Avignon may be famous for its medieval ramparts, the Palais des Papes, and the legacy of the theatrical festival, but its culinary scene tells an equally compelling story. Beyond the traditional Provençal bistros serving daube and ratatouille, the city has quietly cultivated a dynamic and diverse international food culture.
In recent years, a wave of authentic Asian eateries has transformed the local dining landscape, offering everything from steaming bowls of Vietnamese pho to delicate Japanese sushi and fiery Szechuan stir-fries. These restaurants provide a welcome contrast to the heavier, meat-centric dishes often associated with the South of France.
For locals and visitors alike, the appeal lies not just in the flavor but in the freshness of the ingredients, as many chefs integrate local Provençal herbs and vegetables into traditional Asian recipes. Whether you are looking for a quick, casual lunch or a refined evening meal, the options are surprisingly varied.
Navigating this growing scene can be tricky, as quality varies significantly between tourist traps and genuine culinary gems. To help you make the right choice, we have compiled a list of the most reliable and delicious spots currently operating in the city.
This guide focuses on authenticity, consistency, and the overall dining experience, ensuring you find the perfect meal to satisfy your cravings. Without further delay, here are the best Asian restaurants Avignon has to offer.

It's been half a month since I came to France. With the mentality of wanting to change my taste, I found a Thai restaurant on Google. We arrived ten minutes before the opening of his restaurant and waited until it opened on time. Fortunately, we met our Chinese waiter, who enthusiastically introduced us to their cuisine and let us have the most delicious dinner. Meal, thank you very much! A great Thai restaurant, highly recommended! The price is also very affordable

I was impressed by the authentic and tasty Thai cuisine. The staff was very accommodating, accepting special dish requests and adjusting the spiciness to my preference. Highly recommended for a genuine Thai dining experience!

We only came for the astoundingly good recommendations…
Maybe people don’t know how real Thai food should smell and taste like?
We made a reservation some days before… expecting a nice table… but at least one of us with view to the toilet door which stood open several times…
Anyway… if the food would have been good…
But both ordered plates ( shouldn’t be damaged on the side…) didn’t convince…
Much too sweet (why?) overcooked (green!) peppers… sauce without typically complex taste and smell…
One single leaf of Thai basil…
The chicken meat tasted bit of been unfreezed …
The noodles and the curry as well lacked of flavors of lemongrass/leafs , fish sauce and there were no more fresh spices around…
Far away from what it should be like in our point of view…
We left quite disappointed and (sorry for that)
can not recommend this place…

Excellent food and excellent service! The staff were so friendly, patient, and attentive. We don’t speak French, so we used a translator to communicate, and they kindly took the time to explain everything to us. Their hospitality made us feel truly welcome.
The food was delicious and authentic, and it gave us a wonderful feeling of being back home. Thank you for such a lovely experience. Highly recommended! ❤️

Excellent Asian food in Avignon with the sweetest staff!
Came here yesterday and it was so good! Ordered the Pho and rice paper rolls, both were delicious. The Pho had beef balls, rare beef, and tendon—tasted super authentic.
Beyond the food, the hospitality was unmatched. We called right before they closed to ask if we could still do takeout, and the daughter explained the menu in good English and the owner gave us great recommendations.
Since one of the nearby streets looked a bit sketchy at night, the owner offered to actually walk my mom and me to our car with a French employee and even showed us how to pay for parking. I tried to tip them but they refused🙏.
Honestly such nice people and great comfort food. Definitely recommend checking them out if you're in Avignon!

I had a surprisingly delicious salad, with rice noodles, vegetarian egg roll chunks, and perfect seasoning, while my husband enjoyed a spicy vegetarian tofu dish. The restaurant is on a pedestrian street with lovely tiles for paving, and it's a pleasure to sit there. Very nice people, too.

The owner of this restaurant is very cool!!! There's a Corgi outside waiting for visitors, her name is Tiffany. The food was great though the bubble teas could be better.

We ate here as a dinner stop on a roadtrip, and it far exceeded my expectations. The service was great and the food was even better. The digital menu made ordering very easy and efficient, and the food was served pretty fast as well. It was an overall great experience, and I will definitely make sure to come back if I pass by again.

we had a great experience. owner was super nice and made us feel very welcome.

This place has some of the best food I had in France. After having so much French food, I wanted a change and had some Taiwanese food. The environment was amazing- the owner spoke great Chinese and so did other diners. It was fun chatting in Chinese. Food came out quick. We ordered bamboo, fried chicken, and shrimp tempura as starters.
Bamboo: Flavorful with good texture, perfect way to start the meal
Fried chicken: Crispy, flavorful, and juicy. It was really well made
Shrimp Tempura: The shrimp was lightly breaded and fried, the inside was juicy with an amazingly light crisp outside.
For our main dishes, we got noodles with yakitori and 2 rice dishes with different meats.
Noodles with yakitori: The noodles were extremely flavorful with some vegetables to make it fresher. The yakitori was juicy and smoky, with a sweet glaze. Perfect pair
Rice with protein: The rice had many protein options, we got beef and chicken. The chicken had a teriyaki sauce, and the beef came with another sauce that paired with it well. Along with the fried egg and veggies, it was the perfect dish.
For drinks, we got a taro bubble tea with tapioca bubbles. We got it with half sugar. It wasn’t too sweet and the tapioca bubbles were nice and chewy and absorbed the tea well, it was perfect for my taste.
This place is a must try - especially if you’re Chinese or Taiwanese

Kawaii new Japanese restaurant in the heart of the old city. We had a nice light lunch - zaru soba and unagi don. Beautifully presented and good flavours - though the soba dashi was not the best. Disclaimer: we met in Japan, lived there 10 years, and had our first child there. So our standards are high!

