Finding a memorable meal in Arles means stepping into a city where Roman history and Provençal tradition share the same table. The ancient stones of this UNESCO-listed town are not just a backdrop; they are part of the dining atmosphere. From sun-drenched terraces near the Arena to hidden corners in the narrow medieval streets, the culinary scene is deeply connected to the surrounding Camargue region.
Dining in Arles is a celebration of the land. You will find menus shaped by the nearby rice paddies, salt marshes, and olive groves. The local beef, particularly the AOC Taureau de Camargue, and fresh Mediterranean seafood often take center stage, offering a true taste of the terroir.
While the city is famous for its Van Gogh heritage, the restaurant scene is equally artistic. Chefs here balance rustic Provençal cooking with modern French technique. Whether you are looking for a casual bistro lunch or an elegant candlelit dinner, the variety is impressive for a town of this size.
Knowing where to eat can save you from the tourist traps that often plague popular destinations. The best tables are often slightly off the main squares, where the focus is on the plate rather than the view. These are the places where locals linger over long lunches and where the service feels like hospitality rather than a transaction.
To help you navigate the culinary landscape, we have curated a list of the twelve best Italian restaurants in Arles. While you might expect only French cuisine, the proximity to the Italian border has influenced a wave of excellent pizzerias and trattorias that rival those in Rome or Naples. These spots offer a delicious alternative when you crave handmade pasta or wood-fired pizza.
Below, you will find a selection that balances authentic Italian cooking with the high standards of French dining. Each entry has been chosen for its consistency, quality of ingredients, and atmosphere, ensuring you have a reliable guide for your next meal in the city.

We ate at this restaurant after passing it on the way to the Colosseum. It was absolutely fantastic - I highly recommend the carbonara pinsa!! Simply delicious and the best carbonara I’ve ever had. Service was very friendly, food came relatively quickly, and we felt very welcome. You should definitely come to this restaurant if you’re ever in Arles! 🤩
Jessica R.★★★★★
We loved our experience at Colosseo. The server was kind and attentive. And we loved the food — so fresh and generous portions of pizza. And being right next to the amphitheater, the outdoor patio provides an excellent view!
Niall Carruthers★★★★★
After a couple of wrong turns, we ended up, almost accidentally at this restaurant. What a wonderful mistake! The amazing location is second best when it comes to the food and service. Our pizzas were truly some of the best we have eaten. A fantastic mix of crispy and doughy. All to do with their special flour blend apparently. The carbonara pinsa sounds like a terrible idea, but was DELICIOUS! The staff could not have been more helpful.
If in Arles and you’re a fan of pizza, go here. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
Julie Chien★★★★★
The food is amazing. We ordered 4 different pizza and a salad. Everything tasted SO GOOOOD.
The service is awesome and the owners are very friendly.
I will definitely come back again when I visit Arles again and tell my friends to come if they visit Arles!!!

We were coming back from Italy to Spain and we decided to stay in Arles for a night. I discovered this place for dinner, and it was espectacular. Better than the pizzas we had in Italy (and they were great!)

Delicious pasta and focaccia sandwiches! Great spot away from the touristy plaza. Friendly service. Loved the pistachio tiramisu. Would come back to try all the pastas!

Gnocchi was mealy/crumbly. Service was terrible - never got water, never got wine refill. Credit card reader didn’t work.

Not only is the food amazing, the service was outstanding! We were treated like locals, except for the fact we barely spoke French. They spoke excellent English and perfectly described the menu of the day. I had the ravioli with pistachio pesto, and was blown away with the perfectly cooked pasta and the sauce was so fresh!! We got to chat with the chef as well and let them know we could taste the love in every bite. The lemon tiramisu was the perfect way to end the meal. You will not be disappointed with anything on their menu. Thank you, Bigoli for a great experience. 😊

Wonderful pizza, we came in last minute but we were still served with great service. Very relaxed environment and the waitress/hostess was very accommodating. We had two pizzas, one vegetarian for my partner and I had the parmigiana which was so good. The pricing was great value. Would recommend!
Amy Wan★★★★★
Nice food, the bacon from carbonara is so crispy, and love the pizza and tiramisu too. 33 euros for 2 people, very decent price! The service is friendly.

