Dining out in Nantes doesn’t have to drain your wallet to be memorable. The city, known for its vibrant cultural scene and creative energy, boasts a culinary landscape that is surprisingly accessible. From traditional Breton crêperies to bustling neo-bistros, the local food scene thrives on quality ingredients and generous portions.
Finding a satisfying meal for under €20 is entirely possible if you know where to look. Many chefs in Nantes have embraced the "bistronomie" movement, offering refined cooking at casual prices. This shift means you can sample dishes that taste gourmet without the white tablecloth markup.
The key to eating well on a budget here is to step away from the heavily touristy zones, such as the immediate vicinity of the Château des Ducs. Instead, venture into the Bouffay district’s side streets or the up-and-coming Île de Nantes. These areas are packed with independent owners who prioritize value.
We have scoured the city to find spots that deliver exceptional flavor for the price. This list focuses on restaurants where the atmosphere is welcoming, the ingredients are fresh, and the bill won’t surprise you. Whether you are a student, a traveler, or a local looking for a cheap eat, there is something here for you.
These establishments prove that "affordable" does not mean "boring." They serve everything from the freshest seafood to hearty vegan bowls and wood-fired pizzas. You can enjoy a true taste of Nantes without compromising on the experience.
Below is our curated selection of the best value-driven dining options in the city right now.

The staff is kind and helpful. The food is really nice!We had hot tartines (something like bruschettes) with 3 cheese and croque monsieur. I suggest you to order also the banoffee at the end. It is excellent! Happy hour happens from Monday to Friday afternoon! Nice choice for a beer!!

Excellent food at competitive prices. I really enjoyed the "Tartine burger tradition" and a glass of wine was less than 3€. The dauphinois potatoes were amazing! I would definitely come again

We decided to give it a try based on good reviews and photos. It was raining cats and dogs so we were very happy to get a table inside especially as there is a great atmosphere inside. It's a bit like eating in a museum.
We ordered a regular size Croque Monsieur each and an Anchovie Salad to share. Both were very tasty. We also shared a Rhubarb crumble which again was first rate.
We had a 35c of draft Merlot, which added to the overall enjoyment.

It’s a relaxed restaurant with friendly staff and good food. We ordered many plates to share and all of them were tasty. Great value for money!

Interesting place on a busy square. It was too cold to eat outside so I sat inside. I had a basic tartine (ham and cheese) with a surprisingly large salad and my meal was very good. Would recommend for a light meal.

The food is alright. The waiter doesn’t speak English and the menu is only in French. So I ordered a menu etudiant it is 12.5 euro( I saw the comment from other restaurants that they have lunch menu offering a drink, savory and sweet crepe for a good price) but the waiter did not confirm with me that is only for students and I need to present a student ID( or should I be flattered that I look like a student?). I only knew it when I paid, he charged me 17.2 euro by adding up every thing one by one . Just order one item or the restaurant should work on a English menu! Should have gone to other crepe restaurant….

The food was great and glutenfree gallete with buckwheat was very tasty! There might be cross contamination so do ask them to check on that. The waiter was a little but slow on the service considering the restaurant was nearly empty at the time in the afternoon.

Looking for a restaurant still open at 2 pm, we went to Le Clin d'œil on the recommendation of my friend. The value for money is unbeatable. The dishes are delicious, well-prepared, healthy, and made with fresh ingredients. On top of that, the welcome is warm and the owners are lovely. I will definitely go back next time I'm in Nantes.
Capucine Vivant★★★★★
A workers' cafeteria-style restaurant, like a school cafeteria.
You go in and take a tray with cutlery, a glass, and a napkin, your starter and/or dessert from the fresh display case, then you go to the counter to order your main course and pay for your meal deal. There's limited seating. It's very busy and there's little stock. Everything is usually sold out by 1:00 or 1:30 PM.
The staff is very friendly, the atmosphere is simple and welcoming, and the food is good, offering a fresh take on classic dishes with just the right twist to surprise you without making you feel out of place.
Arnaud Wéry★★★★★
What a treat!
I came here on the recommendation of an acquaintance and enjoyed it so much that I went back two days later.
I really loved the food.
Don't be put off by a menu that might seem short compared to what you find elsewhere: the hardest part is choosing! 😉 They always have vegetarian options.
It was delicious both times.
The service is also very friendly, with staff who take the time to explain everything with a smile. I also loved the ambiance.
In short, just writing this review makes me want to go back! 😄
One last thing: it's ideally located near the train station, convenient when you arrive or are waiting for your train home.
Sonia Lechene★☆☆☆☆
I came to eat lunch at this restaurant.
I'm allergic to sesame. I ordered the vegetarian dish, clearly stating my allergy and asking if it contained sesame. I was told no!
I started having a severe allergic reaction and only ate a third of my meal. I went straight to the office to get an epinephrine injection and took antihistamines and corticosteroids.
No allergen list for you!!!
Seriously!!!
I can't accept that people's health is being played with!
It's unacceptable!

