15 Best Cafes in Avignon

The search for the perfect café in Avignon often feels like a treasure hunt through centuries of history. This Provençal city, famous for its medieval ramparts and the grand Palais des Papes, offers a coffee culture that balances traditional French elegance with modern specialty trends. Whether you are seeking a quiet corner to read or a sunny terrace to people-watch, the city’s café scene is deeply tied to the rhythm of the cobblestone streets.

Navigating the sheer variety of options can be overwhelming, especially if you are visiting for a short break or trying to escape the tourist-heavy main squares. The best spots are not always the most obvious ones; they are often tucked away in quiet courtyards, hidden behind ancient stone facades, or frequented by local students and artists. Understanding the geography of the city helps, as the atmosphere shifts dramatically from the bustling Place de l’Horloge to the bohemian Rue des Teinturiers.

Avignon’s café culture is not just about the espresso—it is about the experience of slowing down. The city moves at a pace that encourages lingering, where the quality of the light hitting your table matters as much as the crema on your espresso. You will find that many establishments here double as cultural spaces, wine bars, or patisseries, blurring the lines between a quick coffee stop and a memorable meal.

In this guide, we have curated a selection of the best places to drink coffee in the city. We have considered not only the quality of the beans and the skill of the baristas but also the atmosphere, the location, and the value for money. From organic micro-roasters to historic institutions that have served locals for decades, this list aims to cover every type of coffee craving you might have while exploring the Vaucluse.

Our recommendations are based on extensive research into local favorites and consistent quality, ensuring you avoid the trap of paying high prices for mediocre coffee in high-traffic zones. We believe a great café should feel like a respite, offering a genuine taste of local life. Each location below offers something unique, whether it is a signature pastry, a stunning view, or simply the perfect temperature for a flat white.

Whether you are a digital nomad looking for reliable Wi-Fi or a traveler seeking a sugar rush alongside your caffeine, there is a seat waiting for you. Let us explore the top spots that define Avignon’s vibrant coffee landscape.

Good spot for vegan breakfast (on Mondays)! Coffeecina has really big cappuccinos as a signature drink and offers a variety of plant milks at no extra cost! ⭐❤️ There is one vegan burrito option and a vegan & glutenfree cookie made from oats and dates. Also the homemade ice teas served in glass bottles are delicious, refreshing & a nice sustainable option!

Just had the best coffee in Avignon! Super cozy charming kafe, very kind and friendly staff. Haven't try the food but it all looked yummy too! 🇲🇽☕️🌯🥐

This place is a gem. My son and I had special brunch with a menu « burritos », coffee and dessert. The owner of the place is warm and welcoming all of customers kindly and patiently. Foods are yummy and coffee is great. A cup of cappuccino with cinnamon is a must try. This coffee shop resonates well the owner’s identity. definitely, we will come back again next time, on trip to Avignon.
Adam Carlesco★★★★★
Excellent vegan burrito in a nation where Mexican food is rare and vegan options even rarer. Great prices too and an assortment of desserts and coffees. Nice decor and multilingual staff too. Highly recommended.
Jonathan★★★★★
I ordered a cappuccino, and the portion size was quite generous. The taste is pretty standard for the city — not better or worse than other cafés around. The space itself is nice, with the option to sit either inside or outside the café. One thing to keep in mind: the prices are slightly above average compared to other places nearby.