I highly recommend this restaurant, a truly authentic Japanese restaurant (walking into this izakaya felt like stepping back into Japan – the decor is fantastic – and they even offer hot towels for your hands before your meal, just like in Japan). The food is very well prepared (and, most importantly, it's authentic Japanese cuisine), and you can tell it's all homemade. The atmosphere is very friendly, and the waitress and chef are very welcoming. We didn't have to wait long between courses, and the prices are reasonable.

We had a great dinner here with our two kids! We ordered the mapo tofu, the hotplate beef, the eggplant and the canton fried rice. All the dishes were authentic and excellent! Especially the hotplate beef! Beef was super tender and generous portions and the sauce was really good with rice. Service was very attentive and friendly. Definitely recommended for Asians who miss authentic Chinese food and also anyone who wants to have an authentic Chinese meal!

Incredibily small and unassuming place run by a single person in a fairly unknown part of the town. BUT please visit it if you find yourself wanting some actually REALLY good asian food made by someone who's not just really kind but who really cares for the food they make ! You might not always find a wide variety unless you call him beforehand, but it's not really important as it's just the singles best place in all of Avignon if you want incredible food for a really good price !
Also, even if you don't speak much french he always tries to make himself understood with a little bit of english, and does so while still being kind, so feel free to just pass by and try it out !
And to the owner: thank you for all the incredible food ! Every time I had a full day because of work, just passing by your shop made my whole day better !

Passing through Avignon, we were looking for a nice little restaurant. We relied on previous reviews, and the place lived up to its ratings. While primarily offering takeout, we still ended up eating in thanks to the few tables available and set. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and the service was very pleasant and excellent. The dessert selection was a bit limited, but it didn't detract from the overall experience.
CINQ VLIEGHER★★★★★
Friendly welcome and very good food, but not very generous portions, and no peanuts or lemon in the Pad Thai – you have to ask for them.

Wonderful food! Having been to Korea many times it was a great surprise to find authentic Korean food in France. The chef (owner’s wife?) is Korean which explained the quality of the food. Our only issue was the fact that our previous experience is that kimchi is an integral part of Korean service. After discussion as to why it was charged as a ‘side’ the chef kindly provided a complimentary serving! Greatly appreciated. The quality of the house red wine was excellent.
Highly recommend this restaurant!

My family and I tried the Pajun and Bibimbap and the food, service and ambiance did not disappoint. This place has that local restaurant appeal that makes you want to return. How to Choose the Right Asian Restaurant in Avignon
With so many options available, selecting the perfect spot can depend on your mood, dietary requirements, and location. While the list above highlights the best of the best, understanding what makes a restaurant stand out in this specific region will help you order like a local and enjoy your meal to the fullest. Here are a few essential tips to keep in mind when exploring Asian cuisine in Avignon.
1. Look for the "Fait Maison" Label
In France, the "fait maison" (homemade) designation is a legal guarantee that dishes are prepared from raw ingredients on the premises. Many of the top Asian restaurants in Avignon pride themselves on this, avoiding pre-packaged spring rolls or instant sauces. Check the menu or the window for this label to ensure you are getting the highest quality.
2. Don’t Skip the Lunch Menus (Formules)
Dining out in France can be expensive, but lunchtime is your best friend. Most Asian restaurants in Avignon offer a "formule midi" or set lunch menu, which typically includes a starter, main course, and sometimes a drink or dessert for a very reasonable price. This is an excellent way to sample high-end restaurants at a fraction of the dinner cost.
3. Reserve Ahead During the Festival Season
If you are visiting during the Festival d’Avignon in July, the city’s population explodes, and restaurants fill up rapidly. Many of the best Asian spots are small, intimate venues with limited seating. It is highly recommended to call ahead or book a table online, especially for dinner service, to avoid long waits or disappointment.
4. Ask About the Spice Level
French palates have historically been more sensitive to heat than those in the UK or the US, so some restaurants may tone down the chili in dishes like Thai curries or Szechuan beef. If you enjoy spicy food, don’t be shy—ask the server for "piment" or request that the chef make it "très épicé" (very spicy) to get the authentic kick you desire.
5. Explore the Fusion of Provençal and Asian Flavors
Avignon sits in the heart of one of the most fertile agricultural regions in Europe. The best chefs in the city capitalize on this by incorporating local goat cheese, Herbes de Provence, and seasonal vegetables into their Asian dishes. Be adventurous and try a specialty that blends these two worlds; it is often where the magic happens.
Finding a great meal in Avignon is rarely difficult, but finding an exceptional Asian meal requires a bit of local knowledge. By venturing beyond the main tourist squares and into the side streets where these restaurants reside, you open yourself up to a world of vibrant flavors that respect both Asian culinary traditions and the bounty of Provence.
Whether you are in the mood for a comforting bowl of noodles on a chilly Mistral day or fresh sashimi on a hot summer afternoon, the restaurants listed above provide the quality and atmosphere needed for a memorable dining experience. Bon appétit!