I ordered the steak and the lamb shank; the steak was beautiful, no complaints there. And I was very surprised at the portion of the lamb shank, the amount of meat on it I believe would be cheaper per gram than buying a raw steak at a grocery store in Nantes. The service was great, incredibly fast. I was dining alone this day and my waiters made sure to converse with me about the food as they passed.
Only bad thing was that I was sitting outside and twice was approached by homeless begging for food.

When you are traveling recommendations are very important when they are deserving, and Chez Franklin deserves all the praise. From the warm welcome, the great (Motown) music, and the very interesting menu, all high points. We were so lucky to have a chance to eat here, we would be regulars if we lived nearby!
Teresa Simpson★★★★☆
Nice place with friendly service. We enjoyed the food but it took a bit too long to arrive. Found ourselves rationing the wine so we'd have enough to drink with the main course.
Zena Braithwaite★★★★★
Thankyou to Chez Franklin for responding to my previous review which I have since deleted. This made me realise I had confused Chez Franklin with a restaurant we had attempted to eat at on the lunchtime - my apologies.
So yes we did eat here, it had been on my list of restaurants I had researched before our holiday with fish and vegetarian options.
Good menu, I had seabass ( the sauce in the little dish was stunning -see photo). From the photo I think my OH had mushroom risotto. We shared profiteroles for desert- excellent.

Firstly the attentive service is great! Super lovely! The food is incredible the xiao long bao is great! Soupy, fantastic. Chicken was well seasoned, NOT spicy which is a bummer (for me) but delicious. The rice balls were also great the meat inside super tender. The small rice bowls on offer is a cute touch and was very good. All details are there. Overall fantastic experience ! Excited to be back!

This restaurant we highly recommend! The food was excellent but the atmosphere is great. The entire place is filled with a combination of vintage, Lego, and funky objects everywhere!! The funniest is the bathrooms that are entered through a mirrored closet. The waiters were very nice and energetic! Lots of fun and good food!

Worth the queue before the restaurant opened. Extensive menu and numerous specials. My Brochette de Boeuf was very good. If you can get a seat outside it is a great place to see Les Nantaise and les touristes enjoying the evening. Great team of waiters - very helpful

A very special place as it's also a flea market. The dishes are classical French dishes very well prepared. Selection of wine is good and service was fast and very polite. It was very hot inside but not much can be done when it's a heat wave outside.

Tourist trap. This was the place one person in our group booked last minute on the single day we did not have a dinner reservation. Makes sense why they have tables. It’s so bad. The razor clams were the highlight (of how terrible the food can get). Just don’t go here. Worst food I had in France.
Phil Cook★★★★★
Had ear marked Chez Maman before visiting Nantes and it did not disappoint. An incredibly generous dish of beef bourguignon was ideal for this Sunday lunch: big chunks of beek cheeky (I think) were so moreish with plenty of sauce, little baby onions, carrots and a huge service of fries. My partner enjoyed an equally homely chicken main course. The cider we had was so delicious. I couldn't not order a classic creme brulee and it was just perfect. Sarah enjoyed a super rich chocolate fondant that was warm and so unctuous. Great little restaurant to watch the world go by with food at an appealing price point and very laid back, friendly service. One of our best meals in Nantes - highly recommend

Nice and pretty brunch place in the heart of Nantes. The budget is very reasonable for the size of the dishes that you get. The food is good and they have a nice selection of tea. I highly recommend you to reserve in advance.
Lalla Boudmagh★★★☆☆
Was disappointed by the place. The food was very average. It says gravelax when it’s actually just a little piece of smoked salmon. No pepper in the egg dish. The ice tea was super small even though served in a fancy glass. And “the side” was really just a tiny side. Nothing I haven’t seen or tasted before. The service was just ok. The place looks good though. But that’s it.

