12 Best Japanese Restaurants in Menton

Menton, the radiant “Pearl of France,” is celebrated for its lemons, pastel architecture, and a microclimate that feels more like the Italian Riviera than the Côte d’Azur. Yet beyond the citrus groves and the shimmering Mediterranean, this border town harbors a surprisingly dynamic culinary scene. While French bistros and Niçoise specialties dominate the promenades, a distinct wave of Japanese gastronomy has taken root.

For visitors who have spent the day exploring the Jean Cocteau Museum or wandering the old town’s staircases, the precision of Japanese cuisine offers a refreshing counterpoint to heavier Provençal fare. Menton’s proximity to Italy has influenced its palate, but the demand for fresh fish, rice, and umami-rich broths has led to a boom in authentic Asian dining. The result is a collection of establishments that range from intimate sushi counters to modern fusion kitchens.

Finding the perfect bowl of ramen or the freshest nigiri in a town known for its Socca and Barbajuan might seem like a challenge. However, the local restaurant scene has matured significantly, attracting chefs who respect both traditional Edomae techniques and the high-quality Mediterranean seafood available at the local markets. This convergence of French ingredients and Japanese precision creates a unique dining experience.

Whether you are a local looking for a reliable takeaway spot or a traveler seeking a refined sit-down meal with a sea view, there is a table for you. We have evaluated the menus, the freshness of the ingredients, and the consistency of the service to bring you a curated guide. We focused on places that offer genuine value and memorable flavors, not just trendy decor.

This guide aims to navigate the diverse options available, from the bustling pedestrian streets near the market to the quieter corners of the Garavan district. We have considered everything from the quality of the sushi rice to the depth of the broth in the soups. It is time to trade the lemon tart for a plate of expertly sliced sashimi.

Without further ado, here is our curated selection of the finest Japanese dining experiences Menton has to offer.

I really enjoy this sushi restaurant, it is the highest quality, delicious, fresh and most convenient here without going to Monaco I even like it more than most sushi restaurants in Monaco. It is very convenient with the online ordering and I like how he keeps it small with take away only. The space is cute, clean and modern, I can tell the owner really cares about high quality and presentable food.

One of the only sushi spots I could find. Worth the 40 minute walk from our hotel. They don’t do the flashy rolls with all the fried stuff and sauce, just really good sushi. Food came out quick and when the waitress brought me the wrong drink she left it and brought me the drink I ordered free of charge. The sashimi was top notch (the standard for a good spot). Great view of the ocean. I recommend the Me10 for a taste of everything (sashimi, Nigiri, and a roll) comes with cabbage salad, miso and rice, plenty of food and a great price. 5/5

Sushi was fresh, miso soup was bland, salad was delicious. Portions were extremely small considering the prices. Service was adequate, bordering on rude. We came to the restaurant at 9 pm, prepared to eat swiftly because closing time was 10 pm. Perhaps this was the reason for the quality of the service. However, we will not return, and cannot recommend this place.

the meat was not very good, sushi was ok, Gyozas were ok too, service was bad (they forgot our drinks and the wasabi and were not very welcoming). location is right on the main street, so nice views but cars and bikes passing near.

In a world full of pasta and pizza, it was very nice to stumble upon this restaurant in the old town of Menton. The food was excellent, the service was excellent and the place was excellent with a very good AC. It different from the main street establishments. Run by 2 brothers that are building the place from the ground. Give them a visit and their food a chance. I don't think you will regret it. Highly recomended.

Absolutely first class! There were three of us, and it was an incredible dining experience. The Korean tabletop BBQ concept is fantastic. For starters, we had the excellent homemade kimchi (Kimchi Maison) and pork gyozas. We also tried both signature broths – the mild Bouillon Soban (soy, garlic, and ginger) and the Bouillon Épicé with gochujang – and both were full of deep, rich flavors. For the main course, we grilled the Honey Sriracha Chicken, the classic Beef Bulgogi, and the shrimp. The meat was perfectly marinated, and grilling it ourselves added a great vibe to our evening. Highly recommend this place, we will definitely be coming back!

We had a very fresh and excellent meal. Nice atmosphere and very nice owner

It was nice to walk in being the very first guest to eat here as Thomas and Arthur just opened the restaurant. We enjoyed the Korean bbq with chicken and pork together with the noodles and fries. My son also loved the interactive way of self preparing your meal.

What a superb place! We were wandering around Menton, looking for a place to eat covering the various dietary requirements of our group of 5. We came across Kao Bistrothai and it was very busy. A small wait for our table and it was worth it. The staff were amazing and were very happy to look after us. If we're back in Menton again next year we will definitely reserve here

A lovely little find in Menton as a last minute decision to go out for a light meal. We were very lucky and got the last available unreserved table, so definitely need to reserve here. It’s very popular! The service was excellent and the food good. The sticky mango rice was delicious.

In Menton, make sure to visit the new Thai bistro called Kao. It’s run by a lovely couple, everything is welcoming and tasteful: a Thai style, pleasant details, and delicious cuisine. We ordered tom yum and tom kha—both were perfect. The owner personally looked after the guests. In the end, we were thrilled and recommend it to anyone who’s tired of the usual Mediterranean flavors of Menton and wants to try something different and tasty👌

Had a wonderful experience at Kao Bistrothai in Menton with my mother. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was warm, relaxing, and beautifully welcoming. The food was absolutely amazing — fresh, flavorful, and clearly prepared with great care. A special thank you to Paul, the owner, for creating such a lovely place, and to Mari for the outstanding service throughout the evening. Their kindness and attentiveness really made the experience memorable. If you’re looking for excellent Thai food, a fantastic atmosphere, and genuinely great hospitality in Menton, this place is definitely worth visiting. Highly recommended!!!!

