouts only, there isn’t any place to sit. Perfect if you are on the go. The barista is pretty friendly too 🙂

Highly recommend this coffee shop! Delicious food, treats, coffee, smoothies, and so much more! We found ourselves here everyday of our trip! Something we could not miss before getting our day started! Everyone is so kind, with lively energy, lots of seating as well outside! I would recommend this place to everyone! Highlight of our trip!

It opens early, making it a great place for breakfast with coffee. 👍 One coffee per dessert was a must 😂, but it was so sweet and delicious. 😍 (I envy the atmosphere where dogs come into the cafe without any problem… All the dogs I met by chance at the cafe were well-trained, quiet, and cute. 😍)
Nikole Young★★★★★
The atmosphere is great for a relaxing coffee break. The Saobao was absolutely delicious—fluffy, flavorful, and a total highlight. The coffee was solid, complementing the food nicely. Highly recommend this charming spot for a tasty treat and a cozy vibe!

The Açaí bowls were absolutely delicious and tasted really fresh and bio. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Very good coffee and food. The atmosphere was welcoming and the service was friendly throughout our visit. Especially the toasts were absolutely delicious — perfectly prepared and full of flavor. Wonderful coffee at an affordable price! The taste of the cappuccino and flat white was smooth and delicate. Could not recommend this place more
srb howell★★★★★
Highly recommended. Excellent coffee and service. Small place, very basic, but cute touches. I bought, they ground, and I moka-potted the Elpidio - the result best Moka coffee I have ever had - by a huge margin.
Katie Oliver★★★★★
Lovely little cafe with quirky furniture and insane coffee. Iykyk. Prices are so reasonable I had to ask him if he was only charging me for one coffee. He confirmed it was two.
Christina Henline★★★★★
Super cute little hidden cafe! They made the perfect oat milk cappuccinos and the orange cake was delicious!
Pedro Carvalheiro★★★★★
We ordered a large Flat White Latte and a large Cappuccino, both were absolutely delicious. The place has a cozy local vibe: many customers seemed to know each other, walked in with their dogs, and chatted casually. A great spot for anyone looking for quality coffee. They also offer beans from Brazil, Nicaragua, and Uganda, which shows their care for variety and origin.

Found this adorable little coffee shop in the heart of Madrid. If you want no frills and just great coffee this is your jam. Atmosphere: 5 awesome vibe, lots of locals and friends just enjoying coffee and catching up. Food:5 best coffee we had in our two days in Madrid. Smooth and balanced, nothing pretentious. They also had some cakes and pastries. Service:5 friendly and fast.

Great little coffee spot in Madrid. Great selection of coffee choices including Flat White and some local variations like the “cortado” which is a single shot of coffee with the equivalent amount of milk. Pastries were great too. The shop has no seating outside and limited seating inside. As a bonus it has a very clean bathroom.
Colleen McGuigan★★★★★
Stayed inside and loved watching people come in and out and start their day. Had a mochaccino and a freshly baked pistachio croissant (worth the 5-minute wait). It was all delicious.
Eyad K★★★★★
This place was my go-to spot for morning coffee during my time in Madrid. They offer a delightful selection of beans, all freshly roasted. Their baked goods are equally impressive, with the pain au chocolat and cheesecake being must-tries. I always preferred the Colombian V60. The ambiance of the place is cozy and inviting, making it a great spot for work. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the barista is always ready to assist. قهوة مختصة عندهم أنواع بن جيدة، والمخبوزات عندهم لذيذة. جلسة رايقة
Kalifa-Afia Augustus★★★★★
I don't drink coffee and a lot of places with really good coffee usually sell just coffee. So it was really nice to be able to get a chai tea latte with oat milk, right in the heart of Madrid. On top of that, the girls were really friendly!