The restaurant is in a good location. We tried pizza margharita ( average), carbonnara ( we didnt like it) and foccaccia eith burrata ( nice). The service was great! Be careful of mosquittos in August, bring mosquitto repeller

Wonderful casual Italian restaurant in Arles. The beef lasagna was delicious; we almost ordered a second even though we were so full. The side salad was very fresh. The bufala pizza was also divine, and the chef picked the basil fresh as he made it. If you’re craving a hearty, delicious meal in Arles, you can’t go wrong here.

Best pizza we've had in a long time. The base is super crispy and paper thin with generous amount of ingredients, fresh and tasty.
The lasagna aux aubergine is so yummy and definitely a taste of mama's home cooking.
Very friendly and generous. 😋

Excellent meal! The veal saltimboca was very flavorful. My companion had the bolognese that he said was better than mine! Also had a local Cote du Rhone wine that paired well. Quiet restaurant on a back road, but worth the detour.
Thibaut Balayet★★★★★
We were looking for a pizzeria for 2 adults and 4 kids. Not an easy task to start with!
We ended up finding Pizzeria La Mamma in the heart of Arles, very close to the amphitheater.
The staff that attended our table was extremely friendly and patient with the kids.
There was a kids menu which was perfect for the kids (pastas or pizza for main and ice cream or panna cotta for dessert).
The rest of the menu is extremely complete and will satisfy all tastes. The pizza we ordered were perfect is size and taste. For desert we ordered tiramisu and panna cotta and they were also very good.
The wine menu is not extremely extensive but fits different needs (white, rouge, rose and for all sizes).
Max Van den Eynde★★★★☆
Food was tasty, and the service was amazing. The server over there is one of nicest persons in the town. True Italian people that love what they do.
Mike Harron★★★★☆
I only stopped for a quick lunch with a couple of friends. The (authentic Italian) shouting emanating from the kitchen was good entertainment and resulted in excellent pizza. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to sample anything other than the pizza but I would definitely recommend a visit to this restaurant.

Food was fantastic. I read the negative review posted yesterday and believe it should be disregarded. Certain people are just negative. Allora is simply lovely. Warm vibe, simple but delicious Italian food. On a quiet side street in Arles. Friendly and welcoming, personable and genuine. Away from the noise. Real food for food lovers.
Mica Magsanoc★★★☆☆
The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and very attentive staff, despite them just being two people for our whole group of 16.
I was a bit disappointed with the food. The starters were good with a ravioli and a scallop & truffle carpaccio. But the mains fell short. The gnocchi was VERY rich to the point one to two forkfuls would get you full. The scallop & mushroom flavor lacked flavor. The only good one was the beef ravioli.
Paolo Venturini★★☆☆☆
The food is pretty good, fine quality but the service is poor. The bread we had was stale. A little bit of attention to the client needs would be appreciated. It’s very odd that a restaurant doesn’t have milk for the coffee. Wine list very limited in chose and price. We don’t recommend it.
Helly Cebeluski★☆☆☆☆
the food is terrible! first the fried zucchini flowers were really oily and tasted like nothing. then the pasta was overcooked and the sauce was just a sad watery pool. overpriced wine, the waiter was rude and literally asked why I said “bonsoir” if I didnt speak french. just a sad place preying on lost tourists — don’t be one of them!
Can Turgut★★★★★
It was an amazing experience for us to taste the white truffle manu at Allora. The tajarin pasta (30 eggs for 1 kg flour) and the Italian tartare (battuta di fassona) were extremely delicious. It is an authentic north Italian restaurant with Michelin star quality (i don’t know if they have it or not). The negative comments were mainly related to prices (which is normal considering the quality), long waiting time (also normal depending on the concept). So if you want to just grab a bite and leave this place doesn’t suit you. If you want to long degustative nice evening with your friends or family, i assure you that you would be happy with the quality, taste and atmosphere of this little restaurant.

Great pizza restaurant with good pizzas og good service. We asked for a table and quickly got one. Then we ordered the pizzas and about 15 - 20 minutes after we had gotten it.

A very good experience after visiting the museum. The roasted pumpkin with fromage blanc and its little seeds was excellent. Super efficient service. Delicious beer. Terrible restaurant, the only good thing was the pizza. We ate washed-out pasta and frozen fish. Unfortunately, it's not an Italian restaurant. The food is tasteless, and they put salad on everything.