We had a lovely brunch experience at Tulipe Café Restaurant in Avignon. The atmosphere was calm, stylish, and welcoming, with the kind of cozy modern aesthetic that makes you want to stay a little longer over coffee and conversation. My girlfriend ordered the Tartine Salée while I went for the brunch plate, and both were excellent from start to finish. The brunch plate was especially well balanced and creative. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared, from the scrambled eggs and toasted country bread to the Corsican sheep’s cheese and the fig chutney with Penja pepper, which added a really nice sweet and slightly spiced touch. The salad and savory granola also brought great texture and variety to the plate. The biggest surprise for me, though, was the salted gorgonzola cookie with honey and walnuts. What a fun idea — slightly cheesy, lightly sweet, rich without being overwhelming, and genuinely memorable. It was one of those little details that makes a brunch stand out from the standard formula. The coffee overall was very good as well. My girlfriend’s americano initially came out a bit flavourless, but the staff handled it perfectly: they replaced it immediately with an espresso, which was excellent. That kind of attentive and friendly service always leaves a strong impression. A creative, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable brunch spot in Avignon that we’d happily return to.
Robert Kwok★★★★☆
Decided to visit this cafe when visiting Avignon (the only specialty cafe listed on European Coffee Trip for this town). Despite being in the heart of the tourist path, the quality of the coffee is not your usual dark roasted and quick turnover affair. Had a Americano and it was genuinely great.
Jade Csy★★★★★
Excellent food and service here. Highly recommend to anyone who’s visiting Avignon. I originally visited for their speciality coffee (v60) but their set menu for lunch looked too good to pass up. The best part was the friendly lady with glasses came to greet me and communicated that we could share which is not always the case everywhere in France for set menus. Oh and coffee was amazing as well☕️
u.g. Lodwig★★★★★
Very nice cafe on a beautiful side street with chic indoor decor and beautiful outdoor seating. They have really good espresso drinks for dine-in or take-away. The breakfast formula has gazpacho, yoghurt with muesli, scrambled eggs, salad, cheese and waffle with chocolate, and it comes with fresh juice and good coffee. It’s a very nice place for brunch or lunch. They have a small lunch menu.
Jamie Lee★★★★★
Nice outdoor and indoor seatings. Modern decoration. Nice shopping area as well. Food was very good. Felt healthy afterwards. I would definitely return if I’m back in Avignon.

Catalin Orzan★★★★★
The best coffee I've had in France to date! The taste, the presentation, all were fantastic. The shop is small, but well organized and has an external terrace as well. We went for two Lattes, one hot and one cold, one with coconut milk and the other with regular milk, both were exceptional. Sadly we only spent a day in Avignon and did not have the chance to try the other items on the menu, but I am sure theu are all amazing.
Max Ratliff★★★★★
Our favorite coffee spot in Avignon. We had a latte and macchiato with our chocolate chip croissant. Best croissant we have had in France thus far!! The barista was a kind gentlemen who made you feel welcome despite a slight language barrier. I implore you to go here for your morning coffee while visiting the city.
Pedro Pereira★★★★★
Very minimalistically decorated speciality coffee shops in the very centre of Avignon old town. We loved the vibe, the nice staff and the freshly brewed aromatic coffee
Elke Eyckmans★★★★☆
We needed a cool drink durning our walk in avignon and we stumbled on this small cafe. We opted for the black and purple latte as we both were really intrigued by the ingredients (and i love ube) They were refreshing and great in flavour balance. Can totally recommend this place. They also have matcha and normal coffees

I go there everyday because of the festival and it's truly the best place in Avignon! Perfect service, tasty coffee and other drinks. Barista also speaks English which is very rare. 10/10 totally recommend.

One of the best cafes I’ve ever visited! Wonderful atmosphere, tasty high quality food and drinks, and superb coffee too! On top of that the owners are the nicest people. Me and my partner went there every day during our stay in Avignon, and they were so patient and kind when we had trouble understanding the menu (our French is not very good). I could keep saying nice things about this place but the review would be too long. Please just go visit Yumi cafe ☕️
Elaine Moura★★★★★
I had the matcha lavanda and it was delicious! The lavanda blended well with the matcha, and the drink wasn’t bitter
Bethany Muncer★★★★★
I visited this place after seeing they did a lot of different matcha flavours. They have lots of milk alternative options too. I had a the coconut milk strawberry matcha and it was so good!! I came back the next morning and ordered an iced latte because this place is so good. The staff are super friendly and spoke great English and were really helpful. They have a great menu and lots of yummy food options. I’ll be sure to visit again in the future
Anish Shindore★★★★★
What a warm and friendly place to have some Great coffee and crepes.
Tenley Ong★★★★★
Wow. I’m so glad I picked this place to stop for lunch. I got the combo - a vegetarian sandwich, oat milk matcha (paid a little extra for it), and chocolate gelato. The sandwich was huge AND delicious. The service was amazing and the location is prime. Great for people watching but peaceful at the same time. 11/10 recommend. Also the apple in the pictures was mine that I brought - sorry!