It is a very good coffee place. They focus on pistachios. We had also some snacks for breakfast: irak toast and avocado toast. It was delicious. The owner is very humble and communicates very well with people. Inside is small but enough to get a quick coffee with a friend.
Rania Elembaby★★★★★
Overall the experience is very good, thanks to to the service provided by the wonderful and dedicated owner himself. I really liked the pistachio latte along with the Iraq sandwhich and the avocado toast. The details inside the shop is thoughtful and the merchandise is a plus for making this place feel like your own personal nook.
Aimee Condon Nelligan★★★★★
Just wow. No words to explain how good the pistachio latte was, I got it with almond milk and will be thinking about it forever more. The owner is such a gentleman, and you can tell that he really loves what he does, so much effort and love goes into each cup. The pistachio Madeline was perfect too. He even gave us a complimentary lemon pie latte to try and that was also amazing. Best coffee we had in all of Madrid, we even got beans to bring home! Cannot recommend enough 🫶🏻
Camila Gutierrez★★★★★
Did I just spend 7€ on a coffee? Yes? Would I again? Hell yes. The owner made my coffee and carefully explained every variation they had as well as the details behind the presentation. Omg I had the Mesopotamia latte which was served on a cup purposefully selected to be the same color as the Ishtar Gate and came with a citrusy crumble WITH EDIBLE GLITTER THAT WAS MEANT TO SYMBOLIZE THE GOLD ONTOP OF THE GATE. I love.
Nino Dvali★★★★★
A must visit. Most delicious and excellent coffee and fantastic atmosphere. You would not want to miss this experience. We tried Pistachio latte and cappuccino lemon pie latte. Both were fantastic. Chatting with the owner, Naji, who is also the one serving the coffee is also its own experience.

The restaurant’s atmosphere is very nice. It’s clear that it’s really popular, as it was overcrowded. The lady put us on the waiting list for a table, but since the space is quite small, we had to wait outside, which wasn’t very pleasant because it was raining. After a few minutes, we were seated. There were three of us, and we sat at a small table that didn’t even have chairs to lean on. To place our order, we had to stand in line at the counter. The food was good, but we had to wait quite a while for it. They forgot my coffee, and I had to remind them. I understand that it can be challenging with so many people in the place. Overall, however, the restaurant is quite pleasant, and both the coffee and food are good.
Sasa Radenkovic★★★★★
Really cute little cafe located near Mercado San Ildefonso. The cafe was full so prepare for maybe 10ish minutes of waiting. The people working are super nice, they all speak english and are more than happy to help out with the menu. You also can scan the menu on the table. Espresso was really good, a bit sour, just the way I like it, and the spanish late was amazing acording to my wife. Fresh orange juice was sweet, you can really taste the fruit, it isnt a store bought juice. Service was fast, we waited for not more than 5 minutes for the drinks. There is also all say brunch but we just ate. People next to us had some bowls and sandwiches, they enyojed them for what I can tell.
Asta★★★★☆
Quite good experience at the first time, their cakes actually impressed me a lot. Second time still good but the third time bad. Compare to other experiences those cakes are big and fresh and I can say it is made in the morning not some days ago. My third experience was terrible, we order a strawberry cake and a matcha one which the strawberry taste not fresh and good, the crepes in the match one taste like from yesterday which is sort of wet and it was supper small compared to to the price it have. It taste like frozen cakes…. Terrible experience, hope it can keep the quality like my past experiences…☹️( first photo from today, second and third photos from last time) I can’t even wait until I back home to write this comment, I wrote at here!!!

A cozy and stylish spot with a great atmosphere! The coffee here is perfectly balanced — smooth, rich, and beautifully presented with latte art that shows real attention to detail. The waffle with fresh fruits was absolutely delicious — soft on the inside, slightly crispy on the outside, and topped with a generous variety of fresh fruits and maple syrup. I also tried their shakshuka, which was full of flavor and came with freshly toasted bread — a great choice for breakfast or brunch. The service was friendly and quick, and the overall vibe was calm and modern, making it an ideal place to relax or catch up with friends. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality coffee and a good breakfast in Madrid ☕🍓🥞

First stop for my friend and I after landing in Madrid: food was delicious and the staff were very kind. Don't think about it, just go ... you will be glad you did. I had the avocado toast with Iberico ham + Chai tea latte

Highlights: • Marshmallow Latte This is pure nostalgia in a cup. The espresso base is robust enough to cut through the sweetness, but the toasted marshmallow topping adds a campfire-side coziness that’s hard to beat. • Vanilla Latte You can taste the quality of the house-made vanilla bean—it’s aromatic rather than sugary, letting the floral notes of the coffee beans shine through. • Mousse Jasmin Lychee This was the absolute star of the show. If you prefer desserts that are light and sophisticated rather than heavy, this is the best to try!

I like the hand pour coffee. Peter took time to explain to us how to make a good coffee and sampled each cup to make sure it’s right. The environment is cozy & clean and the staffs are welcoming. The toast with avocado and nuts tastes really refreshing. Strongly recommend for coffee enthusiasts.

