Nestled on the southern bank of the Seine estuary where the river meets the English Channel, Honfleur is often described as the jewel of Normandy’s Côte Fleurie. Unlike many French port towns that rebuilt with modern concrete after the war, Honfleur miraculously escaped the devastation of 1944, preserving an architectural heritage that dates back centuries. This timeless quality has made it a magnet for artists, romantics, and travelers seeking an authentic slice of maritime France.
The town’s visual identity is defined by its narrow, slate-covered houses that crowd around the Vieux Bassin, a picturesque old harbor that has inspired painters like Claude Monet, Eugène Boudin, and Gustave Courbet. Walking through the cobblestone streets feels like stepping into a living Impressionist canvas, where the light dances off the water and the facades glow with warmth. It is a place where history is not just remembered but actively lived, with fishing boats still unloading their catch alongside chic galleries and crêperies.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Honfleur offers a profound sense of place rooted in maritime exploration and trade. It was from this very harbor that Samuel de Champlain set sail in 1608 to found the city of Quebec, linking the town forever to the history of New France. This spirit of adventure lingers in the salty air, inviting modern visitors to explore not just the land, but the stories of those who departed from its shores.
For the epicurean traveler, Honfleur is a gateway to the flavors of Normandy. The surrounding Pays d’Auge countryside provides a bounty of apples for cider and Calvados, while the nearby dairy farms produce the region’s famous creamy cheeses. Dining here is an experience that engages all the senses, from the briny freshness of oysters pulled from the estuary to the rich, caramelized notes of a traditional Tarte Tatin.
Because of its compact size, Honfleur is wonderfully walkable, allowing visitors to discover its charms at a leisurely pace. You can spend a morning exploring maritime history, an afternoon wandering through art galleries, and an evening watching the sunset paint the harbor in shades of pink and gold. The town’s intimate scale means that every turn reveals a new detail, whether it’s a centuries-old wooden door, a hidden garden, or a bustling market square.
Planning a visit requires understanding that Honfleur is not just a checklist of sights but an atmosphere to be absorbed. However, to help you navigate the very best this enchanting port has to offer, here are the essential experiences and landmarks you should not miss during your stay.

We took the voyager menu which was a 5 course meal at euro72 . The food quality was excellent- visually attractive , good ingredients and chef effort to enhance the taste of the dish. Quite a perfect meal. Ambience was fine but not outstanding - although it gets warm indoors as there is no air condition and the weather was warming up.

The Church of Saint Catherine in Honfleur is not just another historic monument – it feels like a story preserved in wood.
At first glance it surprises you immediately: instead of stone and cold Gothic austerity, the entire church is built from timber, almost like an inverted ship hull. You instantly understand that this is a port town – the structure was created by local shipbuilders, and you can truly sense their craftsmanship. The wooden vaults resemble the ribs of a boat turned upside-down, giving the interior a warm, human scale that is both unusual and deeply atmospheric.
Inside, the light is soft and calm. The aged wood absorbs sound, creating a peaceful silence very different from large cathedrals. There is a simplicity here, but also elegance – modest altars, maritime details, and a feeling of centuries of quiet life passing through the same space.
Right across from the church stands its separate bell tower, which makes the place even more distinctive. Built apart from the main building to protect the wooden structure from fire, the tower almost looks like a small watchtower guarding the square. This unusual arrangement adds character to the site and reminds you again that Honfleur has always lived between sea, trade, and danger.
Standing there, you don’t feel like a tourist in a monument, but rather a guest inside the history of Normandy itself. It is intimate, authentic and memorable – one of the most distinctive churches in France and absolutely worth visiting while in Honfleur.
Michael Mayer★★★★★
A must see in Honfleur. The largest wooden church in France dates from the 15th century. It was a marvel to walk around and experience its unique warm interior. We were lucky to hear the organ being played and its mellow tones enhanced the atmosphere further.
Tom Cronin★★★★★
Honfleur was a nice river cruise port with an unbelievably good bakery. Church was a nice visit.
Elizabeth Baker★★★★★
Beautiful church and one quite unique from what I have visited before as constructed from wood. However I have never seen so many candles in a church, so hopefully fire precautions are good considering it is made from wood! Very much worth visiting and no charge for doing so but donations appreciated.
Simon Drury★★★★★
Unique and all in wood.
Built by boat builders rather than masons.

Make sure you ask for the translation QR code when you buy your ticket - which you do on the train. Great way to see sights you won't on foot and to hear stories about Honfleur.

Be aware not bilingual, commentary is all in French, no headphones or other audio available. Having said that understood some of commentary and was already aware of history so some of it made sense but also missed alot. Would be useful to have link to commentary in other languages even via mobile phones to listen to. Enjoyed the trip especially trip to Notre Dame de Grace and views

A fantastic place with countless restaurants, cafes, and shops that sell not only tourist trinkets but also lovely, handmade, and decorative items. The harbor setting is picturesque and, unlike Le Havre (lots of concrete), definitely worth a visit. Tip: We took an Uber from the ship to Honfleur for €35 and then took bus 111 back to Le Havre for €3 per ticket.

We went on several times during our visit. My four year old loved it. On weekdays it was quiet enough they didn’t give out any tickets, on the weekend when it’s busier they gave out a token.
If you as the adult want to ride a horse, sit in a pumpkin etc. You have to specify this and buy a ticket. If you just want to stand next to your little one as they ride then you only have to pay for them.