Hidden Gem in Menton. The food is excellent and authentic Thai cuisine. Family owned and operated. Very nice French Jazz playing in the background with very natural/art deco flare. The owner is a Gentleman and very in tune with the clienteles needs. The servers are amazing and super friendly. Our server was the kindest and sweetest person we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She was truly a standout in our Cote D'Azur experience in Menton. This place was so amazing we had to go eat there twice in our short stay. Highly recommend!

Hands down, the best sushi I’ve ever had, eating sushi while watching the sun set.

The best sushi that we had in France! We live on the Nord, always with bad experiences with sushi there. It was in Menton that we found this very nice and friendly place, with one of the best sushi that we've eat! Thanks to the couple that owns the place for a great experience!
Ryan Jones★★★★★
Such good fresh sushi. So delicious and reasonably priced. Just be warned, they said they were open for lunch on Google but weren’t so had to go back for dinner
Lékai Ildikó★★★★★
Lovely small business with great sushi and even better service! I can’t recommend it enough!
Joel Basler★★★★★
The best sushi I‘ve probably ever had. You order and they make everything fresh, takes 20-30 minutes but it‘s totally worth the wait! They are both super friendly and forthcoming. I‘d recommend ordering takeaway and eating at the beach. We will definitely come back!

I am a regular customer at Planeta Sushi, and in my opinion, they serve the best sushi in Menton. The quality of the food is consistently high: the rice is always perfectly seasoned and textured, and the fish is incredibly fresh every single time. If you are looking for authentic taste and quality ingredients, this is the place to go. The only reason I’m not giving 5 stars is the attention to special requests. A couple of times I specifically asked to have the cucumber removed from my rolls, but it was still included. As a loyal guest, I’d love to see the kitchen pay a bit more attention to these small details! Despite that, the food is delicious and I keep coming back. Highly recommended for any sushi lover in the area!
Fulvio Ciccolo★★★★☆
Very nice location and a quiet place now in October. The food is nice. Ramen portions are very big. Degustation box 36 pcs is also a good choice.
Suzanne Goulet★☆☆☆☆
Horrible and disgusting. Nothing worse than looking forward to a sushi meal, and you end up with microscopic, tiny little pieces of old salmon enshrouded in dried out, old rice. Then, they put chicken instead of fish, in the sushi rolls! WHO DOES THAT?! This place is extremely cheap in what they give you while charging an outrageous amount. I went for a Too Good to Go surprise bag, and discovered the chicken in the 'sushi' roll. All of it had already gone bad. I had to throw the entire thing out. This place should be condemned. Horrible and disgusting.
Family account★★☆☆☆
Well service was good, staff good but shitty fish to rice ratio basically 1/10, they served me the salmon thing look at the picture, it doesnt even look like a salmon bro, chicken was fire tho
Luis Hurtado★☆☆☆☆
Absolute worst service. Avoid this place at all costs! We sat there for two full hours as the very first table and only got a single Coke. Nobody checked on us, and then they had the balls to say they "didn't take the order down properly." Total neglect, ridiculous excuses, and complete disrespect for customers' time.

Essential Tips for Choosing Your Japanese Meal in Menton

Navigating the culinary landscape of a border town requires a bit of local insight. While the restaurants listed above are all excellent choices, knowing how to order and what to expect can elevate your experience from good to unforgettable. Here are five expert tips to help you make the most of your Japanese dining experience in Menton.

1. Embrace the Local Catch

While Japan is famous for its tuna and salmon, Menton’s chefs often have access to stunning local Mediterranean fish. Don’t be afraid to ask if there is a "catch of the day" available as sashimi or in a special roll. Fish like sea bream (daurade) or red mullet (rouget) can offer a flavor profile you won’t find in a standard landlocked sushi bar.

2. Book Ahead for the Old Town

Menton’s Vieux Port and Old Town are notoriously busy during the summer months and during the Fête du Citron. The best Japanese restaurants often have limited seating because they prioritize the freshness and careful preparation of the food. A quick phone call or online reservation can save you a long wait on the cobblestones.

3. Look for the "Menu du Midi"

If you are dining on a budget or want a quick but high-quality lunch, seek out the set lunch menus. Many high-end Japanese restaurants in France offer a "Menu du Midi" or "Bento Box" option during the weekdays. This often provides the best value for money, allowing you to sample miso soup, rice, salad, and a main protein for a fraction of the dinner price.

4. Don’t Skip the House Specialties

While it is tempting to order a standard California roll, the true test of a chef is in their signature dishes. Look for items on the menu that are marked as "Chef’s Special" or unique to the region. This is often where you will find the fusion of French ingredients and Japanese technique, such as rolls featuring local citrus zest or ponzu made with Menton lemons.

5. Consider the Takeaway Culture

Menton is a town of promenades and beach days. Many of the best sushi spots offer excellent takeaway and delivery options. If the weather is beautiful, consider ordering a platter to enjoy on the beach or in the Biovès Gardens. It is a uniquely Mentonnais way to enjoy Japanese food, blending the local lifestyle with the cuisine.

The rise of Japanese cuisine in Menton is a testament to the town’s evolving identity as a culinary destination that respects tradition while welcoming global influences. The contrast between the baroque French architecture and the minimalist aesthetic of a perfect sushi plate creates a travel memory that lingers long after the meal is over.

As you plan your gastronomic journey through the Pearl of France, remember that the best meals are often found by wandering and following the scent of toasted sesame and grilled eel. Whether you choose a lively spot near the market or a quiet table overlooking the harbor, you are sure to find that the spirit of hospitality in Menton translates perfectly into the art of Japanese dining.