Best matcha in Madrid ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I visited Despacito specialty coffee and had a wonderful experience. I tried the matcha with coconut milk, which was delicious, along with a V60 coffee from Nicaragua that had a rich and balanced flavor. The pistachio croissant was fresh and tasty. Special thanks to the staff for their fast and friendly service. I’ll definitely come back again! 🇦🇪🇪🇸❤️

Finally got around to trying the new brunch menu at my usual coffee spot—Tetel was right about this one. Everything tasted super fresh, and the portions are just right - filling but not the kind that makes you feel heavy after. It’s the type of brunch you can enjoy and still feel good walking out. And of course, the coffee is still as good as ever, honestly one of the main reasons I keep coming back.

I love this place. I came to Madrid to visit two friends, and this was the very first stop after l landed. I ordered the cinnamon roll latte and it was genuinely incredible. The staff were beyond kind- Crystal even let me sample a new cookie flavour they were testing, and it was amazing. I ended up telling all my friends they had to come, and we tried a bunch of cookies... every single one was unreal. So many fun flavours, and everything tastes fresh and homemade. The treats are delicious, the drinks are consistently great (their matcha is especially amazing), but the people are what truly make this place special. I'll be back every time I'm in Madrid.

One of the best eggs Benedict I’ve had! Perfectly cooked poached eggs. The miso and sichuan oil were a great combination and can’t miss it. We also had the avocado toast with truffle sauce which was great as well. The açaí smoothie was fresh and refreshing too. We ended with an almond cake which was awesome, highly recommend this place!

Absolutely loved this place! The atmosphere was wonderful, warm and welcoming, and our waitress was absolutely lovely and made the whole experience even better. She was so friendly, attentive and kind. I had the bacon sandwich and it was absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful and perfectly prepared. I would definitely come back and highly recommend this place! ❤️

Thanks Jason for the brilliant service. The Cantonese style scrambled eggs were some of the best I’ve ever had and the ‘soft’ cortado as this cafe cutely calls it was perfection. Brazilian coffee beans brewed just right. Come a bit earlier in the day so you don’t need to wait in line. Interiors are also so charming.

Busy restaurant and there can be a line, but don’t stress and don’t let that deter you from waiting. The wait doesn’t take long! The service here is fantastic, quick and genuine. Very good food and coffee as well. We were very happy with this place and would came back! Thanks to server Cami for helping us have a good experience here

Beautiful place with a truly magical atmosphere. I absolutely loved the interior design, the vibe, and the overall feeling of the space. It is one of those places where you instantly feel relaxed and want to stay longer. The staff and service were also excellent, very friendly and attentive. We especially loved the matcha with coconut water. It was delicious and definitely something I would order again. As for the food, it was just okay. We tried the scrambled eggs with avocado and the eggs Benedict. The brunch dishes were decent, but not particularly memorable. Still, I would definitely come back for the atmosphere and would love to try some of the pastries or cakes next time.

This place is amazing! I tried both the Bolivian and the Indian espresso they had to offer and they were perfect shots. There was not a hint of bitterness and I was truly able to enjoy the notes of the coffee. I also had to try their cinnamon roll and it was baked perfectly. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed visiting with them and learning more about their coffee. They also roast their own coffee which is such an amazing thing. This place is a must visit for coffee lovers in Madrid!

Good coffee but skip the Turkish eggs, it was the worst I have eaten in the city. Not with poached or soft boiled egg, it was almost a raw egg, no salt or herbs, tasteless sauce. Couldn’t eat it

Really good coffee - was Jake not hot enough but am noticing this so common. In Madrid coffee is just not hot enough

Oh this is a wonderful find. Great people and good coffee. And cheaper, too! But don’t bring a computer to think you could work.

Honestly we are not sure what the hype is about churros and porras. The coffee was good. The service was good. The atmosphere good. The porras held the chocolate well. The churros were fine for dipping. Chocolate tasted good. The porras and churros by themselves were bland fried flour. This seemed like an Instagram/Youtube overhyped joint.

Tried this Churros with chocolate dip from this shop which is famous along the San Gines area of Madrid for our delectable treat. The place is clean and cosy. The churros are small and not much tasty as i use to think but the chocolate dip is delicious. The churros are overpriced but the satisfaction experience of being here is I think worthwhile.