There were 3 generations in our 6 strong family group. Grandma and Grandpa, Dad and Mum and 2 teenage grandsons aged 13 and 15. We were given the harder quests due to our ages. There were easier ones for younger children to follow. We all had lots of fun working out the answers which required using observational and numerical skills as well as memory skills. We thought it great value for money and an enjoyable way of spending the afternoon. We highly recommend Honfleur Labyrinth and would definitely visit again.
Chris Rees★★★★★
Amazing maze, best thing we did in Honfleur! This year was about King Arthur, it required completing two mazes with puzzles that had two levels of difficulty. We did the easier difficulty but was still challenging and a good sense of achievement. Our son 6 loved it as did we. There was also some games including kids archery for free and a more expensive escape room.
The only watch out is the toilet, which as it is in a cornfield isn't great, so go beforehand.
Brilliant fun for all the family, highly recommend.
Anna Glotova★★★★★
Great place for kids of all ages! Very well organized, a lot of interesting tasks, children do not just walk through the labyrinth, but must show attentiveness and detective skills😉🕵🏻♂️ There are also small cars for riding and an archery area. Very nice and helpful owner, let us in, despite the fact that we arrived too late. Thank you! Definitely recommend this place.

A lovely way to spend an hour or so. It’s not massive inside. We went round the path a couple of times to make the most of it. Our four year old loved it. Rewards really looking around as there are also birds inside that perch in one spot and are easy to miss!
Don’t miss the hatchery at the end with rows of chrysalis and emerging butterflies.
Forever Foodie★★★★☆
What a cute place to visit with small children! My toddler who just learned about butterflies at school was absolutely stoked to be here. It's not a super big place so 1 hour is enough to see everything but they do not specify a time limit and you can roam freely. It's a great idea for rainy weather but I recommend you wear layers that you can take off as it is quite hot and humid inside to create a suitable environment for the animals and plants.
It was nice to be surrounded by butterflies and birds flying around 🙂
Mrs A★★★★★
Loved it here. Great spot for children. Lots of birds and butterflies (and gift shop). Maybe a bit small, takes an hour or so to walk around if you take your time. My children loved it . About 10 euro per person
Mason Stoecker★★★★☆
A very cute Biosphere that we found mostly by walking around the small town. It contained signs in French and in English which made the exhibit more approachable. Very memerable moment actually was a small spider exhibit where they had them fighting different creatures and sometimes other spiders in a sort of kaiju performance
C M★★★★★
As a butterfly lover, I had to see it and was not disappointed. The enchanting creatures flutter by very close to you and you can admire them for as long as you like. The birds and plants are also quite wonderful. The sultriness inside is understandable, so better not dress too thickly.

A small garden, located between the historic streets. It was opened a few years ago, designed by local gardeners and artists. It is a beautifull and quiet spot, worth visiting. There is a small stream and interesting sculptures.

I was looking for this park as part of a Geocaching Adventure Lab. Finding the access was part of the adventure and then I was enthralled with the natural and man made features and sculptures. The water running through was magical. It looks like this has been here for centuries!

Such a great place to rest indeed! Far from the madding crowd of Honfleur, you will enjoy tranquility and visit many celebrities you may not have expected such as Baudelaire or Erik Satie, all connected to the place. Spring is the best to stroll in the garden, colourful and astonishing. Take your camera 📷 the light is amazing! You access the garden on foot, the most enjoyable route is to walk along the beach to the estuary. You'll see the ships go by... the seashore and the horizon melting into one... 😯

Practical Tips for Visiting Honfleur
To make the most of your time in this Norman gem, it helps to arrive with a bit of local knowledge. The following recommendations are designed to help you navigate the town like a seasoned traveler, avoid common pitfalls, and uncover the layers of charm that make Honfleur so special. From timing your visit to choosing where to eat, these practical insights will enhance your overall experience.
- Time your visit to avoid the midday rush. Honfleur is incredibly popular with day-trippers from Paris, and the streets around the Vieux Bassin can become congested between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Stay overnight if you can, or arrive early in the morning to see the harbor when the light is soft and the streets are quiet.
- Wear sturdy, comfortable footwear. The historic center is paved with uneven cobblestones that can be slippery when wet. Fashionable flats or heels are a recipe for twisted ankles; opt for sneakers or walking shoes with good grip to explore the old town safely and comfortably.
- Book restaurants in advance, especially for dinner. While Honfleur has a high density of eateries, the best tables fill up quickly, particularly on weekends and during the summer months. If you have your heart set on a specific waterfront terrace or a renowned seafood restaurant, make a reservation a day or two ahead.
- Explore beyond the Vieux Bassin. While the old harbor is undeniably beautiful, the magic of Honfleur often lies in its quieter backstreets. Wander up the narrow Rue des Lingots or explore the Sainte-Catherine district to find artisan workshops, local bakeries, and peaceful corners away from the main tourist flow.
- Use the dedicated parking lots on the edge of town. Driving into the historic center is heavily restricted and navigating the medieval lanes by car is stressful. Park in one of the clearly signposted lots, such as the Naturospace or Bassin de l’Est car parks, and walk into the heart of the town; it is only a few minutes on foot.
- Check the local tide times. Honfleur sits on an estuary, and the character of the waterfront changes dramatically with the tide. At low tide, the lock gates and muddy banks reveal a different aspect of the port’s working life. If you are interested in photography, high tide offers the classic postcard reflection shots, while low tide reveals the textures of the harbor floor.
Honfleur is a destination that rewards curiosity and patience. While its famous harbor may be the initial draw, it is the layered history, the artistic legacy, and the warmth of its residents that leave a lasting impression. Taking the time to sit on a bench with a cone of artisanal ice cream or a glass of local cider is just as important as visiting the monuments themselves.
Ultimately, a trip to Honfleur is an invitation to slow down and savor the moment. Whether you are tracing the footsteps of the Impressionists, indulging in the region’s culinary riches, or simply watching the boats bob in the harbor, this Norman treasure offers a timeless escape that lingers in the memory long after you have returned home.