Seemly cooked by them and then in a self service format. About 1/3 of the price of the other local cafes, albeit for a simpler format with smaller portion sizes.

A mistake was made with the pasta order without prior notification. The server or manager was unprofessional and even accused the customer of lying!
A simple apology would have been appreciated. That's what we were mainly expecting.
It's a real shame because the food itself is good.

My favourite pizza has always been Diavlo/American Hot, and this is the BEST one I've ever had (and I've even been to Napoli...)! We split one pizza (€14) and were both so full we couldn't finish it.
The restaurant terrace in the Forum square was charming.
The service was fantastic, even though they were working a large part of the Forum Square they were attentive, charming and never left us waiting.
I can imagine it might be different during high season but where is it not?
Great service, food and prices.
Ktpearie★★★★☆
Le Napo is more about the setting than the food. What I had was fairly mediocre, but the location on Place du Forum is hard to beat, right by the Nord-Pinus and Café Van Gogh in one of the liveliest parts of Arles. Worth it for a drink, a simple meal, and the atmosphere rather than for the kitchen itself.
Tom Spadoro★★★★★
We stopped for a pizza and a couple drinks. The ingredients were fresh and tasty 😋. Our server was attentive to our visit.

Tips for Choosing the Right Italian Restaurant in Arles
Selecting the right spot in a city rich with dining options requires a bit of strategy. While the list above provides a curated starting point, understanding the local dining culture will help you match the restaurant to your specific mood and schedule. Whether you are seeking a romantic date night or a quick family meal, these practical tips will ensure your Italian dining experience in Arles is exactly what you hoped for.
1. Book Ahead During Festival Season
Arles is a bustling hub during the summer months and particularly during the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival or the Feria. The most popular Italian spots fill up quickly with both tourists and locals. Calling a day in advance, or even a few hours before dinner, is essential to avoid disappointment, especially if you want to sit on an outdoor terrace.
2. Look for the Wood-Fired Oven
If pizza is your priority, authenticity often comes down to the oven. A true wood-fired oven reaches temperatures that gas or electric ovens simply cannot, creating the signature leopard-spotted, blistered crust. When scanning menus or walking by a restaurant, look for the phrase "au feu de bois" or simply peek inside to see the flames.
3. Trust the Local Wine List
While you might instinctively order a Chianti or Barolo, the Italian restaurants in Arles often curate excellent lists that blend Italian imports with local Rhône Valley wines. Ask your server for a local red from the Alpilles or a crisp rosé from the Camargue. These local wines often pair surprisingly well with tomato-based sauces and fresh seafood pastas.
4. Check the Lunch Formulas
Dining out in France can be expensive, but lunch is where you find the best value. Most quality restaurants in Arles offer a "Formule du Midi" (lunch set menu). This usually includes an entrée and main course, or main course and dessert, for a fixed price that is significantly cheaper than dining à la carte in the evening. It is the best way to experience high-quality Italian cooking on a budget.
5. Consider the Timing
French and Italian dining schedules in Arles tend to align. Kitchens usually close between 2:30 PM and 7:00 PM. If you want a late lunch or an early dinner, you may be limited to cafés or snack bars. To get the full experience of a proper trattoria, aim to sit down for lunch around 12:30 PM or for dinner after 7:30 PM.
6. Don’t Skip the Fresh Pasta Specials
Many Italian restaurants in Provence take advantage of the incredible local produce and seafood. While a classic carbonara is always a good test of a kitchen’s skill, pay attention to the daily specials. You will often find fresh tagliatelle with local shellfish or ravioli stuffed with Provençal herbs and cheese, offering a unique fusion of Italian technique and French ingredients.
Arles offers a dining experience that is rich in atmosphere and flavor, and the Italian options here are a testament to the city’s Mediterranean soul. Stepping into one of these restaurants provides a warm, comforting contrast to the often formal nature of traditional French bistros. It is a chance to slow down, share a plate of antipasti, and enjoy the convivial spirit that defines both Italian and Provençal cultures.
Whether you choose a pizza topped with local ingredients or a plate of perfectly al dente pasta, you are participating in a culinary tradition that values simplicity and quality. Use this guide to explore beyond the obvious and discover the Italian gems that make Arles such a satisfying place to eat.