The only missing thing at this place is the coach to melt yourself down into it eating those delicious pastries delivered right from heaven. I had the pleasure of trying white tea an it was top notch quality! The atmosphere of the restaurant is warm and inviting, with a cozy seating area and a friendly staff. The service was excellent, and my food was brought to me quickly. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious and authentic French pastry experience

Nice little place in a quiet street. The owner was very friendly and she made us a müsli with fresh berries, which was refreshing after all those French pastries. I think they mixed up our coffee orders but they changed them without question. Definitely recommended for a quick break.

The best iced coffee ever! Of course the whipped cream was just an added guilty pleasure for us. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. Sit outside or inside, very comfortable. Highly recommend 🇨🇦

Delicious cinnamon buns and decaf coffee. A pleasant and beautiful barista☺️☺️

Convenient in terms of location and food-ordering but mediocre food. They used microwave to re-heat the (too-sugary) waffle and it was tough. Apple pie was okay with quite a bit of apple. Coffee was tasteless! Not impressed at all!

A true hidden gem nestled near the heart of Avignon, perfect for a delightful breakfast or brunch. Though the space is small, it exudes a charming and inviting ambiance. Fabulous coffee shop in the heart of Avignon serving great coffee that actually taste like coffee. I ordered a coffee milkshake and got more than I bargained for with lashings of whipped cream and dark chocolate buttons. While wandering Avignon's historic streets, we found this restaurant and decided to stop for breakfast. The food was incredible! (Meat breakfast platter, and avocado toast) The portions were very generous, so definitely come hungry! This was our most reliably enjoyable restaurant while in Avignon. I loved their salmon toasty, soup, aperitifs, and many desserts, especially the caramel cake. The restaurant has a 1940s interior, two dining rooms of several tables each, and a few more tables on a tree shaded square across the street. The staff are warm and friendly. The hours are more accessable than most nearby restaurants. We ended up coming back here frequently for snacks between meals or for dessert after others.

How to Choose the Best Café for Your Mood

While the list above provides you with the highest quality coffee and atmosphere in Avignon, choosing the right one depends largely on what you want to get out of your visit. The city is compact, but the vibe can change drastically from one street to the next. Understanding a few local customs and logistics will help you blend in seamlessly and find the perfect spot for your specific needs, whether you are working remotely or recovering from a morning of sightseeing.

Check the terrace rules before you sit down. In many French cafés, the price of a coffee changes depending on whether you sit at the bar, inside, or on the terrace. A seat with a view of the Palais des Papes will almost always cost more than standing at the counter. If you are on a budget, do what the locals do and order your espresso "au comptoir" (at the counter) before moving on.

Understand the difference between a café and a salon de thé. While many places serve both, a traditional café focuses on coffee and alcoholic drinks, whereas a salon de thé (tea room) usually specializes in pastries and lighter lunches. If you are looking for a full meal with your coffee, prioritize places known for their "brunch" or "déjeuner" menus rather than just their bar service.

Do not expect fast service during peak hours. Avignon runs on a relaxed Mediterranean clock. If you visit a popular spot at 10:00 AM or 3:00 PM, expect the terrace to be packed and the service to be leisurely. This is not neglect; it is an invitation to slow down. If you are in a hurry, visit outside of standard meal times or grab a quick espresso at a standing bar.

Look for local roasters. The specialty coffee movement has arrived in Avignon, but it is not as widespread as in Paris or Lyon. If you care about the origin and roast of your beans, look for cafés that explicitly mention local roasters from the South of France. These spots usually take greater care with their milk steaming and espresso extraction.

Bring cash for smaller establishments. While most modern cafés accept credit cards, some of the older, family-run institutions or tiny kiosks still operate on a cash-only or minimum-spend basis. Carrying a few small bills will save you from an awkward moment when trying to pay for a single espresso.

As the sun begins to set over the Rhône, the café terraces of Avignon transform into the living rooms of the city. It is the moment when the heat of the day softens, and the clinking of glasses mixes with the low hum of conversation. Choosing the right spot to witness this golden hour is the key to unlocking the true magic of Provence.

Ultimately, the best café in Avignon is the one that makes you feel like you belong there, even if only for a short while. Whether you settle for a historic institution with velvet chairs or a minimalist bar with exposed stone walls, you are participating in a ritual that has been central to French life for centuries. Take your time, order something sweet, and let the city reveal itself to you one cup at a time.