This is a classic and must-visit stops in Madrid, that has been famous for offering churros and chocolate from 1894. It has a cozy and traditional vibe and is open till after midnight. The churros are made right in front of you and will be served warm. You can also order for takeout. The dipping chocolate sauce adds a nice touch to the tase and experience. There will lineups at times, but it moves fast.

Title: Top Service, Fair Prices, and a True Taste of Madrid A classic Madrid experience and I am glad I did it. The place is much larger than I expected, with both indoor and outdoor seating, and despite the crowds the service was top notch and very efficient. The churros were freshly made, light, and surprisingly not oily at all. The quality of the food was excellent and for such a famous place, I found the price very reasonable. That said, the thick Spanish chocolate was personally not my type of dessert, and I noticed many visitors leaving part of it behind, which tells me it may not be for everyone. But that is a matter of personal taste, not quality. Overall, the place delivered exactly what it promised and did it very well. Five stars.

Came here one year ago today with my girlfriend and our friend. First heard of this place through my girlfriend who first saw it from a Samantha Brown video when Samantha travelled to Spain. She did a wonderful job recommending this place. We got the churros and the hot chocolate. It was phenomenal and loved how the churros soaked up the hot chocolate and how the hot chocolate tasted too. Absolutely delicious! The service was helpful and friendly too. Recommend.

How to Order Coffee in Madrid Like a Local

Understanding the local lingo and etiquette will dramatically improve your experience in Madrid’s cafés. While specialty shops speak the global language of flat whites and V60s, traditional spots operate on a specific Spanish vocabulary. Knowing what to ask for, when to drink it, and how to pair it will help you blend in seamlessly and find the exact flavor profile you are craving.

1. Master the "Café con Leche" Ratio

In a traditional bar, café con leche is the standard morning drink, made with equal parts espresso and hot milk. If you prefer more coffee than milk, ask for a café con leche corto de leche. If you want it weaker, request it largo de leche or manchado.

2. Drink Your Coffee at the Bar

In many traditional spots, prices differ depending on where you consume your drink. A café at the bar (en barra) is often significantly cheaper than sitting at a table (en mesa). Standing is also the authentic way to enjoy a quick morning espresso alongside the locals.

3. Know the Difference Between "Tostado Natural" and "Tostado Torrefacto"

Spain has a historical tradition of roasting coffee with sugar (torrefacto), which yields a very dark, bitter bean. Modern specialty shops use tostado natural (no sugar). If you are sensitive to bitterness, look for signs advertising "100% Arábica" or "Tueste Natural."

4. Order a "Tostada con Tomate" with Your Morning Coffee

The quintessential Madrid breakfast is not a pastry but a toasted baguette rubbed with fresh garlic and tomato, drizzled with olive oil. Pairing this savory toast with a café con leche or a fresh orange juice is the perfect way to start a day of sightseeing.

5. Embrace the "Sobremesa" (No Rushing)

In Madrid, coffee is meant to be savored. Waiters will never bring you the check unless you explicitly ask for it ("la cuenta, por favor"). Do not feel guilty occupying a table for an hour after you finish your drink; lingering over conversation is a vital part of the culture.

6. Try the "Café Bombón" for a Sweet Treat

If you have a sweet tooth, order a café bombón. This indulgent drink layers espresso with sweetened condensed milk, creating a beautiful visual gradient and a rich, dessert-like flavor. It is popular in Valencia but widely available in Madrid’s traditional bars.

7. Look for "Café de Especialidad" for Third Wave Quality

If you want a modern, fruity espresso or a pour-over, search for the term "café de especialidad." These shops score their beans high on the SCA scale and focus on traceability, lighter roasts, and latte art. They are the best spots for iced coffee variations too.

Madrid’s coffee culture is a living, breathing entity that evolves with every generation. The beauty of the city is that you can start your morning in a 19th-century literary café, have a midday specialty espresso in a repurposed industrial space, and end your afternoon with a sweet bombón in a sun-drenched plaza. There is no single "right" way to drink coffee here, only the way that feels right for you in the moment.

As you explore these fifteen venues, allow yourself the luxury of slowing down. Watch the barista work, listen to the clatter of cups, and taste the difference that passion and tradition bring to a simple cup. In Madrid, coffee is more than just a stimulant—it is a way of life.