This place is disgusting. We ordered a Hugo spritz (very flat and the guy got annoyed when we asked for it to be made again) and carbonara pasta, the pasta was over cooked , too mushy and they said Italian pancetta but it was just pig fat. Won’t even talk abiut the caccio and peppe. They probably changed the cook because last year it was amazing. I would definitely never come back here. Very disappointed.

recently visited a pizzeria and was thoroughly impressed with the experience. The pizza was incredibly delicious, made with fresh seafood that tasted absolutely divine. The pasta was also cooked to perfection, offering a wonderful blend of flavors. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The pizzaiolo even added Parmesan to our pizza free of charge, which was a delightful touch. The desserts were delectable and, combined with coffee, only cost €9. Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience, and I would highly recommend this pizzeria to anyone

This place is a must visit! I love Bouillon chain! Good price, big amount and so tasty!
We had
- Oeuf mayonnaise which was so good, the eggs was perfectly cooked, not too hard for both egg white and egg york! And the mayonnaise was fantastic! Creamy and a bit salty, I will definitely order it over and over again
- Tartare de saumon was so refreshing, sour and perfect size! Perfect for summer! And the salad was very good as well (a bit vinegary taste)
- Bavette de bœuf grillée, sauce du Bouillon was absolutely 💯 the steak was well cooked and the frites was a good pair! And very big piece of steak!
For dessert we had
- Coupe de glace vanille et framboises, the vanilla ice cream was sooo good, but the cream on top was even better!!
- lle flottante aux pralines roses was so cloudy and foamy, perfect taste!
The location is very easy to find, right in the city center of Nantes!

A traditional dining spot where the grilled chicken accompanied by white sauce and fries is a satisfying choice. I’m not sure if this has happened to anybody else. The team served frozen, ice cold, bottled red wine. We asked them why they did this and 3 of them justified it saying “you have to drink Pinot Noir cold”. Never in my life, and never again. I also proceeded to vomit after visiting this restaurant. Most likely the acidity from frozen pinot noir. Why we continued to drink it after being gaslit will haunt me forever. Anyway the staff need training, and we hoped for more from this lovely place. Nice atmosphere though.

Very nice and friendly service. It was a little on the slower side, but we didn’t mind at all since we weren’t in a hurry. The food was really good - a bit heavy afterwards, but that’s simply the nature of this type of cuisine. Prices were reasonable. Definitely recommended!
One thing I really appreciated was that the menu includes photos of the dishes, which is very helpful if you’re not exactly sure what to expect.
It’s just a shame we didn’t have room for dessert because they looked amazing.

The kitchen was closed when we got there, so only the apero planche was available. Professional and friendly service. The planche had a good selection of tasty items. I would go again.

How to Eat Well on a Budget in Nantes
Navigating a new city’s food scene can be tricky, but with a little local knowledge, you can eat like royalty on a backpacker’s budget. The following tips are designed to help you maximize flavor while minimizing cost, ensuring you get the most authentic experience possible without overspending.
Look for the "Formule" at Lunch
The absolute best way to eat affordably in France is to take advantage of the lunch special, known as the formule du midi. Most restaurants offer a two-course (starter/main or main/dessert) or three-course set menu for a fraction of the evening price. You can often dine at high-end bistros for under €20 if you go at noon.
Embrace the Galette
Nantes is the historical capital of Brittany, so the local specialty is the galette—a savory buckwheat crêpe. These are naturally gluten-free, incredibly filling, and usually very cheap. A classic ham, cheese, and egg galette paired with a bowl of local cider is one of the most cost-effective and culturally authentic meals you can find.
Check the Blackboards
Skip the laminated, multi-language menus; they are usually a sign of a tourist trap. Instead, look for restaurants with chalkboards outside. A small, handwritten menu usually indicates that the chef is cooking based on what was fresh at the market that morning, which often translates to better value and quality.
Venture to the Île de Nantes
While the historic center is charming, rents are higher there, which can drive up menu prices. Cross the river to the Île de Nantes. This former industrial district is now a hub for young chefs and creative food entrepreneurs who offer incredible, modern food at lower price points than their city-center counterparts.
Tap Water is Free (and Safe)
In France, you have the right to ask for a carafe d’eau (a jug of tap water). You do not need to order bottled water, which can add several euros to your bill. Simply ask your server for "une carafe d’eau, s’il vous plaît," and they will bring it to you free of charge.
Exploring the affordable food scene in Nantes is a journey through the city’s soul. It is about sitting in a bustling crêperie, hearing the sizzle of the griddle, or discovering a hidden courtyard bistro that feels like a local secret. These moments define the Nantes experience far more than any expensive tasting menu could.
By focusing on lunch specials and local specialties, you can stretch your travel budget significantly. The restaurants listed above represent the best of what this dynamic city has to offer, proving that you don’t need a Michelin star budget to enjoy a five-star meal. Bon appétit.
